Alicia Keys To Sing National Anthem At Super Bowl

Alicia Keys is scheduled to perform the national anthem at Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans on Feb. 3, according to the Associated Press.

An anonymous source close to the event’s entertainment planning confirmed the performance on Friday, although the NFL has yet to make the official announcement.

The addition of Keys only builds the anticipation surrounding the big game. In October, the league announced that Beyonce would take the stage during the halftime show and it is reported she will be joined by fellow Destiny’s Child members, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams.

Of course, none of this is to be overshadowed by the football. This year’s Super Bowl teams will be determined on Sunday, when the 49s play the Falcons, and the Ravens go head-to-head with the Patriots.

Family of Murdered LA Boy Begs TMZ to Pull Graphic Video of Shooting

“A man was shot dead outside a Hollywood nightclub early Sunday morning in the throes of a massive brawl… and our photog captured it all.”

That’s how TMZ describes its graphic footage of 19-year-old Andre Lowe being shot and killed just four days ago. Andre’s family, meanwhile, is devastated – and having video of Andre’s murder online, replete with nearly 1,000 comments (many of which are pretty vicious) from TMZ users, makes grieving in peace practically impossible.

After four days of desperately trying to get TMZ to take down the footage, Jason Andrews, one of Andre’s uncles, launched a Change.org petition asking TMZ to remove the video and apologize to his family.

Veteran femcee MC Lyte will be honored for her incredible accomplishments throughout the hip-hop world at Russell Simmons‘ 2013 Hip-Hop Inaugural Ball.

The 42-year-old multi-talent will be highlighted as a trailblazing lyricist and noted for her unselfish work in giving back to the industry.

“It has been my desire to expand the influence of female emcees and now that time has arrived,” MC Lyte said in a statement. “My company, Sunni Gyrl, has been in existence for over fifteen years and together with my charity, Hip Hop Sisters Foundation, I am committed to giving back and to aggressively expanding opportunities for female emcees and for other artist who wish to leverage my diversity, success, and leadership in the entertainment industry.”

This year’s ball will also celebrate the achievements of Swizz Beatz, John Legend, 2 Chainz, Dr. Benjamin Chavis, Doug E. Fresh and more.

Special guests will include Brandy, Lance Gross, Raheem Devaughn, Rosario Dawson, Kevin Liles, Eva Longoria and others, as La La Anthony and Terrence J serve as hosts.

The black-tie event is set to take place at the Harman Center for the Arts in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 20.

Production Stopped On “Django Unchained” Slave Dolls

Django Unchained” producers finally put an end to creating slave action-figures based on the controversial, Oscar-nominated film.

According to Reuters, “The eight-inch (20 cm) dolls, which were intended for people 17 and older, included gun-slinging freed slave Django, his wife and cruel, white plantation owner Candie.”

“Django Unchained” was hit with harsh criticism from Hollywood heavy-weights and moviegoers, alike, for graphically portraying and making light of the institution of slavery. Yet, the film still managed to pull five Oscar nods, including Best Picture.

As for the dolls, Reverend Al Sharpton’s National Action Network is among groups speaking out against their production and distribution.

K.W. Tullos, president of the National Action Network’s L.A. branch, told the New York Daily News:

“Selling this doll is highly offensive to our ancestors and the African-American community. The movie is for adults, but these are action figures that appeal to children. We don’t want other individuals to utilize them for entertainment, to make a mockery of slavery.”

In light of the upheaval, the Weinstein Company–producers of “Django Unchained”–released a statement on Friday saying they have stopped production on the dolls. Although, they did note, similar action-figures have been produced for many of Quentin Tarantino’s past films.

Sellers of the dolls, the National Entertainment Collectibles Association, did not comment.

Robert F. Chew “Prop Joe” Of HBO’s “The Wire” Dead At 52

Robert F. Chew Dead At 52

Robert F. Chew, best-known as “Prop Joe” (Proposition Joe), from the HBO cult-hit series “The Wire” has died. He was 52.

On Thursday, his sister Clarice Chew confirmed with the Baltimore Sun that her brother was found dead in his apartment after suffering a heart attack. According to the Baltimore coroner’s office, “morbid obesity” was a contributing factor.

A Baltimore native, Chew worked as music director for the Arena Players community theater. He also studied music at Morgan State University for two years.

Although short, his acting resume is marked with memorable roles, the most notable being Prop Joe–an intelligent, unassuming and, sometimes, ruthless Baltimore drug lord.

Chew also starred in TV shows “The Corner” and “Homicide: Life On The Street,” as well as the film “Something The Lord Made.”

Fellow cast member, Jaime Hector, who played Marlo in “The Wire” tweeted on Friday:

“I didn’t want to believe this #RIP Robert F. Chew, Prop Joe will always be remembered Robert Chew will always be loved and missed.”

Bullets Transform Into Bling

Bullets are being transformed into bling in Newark, New Jersey–a city outspoken about its gun violence problem.

Mayor Cory Booker has partnered with Jewelry For A Cause and the city police chief to design the “Caliber Collection.” JewelryForACause.net–a Connecticut-based jewelry maker–explains on its website:

“The Caliber Collection is a series of pieces that embody the gun’s transformation from a destructive weapon to a powerful symbol of renewal.”

According to Reuters, “Guns and shell casings seized by the Newark Police are being melted down and made into bracelets by [the] jewelry company. A portion of proceeds from each sale goes to fund gun buy-back amnesty programs in New Jersey’s largest city.”

The collection delivers steel bangles and cuffs, engraved with the serial number of the illegal gun used to create it. Brass pieces are fashioned from casings taken from crime scenes in the city. The line, designed by Jessica Mindich, has raised over $20,000 since its debut on November 28, Booker said:

“[The jewelry and buy-back program] are not a cure-all, but everybody has the power to do something little, something small to make a difference.”

Interest in the jewelry line has increased since the school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut took place and debate over U.S. gun control laws resurfaced.

Cuffs and bracelets are available with or without diamonds and range in price from $150 for the steel cuff to $375 for the brass bangle with diamonds.

Obama Takes Oath In Private Ceremony Sunday

President Barack Obama is set to be officially sworn in Sunday for his second term as president of the United States, ahead of Monday’s public events.

In a small and short ceremony at the White House, he will recite the constitutionally mandated oath for the third of four expected times during his time in office.

When Obama first took the oath on Jan. 20 four years ago, he and Chief Justice John Roberts tripped up over the wording, raising concerns about whether the constitutional requirements were fulfilled to the letter of the law.  Roberts went to the White House the next day and administered it again in full.

This time, Obama will recite it twice on purpose. Sunday’s official swearing-in, conducted again by Roberts, will be the 57th inauguration of a president in American history.

Beyond MLK: Expanding Our Civil Rights Consciousness

A historic date has arrived. Hundreds of thousands of men and women, all ages, ethnic identities, and socioeconomic statuses are descending on the National Mall to commemorate the life and work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as, the ceremonial second inauguration of President Barack Obama. African descendants from the Americas to Brazil are rejoicing in the proverbial realization of Dr. King’s dream. The first African-American president and first commander-in-chief to secure 50 percent of the popular vote twice since President Franklin Roosevelt will be sworn into the highest office of the land.

This occasion marks the beginning of the countdown to “Black History Month,” better known as 28 days of McDonald’s commercials lamenting the importance of celebrating black history 365 days (though the commercials only air in February) and students learning inaccurate information about slavery, Dr. King’s vision, and the biographies of other pioneers who assisted in bringing the Civil Rights Act of 1968 to fruition. D.C. natives and visitors will traipse to the MLK Memorial to offer their gratitude after Pres. Obama recites the Oath of Office with his hand firmly placed on the slain reverend’s Bible. But even as we bask in the importance of the moment and dredge up those painful images of Rosa Parks being led off the bus and Medgar Evers losing his life with his children and wife bearing witness, it is also essential for African-Americans to see beyond the dominant discourse of the Civil Rights Movement.

In order to grasp the spirit of what was occurring in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and dozens of other states, we must expand our consciousness to both learn the stories and embrace the leaders who have been relegated to the reference pages of history books. Davis W. Houck’s In Rhetoric, Religion and the Civil Rights Movement, 1954-1965 is a compilation of 130 speeches that illustrate the role of religion in the development of the movement. But within his work, Houck also captures a collection of voices that have been disregarded.

“The problem with much of the civil rights scholarship is that it’s basically a ‘greatest hits’ album featuring the fairly famous civil rights leaders,” Houck told FSU News.

In the book’s introduction, Houck and his editor, David E. Dixon, write, “Dr. [Martin Luther] King got the headlines, the awards and the adulation, but the Ed Kings did the daily dirty work so essential to the movement’s many successes.” This sentence refers to Ed King, who ran for lieutenant governor of Mississippi in 1964 on the Freedom Ticket, and almost died in his pursuit of justice. A local segregationist ran a car he was riding in off the road.

In venerating the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement, it is imperative to remember fighters like Lawrence Guyot (above), who spent his entire life in the trenches, even surviving intense jailhouse beatings during the 1960s. We must honor Fannie Lou Hamer (left), an activist who found her passion for the movement when she attempted to register to vote in Indianola, Mississippi. Though Hamer achieved mass acclaim later in her work, most of her earlier speeches have been lost. Houck transcribed one delivered in 1964 and included it in his book.

But what about Dave Dennis and Mildred Bell Johnson? Do their names resonate within us? Dennis was one of the original freedom fighters and was instrumental in the organization of the 1964 Freedom Summer. Johnson was responsible for the first Girl Scout troop for black girls in Alabama. She also happens to be General Colin Powell’s mother-in-law. Bayard Rustin (left), Dr. King’s advisor, led the organization of the March on Washington. He also championed intersectionality in the movement by not closeting his homosexuality. Ella Baker (below) helped form the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) after serving as the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) director. Vivian Malone-Jones enrolled in the University of Alabama in 1963, defying segregationist Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace and continued her activism in the civil rights division of the U.S. Justice Department.

UPTOWN_ella_bakerThese and hundreds of others are legacies that we must remember and cherish because their tireless efforts were consequential in the development of such a powerful social revolution. Their work and sacrifices were the adrenaline pumping through Dr. King’s veins. In our honoring of Dr. King and Pres. Obama on this day, we also offer gratitude and thanks to those names and lives that don’t have statues on the National Mall. It is the first step in expanding our consciousness.

Vice President Biden, Mr. Chief Justice, Members of the United States Congress, distinguished guests, and fellow citizens:

Each time we gather to inaugurate a president, we bear witness to the enduring strength of our Constitution. We affirm the promise of our democracy. We recall that what binds this nation together is not the colors of our skin or the tenets of our faith or the origins of our names. What makes us exceptional – what makes us American – is our allegiance to an idea, articulated in a declaration made more than two centuries ago:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Today we continue a never-ending journey, to bridge the meaning of those words with the realities of our time. For history tells us that while these truths may be self-evident, they have never been self-executing; that while freedom is a gift from God, it must be secured by His people here on Earth. The patriots of 1776 did not fight to replace the tyranny of a king with the privileges of a few or the rule of a mob. They gave to us a Republic, a government of, and by, and for the people, entrusting each generation to keep safe our founding creed.

For more than two hundred years, we have.

Through blood drawn by lash and blood drawn by sword, we learned that no union founded on the principles of liberty and equality could survive half-slave and half-free. We made ourselves anew, and vowed to move forward together.

Together, we determined that a modern economy requires railroads and highways to speed travel and commerce; schools and colleges to train our workers.

Together, we discovered that a free market only thrives when there are rules to ensure competition and fair play.

Together, we resolved that a great nation must care for the vulnerable, and protect its people from life’s worst hazards and misfortune.

Through it all, we have never relinquished our skepticism of central authority, nor have we succumbed to the fiction that all society’s ills can be cured through government alone. Our celebration of initiative and enterprise; our insistence on hard work and personal responsibility, are constants in our character.

But we have always understood that when times change, so must we; that fidelity to our founding principles requires new responses to new challenges; that preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action. For the American people can no more meet the demands of today’s world by acting alone than American soldiers could have met the forces of fascism or communism with muskets and militias. No single person can train all the math and science teachers we’ll need to equip our children for the future, or build the roads and networks and research labs that will bring new jobs and businesses to our shores. Now, more than ever, we must do these things together, as one nation, and one people.

This generation of Americans has been tested by crises that steeled our resolve and proved our resilience. A decade of war is now ending. An economic recovery has begun. America’s possibilities are limitless, for we possess all the qualities that this world without boundaries demands: youth and drive; diversity and openness; an endless capacity for risk and a gift for reinvention. My fellow Americans, we are made for this moment, and we will seize it – so long as we seize it together.

For we, the people, understand that our country cannot succeed when a shrinking few do very well and a growing many barely make it. We believe that America’s prosperity must rest upon the broad shoulders of a rising middle class. We know that America thrives when every person can find independence and pride in their work; when the wages of honest labor liberate families from the brink of hardship. We are true to our creed when a little girl born into the bleakest poverty knows that she has the same chance to succeed as anybody else, because she is an American, she is free, and she is equal, not just in the eyes of God but also in our own.

We understand that outworn programs are inadequate to the needs of our time. We must harness new ideas and technology to remake our government, revamp our tax code, reform our schools, and empower our citizens with the skills they need to work harder, learn more, and reach higher. But while the means will change, our purpose endures: a nation that rewards the effort and determination of every single American. That is what this moment requires. That is what will give real meaning to our creed.

We, the people, still believe that every citizen deserves a basic measure of security and dignity. We must make the hard choices to reduce the cost of health care and the size of our deficit. But we reject the belief that America must choose between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will build its future. For we remember the lessons of our past, when twilight years were spent in poverty, and parents of a child with a disability had nowhere to turn. We do not believe that in this country, freedom is reserved for the lucky, or happiness for the few. We recognize that no matter how responsibly we live our lives, any one of us, at any time, may face a job loss, or a sudden illness, or a home swept away in a terrible storm. The commitments we make to each other – through Medicare, and Medicaid, and Social Security – these things do not sap our initiative; they strengthen us. They do not make us a nation of takers; they free us to take the risks that make this country great.

We, the people, still believe that our obligations as Americans are not just to ourselves, but to all posterity. We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations. Some may still deny the overwhelming judgment of science, but none can avoid the devastating impact of raging fires, and crippling drought, and more powerful storms. The path towards sustainable energy sources will be long and sometimes difficult. But America cannot resist this transition; we must lead it. We cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries – we must claim its promise. That is how we will maintain our economic vitality and our national treasure – our forests and waterways; our croplands and snowcapped peaks. That is how we will preserve our planet, commanded to our care by God. That’s what will lend meaning to the creed our fathers once declared.

We, the people, still believe that enduring security and lasting peace do not require perpetual war. Our brave men and women in uniform, tempered by the flames of battle, are unmatched in skill and courage. Our citizens, seared by the memory of those we have lost, know too well the price that is paid for liberty. The knowledge of their sacrifice will keep us forever vigilant against those who would do us harm. But we are also heirs to those who won the peace and not just the war, who turned sworn enemies into the surest of friends, and we must carry those lessons into this time as well.

We will defend our people and uphold our values through strength of arms and rule of law. We will show the courage to try and resolve our differences with other nations peacefully – not because we are naïve about the dangers we face, but because engagement can more durably lift suspicion and fear. America will remain the anchor of strong alliances in every corner of the globe; and we will renew those institutions that extend our capacity to manage crisis abroad, for no one has a greater stake in a peaceful world than its most powerful nation. We will support democracy from Asia to Africa; from the Americas to the Middle East, because our interests and our conscience compel us to act on behalf of those who long for freedom. And we must be a source of hope to the poor, the sick, the marginalized, the victims of prejudice – not out of mere charity, but because peace in our time requires the constant advance of those principles that our common creed describes: tolerance and opportunity; human dignity and justice.

We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths – that all of us are created equal – is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall; just as it guided all those men and women, sung and unsung, who left footprints along this great Mall, to hear a preacher say that we cannot walk alone; to hear a King proclaim that our individual freedom is inextricably bound to the freedom of every soul on Earth.

It is now our generation’s task to carry on what those pioneers began. For our journey is not complete until our wives, our mothers, and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts. Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law – for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well. Our journey is not complete until no citizen is forced to wait for hours to exercise the right to vote. Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity; until bright young students and engineers are enlisted in our workforce rather than expelled from our country. Our journey is not complete until all our children, from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherished, and always safe from harm.

That is our generation’s task – to make these words, these rights, these values – of Life, and Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness – real for every American. Being true to our founding documents does not require us to agree on every contour of life; it does not mean we will all define liberty in exactly the same way, or follow the same precise path to happiness. Progress does not compel us to settle centuries-long debates about the role of government for all time – but it does require us to act in our time.

For now decisions are upon us, and we cannot afford delay. We cannot mistake absolutism for principle, or substitute spectacle for politics, or treat name-calling as reasoned debate. We must act, knowing that our work will be imperfect. We must act, knowing that today’s victories will be only partial, and that it will be up to those who stand here in four years, and forty years, and four hundred years hence to advance the timeless spirit once conferred to us in a spare Philadelphia hall.

My fellow Americans, the oath I have sworn before you today, like the one recited by others who serve in this Capitol, was an oath to God and country, not party or faction – and we must faithfully execute that pledge during the duration of our service. But the words I spoke today are not so different from the oath that is taken each time a soldier signs up for duty, or an immigrant realizes her dream. My oath is not so different from the pledge we all make to the flag that waves above and that fills our hearts with pride.

They are the words of citizens, and they represent our greatest hope. You and I, as citizens, have the power to set this country’s course.

You and I, as citizens, have the obligation to shape the debates of our time – not only with the votes we cast, but with the voices we lift in defense of our most ancient values and enduring ideals.

Let each of us now embrace, with solemn duty and awesome joy, what is our lasting birthright. With common effort and common purpose, with passion and dedication, let us answer the call of history, and carry into an uncertain future that precious light of freedom.

President Obama ‘Privileged’ To Use MLK Bible, Dr. Cornel West ‘Upset’ [VIDEO]

During a luncheon hosted by members of Congress on Monday (Jan. 21), President Obama said it was a privilege to take the oath of office using Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s personal traveling Bible.

“I had the great privilege that the Bible we used was his Bible and they asked for it to be inscribed,” he said. The other Bible used in the ceremony was owned by President Abraham Lincoln.

The 57th Presidential Inauguration landed not only on the MLK holiday, but also the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.

And what’s done is done. Of course, Dr. Cornel West had a few reservations on Obama’s decision to use the Bible during his moment of “presidential pageantry…”

Lupe Fiasco Thrown Offstage After Anti-Obama Rant

According to concertgoers, rapper Lupe Fiasco was thrown offstage and escorted from a Washington, D.C., concert hall Sunday night after going on an anti-war, anti-Obama rant during a preinaugural concert, the Daily Caller reports.

Josh Rogin, a reporter with Foreign Policy magazine, tweeted late Sunday, “Lupe Fiasco just got thrown off stage here at the Hamilton Live after he went on an anti-Obama diatribe mid set.”

“So Lupe played one anti-war song for 30 min and said he didn’t vote for Obama,” he continued, “and eventually was told to move on to the next song … Lupe refused to move to the next song so a team of security guards came on stage and told him to go” …

Police were called to the home of Chris Brown on Monday night for an alleged domestic violence dispute, which turned out to be nothing more than a hoax and the latest incident in a series of “swatting” pranks.

A caller contacted police shortly before 5 p.m. to report the disruption, telling officers he wasn’t sure if his mother had been shot. When authorities arrived on the scene, members of Brown’s staff were at the residence but Brown was not. The home was searched, but nothing was found.

According to the L.A. Times, the “fast-growing phenomenon” was started by a group of anonymous callers who report false crimes in hopes to bring out responding officers.

Brown is the newest celebrity to join a growing list of stars who have been duped in the swatting scheme. Justin Bieber, Tom Cruise, Ashton Kutcher and Miley Cyrus have also been involved in the recent string of incidents.

Weinstein Co. Nabs Film About Oscar Grant’s BART Shooting

The Weinstein Company has acquired distribution rights for the Forest Whitaker-produced “Fruitvale,” which follows the true story of 22-year-old Bay Area resident Oscar Grant who was unarmed when he was shot dead by police officers at the Fruitvale BART station.

The feature directorial debut of Ryan Coogler, who also wrote the screenplay, premiered to wide critical acclaim and overwhelmingly positive audience reactions Saturday night at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah.

Weinstein snapped up distribution rights at the festival for the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, and South Africa; as well as worldwide international sales rights.

In “Fruitvale,” Grant is played by Michael B. Jordan (“Friday Night Lights”). Per a release from The Weinstein Co.: “This tragic tale recounts the last moments of his life, as he makes plans to be a better partner to his girlfriend and a better father to his four year old daughter. He realizes that change is not going to come easy, as he crosses paths with friends, family, and strangers, each exchange showing us that there is much more to Oscar than meets the eye. But it would be his final encounter of the day, with police officers at the Fruitvale BART station that would shake the Bay Area to its very core, and cause the entire nation to be witnesses to the story of Oscar Grant.”

Beyonce Lip-Synced The National Anthem (Report)

The reports are in: Beyonce lip-synced “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Monday’s inauguration ceremony.

According to a U.S. Marine Band spokeswoman, the international superstar went against her original plans to sing the patriotic tune for reasons unknown to the rep. Page Six reports:

“All music is pre-recorded for the ceremony because there are so many eventualities and conditions that day. We performed, live, the band. But we received last-minute word that Beyonce was going to use the pre-recorded vocal track. Those were the instructions we were given. We don’t know what the [sic] reason why.”

The Washingtonian stated that “it was evident that the band wasn’t actually playing during the song,” a claim that the rep also confirmed. Fellow inaugural artists Kelly Clarkson and James Taylor endured the harsh weather conditions to deliver their performances of “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” and “America The Beautiful,” respectively.

While Beyonce’s camp has yet to respond to the new claims out today, her decision to opt for a pre-recorded version of the National Anthem (à la Whitney Houston) isn’t all that “shocking,” seeing as how it was her voice. But, the singer’s dramatic earpiece pull deserves a major sideye…

Texas Official: 3 Wounded In College Shooting

A shooting on a Texas community college campus wounded three people Tuesday and sent students fleeing for safety as officials placed the campus on lockdown, officials said.

Harris County Sheriff’s Maj. Armando Tello said authorities had detained a person of interest.

Authorities also thought there could be a second shooter, according to a law enforcement official in Washington who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the ongoing case.

Aerial footage from local television stations showed police cars and ambulances parked on the Lone Star College System campus about 20 miles north of downtown Houston. Emergency personnel could be seen tending to people on stretchers, while others ran from a building led by officers.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office had no immediate details, but college spokesman Jed Young confirmed the campus was put on lockdown following reports of a shooter. The college issued an alert on its website telling students and faculty to take immediate shelter or avoid the campus.

Melinda Muse, spokeswoman for the Harris County Health System, said two people were taken to Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital Emergency Center following the shooting.

Tello said three people had been injured.

Who says politics and hip-hop don’t mix? It was definitely mixed and remixed at BET and Hennesey V.S.’s star-studded Inauguration 2013 ball on Monday night. Entertainment A-listers mingled with America’s political elite in a night featuring everything from Hennessy-sponsored drinks and ATL hip hop Godfather Jermaine Dupri scratching vinyl, to sightings of larger-than-life pro-athletes (current and retired) and cable network headliners. The big treat: a healthy dash of old school lyrical sensations MC Lyte and Big Daddy Kane, both looking as if they never aged while spitting rhymes fluently throughout the night. Doug E. Fresh also bounced about the stage afterwards, but nothing seemed to shake Kane’s “Ain’t No Half-Steppin’,” perhaps the seniority showing a bit as everyone drank the Kool Aid of hip hop’s Golden Age.

Politics, of course, reigned supreme – you could bump into D.C. City Councilman Vincent Orange or there was legendary former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb in the flesh. Actor Jeremy Wright, perhaps attempting to reprise his Senator’s role in “Ides of March,” appeared in good company while actress Lynn Whitfield was a smart phone camera favorite that night. Sisters were at their finest while brothers were in a perpetual state of sharp. While much-needed dancehall and soca were noticeably absent from Dupri’ slight crate of tracks, the night did not didn’t disappoint.
