Columbusing: The Trends We Created, Then White Media “Discovered”

$

Christopher-Columbus Day 2014

High fashion glossy mags are believed to have their fingers on the pulse of emerging fashion, beauty and lifestyle trends. So it’s almost laughable to see the cornrows with slicked down baby hairs I rocked as a kid being positioned as the “hottest new trend” in 2014 – proving how out of touch mainstream magazines are with their diverse readership as well as the history behind these cultural mainstays they’re reporting as new.

Columbusing is a term referring to anything that is said be invented or discovered by a mainly white audience when, in fact, it has existed far before that. Everything from music to fashion to hair trends, unique to a particular ethnic experience, somehow surfaces in the mainstream and suddenly it’s “all the rage.”

In celebration of Columbus Day – which falls on October 13 this year – and the cultural jacking Forefather of this nation, let’s take a look at the most obviously Columbused trends of the year.

timberland cara delavigne

1. Timberlands

In the latest case of “but we’ve been rocking these for years,” Elle Magazine can be added to the list of publications that created a culturally out-of-touch and un-researched piece on an urban style that dates far back to pre-mainstream discovery. Since celebrities like Gwen Stefani, Carolyn Delevingne and Rihanna have all been photographed rocking Timberlands, Elle declared in an article that they are now “in.” Yes – although you’ve probably been rocking them since an adolescent and all of your favorite rappers from Jay-Z to Wu Tang clan have sported these since the 90′s, they are NOW in.

2. Baby Hair

While we’re on the subject of hair, let’s talk about Lucky Magazine‘s latest snafu with regard to baby hair, or as they’ve christened it, “slicked down tendrils.”  Lucky Magazine’s social media team covered Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and tweeted a photo of DKNY models sporting what’s known by most of us as baby hair. Lucky put their proverbial foot in their mouths with the misnomer for this 90′s born style and subsequently, social media had a field day with the magazine while setting the record straight on where the trend really came from.

MARC by MARC JACOBS Spring 2015

3. Bantu Knots

There’s something about bold, expressive forms of hairstyles that white people just can’t resist stealing. This year at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Marc Jacobs donned his models in singular bantu knots styled in a mohawk formation for the Spring 2015 Marc by Marc Jacobs collection. Of course, fashion bloggers and editors latched onto this “discovered” hairstyle for dear life, neglecting to research the fact that these “hair nubbins” (as Buzzfeed mistakenly called them) are actually bantu knots – and are absolutely NOT something they own nor invented.

4. Cornrows

Marie Claire found itself in the middle of a Black Twitter firestorm after tweeting a picture of Kendall Jenner wearing her hair partially cornrowed and praising the style as being “bold” and “epic.” Epic? Let’s just go ahead and ignore the millions of Black Women that have been rocking cornrows since the beginning of time,  or that African hair braiding has long been a thriving industry. Judging from the hail of furious responses, I’m guessing Marie Claire will be much more tactful with their words next time.

5. Big Booties

Vogue Magazine is widely known as one of the most respected and highly regarded fashion magazines in the world, but even the “fashion bible” can fall victim to an error in bad judgement. A headline titled, “We’re officially in the Era of the Big Booty,” was not well received – particularly in the African-American community, since Black women have determinedly embraced the hips, curves and voluptuous posteriors mainstream society once hated. Vogue writer Patricia Garcia credits cultural phenoms J. Lo, Miley Cyrus, Iggy Azalea and Kim Kardashian to booties becoming a “thing.” Hello Beautiful’s Danielle Young said it best: “ What Garcia did in this article was blatantly say that a Black woman’s beauty, from our thick curves to our juicy lips…none of that ever mattered…until a White girl got her hands on it.”
miley-cyrus-twerk-unicorn-onesie-twitter
6. Twerking

You can’t talk cultural appropriation without bringing up Miley Cyrus’ eye-roll inducing fascination with twerking. This southern style of rump shaking has been around for over a decade, dating back to the Ying Yang song “Whistle While You Twerk” recorded over 13 years ago. New Orleans bred bounce artist Big Freedia is said to be the godfather of twerk. But thanks to Miley Cyrus and her twerk-filled antics in the “We Can’t Stop” video, America has seen the light and now Vine is filled with bored, obnoxious Suburban girls twerking to the latest popular hip-hop songs. Columbusing at its finest.

With celebrities reeling from the hacking and release of their private nude photos, it’s easy to forget that some pop stars are forced behind-the-scenes to sell sex in order to sell albums and concert tickets. Through Beyond the Lights, writer and director Gina Prince-Bythewood explores the price of fame. In the following clip of this romantic drama, “momager” Macy Jean (Minnie Driver) forces her pop superstar daughter Noni (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) to go topless for a photo shoot. Noni is “supposed to be the girl every guy wants.” Although Noni strips down to appease her mom and others invested in her being a success, Kaz Nicol (Nate Parker) is the only one to notice the pain of being a superstar.

Check out the clip below and the official trailer of Beyond the Lights, which will be released on Nov. 14, on the following page.

Police have arrested a suspect who made a threat Oct. 11 to shoot up Penn State’s HUB-Robeson Center on Monday, Oct. 13. The HUB is the center of university life on the campus in in University Park, Penn.

University Police made the arrest just hours after alerting the community to the potential danger via an emergency alert system. The 20-year-old suspect has been charged with one count of terroristic threats and is expected to be arraigned today, Oct. 13. The suspect has admitted to making the Penn State shooting threat via Yik Yak. Yik Yak is a social media platform that allows users to post anonymous messages that can only be seen by others within a 1.5 mile radius.

Students who saw the threat alerted University Police, and although the message disappeared within minutes, some students managed to capture a screen grab. Police worked with Yik Yak officials to confirm the mobile device used to post the threat and the location of the user.

The suspect is a student who lives off-campus. He told police the message which said he’d bring rifles to the student union building and “kill everyone in Penn State main” was a prank.

“Alarming an entire community is not considered a joke. It’s considered a terroristic threat in this case and this individual will be held accountable,” said Police Chief Tyrone Parham.

The suspect’s name won’t been released until he has been arraigned.

The One Thing ‘Dear White People’ Director Justin Simien is Sorry About

dear white people

By Angela Bronner Helm

Writer and director Justin Simien is sorry if you’re “butthurt” over the name of his debut feature, Dear White People, but Simien’s choice of words, like the tone of the film, stands to create a LOL funny, yet elevated conversation about race and identity in America today.

“Ultimately it’s helpful to have controversy because with smaller black movies, it’s easy to be overlooked,” says the former studio publicist. “But most people when they’ve seen the film, they leave with a completely different idea of what the title means.”

Dear White People is a satirical look at life on a fictional Ivy League campus and follows four black students—The Rebel, The Token, The Poster Child and The Diva—as they negotiate their “black experience” both within the community and on the campus at large. The Sundance Special Jury Award-winning film stars Dennis Haysbert, Tyler James Williams and Tessa Thompson and has landed Simien on Variety’s 2014 “Ten Directors to Watch” list.

“One of the things that was interesting about Dear White People is that I show these archetypes in the beginning, and we just dismantle them to a complete pulp by the end,” says Simien, 31.

“I think the film is saying a lot of things that we don’t want to say. And that to me is the purpose of art. Hold a mirror up and society can figure out what to do.”

Dear White People opens October 17.

“Of course. That’s the biggest regret of my life that I have, was that I didn’t have a child. That’s the one thing that I have a regret about, would be that I didn’t have a child … I’ll never forget seeing Halle on the red carpet and she just had Nahla and I said, ‘Wow she’s so beautiful.’ She said, ‘Vivica, if I knew then what I known now, I would’ve had five of them. She said, ‘The joy I see in her eyes is just like no other high that I’ve ever experienced.’ I don’t get to see my eyes in a child.”

This is definitely a hit for online dating. A woman illegally entered the home of a Thousand Oaks, CA man by attempting to come down his chimney, early in the morning of Oct. 19.

The woman, who has since been identified as Genoveva Nunez-Figueroa, met the resident online. They went on a six dates, at least one of which had occurred at his home.

Nunez-Figueroa, 30, had been stuck in the chimney for two hours. She was just about eight feet from the top when deputies arrived at 5:45 a.m. Firefighters used jackhammers to partially dismantle the chimney. The flue was lubricated with dish soap and the woman was lifted out. She was placed in a stokes basket and hoisted from the roof by a ladder truck.

Although Nunez-Figueroa was conscious the entire time, her condition was not immediately known. She was transported to Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center for evaluation.

Nunez-Figueroa’s intentions are unclear. Police arrested her for illegally entering a residence and providing false information to a peace officer.

The home’s resident didn’t want to be identified, but cautioned others about allowing acquaintances to become too familiar.

“Before you have somebody come in your house really check them out … really give it some time before you let somebody in, because they might want to stay,” he said to KTLA.

Seven Things All Women Need In A Relationship

$

UPTOWN_couple_embracing

By Jordan Gray

Men and women are at an emotional stalemate.

We feel something’s lacking in our relationships. The majority of men aren’t able to penetrate their women fully, nor are women fully opening to their men.

Women aren’t opening because men aren’t giving them what they need. Women feel disappointed and resentful; they are suffering. When women suffer, and they feel like they aren’t being seen, they close off to their men.

Fortunately, you can learn the right tools to be able to more fully penetrate your woman. You can give your partner what she needs, allowing her to feel seen so that she will open again.

Take the time to read through these needs. Let them sink in. Understanding what you can do to help your partner fully open will not only improve your relationship, but it will improve your entire life.

Here are the seven things that all women need in an intimate relationship.

UPTOWN_couple_on_beach

1. To Feel Loved

When women feel loved, they relax and open to us. The arguments dissipate, the sex is abundant, and their nurturing feminine energy flows throughout our lives.

Not feeling loved is the subtext of every argument that you and your partner have.

If she is unhappy that you are going out with your friends, or she’s upset about her day at work, or she is only responding to you with brief snippets of sentences, then the cause is most likely her not feeling loved enough.

Learn to see through her words, actions, and moods and see what the real root of it is.

2. To Feel Safe

There is a war being waged on women’s self-esteem, sexuality, and safety from a very young age.

Because of the barrage of disempowering messages being sent to women regarding their sexuality, women need to have a safe space where they feel that they can trust their partners.

She wants to trust your strength. She wants to feel like you can handle whatever she shows you.

She wants to feel like you will not judge her if she asks for something risqué. She wants to know you won’t collapse in defeat if she tells you to do it “This way” instead.

By creating a safe space for your woman to open up to you emotionally and sexually, you will be giving her a very powerful gift- you allow her to grow within your relationship and undo old emotional damage.

UPTOWN_couple_hugging3. To Feel Seen

Women want to feel seen.

She wants to feel you hearing her, and being aware of her emotional state.

She doesn’t necessarily want you to be affected by her emotional state, but she does want you to be witness to it.

If she is sitting across the room from you and you aren’t picking up on the fact that she is suffering emotionally and on the verge of tears, she will begin to trust you less. She will think, “If he can’t see that I am hurting now, how long will it take him to figure it out? Will I be suffering for days or weeks before he is aware of it or cares enough to help me through this? I guess I have to rely on myself for my own emotional support.”

Life can seem extremely lonely, even within a relationship. You have to constantly show your partner that at least one person will be witness to her and her journey through life. (Hint: that person is you.)

4. To Be Allowed To Be Nurturing

Just as masculine energy has the need to protect, feminine energy has the desire to nurture.

Women want to see the cracks in our armour. They want to see that we trust them enough to open up to them. They want to be able to help us through our sadness.

An integrated, evolved man who has a balanced masculine energy as well as his own sliver of feminine would welcome his woman’s nurturing.

If you are a guy reading this, have you ever held open a door for a woman because it’s the polite thing to do (but more just because she’s a person and it wasn’t even a gender-based act) and she chews your ear off for it? “Oh what? I can’t open the door for myself because I’m a woman?! You sexist pig!”

That is an example of a wounded, unbalanced woman who doesn’t want to accept help from a masculine source. This is exactly how it feels to your partner when you push her away when you feel the most vulnerable. “I don’t need to lay my head down on your chest and tell you about my feelings because I don’t have any!” That is a lie. It’s a lie that serves your purpose of not letting your partner in. This lack of vulnerability and authenticity is what is making you and your partner suffer.

So let her in. She wants to love you.

UPTOWN_couple_cuddling

5. To Feel Sexually Desired

What’s a major difference between your relationship to your partner and your relationship to everyone else in your life? You have sex with your partner.

Women need to feel sexually desired. They want to make sure that you see and appreciate them as a feminine, sexual being.

Praise her body. Feel her and grab her appreciatively. Remind her that you see her as a sexual being and you will both benefit.

6. To Be Appreciated

The feminine in all people responds primarily to praise and appreciation.

Remind your partner that you love her. Tell her that you appreciate what she brings to your life. Show her how much she means to you.

The fastest way to run your relationship into the ground is by ignoring your partner and taking her for granted. Appreciation is the opposite of those things. Appreciation is the embodying this mindset: “I am aware of what you bring to my life, and I want you to be sure that I am aware of it as well.”

So tell her what you appreciate, and tell her often.

UPTOWN_couple_kissing7. To Feel Like She Can Count On You

Life gets pretty messy sometimes.

When life’s unavoidable difficulties arise, do you fall apart under pressure or are you able to bend and not break?

Women want to know that we can handle ourselves when life happens. They want to know that we won’t run and hide when they get a bit “too emotional” for our liking. They want to know that they can count on us.

When you tell your partner you’ll do something, and then you don’t do it, it hurts her. She loses a piece of trust in you that has to be earned back. Even seemingly small things break that trust like you saying that you will wash the dishes shortly after dinner, but washing them the next morning instead.

When enough small transgressions like this are sprinkled throughout your relationship, she will distrust you.

Do what you say you will do, be who you say you are, and be consistent in your actions.

What Do Women Need In A Relationship?

Women want partners that care.

Women don’t want perfect partners; they want men who are striving to be their best selves.

She doesn’t necessarily want someone who has every step of his life pre-planned, but she wants someone with drive and with goals.

She doesn’t necessarily want someone who cries every day, but she does want someone who has the courage to cry in front of her when he needs to.

She doesn’t necessarily want someone who stays in therapy for his entire life, but she does want someone who has the courage to face his own emotional demons.

So put in the work. End the stalemate. Decide that you want to be in the kind of relationship that most people don’t have and you want to put in the effort necessary to become that kind of man.

The women of the world are waiting for us. And they want us to step up just as badly as we want them to open up.

-

The above seven points are not specific to heterosexual females… I personally believe that all people of all genders and orientations crave these things. I am simply writing from my perspective as a hetero cis male.

Authorities fear that Darren Deon Vann, 43, of Gary, Indiana may be responsible for over seven murders over the last two decades. Officers arrested him Friday after discovering the strangled body of Afrika Hardy, 19 inside a Motel 6 hotel room in Hammond, Indiana.

A woman who met Vann online dispatched Hardy to meet him at the hotel Friday for a ‘meeting’ of an confirmed nature.  She later contacted the Hammond police and provided Vann’s contact information after receiving a series of questionable texts from Hardy’s cell phone.

Once police apprehended Vann in Gary, he admitted to the murder and directed officers to abandoned properties in the city where six others bodies were found. One body has been identified as Anith Jones (pictured above), who was reported missing October 8.  Jones was a transplant from Chicago, and ran a stand at an area flea market, according to her sister, Yolanda Nowell. Two other victims have been identified as Teairra Batey, 28, and Christine Williams, 36, both of Gary.

In a statement, Gary Police Cpl. Gabrielle King said:

“We would like to dispel the rumor that there is a serial killer on the loose,” the statement read. “There is a 43-year-old man in the custody of The Hammond Police Department, who led officials to 3 deceased female victims who has claimed responsibility for their demise. Gary Police are closely working with Hammond Police to assist in covering every area of the investigation needed to pursue charges as expeditiously as possible. “

“We have evidence that he was in Texas and all over the United States,” she said. “I would like them to complete the investigation and I don’t want to taint it with the prospect of calling this person a serial killer.”

The Lake County coroner’s office has ruled them all homicides. Vann is a registered sex offender in Austin, Texas who served time in that state for sexual assault.

Fashion Icon Oscar de la Renta Dies at 82

UPTOWN_oscar_de_la_renta

Legendary fashion designer Oscar de la Renta passed away Monday, announced his family and close friends. The “Sultan of Suave” was 82.

The cause of death was not immediately clear. He had been diagnosed with cancer in 2006, but had said that he was “totally clean” last year.

Born July 22, 1932 in the Dominican Republic, de la Renta left home at the age of 18 to study painting at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. He found his love for fashion when the wife of the U.S. ambassador to Spain commissioned him to create a dress for her daughter and the dress wound up on the cover of Time.  He then became the apprentice of Cristobal Balenciaga, who became his mentor. Next, de la Renta moved to Paris and worked for Lanvin before moving to New York to work for Elizabeth Arden.

In 1965, de la Renta started his own line of clothing. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy was among one of his first fans. Nancy Reagan, Hilary Clinton, and Michelle Obama have also donned his gowns, not to mention countless starlets. No awards season is complete without Oscar de la Renta gowns.

de la Renta has won a multitude of fashion awards, including two Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Designer of the Year awards, a CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award, and two COTY awards. However, he remained humble and was always touted as the consummate gentleman.

“He was a true, true gentlemen, in the truest sense of the word — a real bright light — and this is just a terrible, terrible loss for the fashion world,” said Alina Cho, fashion journalist and editor at large at Random House.

By all accounts, he lived life to the fullest and made a point to enjoy every minute of it. At the 92Y “Fashion Talks” series in June 2013 he said, “The only realities in life are that you are born, and that you die. We always think we are going to live forever. The dying aspect we will never accept. The one thing about having this kind of warning is how you appreciate every single day of life.”

de la Renta is survived by his wife of 25 years, Annette, and his son, Moises.

Man Finds Rat Head In His Golden Corral Chili

A Florida man, who was previously a regular at Golden Corral, has sworn off of the buffet chain after finding a rat’s head in his chili.

Billy Wilson, 36, had only taken his first bite at a Cape Canaveral Golden Corral when he discovered the rat remains.

Uptown_GoldenCorralRat

“The first bite I took out of [the chili] was a crunch, and at the time I was like, maybe you know sometimes you get a hard bean inside of chili,” he told MS News Now. “When I saw it, I just went into the bathroom and threw up. I was like, ‘ugh’. I just couldn’t get the taste out of my mouth.”

After the discovery, Wilson’s friends called over the manager of the establishment. “He inspected and was like, ‘Wow that is a rat’,” Wilson said. “So he took pictures of it, moved it around a little bit, took pictures in different angles. He was like me, he was horrified.” The restaurant comped his and his party’s meals.

Wilson, who is “scared of rats,” went to Cape Coral Hospital the next day because he was feeling queasy. He was treated for gastroenteritis and given medications for nausea and stomach flu, according to his discharge reports. He is fully recovered now.

Ray Racila, Wilson’s attorney, has denied accusations of his client making the story up, pointing out that the Golden Corral cameras caught the entire incident as it unfolded. The restaurant, which has neither confirmed or denied Wilson’s claims, is investigating the incident.

Lisa Price Carol's Daughter Joins L'oreal USA

Lisa Price announced on Monday that Carol’s Daughter, the natural beauty brand she started in her Brooklyn kitchen in 1993, has been purchased by L’oreal USA. Price teased the news to her Facebook family with a status update over the weekend that read: “We cannot start over but we can begin now, and make a new ending.” Then on Oct. 20, Price posted a video to her Facebook page sharing her excitement “to join such a wonderful home [L’oreal USA] for my first child, my business” with the millions of Carol’s Daughter fans. The news comes as a relief for the business which was rumored to have faced financial difficulties earlier in the year.

“L’Oréal has a proven track record of helping established companies achieve their full potential while staying true to the core of the brand and they have an understanding of the future of multi-cultural beauty,” Price said in the official press release. “I could not be more proud to begin this next chapter of the Carol’s Daughter brand with them. I know that my mother (Carol) is smiling as well.” Carol’s Daughter will continue operations from their New York headquarters under the current leadership team.

With the help of brand spokeswomen Jada Pinkett-Smith and Mary J. Blige, and investors including Jay Z, the natural hair products found their way into the spotlight and onto retailer’s shelves. In April the multicultural brand began slimming down its portfolio of brick-and-mortar stores and companies associated with the brand. Carol’s Daughter Chief Financial Officer John D. Elmer filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection listing debts of $1 to $10 million. Price combated bankruptcy rumors explaining it was common for most retail businesses to carry debt and that the company was focusing on streamlining its products through online channels and other avenues. Sephora, Target, and HSN, to name a few, have carried Carol’s Daughter products. The female and Black-owned business pulled in $27 million in sales last year, according to the company.

“Carol’s Daughter possesses an expertise in the multicultural consumer segment, a rapidly expanding market that represents an important growth opportunity in the beauty industry,” Frédéric Rozé, President and CEO of L’Oréal USA said in the company’s statement. L’Oreal has been focusing on its visibility in the multicultural market, even signing Oscar nominee Lupita N’yongo to their subsidary Lancome.

Animals can be extremely large, teeny tiny, or anything in between — and that’s fine. But what happens when the creatures that we’re accustomed to being small are freakishly big?

Piotr Naskrecki, an entomologist and photographer at Harvard’s Museum of Comparative Zoology, recently came across a South American Goliath Birdeater, the world’s largest spider. How big is it, you ask? Oh, you know, about the size of a puppy.

I’m not typically scared of spiders, but I certainly would never ever want to encounter one of those critters.

Check out the Goliath Birdeater and more in our gallery of freakishly large animals [that really aren't supposed to be].

Kim Kardashian’s Diva Demands Exposed

uptown-kimkardashian-TAOKim Kardashian‘s diva demands have been exposed, and apparently the former sex tape star doesn’t get out of bed for less than a million dollars. The “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” star and Kanye West’s new wife is making sure North West is set for life. Along with a hefty asking price for endorsements, Kardashian has a long list demands, according to emails obtained during contract negotiations and leaked “secret business emails” Radar Online has obtained. The emails were sent between Kardashian’s people and the owner of a firm interested in hiring her to promote his brand.

According to the representative the unnamed source asked for a price well below what Kardashian deserves. In response the rep wrote, “I think you should definitely come back with the best offer that you can make her from a money standpoint, so that we can save the time going back and forth.” In addition to the so-called low-ball offer, the rep rattled off Kardashian’s demands. For travel related appearances, the star requires five first class tickets, plus 1 coach, a luxury hotel suite for herself and standard rooms for others in her entourage, portal to portal first class exclusive ground transportation, airport greeter service, and security. Kardashian also requires a the company to pay a glam fee, the day rate for her hair and makeup squad and a per diem.

But Kardashian’s diva demands don’t stop there.

The reality star must have total control over her appearance at all times and at the expense of her employer. “We would need approval over photographer, all photos used in print materials, glam squad (hair, makeup, stylist, manicurist), hotel/airline/car service and PR usage,” said the email. In addition, her team would need to give the final approval for the media plan because after all they are PR experts. Sounds like she’s leaving no room for error when it comes to her presentation.

But the diva demands are a minor trade off to gain access to an international superstar with 24.6 million Twitter followers. However if you can’t afford Kim’s asking price, momager Kris Jenner will offer the newest Kardashian star Kendall Jenner, 18, for $500,000 to $1 million.

Comedian Hannibal Buress Calls Bill Cosby a Rapist [VIDEO]

UPTOWN_hannibal_buress_bill_cosby

Although comedy legend Bill Cosby has never been publically accused of rape, comedian Hannibal Buress has called him a “rapist” in a comedy stint last Thursday.

The Philadelphia native and television icon has been accused of drugging and sexually assaulting multiple women. In 2004, Andrea Constand filed a civil suit against Cosby and 13 other women signed on to testify that he’d also sexually abused them. The suit was settled in 2006 for undisclosed terms.

Buress, a regular on Comedy Central with his stand up shows, went in on “The Cosby Show” patriarch at the Trocadero:

“It’s even worse because Bill Cosby has the f****n’ smuggest old black man persona that I hate,” Buress said. “He gets on TV, ‘Pull your pants up black people, I was on TV in the 80s! I can talk down to you because I had a successful sitcom!’ Yeah, but you rape women, Bill Cosby, so turn the crazy down a couple notches.”

The question remains- why aren’t African Americans in such an uproar about Cosby’s indiscretions? My answer, no one is aware of it. Or wants to be.

Cosby’s rape allegations come as a shock, unbelievable even, that such a reverenced, outspoken leader for the African American community could be guilty of such awful crimes. It attacks our whole hearted, innocent opinion of him, striking him down to levels of a pervert, who got away scot-free with abusing women.

We would be forced to confront that we were wrong about him, all these years. All the victim stories against Cosby are all eerily similar in nature, with some dating back as far as the 70′s, before the introduction of the well praised “Cosby Show.”

“I don’t know what I’m doing by telling you this,” concluded the New York based comedian. “I wanted to at least make it weird to watch Cosby Show reruns.”

‘Gotham’ Casting Exposes Ugly Black Face Practice In The World Of Stunts

Warner Bros. recently cancelled plans to “paint down” a white stuntwoman to double for a black actress on Fox’s new show Gotham. WB initially tried to downplay the incident, but later said that it had made a “mistake” and would hire a black stuntwoman instead.

“A mistake was made this week in casting a stunt woman for a guest star in a particular scene on the show,” the studio said in a statement. “The situation has been rectified, and we regret the error.”

Painting down” is a gentler term for black face, and its an issue that the black stunt community has been dealing with for decades. Hollywood labor union SAG-AFTRA condemns the practice calling it “unacceptable” and “improper,” but there is no language in their contract that expressly forbids it. They do say that studios must “endeavor” to find stunt performers who are the same race and gender as the actors they are doubling.

“[With] the process that we go through if we hear about this — and there’s a valid allegation that this is going on — it’s too late to do anything about it,” Adam Moore, the national director of EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity) & Diversity for SAG-AFTRA, told BuzzFeed News. “The first thing we’d like to do is get out ahead of it and make sure it doesn’t happen. If it has happened and we find out about it, we communicate to the signatory producer that we’re aware of an alleged paint-down, and we require that they investigate this allegation.”

64-year-old Jadie David, a trailblazing black stuntwoman, was one of the people who made sure this story got out. When she heard about the incident, she contacted everyone she knew, then proceeded to call the Screen Actors’ Guild and the press. Warner Bros. announced its change soon thereafter.

David and her contemporaries worked hard to pave the way for stunt performers of color. She worked to promote stunt jobs for people of color with stuntman Marvin Walters. In 1971, Walters led the first public protest of the “painting down” controversy after it was discovered that a white stuntman was cast to double for Lou Gossett Jr. in the Warner Bros. film Skin Game. He filed lawsuits on behalf of the Coalition of Black Stuntmen and Women and he won.

Walters, now 76, said, “In 1976, I filed 32 EEO charges against the motion picture industry, and I won five settlement agreements.” David said that damages were paid to all stunt men and women of color as a result of Walters’ efforts.

David is upset to have to deal with the ridiculous practice again.

“Fast-forward to today, and we are again faced with a Caucasian stunt woman who was going to be painted down to double for an African-American actress, ironically again, in a Warner Bros. production. The excuse of the past that there are no qualified African-Americans to hire is gone; there is a huge pool of qualified African-American women to choose from and many were available for work. The studios all have fair employment policies in place, as does SAG-AFTRA. This blatant disrespect of African-American stunt women is beyond the pale. Will the lesson ever be learned?”
