Both league commissioners said in press releases earlier this week that its networks will run pregame and in-game messages to promote donations and encourage fans to support various charities.

“This contribution on behalf of all 32 clubs and players throughout the league will help the American Red Cross assist people in need in the affected areas,” said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. “We salute the dedication of those who have been working so hard on the rescue, relief and recovery effort.”

NBA commissioner David Stern also touched on the natural disaster and the league’s effort to help rebuild the areas affected.

“Many homes and lives were devastated by Hurricane Sandy and our thoughts, abiding concerns and hopes are with all those affected,” he said. “The NBA, the NBPA, our teams, and players are partnering with the Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations to support the relief efforts to help families and communities recover.”

As sports leagues and big-name corporations across the entertainment world pledge their donations, NBC is also holding a benefit concert on Friday for victims of Sandy. Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Mary J. Blige, Christina Aguilera and others are expected to be in attendance.
