Although one of the more lengthy BET Awards shows (and more censored), the annual event delivered with in-demand performers, tons of memorable moments and a Whitney Houston tribute done the right way.
Cissy Houston, brother Gary Houston and close friends Mariah Carey, Monica and Brandy all honored the music icon with an extensive medley of songs that brought nearly every individual in the Shrine Auditorium to their feet.
‘The first time I heard Whitney’s voice, I was mesmerized like the rest of the world,” said a visibly emotional Carey. ”I miss my friend. I miss hearing her voice and laughter. But we’ll always have the music.”
Beyonce and “The Throne,” better known as Jay-Z and Kanye West, swept the awards categories and looked great while doing it. Sitting front row, the “Crazy in Love” singer took home Best Female R&B Artist and Video Director of the Year (“Party”), while the kings of hip-hop won Best Group and Video of the Year (“Otis”).
Amazing vocal performances by Usher, Melanie Fiona, the legendary Maze featuring Frankie Beverly and the return of D’Angelo topped off an extraordinary night.
