A 911 dispatcher is in major trouble after hanging up on a Tampa mother, who called for help when her 10 month old locked himself in the car, authorities said. After she put her son Jack into his car seat, mother Shana Dees went to move the shopping cart when little Jack hit the lock button on the key chain remote, according to The Tampa Tribune.
Frantic because of the temperature inside the car, Dees called 911 and the response she got was shocking.
“We won’t be able to try and gain access to the car unless the child is in some kind of distress and by that point, they may just smash your windows,” said the 911 dispatcher.
Dees told reporters she heard a click. The dispatcher had hung up.
After speaking to the dispatcher, she realized that police may not show up. Panic set in when the boy crawled out of his seat and appeared to be sluggish. Luckily, an off-duty police officer called for help and a nurse came to the rescue.
The nurse grabbed a wrench from the store’s utility closet, smashed the window, and got the boy out. Jack had been in the hot car for 15 minutes before the nurse poured cool water over his head. “He acted when nobody else did, and we’re very grateful he did that,” Dees said of the unknown nurse.
Although she and her husband thanked the nurse, they’re regretful for not getting his name. According to KidsandCars.org, there have been more than 20 deaths this year alone due to children being left in hot cars.
