A Loudon County, Virginia police chief shot his daughter in the garage after mistaking her for an intruder. It is thought that the 16-year-old teen was trying to sneak back into the house without getting caught after leaving earlier that morning.

Deputy Easton McDonald was preparing for work early Tuesday morning when the security alarm went off in his home, signaling the garage door had been opened. He took his gun to investigate when he saw and shot a person walking towards him. After turning on the light, he discovered it was his daughter, whom he just wounded in the torso.

She is recovering in stable condition.

Donnie Lang of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Department said no one’s decided whether any charges will be filed.
