An 11-year-old Boy Scout at a camp in San Diego died from a presumed self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on the morning of June 30, according to the NY Post. Police received a call at 7:36 a.m. Monday that the boy, whose name hasn’t been released, had shot himself in the head at the camp.

Police are investigating whether the wound was purposeful or accidental. The weapon was found in the boy’s tent, but it remains unclear how the gun made its way to the campsite on Fiesta Island.

“This is an extremely sad day for our entire scouting family,” the Boy Scouts of America said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and all those who experienced this tragedy. Our top priority is providing support to our community and for those in the grieving process.”

Grief counselors were sent to speak to other boys at the camp.

Boy Scouts pride themselves on being a positive outlet for young boys to build character through learning valuable skills. The week-long summer program in San Diego allows kids to camp, sail, kayak, and participate in other various activities.
