Joe Rickey Hundley, who slapped a crying 19-month-old baby after telling the baby’s mother to “Shut that n—-r baby up,” pleaded guilty in October and was sentenced on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014.
As the Delta flight left the runway in February of 2013, Hundley, seated beside Jessica Bennett, the mother of the baby, caused a scratch beneath the boy’s eye upon assaulting him.
Amazingly, Hundley’s lawyer objected when he heard the eight-month sentence, as he felt his client, despite a prior minor assault on his record, had received an unnecessarily long punishment. The judge said he sentenced Hundley to a higher sentence in part because of his criminal history, according to AP. Prosecutors had recommended only six months in prison, but Hundley will serve eight months in a federal prison.
