Every kind of media– from the news to romantic comedies– tells us that the perfect romantic relationship is the monogamous union of a man and woman. While it seems like the whole world believes in this ideal, some experts believe that from a biological standpoint, men and women simply aren’t meant to be in lifelong monogamous relationships. According to the book Sex at Dawn: The Prehistoric Origins of Modern Sexuality, our ancestors enjoyed free love until the beginning of agriculture when men began to worry if their children were theirs because they wanted to pass down their property.
To Have and To Hold: Optimistic Monogamy
So, I wonder: while most people still cling to this idea of love, is it the most practical? Does monogamy work for everyone? Is it contributing to our high divorce rates?
