Bryeon Hunter

The search for missing 1-year-old Bryeon Hunter might be over as police have confirmed the discovery of a child’s body in the Des Plaines River, according to The Chicago Tribune.

Robert Larson of Westchester, Ill. found the body among a pile of logs along the west bank after weeks of combing the river for remains. He immediately went ashore to call authorities who pulled the child out of the water and took the body to the medical examiner’s office for identification.

“Today, through the work of a lot of people, and a volunteer in particular who was out in a kayak today, was able to come across the remains of a very young boy and we were called in and with conjunction with a lot of other departments, we made the recovery today and its very consistent with the remains of the little boy who was missing,” said Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart.

The child’s formal identification will take place on Wednesday (May 15).

Hunter went missing back in April after his mother Lakeshia Baker claimed they were attacked and beaten by three Hispanic men before the young boy was abducted in the Chicago suburb of Maywood. All three men have since been cleared of any wrongdoing, while Baker and her boyfriend Michael Scott– who is not the father of the missing child– have been charged with first-degree murder.

Baker told investigators that she and Scott beat Hunter with a belt and plastic hangers April 15, leaving him to die on the bathroom floor of their Maywood apartment. The couple later confessed to disposing the body, but gave conflicting stories about where it was placed in the river and by whom.

A judge ordered Baker be held without bail and Scott was held in lieu of $750,000 bail.
