The mother of an abducted 1-year-old boy is being questioned by police after a search Wednesday was suspended due to inclement weather, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Authorities believe her account is riddled with inconsistencies and fear that the young child might be dead.
The search began Tuesday (April 16) when 23-year-old Lakeshia Baker reported her son Bryeon Hunter missing after they were allegedly attacked and beaten by three Hispanic men. An AMBER Alert was issued and authorities searched the Des Plaines River.
Hunter was last seen in the Chicago suburb of Maywood.
Now, police are saying Baker’s story is inaccurate.
“We believe this to be an isolated event and not one that was described as three men committing an abduction,” said Maywood Police Chief Tim Curry on Wednesday. Curry confirmed Baker was beaten, but said police don’t know the identity of the culprit.
The police chief told NBC Chicago that he was “not optimistic” about finding Hunter alive.
Baker’s boyfriend– who is not the father of the missing boy– was also reportedly questioned, as well as her 4-year-old son.
The AMBER Alert for Hunter is still in effect. He was last seen wearing a blue, striped long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans and blue Nike shoes. He is 2 feet tall and weighs 30 pounds.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Maywood Police Department at 708-450-4471.
