No Duh: Anderson Cooper Is Gay

WELP. The inevitable finally happened: Anderson Cooper has written the words “I am gay” somewhere that wasn’t in a leather-bound journal buried deep in some massive trunk hidden away in the basement of the Vanderbilt mansion. This morning, Daily Beast columnist Andrew Sullivan has posted an exclusive email from the dashing Mr. Cooper in which he finally reveals his sexuality, because there were still people in this world who figured he was only hanging out with Kathy Griffin in order to get into her pants.

Sullivan’s post this morning is in response to last week’s Entertainment Weekly cover story in which the author claimed that actors are coming out in a new way—revealing their sexuality with just a shrug and a relaxed attitude. Thankfully, Sullivan agrees with me; he writes:

We still have pastors calling for the death of gay people, bullying incidents and suicides among gay kids, and one major political party dedicated to ending the basic civil right to marry the person you love. So these “non-events” are still also events of a kind; and they matter. The visibility of gay people is one of the core means for our equality.

Bahamian Rhapsody

bahamas lone tree “It’s about that big.”
“That’s HUGE.”
“Well, once you taste it, it goes quick.”
Heading to the George Town airport to hop a flight back to New York, I thought back to this exchange. Talk dessert to me, and I’ll never forget it.

The conversation was with a Nassuvian describing his favorite Bahamian sweet, the national dessert known as guava duff. But it could have just as easily been about the Bahamas itself.

The Bahamas are big. Huge even. As in 700 islands, divvied into 14 regions. While both of the main islands, Grand Bahama or New Providence, are fine intros to the Bahamian way, if that’s as far as you go, you haven’t seen much at all. The richest sights are in the Family Islands, called such because every local has roots there. These 12 regions are also referred to as the Out Islands. My travels took me from the outside in, starting with Eleuthera and ending with The Exumas.

ELEUTHERA: HARBOUR ISLAND NORTH ELEUTHERA

Briland, as it’s known locally, looks like a Nantucket nabe reimagined on a 3.5 x 1.5 mile cutout. Just an hour by plane from Miami, it’s a chic retreat where celebrities and civilians with private planes unwind. Still, there’s no pretension, but a warmness that reminds you that strangers are only friends you haven’t yet met. Walking along the pink sand beaches or past the colorful bungalows, you are just as likely to be invited to church as you are to have a goombay smash, a potent rum drink, at JJ’s Cocktail Lounge.

Lure of the Landing
The bar and restaurant at this 12-room boutique respite draws an international crowd. The property’s logo is the Afroed-silhouette of the owner’s mom–—the first Miss Bahamas—and appears on T-shirts, totes, and the label for the house wine and spirits. Sit at the bar for predinner cocktails made with Afro Head rum. Angus tenderloin with sweet garlic butter or the spicy crab capellini are consistently popular entree choices. The pudding-like Belgian chocolate cake is made for sharing. Not made for sharing: Afro Head tiramisu. 242.333.2707 / 2740. harbourislandlanding.com

Cocktails & Conversation
The ritual cocktail hour for guests of The Dunmore begins at 6:30 p.m. and I was motioned into the library to join others for conversation and the signature Rooster, a blend of papaya and pineapple juices mixed with bourbon. I went a little early for a tour of the 16-unit hotel (the ocean front Aqua North and Aqua South cottages get the highest marks), which reopened in December 2010. Sade, Andy Garcia, Lenny Kravitz, and the Ralph Lauren clan are among the household names who have been entertained at the property. 242.333.2200. dunmorebeach.com

Ready To Rock
At Rock House’s restaurant, the daily seafood special gives fresh-to-death new meaning because the trip from ocean to plate is mere hours. Depending on the season, expect seared tuna steak atop wasabi cream, or grilled mahimahi with caramelized onions. Last seating is at 8:30p.m. In high season, ressies are often booked four weeks in advance. However, a couple of days advance notice will usually guarantee a terrace table with glorious views of sunsets over the bay. 242.333.2053. rockhousebahamas.com

THE EXUMAS

What can’t be escaped is the blue of it all. The waters surrounding the 365-island chain are a kaleidoscope of azure, cobalt, ultramarine, and all shades in between. “Exuma blues” is what it’s called. Great Exuma is your starting point for yachting, fishing, and diving excursions. Being in, or near, the water here will become your obsession.

Grand Isle Resort & Spa
The new villas at Grand Isle Resort & Spa are made for groups. The two-level Bahia Mar villa is sizeable enough for an intimate destination birthday party. Each villa has a golf cart for running errands—like a run to the nearby liquor store. A concierge can arrange for a private chef on days you don’t eat at the resort’s restaurant, Palapas Bar and Grill. On the powdery Emerald Bay Beach you’ll share sunscreen with 30- somethings from France, the UK and Canada. The infinity pool allegedly shuts down at 9 p.m., but night swims continue as late as 11 p.m. Unless there’s a conflict with a beach bonfire—or an impromptu after-hours party in the penthouse. 214.393.2841 | 242.358.5000. grandisleresort.com

Island Invasion
It’s just a five-minute boat ride to Stocking Island, home to beach grill Chat N’ Chill, a de rigueur stop for boaters and urbanites who find themselves around the Exuma way. For laying out and getting sun, it’s a BYO-beach-accessories type of place. Even beyond the Sunday pig roast, you’ll find an ample supply of entertainment, food, and drinks already in place. A faux-hawked Canadian boater—who has been making annual stops for the last decade—steered me toward the thyme-flecked grilled chicken. A tanned, raspy-voiced cohort chimed in with a vote for the grilled fish. Between the countless cups of goombay smash and merrymaking boaters docked there for the day, it was a more-than-all-right way to spend an afternoon. 242.336.2700. chatnchill.com

Exuma Cays
Barratarre Dock was the 8 a.m. departure point for a day-long boat tour of Exuma Cays (pronounced “keys”). Captain Andrew and his assistant from 4Cs Adventures took our group of seven on an exploration of the 100-mile stretch of isles. The trip is a cross between a TMZ celebrity home tour and an aquatic petting zoo. Over the roar of the motor, the Captain called out private islands owned by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. Then there was the überexclusive Musha Cay, the 700-acre island owned by magician David Copperfield (available to you for a mere $37,500/night). Near Big Major Cay, shipmates squealed in delight more than the pigs who swam out to the boat to eat the bread scraps tossed into the water. At Compass Cay, we swam with nurse sharks who lazily flopped onto the wooden dock to be hand-fed mahimahi morsels. Tour is $160 per person, cash only. 242.464.1720 | 242.345.2352. exumawatertours.com

Oprah’s Big Win + New Show

The ratings are in and Oprah Winfrey can finally breathe easy.

Related: Alicia Keys To Honor Oprah Winfrey At Annual Black Ball

According to Discovery’s chief executive David Zaslav, OWN’s viewership has drastically improved in comparison to this time last year.

“We’re significantly ahead of where we thought we would be last quarter. After a 14 percent ratings gain in the first quarter in its core audience of women 25-54, OWN grew viewership around 20 percent in the latest period,” he said. “And so far in the third quarter, ratings are up more than 50 percent. Overall, that leaves the channel up about 25 percent year-to-date.”

After a rocky first year and a reported $300 million lost in advertising, Winfrey struck ratings gold with exclusive interviews from Bobbi Kristina, 50 Cent, Paris Jackson, the entire Kardashian family and more.

To keep the momentum going, OWN has just ordered the reality series Life With La Toya which will offer an “up close and personal look” at La Toya Jackson‘s life as she “juggles the many demands of her famous family, finding time for lifelong friends and dealing with a growing entertainment business empire.”

The show is set to premiere next year.

Kofi Annan To Step Down As Syria Envoy

Kofi Annan said Thursday he will step down from his high-profile role as special envoy for Syria at the end of the month, delivering blistering criticism of world powers’ failure to unite over the country’s escalating violence.

At an impromptu press conference, Annan said he accepted the role when it seemed the international community led by the U.N. Security Council could help end the violence, enforce a cease-fire and bring about a political transition.

But the former U.N. secretary-general told reporters he cannot go on when the 15-nation council provides no backing for his role, particularly because of the standoff between its five veto-wielding members: Russia and China on one side, the United States, Britain and France on the other.

He was appointed special envoy in February of last year.

“When the Syrian people desperately need action, there continues to be finger pointing and name calling in the Security Council,” he told reporters. “It is impossible for me or anyone to compel the Syrian government and also the opposition to take the steps to bring about the political process.”

If things go as planned, Beyonce Knowles will be adding “documentary director” to her ever-growing resume.

The Los Angeles Times reports the 30-year-old singer/actress and representatives at agency IMC have been shopping around a nonfiction film to Hollywood studios about her personal life and outstanding career. The movie is said to be “a mix of music and personal study, blending concert footage with confessional interview.”

Knowles is set to serve as director and producer of the film which has already captured 20 minutes of footage.

Assuming that the film gets picked up and follows the pattern of other musical documentaries (ex. Justin Bieber, Katy Perry), viewers could finally get a glimpse into the international superstar’s ultra private life.

Puerto Rican Adviser Tweets Racial Jabs At Obama

UPTOWN_barack_michelle_obamaBy Orion McBean

You would think Pres. Barack Obama receives enough shade from Mitt Romney and the Republican party, but there’s someone in Puerto Rico who couldn’t resist a drank of that hater-ade too.

Heidi Wys, the main adviser to House of Representatives President Jennifer Gonzalez, went on Twitter last week and directed racial insults to Obama, soon after he announced that First Lady Michelle Obama’s birthday was coming up.

“Who cares?” wrote Wys, a white member of Puerto Rico’s New Progressive Party. “Take her to Burger King, buy her a sundae with double banana [sic], take her to your homeland, Kenya!”

This wasn’t the first time Wys shared her racial bigotry towards Pres. Obama via Twitter. In response to a post by a Puerto Rico online newspaper on July 30, Wys advised reporters to investigate the authenticity of Obama’s birth certificate, jumping on the right-wing bandwagon to prove he isn’t a natural American citizen.

“I fight with Obama with all the strength in my heart and passion as a descendant of germans [sic]!!” she wrote.

On an earlier date, Wys sent yet another tweet to Obama declining a general invitation to have dinner with the President.

“Wah! Wah! I feel like vomiting! Dinner with a guy borned [sic] in Kenya and claims he was borned [sic] in Hawaii!” she wrote, clearly enraged with misspellings and all, on July 18.

We understand everyone may not support Obama, but any form of explicit and racial hatred is totally unacceptable. We hope a proper investigation will take place and result in Wys’ resignation or termination.

Dear Sistas, Give Gabby’s Hair A Break

Dear Sistas,

I wanted to talk to you about our little one Gabby Douglas. At sixteen years old, Gabby has become an Olympic Gold medalist, ranking her a world-class gymnast. The online support for her has been wonderful. The #GoGabby hashtags during competition and the many gifs of the Virginia native in truly impossible poses are enough to make me want to attempt the splits…Don’t worry, I’m not.

The problem is the other chatter.

There’s an ongoing conversation taking place, both online and off, about Gabby’s hair. Apparently some find it ‘unkempt’ and are displeased. Even more surprising is that this discussion isn’t taking place amongst white people, or fellow gymnasts or even young men trying to see what’s good – but instead, the majority of the criticism is taking place amongst other Black women.

Chris Bosh “Moves” To Texas To Pay Less Child Support

UPTOWN_chris_boshBy Mahogany Linebarger

Miami Heat basketball player Chris Bosh and his lawyers have found the loophole of all child support loopholes.

Bosh recently filed for a change of address, claiming residency in Texas rather than Florida where he lives with his wife Adrienne Bosh. The address change is an effort to pay less child support to his daughter’s mother Allison Mathis.

Bosh currently pays approximately $2,600 a month to Mathis. She claims it isn’t enough to pay her mortgage and bills now that she has lost her job. In addition, Mathis reportedly applied for government assistance. And on top of all this, Bosh also blocked Mathis’ efforts last season to join the cast of “Basketball Wives,” which would have provided her with some ends.

So how does a simple change of address mean less child support, you ask?

Well, in Florida Bosh is required to pay 3 percent of his take-home NBA pay, which would provide Mathis with about $30,000 a month in child support. Buuut Texas requires about 1 percent less in child support.

The Florida home Bosh resides with Adrienne is reportedly worth $12 million, whereas his Dallas “residence” is worth a measly (in his world, of course) $73,000. Bosh earns about $18 million annually playing for the Heat.

A Florida judge will make a ruling to determine Bosh’s residency as of late August 2012.

A 21-year-old man was shot in the head and killed while handcuffed in the back of a patrol car Saturday night. Now police have launched an investigation to determine what happened.

Chavis Carter was a passenger in a pickup truck that was stopped by police in Jonesboro, Ark., Saturday night, according to KAIT, an ABC-affiliated television station. An officer reportedly found some marijuana, and ran Carter’s information. He was wanted on a warrant out of Mississippi, so officers placed him in a patrol car.

“As protocol, he was handcuffed behind his back, double-locked and searched,” said Jonesboro Police Department Sgt. Lyle Waterworth in an interview with WREG-TV.

Just minutes later, police said they heard a thumping noise, turned around and found Carter shot in the head.

Sources Name Alleged Gunman In Wisconsin Temple Shooting

Oak Creek, Wisconsin (CNN) — The man who shot six people to death and wounded three others during a rampage at a Sikh temple in a Milwaukee suburb was an Army veteran who may have been a white supremacist, according to a law enforcement source involved in the investigation.

Law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation named him Monday as Wade Michael Page, 40. One law enforcement official said he owned the gun used in the shooting legally.

He had apparently served on active duty, a U.S. official familiar with his record said. The source declined to give further details.

The officials asked not to be named because they are not authorized to speak on the record about the shooting investigation.

Relatives of Satwant Kaleka, the president of the temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, said Monday that he was killed fighting the attacker.

“From what we understand, he basically fought to the very end and suffered gunshot wounds while trying to take down the gunman,” said Kanwardeep Singh Kaleka, his nephew.

Gang Of Thrones

“Black-on-black” crime– especially gang violence– happens every day, but doesn’t receive the same attention as more racially charged incidents. We delve into the whys of intra-racial crime and what’s being done about it.

When Jason J. Davis set out to settle a score with a compatriot of the Bloods who “had messed up,” his mission was clear: teach him a brutal lesson. The then 23-year-old pursued his prey with the venomous rage of a man with a personal vendetta, even though they had no beef. “That was just his penalty,” he told UPTOWN magazine recently in a telephone interview from his home in Harlem.

The attempted execution took place one day in October 2003, just as a chill began to hang in the air of Dover, Del. Davis and two other gang members rode around with their target in a car and stabbed him repeatedly—a total of 16 times—until he was on the brink of death.

The victim survived, and Davis spent the next four years on the run. He became one of Delaware’s Most Wanted before he was finally captured in May 2007 as he walked down a street in Lebanon, Pa. He pleaded to a charge of conspiracy to commit a felony and spent a year in prison. A charge of attempted murder was dropped after prosecutors failed to prove a case.

Today, Davis, 31, is a changed man. He joined forces with Terrie M. Williams, founder of the Terrie Williams Agency public relations firm and The Stay Strong Foundation, which is dedicated to youth advocacy, to work as a mentor. He also became Williams’ mentee. Davis heard about the PR guru through another Blood named DaShaun Morris, who was writing a gang-awareness book, War of the Blood in My Veins: A Street Soldier’s March Toward Redemption. Williams promptly recruited Davis to write poetry for the project.

It’s a good thing. Davis had been a poster child for gang-affiliated bloodshed, which is a neighborhood scourge in urban cities across the nation—New York to Philadelphia, Chicago to Los Angeles. Elected officials, law enforcement authorities, and more and more “civilians” continue to grapple with gang violence, even as the FBI reports that violent crimes and murders declined by about 6 percent in the first half of 2011.

The reality of black-on-black crime is not only a tragedy in black communities, but it has become the rallying cry of conservatives in the wake of the Trayvon Martin shooting. Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old African-American, was fatally shot by George Zimmerman, a white Hispanic, in Sanford, Fla., after a still-contested altercation in February. Because Martin was unarmed and Zimmerman was not initially charged, there have been scores of emotional protests across the country. Yet, many on the right say that Zimmerman is a statistical anomaly, and the truth is that a black man is most likely to die at the hands of another black man.

During an episode of ABC’s This Week, Washington Post columnist George Will said that despite the Martin tragedy, “150 black men are killed every week in this country” and “about 94 percent of them by other black men.”

And though pundits like Edward Wyckoff Williams have pointed out that whites, as the largest racial group, commit the majority of violent crimes in America, it almost seems like a hollow statistical tit for tat. In an op-ed column for TheRoot.com,Wyckoff Williams writes, “With respect to aggravated assault, whites led blacks 2–1 in arrests; in forcible-rape cases, whites led all racial and ethnic groups by more than 2–1. And in larceny theft, whites led blacks, again, more than 2–1.”

REASONS

Yet, while these statistics negate the conservative agenda of painting all violent offenders as African-American men, there is still the very real issue of black-on-black violence and gang activity. It is a particularly pressing issue as summer approaches, because this is when cities traditionally see a spike in crime. Consequently, there are those working tirelessly to rid the streets of guns and break the backs of gangs.

Terrie Williams, who worked as a clinical social worker before public relations, and who is the author of Black Pain: It Just Looks Like We’re Not Hurting, believes a lot of violence is a manifestation of pain and untreated depression. “We prey on one another,” she says about all crime— regardless of the race of the perpetrator or victim. “It’s what it is. I showed some kids at an at-risk high school a public service announcement that we did for StoriesThatHeal.com, a web site for individuals living with mental illness, and this kid gets up very courageously and says that he stabbed somebody like seven times. After that, he said something that really pierced my spirit. He said that he wasn’t even mad at the person he stabbed.”

Williams says that part of the problem of crime in black communities is the way blacks are treated in society. “Every day we are made to feel less than, like we don’t matter. I say that in front of mixed groups because it’s true. Barack Obama is the president of the United States and people call him out of his name. He doesn’t matter to them. We have to change the dialogue. That’s what I’m trying to do.”

THE SNITCHING SOLUTION

Troi Torain, the former Star & Buc Wild radio show shock jock of Philadelphia was so incensed by violence in the black community that he launched the Start Snitching campaign last year. The program, aimed at getting residents to report gang activity, has achieved moderate success by using the Internet and anonymous tips to help tackle violence. Since mid-October, Torain has been using his @startsnitching Twitter account to inform followers about unsolved crimes in Philadelphia and around the nation.

“The Internet provides a better way for people, especially in small communities, to build a unified front to help with the apprehension of those committed to a lower standard of living,” says the former host of the morning show on Philly’s 100.3 FM “The Beat”. “Although some will argue that the message of the police to ‘protect and serve’ gets lost in translation, [as] people of color [we] have to hold ourselves responsible for the future of our children.”

Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter has resolved to tackle the problem, too. During the inaugural address for his second term last January, he called crime in the black community a local and national epidemic that has not sufficiently been talked about, much less tackled. He lamented that too many Philadelphians feel unsafe in their own neighborhoods.

Nutter urged residents to have an honest conversation about the things that are holding them back—including the economy and joblessness—and asks, “What are we prepared to do about them [as a community]?” The most sobering part of his speech was when he turned to the murder rate.

Of the 317 people who were murdered in Philadelphia last year, 83 percent were killed with a handgun, and nearly 75 percent of those were African-American men, he said. Also, about 80 percent of those accused of the crimes were African-American men.

One way to tackle Philadelphia’s crime problem is to add more police to the streets, Nutter says, explaining that there will be 120 new officers on foot patrol in time for summer. Additionally, he announced plans to build partnerships with the community through community policing.

“Working with mayors around the country and with leaders in our own community… we have started to develop strategic action plans to deal with the proliferation of illegal guns and the fact that people and their guns are wiping out an entire generation of African-American men and boys,” Nutter said during the address. “We are developing a new approach, which we will roll out in the coming months, to getting these illegal guns off our streets—targeting the people who have them, the people who are supplying them, and the neighborhoods that they’re operating in (five police districts account for almost 50 percent of the homicides in the city)—and working with our partners at all levels of government to go after them aggressively and relentlessly. Every day.”

CHICAGO GANGLAND

Earlier this year, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel called on the Illinois General Assembly to pass a law to target gang members with federal-style racketeering cases. The mayor’s call for antigang legislation comes as murders rose 60 percent citywide for the first three months of 2012, compared to the same period last year. Most of those slayings were gang-related.

According to the FBI and the most recent Chicago Crime Commission Gang report, the city and Cook County is estimated to have more than 68,000 gang members. Prominent gangs include the Gangster Disciples, the Black Disciples, the Black P Stones, the Vice Lords, and the Latin Kings. The legislation would allow racketeering prosecutions of anyone charged with participating directly or indirectly in gang activity through violent crimes, gun and drug crimes, or the collection of illegal debts. A conviction would carry a prison term of 10 to 30 years, along with a fine of up to $250,000.

“We cannot fight criminal gang violence alone and need additional tools to go after gangs in our city and throughout Illinois,” Emanuel wrote in a letter in March to Illinois Senate President John Cullerton.

ESCAPE

When Jason Davis returned home to Harlem following his release from prison in 2008, New York City was a hub of crime, homicides were up about 4 percent compared with the previous year. But the unmarried father of four children, who range in ages from 2 to 11, knew he needed to stay on a straight and narrow path. He worked closely with Williams, which helped, he says.

Davis also stays straight by remaining a member of the Bloods. He says he is still an active, but nonviolent, member, meaning he avoids criminal activities that gangs are known for, but instead counsels young men away from violence, preaching nonviolence like a Baptist minister in the pulpit on a Sunday morning.

“I truly believe when you know better, you do better,” says Davis. “The careless attitude of many criminals comes from giving up on the world. Many feel like no one cares if they live or die, let alone kill, rob, or steal from one another. Teaching people the means to make ends meet without hurting others is hard when you’ve been committing crimes and acts of violence as a way of life. But I’m committed.”

Davis, who experienced a violent upbringing, has learned that much of the violence he engaged in was, in part, the result of post-traumatic stress disorder. He says that just before he was arrested on the attempted murder charge, he was in such mental anguish that he was misdiagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic when he went to a hospital seeking help. Symptoms included suicidal and racing thoughts, agitation, and hallucinations, he recalls. He also suffered from night terrors because he worried that killers that were mirror images of him were stalking his family.

“I didn’t feel bad about killing someone who looked like me,” Davis says. “Killing a white person could be done, but what would I gain? I might gain news coverage, but that would limit you from doing other crimes. You stick to your people that no one cares about—other gangbangers. Who cares if a gangbanger kills another banger? But they care if, while trying to catch another gangbanger, you spray bullets at a 9-year-old girl who got straight A’s in school. The successful ones that people talk about in the neighborhood are the ones who kill each other and never get caught because it’s so under the radar. You make a name for yourself.

“Today, I preach against killing each other every chance I get,” he continues. “There are other ways to make a name for yourself, like holding down a job, being a good parent, and owning your own home. Those are things to strive for.”

The Urban Professional’s Battle with Guilt

“I knew I wanted more than what my neighborhood had to offer the first time I left home and heard birds sing. No birds sing in Camden.”

This was my mother’s story. Born and raised in the projects, she’d later become a Rutgers graduate and move with her husband to the suburbs. I was born a year later, knowing absolutely nothing of the streets. The  first time I saw a prostitute on Broad Street my mother made me duck down in the car and close my eyes.

Even today, there is a guilt that hangs over urban migrants for reaching towards “better.” There is a “palate change” that isolates them from childhood friends and sometimes relatives. In a recent article on SingleBlackMale.org, the author describes the cultural metamorphosis that occurs.

“The jokes he made years ago about me talkin’ white weren’t so funny anymore. Bagging b*tches was a language I could no longer understand…What was I supposed to do? What was I supposed to say? I wasn’t trying to brag. I was just telling him about my life.”

Growth produces change and sometimes that may mean relationships will too. Why should anyone be made to feel guilty for striving towards a better quality of life? In the words of Wayne Dyer,”[a person] may succeed in making another feel guilty by blaming him. But [one] won’t succeed in changing whatever it is about [them] that makes [them] unhappy.”

A person who becomes successful unknowingly forces their former crew to ask themselves the question “What am I doing with my life?” And especially if Mr. & Mrs. Mediocre try to project their inferiority complexes onto a person striving for upward mobility, we should surround ourselves with people willing to celebrate instead of stifle the joy of our accomplishments.

Uplift: Magic

UPTOWN_uplift_magic_080612If you can dream it, you can do it -- Walt Disney

Do you believe in magic?

We usually assign that belief to the children. Once we have experienced much of the world and its ways, the magic may seem to disappear.

About a week ago, I was picking my children up from camp. Rain was pouring down. My youngest son questions from his car seat, “Are we going in to get them?”

I knew he was dreading the walk across the street as much as I was. Just then, I remembered a technique I utilize in college when I forgot my umbrella. I would ask God to stop the rain until I arrived home. Honestly, I cannot remember a time that it did not work. I told my son about the technique and he tightly closed his eyes, “God, can you make the rain stop.”

Within a few seconds, the rain stopped. I was a little surprised that it worked, but I went along for the ride. He smiled, “It really worked Mommy!”

We ran across the street and picked up the girls. On our way back to the car, the rain began to pour down on us. We jumped into our respective seats and buckled up. On our way home, my son told the girls about his magic, “Watch,” he says, “God, can you make it stop raining?”

Sure enough, the rain trickles out and the sky clears. The kids run into the house without a drop of water touching them. I sat in the car in awe. Did I really believe what just happened? My son believed, and the universe catered to his belief.

In magic, we must have childlike trust and belief for it to truly work. If you believe, then it is so.

In honor of cultivating the magic in our lives, here are our Well-Life Maintenance Goals for August.

Spiritual: Believe in your dreams. Do something, a small step, to move you closer to your goals. Call upon the magic that exists all around you to assist you in making your dreams come true.

Mental: Read one of you favorite books from childhood. Get in touch with the child within and connect to his or her needs. My favorite book was Green Eggs and Ham … looking forward to reading it again, or having one of my kids read it to me.

Emotional: Let your emotions join the party. As children, we do this naturally. If we are happy … we laugh. If we are sad … we cry. If we are mad … we scream. Do not abandon all self-control, but allow yourself to express what you feel.

Physical: What can you do to improve the health of your physical being? There is always something we can add (ex. more veggies) or subtract (ex. less chips). Find out what your body needs and do it.

Welcome to Uplift at UPTOWN. If you are just joining us this week, my name is Anita Kopacz. I am an author and spiritual adviser with a passion to see people thrive! Collective energy possesses a divine power that can remove stubborn obstacles and open locked doors. My intention is to join our UPTOWN family in spirit and forge our return to healthy living. With the Well-Life Maintenance Program, together we will take small steps in four areas of our lives to improve our quality of living. The four areas include Spiritual, Mental, Emotional, and Physical. You can find more in my book, Finding Your Way: Alphabetical Keys to the Divine.

Somewhere between covering the front of a Kellogg’s Corn Flakes box and searching for an ink pen to sign million dollar deals, Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas has found the time to respond to the backlash surrounding her hair.

While making her interview rounds, the 16-year-old phenom addressed the incredibly ridiculous comments about her “unkempt” and “embarrassing” tresses.

“I don’t know where this is coming from. What’s wrong with my hair? I just simply gelled it back, put some clips in it and put it in a bun. Are you kidding me? I just made history. And you’re focusing on my hair? I just want to say, we’re all beautiful inside out. I don’t think people should be worried about that. Nothing is going to change. [...] So you might as well stop with all the comments.”

Unmoved by the public’s opinion, Douglas said the gel, clips and bun will remain as she competes in the uneven bars on Monday and beam on Tuesday.

America, get over yourselves.
