Republicans Call Obama an Abusive Boyfriend

UPTOWN_AFSP_obama_abusive_boyfriend_ad

A new GOP-sponsored ad, that was paid for by Americans for Shared Prosperity, features a young woman comparing President Obama‘s time in office to an abusive relationship.

“In 2008, I fell in love. His online profile made him seem so perfect. Smart, handsome, charming, articulate, all the right values — I trusted him,” says a smiling young woman at the start of the commercial that opens like your typical dating site ad. She continues, “But by 2012 our relationship was in trouble, but I stuck with him because he promised he’d be better. He’s great at promises.”

Republicans have decided to use the hot button issue of domestic violence to their advantage. Their party has an abysmal track record with female voters, and this ad is their attempt to lure some women to their side.

“He told me we’d be safe,” the woman in the ad says. “Have you looked in the news? He’s in my emails and text messages, spying on me, but ignoring real threats … He thinks the only thing I care about is free birth control, but he won’t even let me keep my own doctor.”

Americans for Shared Prosperity head, John Jordan, says he wanted to push back against the Democrats’ accusations of a “war on women” that started in the 2012 campaign cycle. “The goal here is to communicate with women voters in a way that outside groups and campaigns haven’t,” Jordan said. He added, “Women voters care as much about the economy, jobs, death, and spending as do other groups — but certainly on the Republican side there’s been no effort to reach that group.”

The Americans for Prosperity ad is slated to air nationally during major news shows and digitally for national print publications.

A Florida high school student has been arrested for the vicious assault and rape of his teacher at South Dade Senior High School on Friday.

Victor Marshall Nash, 18, is charged with attempted first degree murder, sexual battery, robbery and grand theft for the alleged attack on his teacher. The 6’1 student allegedly put his arm around the teacher, before she instructed him to stop. He then body slammed her, hitting her head on the ground, and choked her until she passed out. Before throwing her cell phone in the garbage and stealing her car, Nash, who weighs 200 pounds, raped her.
south dade senior high school
He was found five hours later driving her car nearby. Upon arrest, he confessed to the crimes.

The teachers union confirmed that Nash had attacked a teacher and said in a statement: ‘We are shocked and dismayed by the event reported at South Dade Senior High.

‘Our schools should be a place of safety and serenity, not only for students, but the adults who work there as well.”

Nash’s father, Victor Marshall Nash Sr., is a convicted sex offender who has been arrested in the past on child abuse charges.

The school has been in the headlines previously for inappropriate relationships between students and teachers. Earlier this year, married math teacher Bresnniel Jansen was arrested on two counts of sexual act with a familial child and one count of electronic transmission harmful to minors for his interactions with a 17 year old female student. In 2012, a physical education teacher was arrested for giving a joint to a 15 year old and having her perform oral sex on him.

Tyler Perry Reportedly Expecting A Baby Boy

Looks like Tyler Perry is going to be a dad! Reportedly last week, the TV mogul announced the news at his star packed 45th birthday party. Who is the lucky lady? According to Bossip, it is believed that Gelila Bekele, a 28 year-old Ethiopian model and his on and off again girlfriend, is the mother.

By coincidence, last year Perry told Steve Harvey that he hadn’t accomplished his goal of being a father yet and how he’d wish to become one by the age of 45.

“More than anything I think that it’s fatherhood. I know I would be a great father. I don’t want to work this hard. I don’t want to have all of this and not leave it to my children. I also know that as hard as I’m working, doing twenty hours per day, now is not the time. Right now I’m enjoying what I’m doing. I’m enjoying the work. I’m enjoying being a bachelor, so eventually I’ll get there.”

Screen-Shot-ge9

“Listen, I’m 43, so two more years. By 45 you know who the hell you are, right?” Perry told Harvey.”You’ve really settled in at 45 so I think two more years.

Speculations were confirmed through an Instagram picture with a friend stating that Gelila is in fact “7 months pregnant (with) baby boy!”

He got what he asked for. Congrats, Tyler Perry.

Cadillac Moves Headquarters to New York from Detroit

uptown cadillac

The General Motors brand Cadillac is moving its headquarters from Detroit to New York in early 2015. The shift comes as the brand seeks a fresh identity in the luxury market, as the car line looks to enter new countries and appeal to younger buyers.

Currently, most of Cadillac’s functions are part of the rest of GM, and its headquarters is at the Renaissance Center. Many Cadillac operations will stay at the GM Warren Tech Center. The new SoHo office will include space for events and loft offices in the second quarter of 2015.

The new headquarters will employ 120 workers, with thirty of them transfers from the Michigan office. The rest will be new hires.

This is not the first time one of Detroit’s Big Three has sought a new location to help jump-start a brand. In 1998, Ford Motor Co. announced it would move Lincoln and Mercury headquarters to trendy southern California. But the move was short-lived. In 2002, Ford moved Lincoln-Mercury headquarters back to Dearborn.

Ebola Cases Could Rise to 1.4 Million by January

The Ebola outbreak in Liberia and Sierra Leone is expected to get worse if there aren’t “additional interventions or changes in community behavior,” according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC report says the number of Ebola cases could increase to between 555,000 and 1.4 million by January.

The huge estimate is because the current cases are highly under-reported. To combat the deadly epidemic, the CDC suggests that at least 70 percent of those with the disease receive comprehensive treatment in medical facilities.

In a press conference Tuesday, CDC Director Tom Frieden warned that the model is based on data from August, and fails to consider President Obama‘s announcement that the U.S. will send troops and medical support.

Senior Director of the National Security Council Gayle Smith said the epidemic can end with a large international response. “The momentum must at least be maintained to ensure we are way out ahead of this,” Smith said. And added that the international help will need to “stay on this as long as it takes.”

Study: Stereotypes in Movies Negatively Impact Women

According to a study commissioned by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, stereotypes of women in media have a negative impact. The first-ever global study on female characters in popular films, released today, illustrates deep-seated discrimination and pervasive stereotyping of women and girls by the international film industry.

The investigation analyzed popular films in the most profitable markets, including United States, Russia, Japan, China, Brazil and India, amongst others.

The results showed a significant lack of females in family-friendly films.

  • Those who are in movies are often shown in sexual and non-professional roles.
  • Male characters disproportionately held more powerful occupations than their female counterparts.
  • Only 14% of business executives were female and just 10% of top-level politicians were women.
  • Only a quarter of the films examined had a girl or woman as a lead or co-lead driving the plot.

If movies showed more women in executive positions, or pursuing careers in science or math, “then it looks normal to people,” said organization Founder and veteran actress Geena Davis.

“We can start to feel like, ‘Hey, that makes perfect sense that women would be good at that,’” she adds. “So it can have an enormous impact.”

Here, Davis details more findings.

Dating Advice: The Five Signs You’ll Never Be His Girlfriend

$
0
0

UPTOWN_holding_handsDating sucks. OK, that was harsh opener. Dating is a mix of emotions — nervousness, excitement, joy, and awkwardness. When you like someone, your brain produces endorphins which trigger an actual physical and emotional response in your body. This is what causes the “butterflies in your stomach” feeling every time you are near your crush. Having someone to be near to, hold hands with, talk to, kiss, and be intimate with is amazing and something we all deserve to experience. Since dating can be so complicated, how do we know if it’s leading towards a relationship? Here is some dating advice in the form of the five signs that he (or she) are never, ever, like, ever going to take things to the next level. Ever.

UPTOWN_man_textingHe only texts you: Ugh, texting is the bane of my existence. Remember when a guy or girl liked you, and called you on the phone? I remember a boy calling me in the sixth grade, circa 1990, and I literally screamed because I was so excited. Then, there were the days of the pager when you would receive a numerical text, yes I wrote numerical for all you youngsters that grew up in the cell phone only era let me break it down. Pagers were dope. Pagers were fly and our generation came up with words you could read using numbers and certain number combinations meant different things. If a boy or girl texted you the number combo 143 it meant I love you. Guys called you because they had to! In high school a guy that had a crush on me wrote me letters weekly for an entire school year. These days you don’t even know what a guys handwriting looks like. All you get are texts and bathroom selfies with the toilet seat in the background.

If he sets up all your “dates” through texts, has not once picked up the phone to call you, and every text session escalates quickly into sexting, then you are not going to be his girlfriend. Now, I don’t think you have to have daily hour-long conversations on the phone to establish a relationship, but I do know that texting takes absolutely no effort, and picking up the phone, hearing someone’s voice, and establishing a relationship does.

UPTOWN_couple_making_bed

You have never spent more than one night at his place … ever: I understand that there are readers who are dating guys that do not have their own place, but for those of us who are not, let’s proceed. Entering a guy’s living space is not sacred. We all know we are not the only woman he has ever brought there and, in reality, may not be the last, depending on what the future holds, or at least your take away from this article, but I digress. Spending frequent nights at a guy’s house is a relationship-establishing move. By frequent, I mean that you have slept at his house, know where the glasses are, and have a toothbrush there.

If you slept with him, and you felt an automatic comfort in being with him, in his bed, and lounging at his place, then you feel safe, and feeling safe with someone is amazing. On the other hand, if you slept with him, fell asleep, got dropped off the next morning and received a, “Hey, what you doing?” text three days later — then he is not going to be your man. Move on.

UPTOWN_cuddlingYou constantly question whether he really likes you: When a man (notice I typed “man”) wants you, he will let you know. There will be no need for games. Men are natural hunters and will go after what they want. Honey, if he wants you, he will let you know in all the ways that he can. He will pick up the phone and ask you on that first date, if he hadn’t already done so in person. He will text you midday to see how you are doing. He will not leave you questioning your actions as well. How many of us have wondered if we should call or re-typed a text a million times hoping we won’t come across as desperate if we send it? You will feel completely secure in, well, how you are feeling, and you will not question your feelings because they will be reciprocated. If there is not reciprocity it’s not meant to be. Let it go.

UPTOWN_man_checking_time

He’s too busy for a relationship: A journalist was interviewing President Obama and asked how he maintained family time with his schedule. He proceeded to explain how he — when there are no dire emergencies of course — manages his time, and for the most part has dinner with his family, and date nights with the First Lady are also very important to him. Need I say, well, write more? The President of the United States of America can make time for his wife, but your boo can’t make time for you? There are 24 hours in a day, and yes we all lead our lives differently, and there are days when we are crazy busy, but that is no excuse. Here’s the thing; When I want to go to Fatburger and order a turkey burger with everything on it and chili-cheese fries, I figure out a way to make it happen, and I work three jobs. When we want to get our hair done we make it happen knowing it will kill many hours of our day. When we want to go on vacation, we work insane amounts of overtime to make the money needed, so that we can party it up in Jamaica next summer.

We make time for what is important. You, are important, and no matter what, deserve to be treated as such. If the man running the country can have a date night with his wife, then you can get a five-minute phone call just to say hi, if he doesn’t have time to spend an evening together, right? If he is not making any time for you, it’s not because school is tough, work is hectic, or his life is “crazy” right now — yeah, that means you Mr. Fireman…we both know your life was not “crazy” — it is because you are not important enough to him for him to make time for you. Walk away … Hell, moonwalk your way out of his “busy” life.

UPTOWN_man_mother

You have never met his family: This one hits close to home because it happened to me in my last relationship. Two years in and I had only spoke to his mother on the phone and through e-mails, as his family was from Michigan and I am in L.A. Not only were we together for two years, but lived together for one, and I had never had a face-to-face meeting with his parents. This is not normal unless his parents have passed or he literally does not know them. Meeting a guy’s parents, guardians, extended family, etc. is a sign that he wants to take your relationship to the next level, and that he is envisioning a future with you.

This can be tricky also depending on the relationship your partner may/may not have with his family. Let’s just say he and his parents are not on good terms and his childhood friend is his family. Have you met him? No. So, you haven’t met any of his family members or his closest friend? Right now he cannot picture you in his future frame of life. Right now, you are not “the one.” You may have to wait a while longer and see how this step pans out, which is OK if you are open to that. Don’t let two years go by without meeting his family because that is a huge red flag. Listen, don’t let one year go by without meeting his family. If this is your situation, sit down and have an honest conversation about your future, because the last thing you want is a never-worn wedding gown in your closet … like me. Talk it out, work it out, or walk away.

Apple’s iOS 8 Causes Apps To Crash More Frequently

ios-8-lockscreenAs Apple revels in its historically successful sales weekend for the iPhone 6, it is also grappling with complaints about phones that bend and its latest operating system. Users have complained that the new iOS 8 is causing their apps to crash more frequently.

According to a report by Crittercism Inc., iOS 8 is causing apps to suddenly shut down about 3.3 percent of the time, which is 67 percent more than last year’s operating system. Popular apps like Facebook and Dropbox seem to be mentioned in the most complaints. In the reviews on Apple’s App Store, one user wrote that Facebook “constantly freezes and crashes.”

This is coming after there were already complaints about the storage capacity needed to download the iOS 8 software update. Many people had to delete photos, videos, and apps to make room for iOS 8.

Crittercism Inc. claims that users with older iPhones are experiencing the most trouble. Its COO, Andrew Levy, said the new system has over 4,000 new functions and changes, which has left developers struggling to catch up and adapt.

However, as always, Apple will continue to develop fixes for bugs in the weeks and months ahead.

A common urban legend holds that Apple’s software updates, often pushed out at the same time as new phones are released, contain bugs that cripple older equipment and drive people to upgrade.

Police Throw Pregnant Woman to the Ground Belly-First [VIDEO]

The NYPD is under fire again for a recent instance of police brutality against a civilian. Yet, another incident has surfaced after a video captures a pregnant mother of four being thrown to the grown by NYPD after coming to her son’s defense this Saturday.

Sandra Amezquita, 44, her husband, Ronel Lemos heard the cries of their 17-year-old son who was being beaten and arrested by the NYPD. Their son, Jhojan Lemos, was being arrested for criminal possession of a knife. He was spotted carrying a pocket-knife on his belt.

The mother intervened in the arrest, but risked her and her unborn’s child safety by doing so. She was violently thrown to the grown, belly-down in Sunset Park, Brooklyn around 2am. The mother suffered vaginal bleeding and currently has bruises on her stomach and arms. She is five months pregnant.

Sanda Amezquita

The father of her child, and husband, told the Daily News that “The first thing I thought was they killed my baby and they’re going to kill my wife.” In addition to the mother’s injuries, the teenage boy suffered many bruises to the face in his altercation with the police. It was reported that he was resisting arrest, and he was charged with striking an officer.

This is the second incident involving police brutality in a week for the NYPD. Last week, an officer was caught on camera kicking a street vendor in the same location.

Michael Brown’s Memorial Burned Down, Triggers Protests

Unrest continues in Ferguson, Missouri, more than a month after the killing of Michael Brown. A memorial to the unarmed teenager who was shot dead by Darren Wilson was destroyed in a suspicious fire Tuesday morning. This resulted in rising tensions among protesters.

Two protesters were arrested on Tuesday night. Later that night, Ferguson police responded to reports of a break-in at a beauty supply store, Beauty Town, located on West Florissant Ave. Nearby stores boarded up their windows, fearing looters would destroy property.

Ferguson Memorial Mike Brown

Protesters advised police that they were on the streets in response to the memorial burning earlier Tuesday morning. It was burned down around 6:45 am on Canfield Drive, the street where Brown died. Bystanders reported smelling gasoline at the scene.

Police believe the fire was intentional, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The memorial has since been rebuilt, but the city and normalcy has a long way to go.

Oxygen Greenlights Preachers of Detroit, The Investment Club and more

It looks as though Oxygen is feeling the pressure to rebrand. The network has greenlit five new series as part of its “Very Real” initiative to target the new age woman. The new lineup includes Preachers of Detroit, (a Preachers of L.A spinoff), plus The Investment Club, The Prancing Elite Project, The Wilkersons and Finding My Father.

Preachers of Detroit debuts Winter 2015 and highlights the lives at church and at home of seven men of the cloth. The original L.A. series was a huge success for the network, and there are plans to create New York, Atlanta and Dallas editions.

The Wilkersons, another faith-based show, shadows Rich Wilkerson–the preacher who married Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. E! News co-hosts Guliana Rancic and Jason Kennedy pair together again to executive produce the unscripted series. Rancic promises that this reality show will be much different than others. “This isn’t a show, it’s a movement,” she says.

The Investment Club sounds similar to ABC’s Shark Tank, as entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas to self-made moguls, a.k.a The Investment Club, in hopes that one invests big bucks into their venture.

What’s a reality lineup without a dance number, right? The Prancing Elite Project follows the moves (and drama) on and off the dance floor of five best friends who make up Mobile, Alabama’s all-male competitive dance group, The Prancing Elites.

Finding My Father tugs at the heart as each episode travels on a journey with guests in search of their absent fathers. The searching men and women will pair with a private investigator and must eventually decide if they just want closure or a new beginning with their fathers.

VP of Original programming and Development Rod Aissa said of the network’s rebrand, “Oxygen is committed to delivering more authentic originals geared to young, multicultural women.”

What do you think about Oxygen’s increase of reality TV to cater to the young, modern woman? Will you be tuning in?

Patti LaBelle Sued by Ex-West Point Cadet for Brain Injury

Patti LaBelle Joins The Cast Of "After Midnight" As A Special Guest Star

R&B diva Patti LaBelle was accused of ordering her entourage to assault an ex-West Point cadet outside Bush Intercontinental Airport in March 2011. The incident was presented in court on Tuesday, September 16, and both parties had a different recollection of the events.

The former cadet, Richard King, made claims that as he waited for family to pick him up outside of the airport terminal, LaBelle’s bodyguard, Efrem Holmes; son and manager, Zuri Edwards; and hairdresser, Norma Harris attacked him and caused him to hit his head on a concrete pillar. King faults LaBelle’s ambush for a severe brain injury, which lead him to withdraw from West Point.

Patti LaBelle’s lawyer, Geoffrey Bracken, had a very different take on the story. Bracken told jurors that King shouted racial slurs at the singer and even tried to open her vehicle door. When LaBelle’s crew demanded several times for King to stop, he attacked her son. Bracken brought a large bottle of Jack Daniels to show jurors how much King had been drinking at the time of the assault. The lawyer also informed jurors that King’s discontinuation at West Point was not due to a head injury, but because of his history of poor academic performance.

The case came to a close yesterday and the jury awarded no damages to the plaintiff. King’s lawyer says he was left confused by the jury’s decision, while Patti and her bodyguard were already in flight to LA before the verdict was announced.

The Patti we know and love may be a diva, but she’s not a violent one.

2014 MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivals

Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa splitting up? This all comes as a huge surprise because the newly wedded couple seems all smiles on Instagram. Amber is filing for divorce after just one year and she’s going for full custody of their adorable baby boy, Sebastian.

Reportedly she and Wiz called it quits on Monday due to irreconcilable differences. Cheating rumors are circulating but no valid sources have confirmed – or denied them. A prenup is in place and Amber is seemingly okay with the terms. The agreement does, however, grant her spousal support.

Just two weeks ago, Rose posted this beautiful wedding pic of her and Wiz to Instagram. The caption read: Happy 27th Birthday @mistercap I’ll love you forever…. Hope this year is an amazing one for u sweetheart [heart emoji]

Fingers crossed that it’s all a bunch of lies and propaganda. Neither Wiz or Amber have released any statements (or subtweets) on the divorce, so as of now it’s still all hearsay.

Soda Makers Promise To Reduce Calorie Consumption

$

Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Dr. Pepper said they will work to reduce the amount of calories Americans get from beverages by 20 percent within 10 years, at the Clinton Global Initiative on Sept. 23. The announcement comes as the soda makers face pressure over their contribution to obesity rates.

Soda makers have already made changes in response to the general attitude shift regarding sodas. Coca-Cola Co. and Pepsi Co. have been pushing smaller cans and bottles, which tend to be more profitable now. They market the change as a means of portion control. Both companies have also introduced flavored versions of their bottled waters, Dasani and Aquafina.

Susan Neely, president of the American Beverage Association, says they will focus their efforts on areas that are traditionally less interested in low-calorie drinks. Former President Bill Clinton mentioned onstage at the event that drinks can make up a greater share of the daily caloric intake for lower income people.

The new initiative can also serve to fix the issue of political opposition to beverage companies. The American Beverage Association has spent millions of dollars campaigning against taxes and other measures intended to lower the consumption of sugary drinks. Instead, they have tried to promote the need for awareness of other beverage options and push a healthy balance between caloric intake and exercise. To that end, they have a new ad campaign targeted at teens called “Mixify,” which should start to air nationally on TV this week.

Soon, there is expected to be a federal regulation that would require a clearly marked calorie count on vending machines and other places. However, Neely said soda makers will go a step further and give some kind of additional encouragement to make a healthy choice.

Last year, I read an article about “Scandal” that made me sit down and rethink everything I thought I knew about women and relationships. It wasn’t about the show, the plot, nor Shonda Rhimes‘ writing ability, it was about Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn (President Fitzgerald Grant) and the writer’s belief that women are far more superficial than men. After “Scandal” fans, and new Fitz admirers, learned that Goldwyn’s wife was Jane Musky, people wondered aloud how in the hell could “fine-ass Fitz” wake up beside that every morning? Women went in on her lack of fashion-forwardness, her body build, and even her age, all to attempt to prove how unworthy Goldwyn’s wife of 30 years was, simply based on her physical features. The writer absolutely crushed those women, labeling them ignorant, superficial, and clueless. Now that Omari Hardwick and his wife Jennifer Pfautch are in the same situation, this point definitely bears repeating.

Omari Hardwick’s wife has show us what being “ugly” truly is, and it’s not her. It’s the idiots who go out of their way to shit on a woman who is guilty of doing nothing more than existing as a celebrity’s wife and being the mother of their child.

I refuse to sugarcoat this article with exculpatory bullshit like “maybe people aren’t used to interracial relationships yet” or “maybe we need to be more sensitive to what different people find attractive.” To HELL with that. We are all grown-ass adults who know better. The only reason we decided to knock his wife down a peg is because most of us are hypocritical, ignorant, bullying pieces of shit. We love to stand on sanctimonious grounds whenever a celebrity does wrong, but we feel we should be completely free to say whatever harmful, hurtful garbage that comes out of our mouths. This is Hardwick’s wife and the mother to his kids. Our collective inability to show her the basic, human respect is not simple trolling or joking, but instead is rooted in jealousy, ignorance, and superficiality.

What’s so disappointing about this is the fact that women have commandeered most of the negative conversation about Pfautch. Isn’t it cute how the same women who promote themselves as progressive feminists standing against body-shaming and judging women by traditional beauty standards have no problem with identifying another woman as “ugly” and join the peanut gallery to throw barbs at her? What part of the game is that? We have no reports of Pfautch being a terrible wife or mother, so what in the hell has she done to draw ire? Not being “beautiful” enough? You mean to tell me the same women who took issue with FOX’s superficial decision to replace the talented Pam Oliver with the younger Erin Andrews, are now touting the same shallow shit they claimed to despise? That’s truly pathetic.

The reason this touches such a serious nerve with me is because I really hate the concept of diminishing the woman a man chooses to love and marry. It is no easy decision for any man to decide that he loves a woman so much, he will be spending the rest of his life with her. It’s a decision that requires a lot of thought, but more importantly, it requires a lot of love. A love that is so deep and selfless that it truly cannot be comprehended by anyone outside of their union. See, when Hardwick, Goldwyn, or any other man who is deeply in love with the woman of his dreams was struggling, their love was there for them. When jobs weren’t available, money was low, and it felt like the world was collapsing around them, their love was there. The woman who birthed their child, made them a better man, and made them experience a love they never thought was possible. A woman who is above being judged on her breasts, her abs, or the contours of her face. It’s just a shame more women don’t understand that ugliness is less about how much makeup they wear, and more about how full of SHIT you are on the inside. So, by that measure, the comments about Omari Hardwick’s wife has show us what ugly really is — and it’s not her.

To Be Young, Black & Republican

Chelsi Henry has lived a life that many would aspire to. As the daughter of a 16-year-old single mother, Henry bucked statistics by completing college and then law school, and quickly moved on to work as a senior state policy advisor in Florida. She recently passed the state bar and has also held elective office.

But what sets Henry, 26, apart from most modern black women is this: she’s a Republican—and proud of it. “My alignment with the Republican Party closely reflects my personal values,” Henry explains. BET listed her as one of 10 Black Republicans to Watch; she’s one of conservative webzine Red Alert Politics’ “30 Under 30”; and she also snagged a slot on the coveted Republican National Committee’s Rising Star list.

In terms of pure numbers, black registered Republicans like Henry are still statistical anomalies. But, in recent years, what they’re not accruing in terms of elected seats they’ve managed to accumulate through raw visibility. Whether they’re seeding student chapters at Historically Black Colleges and Universities or holding bizarre forums in barbershops, black Republicans are proudly letting their GOP flag wave.

Former Republican strategist and one-time Congressional primary candidate Lenny McAllister calls it a surge. To McAllister, the sudden and rather conspicuous rise in black Republicanism is evident, “in all aspects of politics: political punditry, grassroots activism, party involvement. From running for elected offices to showing up in all forms of media,” he argues.

In his optimism, McAllister points to a black party chair, six vice-chairs of statewide GOP organizations, and numerous black Republican activists and candidates. Yet few black Republicans are getting elected, particularly on the highly visible statewide and federal levels.

Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), for example, might be pulled out of the Republican toy box as one shining example of “Big Tent” politics (a term Republicans have over-utilized since the 1990s), but he’s only one out of three sitting African Americans in the U.S. Senate.

In her second try at it, Mia Love would be the only black Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as the first African American to represent the state of Utah. In Illinois, former Miss America Erika Harold came close to unseating incumbent Rep. Rodney Davis (RIL) in a first-try primary challenge, but couldn’t close a 13-point gap.

In Oklahoma and Texas, tea party favorites T.W. Shannon and agitator Katrina Pierson suffered embarrassing defeats against well-heeled incumbents; Shannon, the state’s House speaker who at one point showed major promise in polls, had even enjoyed public support from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and former GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

“We’re looking for great candidates everywhere,” offers Jill Bader, communications director for the Republican State Leadership Committee. While RSLC isn’t part of the RNC, Bader is eager to rattle off the 130 diverse and 120 woman hopefuls during the 2014 election cycle. “We’re starting to see a groundswell of support from that orbit of candidates.”

Does that mean there is a new movement or rebirth of black Republicanism taking place? Something could be bubbling, but what it means over the long term is unclear. “I think a black partisan realignment is still a long ways off , but the success of these black Republicans in Republican jurisdictions does present a path to elective office in places where Democrats—regardless of their color—have a hard time getting elected,” Emory University political scientist Andra Gillespie explains.

Talk of “realignment” came up among political game theorists sorting through the bizarre earthquake that took place in Mississippi during the caustic June Republican primary for U.S. Senate. In that race, highly respected old boy Republican Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) resorted to soliciting black Democratic voters eligible to participate in the state’s open primary. Fending off a furious challenge from tea party state senator Chris McDaniel, that stunt helped Cochran win by two percentage points.

But should Democrats be worried about that kind of shift in future elections? It’s fiction to think African American voters will suddenly bolt Republican with 95 percent consistently voting Democrat in presidential elections. But Gallup, Pew and others show the number of black independent, non-partisan voters (that is, those who have open minds) steadily rising. Twenty nine percent of independent voters are black.

Plus, President Obama won’t be on the ballot in 2016. “Democrats should be very worried about that,” says Rev. Al Sharpton. “Without Obama, black people will not turn out [to the polls] the same way as before.”

As a result, the GOP appears to be making a concerted play here. It’s no accident that Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), a likely hopeful for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, is stumbling into black colleges and churches. With a growing movement of jaded millennials and libertarians, Republicans seek to corner the younger voter market. RSLC’s Bader notes that, “most of our [diverse and women] candidates are usually younger because it’s their first start in politics.”

Many observers also point to a peculiar trend: younger, more independent-minded African American activists or politicos are growing disgruntled following failed attempts to grow in the Democratic Party. They tend to consider non-partisan politics, the GOP and even the Tea Party. This was the case in 2010 when two prominent young black Democrats from Georgia, Hall County Commissioner Ashley Bell and former state executive committee member Andre Walker, abruptly switched parties.

“I was never engaged or involved in politics prior to the Tea Party,” said Pierson during an interview for the documentary Black Tea: The New Civil Right. “One of the things that drew me to political action was simply that the Tea Party was there. There was really no political home for someone new to politics who didn’t want to engage in any of the partisanism that was happening.”

After unsuccessful tries at dominating the usual black and very Democratic politics, there are some who see an opening for career enrichment and fewer crabs in the barrel with GOP politics. One up-and-coming elected official (who did not want his or her name used) admitted to being approached by Republican Party officials—and, at one point, considering the switch as a path to higher office. Many sense that the Democratic Party is saturated with other African Americans doing the same thing, and there’s also the perception that older or more senior black party leaders were forcing younger advocates to stand in line and “wait their turn.”

For the committed partisans, though, it’s not about that. “My life is a testimony of conservatism,” says Henry. “These are the core values I’m connected to.”

Henry’s decision was based partly on her humble beginnings, and partly an attraction to GOP ideals such as school choice and reduced taxes. “I’m very passionate about lowering taxes, for example, because young professionals like myself need to succeed. Government should stop punishing those who make more money and who want to give. Local communities and individuals know what’s best for them.”

uptown micahel steele

“I do see something happening with younger African American voters,” observes former RNC Chair and former Maryland Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele as he recalls moments he’s talked with black students at HBCUs and elsewhere. “It becomes an intriguing conversation and it becomes obvious that they weren’t so decidedly in lock-step with Democrats as once thought.”

“The conversation ends up at ‘so how does this work best for me?’ This is why the Mississippi Senate race could be a leveraging point for African Americans. Why can’t they then do it in another race?”

It seems schizophrenic: On one hand, Republican lawmakers on the state level push voter suppression and Voter ID laws, and on the other, the national GOP creates a new black outreach machine on a dreamy quest for black votes. Steele, whose bitter clashes with current RNC Chair Reince Priebus are famous, acknowledges that. “The GOP needs to address fundamentals with this group on common sense priorities,” Steele says, emphasizing the critical trust factor. “They must address hard questions: ‘Why would you appear to support a policy that appears to limit access to the ballot box?’”

Despite that, Priebus believes he’s making inroads. “We want to have an open, honest dialogue about the Republican Party and garner feedback from real people,” says Priebus. “It’s important for us to immerse ourselves and our message of opportunity in the community.” In the meantime, Gillespie wonders if black Republican candidates can “clear the field”—eliminating as much competition as possible through campaigning, attrition, fundraising and media to ultimately become the winning nominee for their party in the general election. To date, it’s been a hard sell, particularly in majority Republican districts where the population is mostly white. “The key is putting oneself in position to actually clear a political field,” says Gillespie.

baby drowns baptism

A Decatur, Alabama mother is grieving the loss of her two year old son after he drowned in a church’s baptism tank last week.

According to the report, Brayden King was at the Pentecostal House of Prayer with his mother and 13-year-old sister as the women of the church prepared for a missionary prayer meeting. The boy’s mother had the role of narrator in a skit for the prayer meeting, so she left the boy in the care of his sister. The teen lost track of the toddler, but found him moments later unresponsive in 33 inches of water.

“I’ve been preaching 30 years, this is the first time in my ministry I’ve been speechless,” said the pastor of the Pentecostal House of Prayer.

“I know (God) is too wise to make mistakes, but in my humanity, I can’t lie. I’ve had to get on my knees.” He plans to do baptisms at another church for the time being, adds the Christian Post. “I don’t know how long it will take to heal.”

Brayden’s mother, who also has two daughters, prayed for a son after years of trying. Brayden was deemed a ‘prayer baby.’
