A debate in Florida’s House of Representatives over a Republican-sponsored ban on race- and sex-selective abortions became extremely heated Thursday, causing several black women lawmakers to walk out in protest.

House Bill 845, sponsored by Rep. Charles Van Zant (R-Keystone Heights), would make it a third-degree felony in Florida to perform an abortion based on the race or gender of the fetus. In his closing statements on Thursday, Van Zant accused Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers of intentionally targeting black people. “The fact is, 80 percent of abortion clinics nationwide are located in minority neighborhoods where 43 percent of all black babies are aborted,” Van Zant said, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

“In America alone, without the Nazi Holocaust, without the Ku Klux Klan, Planned Parenthood and other abortionists have reduced our black population by more than 25 percent since 1973,” he said. “This is called discriminatory targeting.”

Several black lawmakers became insulted during the debate, and at least five women walked out. Rep. Barbara Watson (D-Miami), one of the members who left, told HuffPost in a phone interview that she felt as if Van Zant was manipulating information to reflect his personal beliefs about abortion.

A doctor for Maya Angelou says the famed author and poet is recovering at her North Carolina home following a brief hospitalization, reports The Associated Press.

In a letter issued Tuesday, Dr. Jeff Williamson of the Wake Forest School of Medicine said he ordered the 85-year-old to forgo any travel for the next three to four weeks. The doctor’s order includes Angelou’s scheduled appearance at Butler University on Thursday (April 25).

“Angelou was hospitalized briefly this week for an undisclosed ailment,” Butler spokesman Marc Allan said in an email. “She has been discharged and is recovering at home in North Carolina, but her medical team mandated that she forego any traveling for the next 3-4 weeks.”

Angelou was to address attendees at the Celebration of Diversity Distinguished Lecture Series. Those who purchased a ticket through Ticketmaster will automatically receive a refund.

Over the span of her career, Angelou has been celebrated for her critically acclaimed work, including 1969′s autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

Linda Fondren, a Vicksburg, Mississippi mayoral candidate recently opened up about her past as a “working girl.” In the past Fondren had been accused of being part owner of Nevada brothel Sagebrush Ranch, but in a recent interview with WLBT, she came clean about her past and set the record straight.

“I was a working girl in a legal brothel over thirty years ago. It’s true, my husband was my client. My husband and I have been married for twenty-eight years,” Fondren explained.

She also admits that she and her husband did own the ranch, but they sold it back in the early 90′s. Fondren went on to say that she knew her past as a “working girl” would eventually be exposed, she just didn’t think it would receive as much attention as it has and that she’d avoided conversations about it in the past because she didn’t want to embarrass her family.

“I knew that it would surface because it was around, I just didn’t think it would be me sitting here having an interview with you today.”

“Am I proud of what I did? No. Do I have regrets? No. I am who I am. This is my story. It is what makes me who I am.”

Talk about a hell date…

A 21-year-old Florida woman was left single and without a vehicle after being held up by gunpoint while on a casual outing with an acquaintance.

Nimeha Milien says she agreed to go on a first date with Donald Bernard McGee Jr., 19, after exchanging text messages Friday evening. While they had never met in person, Milien picked up McGee and drove to Ocean Inlet Park in Palm Beach Country where they spent the next few hours chatting.

“We sat there. We spoke. Nothing wrong happened,” she told WPBF. “It was like normal, all conversation.”

The seemingly uneventful date ended in a Wendy’s parking lot where Milien thought her date was getting picked up by his brother. Instead, McGee pulled out a gun, demanded her to get out of the car and sped off. Milien ran to a nearby gas station for help.

Police eventually caught up with the culprit after an eight-mile chase down I-95. McGee told authorities that it was Milien who had carjacked him, but could not explain why he didn’t stop on the highway or the .380-caliber Kel Tec handgun found in the car’s center console.

He was arrested Friday and booked into the Palm Beach County jail on Saturday. He faces charges of carjacking with a firearm, marijuana possession, fleeing police, driving without a valid license and robbery with a firearm.

McGee is being held on $15,000 bail.

I recall watching Whitney Houston’s funeral on CNN and cringing as anchor Don Lemon described and contextualized every aspect of her homegoing service. The icon’s funeral was familiar for many black Americans. Outside of the celebrity presence, it didn’t differ much from other funerals I’ve attended at Baptist churches. But Houston’s homegoing was a unique experience for the general American public as evidenced by Lemon’s commentary.

Filmmaker Christine Turner dissected African-American funeral traditions in her debut feature documentary “Homegoings.” The film “explores the African-American funeral home, a 150 year-old institution that is now vanishing” according to a press release. It is “told through the eyes of a Harlem funeral director, Isaiah Owens, and the families he serves.”

Turner was inspired to create the film after the death of two close relatives with different cultural traditions.

“When I was 13, both of my grandmothers passed away within two weeks of one another,” she said. “My mom’s mother, who was Chinese-American, happened to be Methodist and was cremated, which was very atypical for traditional Chinese funerals. My father’s mother, who was African-American and Catholic, had an open-casket funeral—the first I had ever attended, leaving an indelible impression on me.”

“The first thing that popped in my head when I was asked to be a part of PEOPLE’s ‘No Make Up’ [photo shoot] was, ‘Oh my God! Oh my God, what’s going to happen? Oh my God, I’m honored” but I’m very happy,” Rowland said. “I feel very comfortable in my skin and very comfortable to share it with you guys.”

Four young victims of the deadly 1963 Birmingham church bombing are inching closer to receiving the Congressional Gold Medal after a unanimous vote on Wednesday (April 24).

The House voted 420-0 to pass a bill that would posthumously award the highest expression of national appreciation to Addie Mae Collins (14), Carole Robertson (14), Cynthia Wesley (14) and Denise McNair (13). The young teens were killed in the blast at 16th Street Baptist Church by a bomb planted by white supremacists.

The bill will now be considered by the Senate.

“It’s really a long overdue recognition,” Alabama Rep. Terri Sewell (D) told MSNBC. She and Spencer Bachus (R) represent Birmingham and are looking to honor the legacy of the victims.

“We thought it was very important and befitting that we acknowledge and honor the lives of [the girls]…This particular medal, I think, while it can’t bring back the lives of those that were lost, it is an effort on our part to really acknowledge nationally the sacrifices that these families have made.”

The sisters of McNair and Robertson sat in the House gallery to watch the vote. But, as previously reported, other relatives of the victims are not as thrilled.

Sarah Collins Rudolph, Collins’ sister and a survivor of the bombing, is seeking millions in compensation and says she would not accept the medal. Wesley’s brother Fate Morris is also not interested in accepting the honor on behalf of his sister and would like to be compensated as well.

Once the bill is approved by the Senate and signed by President Obama, the girls could receive the award by Sept. 15– exactly 50 years after the tragedy.

Production on an upcoming football-centered film will kick off this week as the real-life 2013 NFL Draft begins Thursday at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Sean “Diddy” Combs, Terry Crews, Chi McBride, David Ramsey and league star Arian Foster have all reportedly joined the cast of Draft Day, also starring Chadwick Boseman and Kevin Costner.

According to Shadow & Act, Costner will take on the role of an NFL team’s general manager who is forced to make some tough professional and personal decisions in the 24-hour period of the draft. Boseman is set to play a college linebacker with dreams of going pro.

The sports drama, directed by Ivan Reitman, will also star Jennifer Garner, Ellen Burstyn, Denis Leary and Frank Langella.

After filming wraps in NYC this weekend, production will head to Cleveland, Ohio.

In a plot to keep daughters Malia and Sasha from getting inked, the POTUS explained, “What we’ve said to the girls is, ‘If you guys ever decided you’re going to get a tattoo, then mommy and me will get the exact same tattoo in the same place. And we’ll go on YouTube and show it off as a family tattoo.”

He continued, “Our thinking is that might dissuade them from thinking that somehow that’s a good way to rebel.”

Police arrested three men and sought a fourth Tuesday after two Virginia State University freshmen were swept away while trying to cross a swift, rain-swollen river as part of an initiation rite.

The body of one freshman, identified as Marvell Edmonson, 19, of Portsmouth, was recovered Monday. The search continued Tuesday for the second, Jauwan M. Holmes, 19, of Newport News.

The four suspects are connected to an organization known as “Men of Honor” that conducted an initiation Saturday that required seven male VSU students to walk through the rushing rapids of the Appomattox River, police said. While some were pulled to safety, two were swept away.

Chesterfield County police identified the three in custody as James A. Mackey Sr., 35, of suburban Richmond; Eriq K. Benson, 19, of Quinton; and Cory D. Baytop, 26, of Newport News. Each has been charged with five counts of hazing. Police were seeking Charles E. Zollicoffer II, 29. An address was not provided.

Benson and Baytop are VSU students. Benson’s attorney did not immediately return a telephone message. It was not clear if the other suspects had attorneys.

When the invite to check out the all-new 2013 Avalon came through, the answer was an automatic “yes.” The 2011 Avalon had already left a favorable impression so an improvement on that was definitely an event.

Shortly after arriving at the Cincinnati airport, I was greeted by “Bond-ish” girls who escorted me to an awaiting Avalon in Moulin Rouge Mica. Oblivious to the freezing outdoor temps, I nestled into the backseat, unwrapped an iPad Mini containing the weekend’s mission – and the adventure began.

With the mission laid out and the players identified, I relaxed in my artsy room at the new 21c Museum Hotel Cincinnati because the “museum” is no misnomer. Even the elevator is an art installation. The entire hotel is a cool, hip gallery, which fit in perfectly with the Toyota Avalon “Only the Name Remains” campaign.

Later on, our intimate group of hand-picked journalists were whisked off to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center for an exclusive Avalon dinner and reveal. Inside, there was a “pimped-out” one courtesy of DUB, the West Coast powerhouse that was largely built on making an already great ride even better.

Upstairs, the Avalon was feted for the class act it is. A live band peeled through some classic R&B joints, cocktails flowed, hors d’oeuvre were non-stop and the company was unbelievable, as Toyota top-brass circulated with the journalists.

Just before dinner was served, we stepped onto the balcony and, the Avalon below went into action, racing from its stationary spot at a speed attributed more to cars more famous than it. Somehow the action made it upstairs to us, with the characters engaged in a fight of sorts. The mission was indeed in full effect and, luckily, the good guys were winning, thanks to the Avalon.

Dinner, needless to say, was scrumptious. Toyota’s top personnel charmed us with engaging conversation over the tasty meal. Afterwards, we did a mini-tour of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and stood in The Slave Pen, a structure built in the early 1800s used during the domestic slave trade to hold the enslaved before auction.

The next day was a bright and early one as we headed to Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. or TMMK in Georgetown, Kentucky. Opened in 1988, it is Toyota’s first wholly owned manufacturing facility in the U.S. and, today, its largest outside of Japan. About 2000 vehicles are built there a day and it is headed by Wil James, one of our hosts.

Because Mr. James was our host, we got a tour. Now I’m no expert on manufacturing but this plant was way impressive. Robots and people worked in harmony to create Toyota magic. It was truly something to see and I am not exaggerating. Of course Mr. James was very modest about all of this when he addressed us.

But as “jefe” as Mr. James is, Idris Elba was the man of the hour. Okay it would have been even better if Mr. Elba was there but the Avalon spot with him getting his Bond on was attention-grabbing. The best part was the off-the-cuff video of him just kicking it around the commercial set. Burrell Chief Creative Officer Lewis Williams spoke about the spots his agency created and that was much appreciated. I’m just thankful we no longer have to keep this cat in the bag.

Now we did get to take the Avalon for a spin. Of course it looked great but it drove even better. Since it was cold in Kentucky, those seat warmers came in handy. Thankfully this was just a sneak peek and, later on, we will be getting a more personal, in-depth look at the Avalon so stay tuned.

The day ended with an “Art of Entertaining” event with special guest Bilal. There we chatted more with Rob McConnell, one of Toyota’s engineers for the Avalon, which is fitting since he is just as hip as it is! Imagine Bilal only performing for you and your friends and you get how the new Avalon does it.

By leaving time the next day, there was no denying that the all new Toyota Avalon had made some fans. Only the Name Remains but the bar keeps getting higher.

The Boston Marathon bombing suspects had planned to blow up their remaining explosives in New York’s Times Square, New York officials said Thursday.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Dzhokhar Tsarnaev told interrogators from his hospital bed that he and his older brother had decided spontaneously Thursday night to drive to New York and detonate their remaining explosives – a pressure-cooker bomb like the ones that blew up at the marathon, plus five pipe bombs.

The plan fell apart after the Tsarnaev brothers were intercepted by police in a stolen car and got into a fierce gun battle that left Tamerlan Tsarnaev dead, Kelly said.

Dzhokhar, 19, is charged with carrying out the Boston Marathon bombing that killed three people and wounded more than 260, and he could get the death penalty.

She teams up with the wife, played by Leslie Mann, to seek revenge on the lying cheater (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). Minaj will take on the role of Diaz’s “opinionated assistant at a law firm” who’s on her third marriage.
