A 6-month-old girl died this morning, a day after she and her father were shot several times outside a home in the South Side’s Woodlawn neighborhood, officials said.

Jonylah Watkins had undergone hours of surgery at Comer Children’s Hospital after she was shot early Monday afternoon. “This morning, the baby passed away,” said the Rev. Corey Brooks, a spokesman for the family, “We have another tragedy in the city of Chicago.”

The baby was pronounced dead at 6 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

The girl’s father, Jonathan Watkins, 29, was shot in his left side and right buttock and sustained a graze wound to the face, police said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, fire officials said.

Police said a gunman emerged from a gangway in the 6500 block of South Maryland Avenue shortly before 1 p.m. and opened fire. Watkins was shot as he stood by the minivan’s open front passenger door changing his daughter’s diaper as she lay on the seat, police said.

The gunman fled to a nearby parking lot and jumped into a blue conversion van, which sped north through an alley, police said. Police were scouring the area for surveillance footage.

Other family members said the girl’s 20-year-old mother was at work at a McDonald’s when the shooting happened. She had been shot in the leg last spring while pregnant with Jonylah, they said.

Jones, who turns 80 on Thursday (March 14), will once again team up with The Cider House Rules star to celebrate their shared birthdays with a A-list event. According to The Hollywood Reporter, appearances will include Bono, Carlos Santana, Chaka Khan, Chris Tucker, Herbie Hancock, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks, Scarlett Johansson, Terrence Howard, Patti Austin, Snoop Dogg, Stevie Wonder, Whoopi Goldberg, will.i.am and Barbra Streisand.

“There are no two greater living icons with a larger influence on the worlds of music and pop culture than Quincy Jones and Sir Michael Caine,” said Cuban, chairman and founder of AXS TV. “Joining the celebration of their 80th birthdays with the Power of Love Gala as the broadcast partner underscores AXS TV’s commitment to being the foremost live destination on television for fans of music and pop-culture events.”

The event, which will broadcast April 13 from MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, will benefit Keep Memory Alive in support of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health.

An 8-year-old South African boy just tied the knot with a 61-year-old woman and mother of five to make his ancestors proud, reports RadarOnline.com.

Sanele Masilea said it was his deceased grandfather’s wish for him to be married. His family then arranged for him to jump the broom with Helen Shabangu because he loves her.

“Sanele is named after his grandfather, who was never had a white wedding before he died so asked Sanele to get married,” his mother, Patience Masilela said. “He chose Helen because he loves her.”

A candlelight vigil held in remembrance of 16-year-old Kimani Gray who was fatally shot late Saturday night (March 9) by police turned violent Monday evening, according to media reports. Frustrated attendees reportedly threw bottles at cops, trashed a local drug store and attacked a store clerk, manager and security guard.

The vigil started around 7 p.m. in Brooklyn’s East Flatbush neighborhood where Gray was killed over the weekend. By 8:30 p.m., an NYPD source said “a large, disorderly group [began] throwing bottles at police.” While riot police were among the crowd trying to defuse the situation, protestors quickly moved the disturbance to a nearby Rite Aid where individuals began pulling items off the shelves and attacking store employees.

Merchandise was allegedly stolen from the store and cash was taken from the register. The Huffington Post reports one man who had been assaulted and was bleeding from the head was rushed to a local hospital in unknown condition.

Surrounding shops within the neighborhood were also damaged, as well as the windows of a city bus.

One person was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

On Saturday, a pair of plainclothes officers were patrolling the area in an unmarked car when they came upon a group of men just before 11:30 p.m, including Gray. When the teen separated from the group, officers said Gray adjusted his waistband in a “suspicious manner,” prompting them to get out of the car and question him.

The cops said they fired shots at Gray when he allegedly turned and pointed a .38-caliber Rohm revolver, although one witness claimed they never heard a warning being given. He was later pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital Center.

Both officers have been placed on administrative duty.

It’s hard to decide which is worse: answering to the law or answering to your parents?

Two Philadelphia teenagers found themselves paying the ultimate price for the robbery of a 9-year-old girl last Friday (March 8) in the city’s East Germantown neighborhood. After watching the young child pay for her items at a local market, the 13- and 14-year-old boys approached the girl while leaving the store, stole her wallet and fled the scene.

Their spoils? $13.

According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, police collected the security-camera footage and released it to various news and social media outlets. After bringing in hundreds of views, the mother of one teen boy turned her son in around 11:30 p.m. that night. The second boy’s parents called to turn in their son about an hour later.

Both teens, unidentified minors, were questioned and charged with robbery and related offenses. They were later sent home to their parents, where we believe the real punishment began.

With few tips to work from, Chicago detectives are continuing to piece together the murder of 6-month-old Jonylah Watkins who was shot five times Monday on the city’s South Side. The infant was killed while having her diaper changed by her father Jonathan Watkins, the intended target.

The 29-year-old man was still hospitalized Wednesday morning after being shot in his left side, right buttock and sustaining a graze wound to the face. Both father and daughter were hit when an unidentified man walked up to Watkins’ minivan and opened fire.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports Watkins is cooperating with police from his hospital bed, but has no idea who shot him. An $11,000 reward is being offered in the case.

According to ABC 7 Chicago, the family’s spokesman Reverend Corey Brooks said injured Bulls star Derrick Rose has offered to pay for Jonylah’s funeral.

“These persons who committed this horrible crime, we guarantee you they will be brought to justice,” Brooks explained Tuesday. Approximately 200 people, including Jonylah’s mother Judy Watkins, gathered at a vigil held later that night at the site of the fatal shooting.

“When I find him, he’s going to jail,” Watkins told DNAinfo.com. The 20-year-old mother was shot in the leg last spring while pregnant with Jonylah.

As of Wednesday, police said they had some leads, including security camera footage of the gunman leaving the scene in a blue van. They believe the shooting was gang related.

*UPDATE: The Utica Observer-Dispatch reports police have not yet apprehended 64-year-old Kurt Myers, the shooter who killed four people and injured two in upstate New York Wednesday morning. Officials believe he may have been picked up by a taxi.

Police have considered Myers “armed and extremely dangerous,” advising residents to stay indoors and call 911 if they see him.

Police said they are “familiar” with the suspect, but could not comment on any criminal record he may have.

Police in upstate New York are on the hunt for a suspect who killed four people and left two wounded during a shooting at a local car wash and a barbershop, according to The Associated Press.

State police say a man fatally shot two unidentified people Wednesday morning at Gaffey’s Fast Lube in the village of Herkimer. Two others were killed at Jon’s Barber Shop just a mile away in the village of Mohawk; both areas are about 65 miles east of Syracuse.

In all, six people have been shot.

Herkimer County Community College and local schools are on lockdown.

When Perry called Jurnee early one morning, she thought it was one of her lovely jokesters. “I was like ‘Yeah, right, this isn’t Tyler.’ He said, ‘No sweetie, this is! Are you asleep? Okay, this is my cell, call me when you wake up.’” She woke up to an offer for a marquee role in a major film.

Come on.  Were you really surprised at the recent security breach perpetrated on A-Listers and politicians? If you haven’t heard, reports began surfacing Tuesday that personal and financial information of certain public figures – including Jay-Z, Beyonce and even our own First Lady – somehow ended up on a Russian website. Surprised? Probably not.  Perhaps a better word is concerned – because if FLOTUS can be hacked, it would probably be no sweat for a hacker to decipher your less-than-inscrutable online banking password. Thinking… maybe using your daughter’s birth date backward is not as genius as you initially thought.

So how do you keep your confidential information confidential?  Here are a handful of tips.

Don’t be lazy about your passwords.  The human brain is fully capable of memorizing two new passwords every three months.  Don’t create passwords using any information someone can find out about you by looking at your Facebook profile, including your kids’ names, spouse’s birthday, anniversary, or high school mascot.

Use complex pass codes AND passwords. You can use easy-to-remember passwords for some accounts, but anything connected to your bank account should be protected by a complex alpha-numeric pass code.  That includes pass codes for online banking, Paypal, Amazon and eBay accounts, utility accounts, cell phone carriers, and even your reloadable Starbucks card. Always have at least two passwords operating at any given time – one password to protect non-financial accounts and another, more complex password to protect your money.

Manually type in the URLs for sites containing your sensitive information.  If you need to pay a bill, type the address to the service provider’s site directly into your toolbar.  If an unexpected email lands in your inbox from your bank or another service provider, avoid clicking any links contained on that page. Spoof (fake) emails land in your inbox looking and sounding official.  In fact, just last week, Paypal’s phones were jammed with reports of anonymous spoof emails sent to various Paypal account holders. Spoofs usually ask for sensitive personal information or login information for one or more of your accounts.  If you think you may have received an email from your bank, make a call.  To respond online, open a new window in your browser and type in the URL to your online banking account and log in. It’s a much safer route.

Use a secure connection.  If you are ever going to access anything personal, including your email, use a secure connection.  It may be faster to take a quick look at your email using the free Wi-Fi connection at the local coffee shop, but it is safer to use your own secure mobile broadband connection instead. Many smartphones are equipped with their own hotspot function. If your phone doesn’t have hotspot capabilities, pay ten or twenty bucks a month for a secure mobile broadband connection. It’s worth it.

Monitor your credit.  Take advantage of the monitoring services provided by your bank.  Set up your account so that you are automatically alerted when your account information changes, or when “card not present” purchases are made online or by phone, or when ATM withdrawals are made.  Many banks will text or email you this information.  Request an annual copy of your consumer banking report from ChexSystems to make sure no rogue accounts are connected to your name. You can also register for credit monitoring services with one or more of the three credit reporting agencies.  Each will inform you of any new credit inquiries, credit accounts and changes in your credit score.

Consider enrolling in an identity theft protection program.  In some ways, the companies that offer these programs act as sort of an identity insurance company, notifying you immediately of any activity with your personal / financial information.  They may also provide added services like monitoring black market websites where fake identities are bought and sold and acting on your behalf to help recover what’s been lost if you are a victim of identity theft.  Most of these services are available for about $20 per month.

Make no mistake; you won’t be able to completely forego having to monitor your personal and financial information.  But spend just a few minutes talking to an ethical hacker and you will soon find out when it comes to your personal information, it’s not hard for a total stranger to slide into your personal business unnoticed and wreak a little havoc on your credit, pocket book and peace of mind.  Tis always better to be proactive than reactive.

Nearly four dozen people were arrested as demonstrators marched in Brooklyn for a third consecutive night to protest the NYPD shooting of a 16-year-old boy over the weekend, authorities said.

Supporters held a candlelight vigil Wednesday night for Kimani “Kiki” Gray just blocks from where he was shot to death by police Saturday night.

The anger was palpable as a group of young people heckled police officers in helmets and later marched down a street.

The vigil’s organizers tried and failed to calm the young people, some of whom later threw bottles at police officers. One officer’s face was hit with a brick; he was treated for a laceration, police confirmed.

Forty-six people were arrested on disorderly conduct charges during Wednesday evening’s protest, including Gray’s sister, police told NBC 4 New York. Police said additional and varying charges are pending for many of those arrested. Specific charges against Gray’s sister were not immediately clear.

A spokesman for Gray’s parents said they would not speak publicly as long as there was violence, which he said has “clouded their message.”

“It’s a tough time for the community,” said the spokesman, Rev. Gilford Monrose. “But the family and myself do not condone the violence.”

McDonald’s Corp. is getting slammed with a cringe-worthy lawsuit by a mother who claims her two-year-old son ate a used condom he found while in the play area of one of its Chicago restaurants, according to Reuters.

On Wednesday, Anishi Spencer filed a complaint against the big-name chain in Cook County Circuit Court on behalf of her sons Jonathan, 4, and Jacquel Hines, 3. Court documents state that she and her children were at the restaurant in early February when Jacquel picked up the used condom off the floor, coughing up a piece it shortly after.

Both boys received medical care and have suffered lasting injuries, pain and discomfort, says Spencer. She is seeking at least $50,000 in damages for McDonald’s negligence in cleaning “hazardous debris” from the play area.

Jeffrey Deutschman, the lawyer representing Spencer and her sons, has described the case as “disgusting” and is pushing forward with the lawsuit, despite his efforts to settle.

The company has yet to comment.

The “Let Me Love You” singer revealed his second collaboration with the legendary songstress in an interview with Digital Spy. “The first time I worked for her I wrote a song for her, which in itself was surreal [...] This time around I actually did a duet with her – it’s her and me on one song, which was a challenge to say the least!” he said. “I was trying to figure what I was even doing there – why would they need my voice when they have hers? [...] She wanted to do the song as a duet and I was flattered, but it definitely made me question my vocal ability.” The song, tentatively titled “Water and Flame,” will be featured on Dion’s upcoming album due in October.

Just two months after ending his run on ABC’s medical drama Private Practice, Taye Diggs have landed on his feet with a new role in the TNT murder mystery pilot Murder in the First, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The 42-year-old actor will star alongside Boss alum Kathleen Robertson.

The hopeful series, penned by Steven Bochco (NYPD Blue), will center on two seemingly unrelated high-profile murder cases and the subsequent police investigation, arrest and trial. The drama will aim to give viewers a glimpse into the world of modern justice.

THR writes:

“Diggs will star as Terry Seagrave, a homicide detective who is dealing with his wife’s terminal illness. For Terry, being a cop is his one chance to live right and “do good,” and the job keeps him focused and off the sadness that tends to preoccupy his thoughts. Robertson will portray Hildy Mulligan, Terry’s partner, who is described as self-assured and sexy without knowing it. She’s divorced with a young daughter and a fearless detective who is keenly aware that her partner is grappling with a difficult situation.”

Diggs and Robertson reportedly both received multiple pilot offers this casting season before accepting the drama’s script.
