Blackface

It was bad enough we had to report on T Magazine’s glaring lack of diversity in its relaunch issue, which was followed with an apology from its Editor-in-Chief Deborah Needleman.

Now comes this racially-insensitive gem. Jezebel’s Laura Beck has pointed out Numéro magazine‘s use of a highly bronzed white model in one of its fashion editorials entitled “African Queen.”

We’ll give you a moment to process that information and pick up your jaws.

Moment over. The young lady in the spread is 16-year-old, blond-haired, blue-eyed Ondria Hardin, who is seen with her skin darkened and striking a pose for the French glossy. To start, we know there are plenty of white people living in Africa — but Ondria is from North Carolina and we’re pretty sure white people in Africa don’t walk around in what could be considered a light application of blackface.

The 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards - Backstage And Audience

Four years after his highly publicized and scrutinized assault against Rihanna in February 2009, Chris Brown is finally becoming more open about their recent reconciliation and the fateful night that changed the young lovers’ lives forever.

While speaking with reporters at Elton John’s Aids Foundation Oscars fund raising party in West Hollywood on Sunday (Feb. 24), the 23-year-old singer opened up about what he considers his “deepest regret” in life.

“Sometimes you row, you fight, with the one you love and things get said, stuff spirals,” he told Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper. “That night was the deepest regret of my life, the biggest mistake. But she loves me – what can I say? I’m forgiven [...] but, yes, I worked hard for it.”

Brown added that he has “grown up” and learned how to deal with the fame, as well as the ridicule (looks to Seth Macfarlane).

“People attack me and criticise [sic] me, it happens all the time,” he said. “But they don’t know me, and they don’t know us. It doesn’t bother me any more. Other people can judge us but they don’t know anything.”

And a recent soundbite from the NY Post should answer all the lingering questions surrounding the couple who seem to be spending every waking moment together.

“We are really happy. We are back together,” he explained. “She is the most beautiful girl in the world.”

Trayvon Martin’s Parents Ready To Let Jury Decide Fate Of Son’s Killer

Trayvon Martin

The final, violent moments in the life of their son, Trayvon Martin, no longer dominate the national news, as they once did. Tens of thousands no longer attend rallies demanding justice for the slain teenager; pundits no longer debate the case on every media platform imaginable. What once had been the big story has increasingly become yesterday’s news.

But Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin haven’t stopped fighting.

One year ago Tuesday, they were grieving and relatively anonymous parents, trying to come to grips with the sudden death of their 17-year-old son. But in time, they became celebrities of sorts in a world of gun violence and vigilante justice.

To their supporters, they were the faces and the voices of victims of racial profiling.

While the spotlight largely has faded since then, they say their commitment has not.

“We (want to) make sure that no other parents have to go through what we have gone through in the last year,” Fulton told CNN’s Piers Morgan on Monday night.

On February 26, 2012, her teenage son was walking back to the Sanford, Florida, home of his father’s fiancee after picking up some Skittles and an iced tea at 7-Eleven. That’s when, and where, then-28-year-old neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman spotted him.

What happened between then and when Zimmerman fatally shot the teen is subject to dispute, one that could be settled by a jury starting June 10, when Zimmerman is set to go on trial on a second-degree murder charge.

As the prosecution and defense lawyers battled in court in the weeks and months that followed, Trayvon Martin’s parents became less visible on the national scene.

Peeples

Earlier this month, we dropped off a few tidbits about the Tina Gordon Chism-written comedy Tyler Perry Presents Peeples– starring Scandal’s Kerry Washington and The Office‘s Craig Robinson– which follows the always-awkward (yet hilarious) plot of meeting the parents.

The full synopsis for the film reads:

“Wade Walker is eager to propose to his girlfriend, Grace Peeples. But after a year of living together, the beautiful, successful Grace is still cagey about introducing average guy Wade to her ambitious, upper crust family. So when Grace leaves for an annual reunion at her parents’ swanky Sag Harbor compound, Wade decides to crash the gathering, charm his soon-to-be in-laws and slip a ring on Grace’s finger. However Wade’s plans go hilariously awry when he meets the high-powered, seemingly picture-perfect family who’ll do whatever it takes to keep up appearances. Wade soon finds himself caught in a web of white lies and comic dysfunction, and realizes that his only hope of ever marrying Grace means a take-no-prisoners face-off with Judge Peeples, Grace’s disapproving dad who won’t accept anything less than the very best for his favorite daughter.”

Peeples, which hits theaters May 10, also features David Alan Grier, S. Epatha Merkerson, Melvin Van Peebles, Diahann Carroll and Kali Hawk. Check out the official trailer below!

The 10 Biggest Dating Mistakes People Make On Facebook

FacebookFacebook abuse is rampant! We all know at least one person whose status updates never cease to annoy or bewilder. Or how about that chick who is constantly inviting you to engage in a mafia war? And seriously, I am thisclose to defriending a friend from junior high who insists on tagging photos of me in braces. But Facebook abusers aren’t just hurting the innocent — they’re also seriously ruining their own dating game. Check out the 10 biggest dating mistakes people make on Facebook.

1. Your Relationship Status Is Giving Me Whiplash. There’s nothing more exciting and dramatic than an off-and-on relationship. You fall madly in love — update status to “in a relationship.” You get in a big fight! — update status to “it’s complicated.” You have awesome makeup sex — back to “in a relationship.” But then you break up in the morning — suddenly “single.” But then he sends you roses two months later and begs for you back! Guess who’s “in a relationship”? Congratulations, your love life sounds exciting — your manically flip-flopping Facebook status updates, however, are embarrassing.

2. The Royal “We.” Oh hai. Did Facebook start a special section for couples? No? Then why do all of your updates use “we” instead of “I”? “We loved last night’s ‘Modern Family’!” Ugh, stop it.

3. Hint, Hint, Hint. Using your status update to send someone a cryptic message is way creepy. It’s also way obvious to every single one of your friends that you are sending a message to someone, even though we may not know who. It is also sending a great message to other dudes — that you’re too immature to be direct and not play games.

U.S. Census Bureau Cuts ‘Negro’ From Surveys

U.S. Census

The U.S. Census Bureau is dropping the term “Negro” on its surveys and forms after more than 100 years of use. The outdated title will be reduced to the options of “black” or “African-American,” according to officials.

The agency will reportedly include the new language in next year’s annual American Community Survey, which reaches approximately 3.5 million households in the United States. The discussion of cutting the term “Negro” popped up during the 2010 Census; it was ultimately chosen to be included on the forms.

The bureau believed that there was still a segment of the U.S. population that identified with the term, most of them being older Blacks living in the South.

But Nicholas Jones, chief of the bureau’s racial statistics branch, says public feedback confirms that the term is “offensive” and that the Black population no longer identifies with the word.

“Negro” first appeared on the U.S. Census in 1900 to identify people of African descent, before being deemed insulting during the civil rights and black power movements.

Omarosa ManigaultReality star Omarosa Manigault is making her return to the television series that made her a pop culture phenomenon and, much like before, she’s out for blood.

The 39-year-old personality recently sat down with ESSENCE.com to discuss the new season of All-Star Celebrity Apprentice, stating that she still has her “knives sharpened” for the 14-contestant competition that boasts a prize of $250,000 to the charity of her choice. Manigault has chosen the Sue Duncan Children’s Center in honor of her late fiancé, actor Michael Clarke Duncan.

Related: Omarosa: ‘Michael Clarke Duncan Was The Love Of My Life’

The gentle giant passed away last September just two months after suffering a heart attack and Manigault sees this as a way to keep his legacy alive.

“When you look at what’s going on in [Chicago], I think the center’s mission is vital. My fiancé, the late Michael Clarke Duncan, is an alumni, but he’s not related to Sue Duncan,” she said. “The 200-plus children that they’re serving at the center literally need every dollar I raise. Michael and I have made sure to make contributions to the center over the years so I wanted to keep that going.”

Manigault said she is dealing with the loss of Duncan by trusting in God and finding her own way to welcome closure.

“I’m still in our home. Michael’s toothbrush is still in our bathroom; his jacket is still hanging on the hook,” she explained. “I live with the presence of Michael Clarke Duncan every day because everything is as he left it. I need time to decide to put away the toothbrush, or fold up the clothes that he threw over the back of the chair. But I haven’t done that and that’s my process of grieving.”

She continued, “It’s unbelievable at times. I miss him every single day. It doesn’t get better, but you get better. So I’m working on getting better.”

Read all about Manigault’s thoughts on the new Apprentice (premiering March 3), her journey as an ordained minister and more over at ESSENCE.com!

Star Style: Jada Pinkett Smith

UPTOWN_star_style_jada_pinkett_smithBy Naima Turner

This girl does it all and is a force to be reckoned with inside and outside of Hollywood. I’m talking Jada Pinkett Smith! The actress, mother, wife, activist, and philanthropist is among the most notable and noble black women doing her thing. Whether she’s promoting a cause dear to her heart or supporting her husband and children on the red carpet, she is always spotted in a showstopping look.

In spite of what the runway dictates, style comes in all sizes and heights. If you’re a petite woman looking for a bit of style inspiration, here are a few ideas for pulling seamless looks together like this week’s Star Style pick, Jada!

UPTOWN_star_style_jada_pinkett_smith1Tailored garments, like this pre-fall 2013 Narciso Rodriguez leather sheath, perfectly complement petite frames. Jada’s dress is not only on-trend this season but will also make a style splash for years.

UPTOWN_star_style_jada_pinkett_smith2Try a little mood-mixing with your look. Combining a sweet pair of mary jane shoes with an edgy turquoise snake-print trench, makes for one hot, uptown look.

UPTOWN_star_style_jada_pinkett_smith3A head-to-toe monochromatic outfit doesn’t have to be boring. Wake up the matchy-matchy, with a complementary colored coat and accessories.

UPTOWN_star_style_jada_pinkett_smith4An open neckline, like a V-neck, on dresses, sweaters, and blouses elongates the neck of a petite woman and exposes the collarbone, which is very sexy.

UPTOWN_star_style_jada_pinkett_smith5If you must (and can) rock a mini like Jada, then by all means do it right! When shopping for a dress that shows off your legs, keep it classy by not choosing one that also reveals your arms and shoulders. Remember sexy is about creating an illusion.

UPTOWN_star_style_jada_pinkett_smith6If a dress or skirt is desired, an A-line skirt with a flirty hemline could be the way to go.

UPTOWN_star_style_jada_pinkett_smith7Nothing says drama like a fabulous hat. In fact, the only accessory this hat needed was a fierce owner like Jada to pull it off!

UPTOWN_star_style_jada_pinkett_smith8Choose prints that are in balance with your shape and height. In this case, small prints work better than larger prints on petite frames.

N.J. Father Who Impregnated Daughter Sees Himself As Prophet, Ex-Wife Testifies

Aswad AyindeAswad Ayinde (pictured) , the New Jersey father who stands accused of raping and impregnating three of his five daughters when they were all minors, is currently facing his second of five jury trials. In this proceeding, the 54-year-old is charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault, and two counts of sexual assault. His former spouse, Beverly Ayinde, testified at Tuesday’s trial to, again, speak about the horrors that went on in their home for over 17 years, reports NorthJersey.com.

Ayinde, whose actual name is Charles McGill, directed the R&B group, the Fugees’, “Killing Me Softly” video. Beverly described her ex as a kind of brutal Svengali who tried to control everyone in the household under a reign of terror. She told jurors that Ayinde “equaled himself to being a prophet.” The woman went on to describe her statement in more detail: “As time went on, he was god-like. I had to call him, ‘my god.’ He equated himself to Jesus Christ … He would sit us all down and lecture us about his greatness and his power … At another point, he equated himself to Prince and Michael Jackson.”

With two PETA campaigns under her belt, Taraji P. Henson is surely someone special. This time around, the talented Hollywood beauty dons a nude-colored tunic and giant wings for the “Be an Angel for Animals” campaign, which aims to raise awareness about dogs that are chained outside and left without shelter.

Taraji poses with her own dog, Uncle Willie, who inspired her to pose for the campaign. “I never thought I could be in love with an animal until I had Willy. He’s our family,” she said in a behind-the-scenes video of the photo shoot. “He has beds in every room. He travels everywhere I go. He’s just the best companion.”

Taraji once again joins a long line of celebrities who’ve stripped for PETA’s “Ink Not Mink,” “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur,” and “Eating Meat Is A Sin” campaigns. Keep clicking and check out the steamy photos.

Spoiler Alert: Black Politicians Are Not Civil Rights Leaders

$

jesse jacksonBy Charles D. Ellison

There’s quite a bit many want to say about the physics-defying fall of former Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr.  There will be more to say about it now that the special election to replace his seat is pretty much at its end – no way in hell will a Black Republican ex-convict wrestle dominance from Chicago’s notorious Democratic political machine.

With that settled, some of us will resort back to Jackson, Jr. Lore.  Resisting the temptation to engage in gossipy chatter about the Rolodex-watch, home-renovating, Michael Jackson memorabilia excess of a once rising star politician with the platinum political name is hard. But, there’s really not much to it beyond what it is: another tragic example of an office holder with a hand too deep in the cookie jar.  What’s done is done, he got caught and now.

One thing you can say about Jackson is that, at the end, he took it like a man.  Sources talk of a soul facing inevitability, but clear-headed enough to haggle with prosecutors on the issue of what to do about his partner in life and crime: wife and former Chicago Alderman Sandi Jackson.  Having already messed up, Jackson made a point to get as much of a favored guilty plea arrangement for both he and his significant other as he could get.  In the end, there was a bit of subtle valor.  “I have no interest in wasting the taxpayers’ time or money,” was a somber Jackson in the courtroom last week.  Nor do the rest of us. And so, for all the salacious details about a political husband-and-wife team smoking the opium of success to its outer limits, there is a sense that you couldn’t kick him down any longer.

There’s a bigger opportunity here, however, than just ruminating on a crusty cautionary tale.  It’s a moment for the larger Black community to, as Q-Tip once bucked, “breathe and stop.”  We’ve seen many a Black elected official mess up and perp walk their way from courtroom to jail.  But, never did the image of it leave such an indelible print on the Black psyche in recent years as that of a Jackson going through it.  We typically associate the Jackson name – the political one that is – with racial legend.  For sure, much of that brand has diminished over the years due to Rev. Jackson’s age, business dealings and an infamous unscripted moment of testicular nip-tuck.

In short, we are fast learning that our Black elected officials are not civil rights leaders.  And maybe that’s not such a bad thing.  Jackson, Jr. was famous for blowing up his spot as a sort of self-styled neo-activist on Capitol Hill.  He attempted to channel much of his father’s famous oratorical swagger in the House chamber, and his more public legislative priorities and gestures signaled old wine in a new bottle.  There was lots of talk about New School walk, but the actions suggested Old School paradigm.

Politicians are not activists.  Nor should we see be viewing them as such.  Yet, many of us still do.  As a result, we are unpleasantly rattled and shaken when one of them falls from grace.

jesse jackson jrWe must accept that they are paid stewards and advocates of the public trust who are tasked with shaping sound public policy in the best interests of the people they represent.  In Congress, they are paid a handsome six-figure annual sum to do this full time.  Their jobs require huge commitments and personal sacrifice.  It can be thankless and wrapped in minutiae.  This is why there are some who get ousted after serving only one term.  Sure, there are moments when redistricting plays a role.  But, for the most part, many go to Washington wanting to play “the game” rather than work on their district’s behalf.

Through all the showy House floor speeches and the in-your-face protestations, Jackson, Jr. was still a politician. This was very evident based on how he attempted to maneuver his way into a Senate seat via a disgraced Gov. Rod Blagojevich to how he moved campaign money to fund an opulent lifestyle.

Of course, we all have our vices and personal flaws.  We also enjoy the high-life rewards and perks that come with success.  There’s no harm in that. But, it’s rather fascinating to watch some elected representatives who promote themselves as part of an activist Justice League of civil rights superheroes when they’re really not.  They are mortals like the rest of us.  In fact, most African Americans in elected office find themselves saddled with many of the same socio-economic challenges faced by most people of color.  Quiet as it’s kept Black Members of Congress are among the least wealthy on the Hill. Many represent fairly impoverished, unemployment-riddled districts where folks are barely keeping it together.  Unfortunately, platitudes from elected officials rehashing outdated platforms do little to comfort the household pondering over an electric disconnect notice.

There’s nothing wrong with simply explaining it like it is.  Yet, if many Black elected are not clinging on to 20th century war stories, they are fashioning themselves into a collective cause celebre’ of black-ties and galas.  Much of it seems far removed and detached from some rather pressing business at hand.

Any politician’s fall is a tragic story, especially one with so much promise.  It is a stain on a democracy we pray can be a little more perfect.  One corrupt pol in handcuffs means a few others who didn’t get caught.  In this instance, transparency would have been useful if Jackson, Jr. had simply put some trust in those who voted for him.  Instead, he auctioned it off.  Perhaps it’s about time elected officials practice keeping it a bit more real with their constituents about what really happens inside Washington.  Rather than viewing their constituents as something akin to feudal serfs working Lord Politician’s manor, it’s time they begin treating citizens as actual partners in a very difficult, complex and twisted political process.

Michelle ObamaMichelle Obama says it was “absolutely not surprising” that folks took issue with her satellite appearance at the Oscars.

Her video drop-in from the White House to announce best picture sparked a national debate over whether it was appropriate, and some conservative critics accused her of crashing the event in an attempt to upstage it.

She attributed the chatter to a culture shift that has spawned legions of bloggers, tweeters and others who talk about anything and everything all the time.

“Shoot, my bangs set off a national conversation. My shoes can set off a national conversation. That’s just sort of where we are. We’ve got a lot of talking going on,” the first lady told AP Thursday before an appearance in Chicago, her hometown. “It’s like everybody’s kitchen-table conversation is now accessible to everybody else so there’s a national conversation about anything.”

French Montana may be signed to Bad Boy Records, but when it comes to Friday morning’s (March 1) shooting that left one man dead, the rap star insists that he had nothing to do with it.

After his concert Thursday night at the Theatre of the Living Arts in Philly, gunfire erupted in front of the hotel where Montana’s bus was parked. Shortly after midnight a black four-door sedan pulled up and a passenger from the vehicle fired several shots. Two people standing in front of the hotel returned fire to vehicle, but police say no shots were fired from inside the tour bus. The incident claimed the life Jowann King, 26, of Flushing, New York, who was fatally shot in the chest. A second unidentified victim was treated and released.

Bashid McLean, the Bronx man charged with murdering his mother, posed for a disturbing photo discovered by authorities in which McLean held his mother’s decapitated head like a trophy.

According to the Daily News, McLean’s lawyer says the 23-year-old had stopped taking medication prescribed for schizophrenia a few days before the incident.

The remains of 52-year-old Tanya Byrd, were found stuffed into garbage bags scattered across four locations in the South Bronx.

While his mother slept, McLean allegedly fatally hit her before stealing money to buy a saw.

According to the Huffington Post: “The alleged killer used a two-foot Black and Decker jigsaw to carve up the corpse. The photo of the gruesome aftermath was discovered by police on McLean’s cell phone.”

McLean was arrested on Tuesday after a dog-walker spotted Tanya Byrd’s leg in a pile of garbage near the apartment where she was killed.
