From April 17th – 23rd, hundreds of spas will give consumers the opportunity to explore wellness in an extraordinary and affordable way during Spa Week’s Spring 2017 Event. “A profound shift in the way people consume wellness is underway: once a luxury or “add-on”, it is now being infused into every aspect of daily life,” shares Katherine Johnston, Senior Research Fellow, GWI.

From holistic salt therapy centers to detoxify the respiratory system, to standing in a -160 degree Cryotherapy Chamber to reduce cellulite and improve circulation, these signature services – normally valued at anywhere from $100 to $500 – will be available for just $50 each. Sit back and get ready to enjoy this roller coaster ride of healthy lifestyle choices and rejuvenate with our top recommendations for Spa Week’s Spring 2017 event.

Get Salty
Looking for a natural treatment that is designed to help you purify your skin, clear your lungs and overall help you de-stress? Take a trip to visit the Hygea Wellness Co & Salt Room in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania for a Salt Therapy treatment (Spa Week $50, normally $100). There, you will bask in a quiet Salt Therapy room made of seven tons of Dead Sea salt and breathe in its surrounding salty and misty vapors. As you meditate and unwind from the outside world, the ions will draw out the pollution, infections and toxins in your body. Not only will you reap the physical benefits of improved breathing and clearer skin, you will leave feeling completely relaxed and refreshed – like a breath of fresh air.

Freezer Friendly
Does the thought of a treatment where you freeze various parts of your body leave you with chills? Well, when you stop by the Carrollton Square Spa in Texas for a 50 Minute Cryotherapy Massage (Spa Week $50, normally $100), you’ll be joining the ranks of World Champion LeBron James and actress Demi Moore in using alternative methods to improve your health and minimize your pain. Carrollton’s targeted arctic treatment uses cryosticks during the massage to remove tension, promote rapid healing, and reduce the inflammation of muscles and joints. You can also visit the RonnaSkin Day Spa in Westminster, Colorado for a 60 Minute Results-Oriented MicroNeedling Treatment with Cryotherapy (Spa Week $50, normally $107). This facial concentrates on rejuvenating and revolutionizing your skin with small icy blasts that will increase collagen production and erase wrinkles.

Face-less Facials
A facial…for your butt? Initially, we asked the same question but when we look at celebrities like J-Lo, Beyonce and Kim Kardashian and their finely crafted assets, we can’t help but want to book an appointment at NYC’s Smooth Synergy for a Fanny Facial (Spa Week $50, normally $150). This sculpting treatment begins with an exfoliating scrub to smooth your backside, and then employs small zaps of micro-currents to your butt and upper-thighs to sculpt and lift your butt. A similar effect that you would get if you went to the gym to do squats. About an hour later, you’ll be left with a perky derriere and an overwhelming confidence to flaunt your newly contoured bottom down the street.

Escape from the Man Cave
Don’t worry guys, Spa Week isn’t just for the ladies. If you’re facing a hairy dilemma, we’ve created the perfect treatment for you. The Bearded Boss Men’s Facial (Spa Week $50, normally $75) – at NYC’s very own KUR Skin Lab. There, your beard will be attended to with a series of soothing massages while the hair is thoroughly cleansed and the skin is exfoliated and moisturized. Your beard can also get the royal treatment that it needs in Indianapolis, Indiana with Pure Image’s Burly Beard Facial (Spa Week $50, normally $75). From its invigorating facial cleanse to a soothing massage, these alluring treatments are designed to build confidence and keep the beard soft and groomed – perfect for a night out on the town.

Entering the Gemisphere
What do celebrities like Katy Perry, Adele, and Robert Downey Jr. have in common? They are all harnessing the special healing properties from crystals to ward off negative energy and promote healing and relaxation. To experience this modern day treatment, head down to The Spa at CopperWynd in Scottsdale, Arizona for an Amethyst massage (Spa Week $50, normally $120). This immersive body massage utilizes the ability of the gemstone as an infused oil to block and reduce pain. You will leave feeling physically and spiritually renewed.

Joining Spa Week for the Spring 2017 event, sponsors include skincare sponsor, Peter Thomas Roth, beauty device sponsor Clarisonic and travel sponsor, Grand Fiesta Americana- Coral Beach, Cancun. The event is co-sponsored by CEW (Cosmetic Executive Women) and a portion of the proceeds from the Spring and Fall Events are donated to CancerandCareers.org.

Annual New York Season Features Two Thrilling Programs and Premieres by Leila Da Rocha, Jae Man Joo, Bridget L. Moore, and Former Ailey Dancer Marcus Jarrell Willis

UPTOWN_ailey_ii_sketches_of_flames

Ailey II in Bridget L. Moore’s Sketches of Flames

February 6, 2017 (New York, NY) – Ailey II makes its NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts debut March 29 – April 2, sharing two programs of premieres and returning favorites with audiences during its annual New York season. The 12 young dancers return to the New York stage after a 25-city world tour to share their artistry and prowess in an expansive repertory by emerging and established choreographers, including Leila Da Rocha, Jean Emile, Jae Man Joo, Ray Mercer, Bridget L. Moore, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater member Jamar Roberts, and former Ailey dancer Marcus Jarrell Willis.

Ailey II is universally renowned for merging the spirit and energy of the country’s best young dance talent with the passion and creative vision of today’s most outstanding emerging choreographers. Founded in 1974, the company embodies Mr. Ailey’s pioneering mission of establishing an extended cultural community that provides dance performances, training, and community programs for all people. Ailey II flourished into one of the most popular dance companies in the country under the direction of Sylvia Waters during its first 38 years. With new Artistic Director Troy Powell at the helm, Ailey II continues to thrive as he brings a fresh dimension to this beloved company. Ailey II’s annual touring schedule now stretches to Europe and beyond, and the company performs in over 30 cities each year. The company’s 12 dynamic young dancers come from all over the country, including local talent Khalia Campbell (Bronx, NY), NYU alumnus Jacoby Pruitt (Miami, FL), and 2015 Princess Grace Award winner Courtney Celeste Spears (Baltimore, MD).

“We are thrilled to return to New York for our annual engagement, and to present our first season at NYU Skirball Center for the Arts,” says Ailey II Artistic Director Troy Powell. “The two programs include diverse and powerful works that showcase the strength, grace, and versatility of these gifted young dancers.”

The All New program includes three stunning 2016-17 world premieres: Circular, Stream of Consciousness, and Sketches of Flames. Princess Grace Award-winning choreographer Jae Man Joo’s Circular is a heartfelt conversation through movement. The Korean-born Joo’s distinctive choreographic style – a blend of classical and contemporary ballet – is showcased in this large ensemble work that captures the full circle of human emotions. The melodic soundscape is by a diverse group of composers, including Denisov and Handel. Stream of Consciousness, by former Ailey company member Marcus Jarrell Willis, gives physical life to our inner thoughts. Willis weaves six simple gestures into “the stream,” the tumultuous monologue within each person’s mind.

UPTOWN_ailey_ii_stream_of_consciousness

Ailey II in Marcus Jarrell Willis’s Stream of Consciousness

Set to a contemporary reimagining of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons by Max Richter, this work echoes the tension and poignancy of the music’s ever-changing tides. In Sketches of Flames, Bridget L. Moore fuses flamenco influences with her African-American and contemporary aesthetic to create a rapturous ensemble dance. Set to a series of passionate folk songs and drawing upon the writings of Federico García Lorca and others, each section of this eight-part work depicts a different facet of the joys and sorrows of love.

The Contemporary Favorites program showcases the passion and virtuosity of the young dancers in a 2016-17 world premiere, and three returning favorites from the 2015-16 season: Meika, In & Out, Gemeos, and Something Tangible. In the colorful premiere duet Meika, set to music by Max Richter and Isaac Albéniz, French choreographer Leila Da Rocha uses dance to counter the unrest caused by barbarism and violence. Building on the body’s natural breathing rhythms, her movement takes on the push- pull of opposing energies to ultimately reach a message of peace. Choreographer and Ailey School alumnus Jean Emile’s In & Out is a poignant work for eight dancers that gives an unflinchingly honest view of the ups and downs of contemporary life. Drawing on a mix of dance techniques, Emile brings a fresh approach, amplified by a varied score that includes music by Alva Noto, Alberto Iglesias, and Jun Miyake. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater dancer Jamar Roberts made his Ailey II choreographic debut in 2015 with Gêmeos (Portuguese for twins). Loosely based on the relationship of Roberts and his brother growing up as children – one a dancer, the other an athlete – Roberts illustrates the dynamic between contrasting personalities and how they evolve from hostility to harmony. Using music with heavy percussion, brassy horns, groovy bass guitar, and the commanding singing style of Afrobeat star Fela Kuti, Roberts perfectly captures the energy of youth in Gêmeos. Inspired by everyday emotions that awaken and bring color to the human spirit, choreographer Ray Mercer leads the ensemble cast into a series of vignettes that reflect sensations of love, passion, fear, and self-doubt in Something Tangible. The work features a wide range of musical styles that include artists Max Richter, Ólafur Arnalds, Geoff Bennett, and an original score by Bongi Duma.

Angela Robinson: More than Meets the Eye

By Daria Fennell

Every week, we are mesmerized and stunned by the actions of the cold, calculating, and cunning Veronica Harrington, the woman we love to hate, on OWN’s The Haves and the Have Nots. In stark contrast, Angela Robinson, who portrays Veronica Harrington, is a warm, amazing, fiercely-talented, and inspirational spirit. We caught up with Robinson to learn about her awesome journey from Broadway to one of the most popular shows on the small screen.

UPTOWN: Where are you from originally, and when did you realize that you had a gift for acting?
Angela Robinson: I’m originally from Jacksonville, Florida. My mother used to teach 12th grade English. And she was over the drama department at her school and so I had to sit in on all the rehearsals. So at 10 years old, I fell in love with musical theatre. That’s what I wanted to do. I just wanted to make it on Broadway. That’s was my biggest goal: to just be on Broadway. So I fell in love with it then and just continued to pursue it against all odds. And my parents said, “No,” but I continued because it was something I really felt I was born to do.

U: Since you have always embodied it, what is your definition of “Black Girl Magic”?
AR: “Black Girl Magic” to me has nothing to do with physical appearance. “Black Girl Magic” has to do with a confidence that a woman has when [she is] totally living out [her] purpose.

U: I did my research and I know your career began on Broadway. And I wanted to know how you feel your transition has been from Broadway, starring in such incredible Broadway productions as Oprah Winfrey Presents The Color Purple and appearing as Shug Avery, to starring on television as Veronica Harrington on OWN’s The Haves and the Have Nots?
AR: I thought it would be harder than it has been. I studied acting, that’s sort of my craft. I love musicals, but acting is what I really, really love. So it was a goal, I’ve always wanted to do television. It hasn’t been that difficult, but what has made it easier is having my first time out be with Tyler Perry. He’s giving and he’s patient. He does allow you to actually create as an artist, so we’re not pigeonholed. He allows us to create the characters and give input into the character. That really made this first time really easy because he is very generous. Also, I am working with several friends. I’ve known Renee Lawless, who plays Katheryn Cryer on The Haves and the Have Nots, for many, many years. We did the Miss Florida pageant years ago. I’ve known Crystal Fox, who portrays Hanna Young on the show, for a long time as well. We did a musical together many, many years ago in Atlanta. Also, being among friends makes it wonderful and easy. Crystal, Renee, and myself came out of the theater world and we understand the same language. It just makes it easier.

U: And it’s got to be a lot of fun on set having your friends there.
AR: Yes, we do have a lot of fun. (laughs)

U: Now you spoke a little about Mr. Perry, how has it been working with Oprah Winfrey?
AR: We don’t work with Oprah daily because Tyler writes and directs the show. He’s there every day with us. Oprah does come by the set once in a while, which is nice. I had the pleasure of having her as a producer of Oprah Presents The Color Purple. So she would come by there as well. It’s definitely always nice to know that somebody with that level of power, but also that level of integrity, is who you are working for — that’s your boss. There is a definitely a feeling of ease about it, although we don’t get to see her that often. Also, to say that Tyler is my boss is really cool too. He is down to earth, but he is very serious about his work. And I’m proud of all that he’s accomplished in Atlanta with the studio. He has one of the largest studios in the country. He definitely is inspiring to people working as artists trying to find their way watching him do it. And with all of that, being a mogul and doing movies, he’s so accessible and that’s good too.

U: Which season of The Haves and The Have Nots has been your favorite season and why?
AR: Ha! I think my favorite season was the season that I burned the house down. (laughs)

U: Oh, You pulled a “Left Eye.” Interesting. Oh my.
AR: I think that was my favorite season, but I’ve loved them all. And this season may take the place of that one and be my favorite. We’ll see.

U: Why do you feel your portrayal of Veronica Harrington resonates so deeply with your fans, to the point that a fan told you, “You need to treat your son better,” even though you don’t have any children?
AR: One, the writing is very real. And these are experiences that people actually have in their life. And two, the story line is so real for people. The coming out. The gay guy coming out, and it’s different that his mother is the one who doesn’t accept him instead of his father. A parent doesn’t accept him. And the fear of that and the pain of that. And also the pain of the parent who wants to change the child. And, of course, they won’t go as far as Veronica, but want to do whatever they can to change the child. I think those are experiences that have been had in many households in our country, especially in our Black community. I think people resonate with it. And what I think is really great is even the person who was really hard about that particular issue, doesn’t like Veronica and the way she treats her son. That’s sort of to me the ministry in the storyline because people can see themselves and see how unloving that looks. And maybe try if that’s happens in their lives to do better.

UPTOWN_angela_robinson2

U: How much of your personality is in Veronica Harrington?
AR: (Laughs) Well, you know, I think it’s almost impossible to play a character that you temperamentally can’t relate to. I think everyone can have a crazy temperament. If they were raised well and they love Jesus, it just doesn’t come out. (Laughs) I think everybody has a little crazy underneath. Much of it is not me at all, but if pushed, I don’t know where I could go. It’s more a matter of disposition, can you relate to being bossy, being controlling, being a know it all. If you know someone like that and feel that you can pull that off truthfully, then it is somewhere in your personality. But it doesn’t mean that’s who you are or that’s how you are. If it was exactly the way I am, then it wouldn’t be acting.

U: Also, what are some of your guilty pleasures that you enjoy when you have your rare down time?
AR: I love food. I love cooking, but I am not the kind of wife who cooks every day. When I do get in the kitchen, I really enjoy it. I enjoy trying new dishes, eating out, and trying new restaurants. I love, love, love sweets but I don’t indulge. Even though I love them, I don’t indulge unless I am on vacation. I enjoy long road trips. That’s one of my favorite things to do. I like to get in the car and drive from New York to Florida either alone or with my husband. We have a fun time on the road.

U: What is your favorite cuisine, or do you have one?
AR: I really am that girl that will try everything. If I don’t like it, I won’t try it again. If I would have to say what my favorite food is, I guess seafood.

U: What advice do you have for our readers, who feel like their dreams may not come true?
AR: It’s just impossible for your dreams not to come true as long as you are in pursuit of them. The only thing that can stop your dreams from coming true is you quitting. I believe that dreams are from God, and they’re meant to be pursued. They’re not meant to be sat on, they’re not meant to be put on the back burner — as people would say to me all the time — for a “real job.” Of course, you have to eat. Get whatever job you need to do in order to eat. The moment you stop, you are the one stopping your dreams from becoming a reality. That’s your purpose. Your dream somehow is linked to somebody else’s blessing. Whatever God sent you to do, that thing you do will bless someone else. Your dream isn’t for yourself. It’s not a selfish thing that I’m just going to do so I can feel good about me. Those songs that make you smile that you love to hear, that person wrote it, maybe for themselves, but it’s blessing you. Stop thinking this is all about me. Think I’m going to do this so that what I have to create, what I have inside of me can be a blessing to others.

U: So very well said. Do you have any final thoughts?
AR: I just want to say to the fans of The Haves and the Have Nots: thank you. I love tweeting with the fans. I love the interactions that we have on social media, even when they are cussing me out. I love it because it tells me that something we’re doing is moving you. And that’s what art should do. I just love the fans and I thank you guys for watching. I can’t believe we are on our fourth season. From day one to now, you guys have been there. I just want to really send a big shout-out and thank you. And stay in touch and keep watching.

Watch OWN’s The Haves and the Have Nots mid-season finale, this Tuesday, March 14th, at 9 p.m. EST/8 p.m. CST. Connect with Angela Robinson on Twitter and Instagram.

National Jewel Day: The Bling Celebs Love To Flaunt

UPTOWN_national_jewel_day_celebrity_jewelry

To some, today is simply March 13th. However, to others, it’s National Jewel Day, the day to celebrate everything having to do with bling — you know, birthstones, jewelers, and the glint that catches the eye. While we might not be draped in jewels on a regular basis, we sure can have a little escapism today by ogling the jewels of our favorite stars.

Instagram Photo

For the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards 2017, Zendaya accessorized her Daya by Zendaya copper-hued slip-dress with a filigree choker, gold ring, and giant bauble. Notice she kept the earrings rather simple for balance.

Instagram Photo

When is Mariah Carey not draped in jewels?! It just wouldn’t be a day ending in Y if MiMi wasn’t blinged out. However, her butterfly ring is certainly a favorite and is often in the rotation.

Instagram Photo

Sometimes, DJ Khaled takes a break from showing off his adorable son Asahd to give us a glimpse of one of his many “straight from Italy” timepieces.

Instagram Photo

When you play a character as over-the-top as Cookie Lyon, simple silver or white gold hoop earrings are all Taraji P. Henson needs in her everyday life — even if that includes shooting an ad campaign.

Instagram Photo

We love a man like Kevin Hart who isn’t afraid to accessorize with multiple chains, a watch, and a beautiful wedding ring.

Instagram Photo

Christina Milian loves to pile on the real and the costume, either way she always looks fab.

Instagram Photo

Divas like Patti LaBelle deserve diamonds.

Instagram Photo

If there’s one thing we know about Beyoncé, it’s that she loves adorning herself in jewels of all kinds.

Rihanna took the meaning of blinged out from head-to-toe to another level in these YSL boots.

No one could be fooled by the rocks JLo‘s got.

ArtFields Celebrates Its Fifth Year in Lake City, SC

As spring approaches, there’s no doubt you have wanderlust on the mind. This is the season for renewal after all, and visual art can play a major role in refreshing the mind and the soul. To that end, we’d like to put the nine-day art competition that is ArtFields on your travel radar — and hopefully your travel itinerary.

ArtFields will take over Lake City, which is described as a quintessential southern small town in eastern South Carolina, from April 21st through 29th. This is the fifth year for the art competition, but the stakes are higher than ever with $120,000 in cash prizes up for grabs. Artists from 12 southeastern states, with dozens hailing from the cities of Charlotte and Atlanta, have been invited to compete and have their works judged by art professionals.

UPTOWN_artfields3

The event will transform historic downtown Lake City into a town-wide art gallery, with many events catering to spectators, who also have the opportunity to vote for their favorite works in the People’s Choice Awards. There will be approximately 400 works of art featured in more than 40 cafes, art galleries, and other venues.

ArtFields has recently received the following accolades: The Southeast Tourism Society Award 2017 and the Charles A. Bundy Award, which is given to the attraction, destination, or development that helps rural communities reach their tourism potential.

UPTOWN_artfields2

Here are the events that you’ll definitely want to experience while celebrating ArtFields:

  • Getting to know the artists from these diverse locales is an important aspect of the competition. One feature is the new Salon Conversations, dialogue between established artists discussing various topics within the art industry today. Returning for a second year is Lunchtime Crunchtime, featuring 40 competition artists speaking about their craft for three minutes apiece. Both “networking” events take place in the Bean Market just across from the Village Green.
  • ArtFields is taking it to the street this year, by combining area college and university students’ talents with a universally beloved pastime: miniature golf. Collegiate artists will create putt-putt holes throughout downtown Lake City. These fun, inventive, and functional works of art will mirror the imaginative themes found in a number of the festival’s featured venues, and attendees can play through at their leisure.
  • Attendees can do more than look, they can also create. Artist instructors will lead hands-on arts and crafts stations as part of the ArtMakers program on April 29, from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Visitors can peruse the artisan handmade goods and explore downtown at the Makers Market; once a one-day affair, the market will be extended to two days this year in response to demand.
  • ArtWalks also engage, allowing attendees to choose either docent-led educational strolls through competition venues or opting for self-guided experiences.
  • Live music will be performed throughout the district at various times during the nine-day festival, and at the Village Green on weekend evenings.
  • On April 27th, experience a culinary and musical experience like no other — the Dandelion Gala. Enjoy food created by Chef Tasha Mac, the season 13 winner of the Fox reality show Hell’s Kitchen. Guests are encouraged to dress in all white to transform the room into a field of flowing dandelion buds while listening and dancing to the music of violinist Daniel D.
  • April 29th is finale night. Come out and celebrate the 2017 Competition Artists and the winners. The night will be filled with good food, “Air Art,” and the Gulf Coast soul (live musical performance) of The Suffers from Houston, Texas.
  • Be on the lookout for tickets to additional festival events.

UPTOWN_artfields5

Here’s where you should stay during your spring renewal brought on by ArtFields and its talented artists:

The time to book is now because rooms will fill up quickly. However, Lake City is positioned rather close to other cities in South Carolina: Florence (24 miles away), Myrtle Beach (61 miles away), Columbia (80 miles away), and Charleston (89 miles away).

Weekday Distraction: Snoop Dogg Shoots ‘Clown-in-Chief Ron Klump’ in New Video

$

Snoop Dogg‘s latest video is causing quite a controversy because it depicts the living rap legend “shooting” an orange-faced clown named Ronald Klump, who is dressed like the 45th president of the United States.

In addition to addressing the disappointment with the person leading our country, the “Lavender” (Nightfall Remix) ft. Kaytranada & Snoop Dogg video also addresses the hot-button issue of police shootings. The Jesse Wellens and James DeFina-directed video also stars Michael Rapaport as one of several clowns.

Klump appears at the “Clown House” to deliver the news that he wants to “deport all doggs,” according to the mock news briefing ticker.

Later, Snoop is seen firing a fake pistol at Klump as he stands with his hands raised. At the end of the video, Klump is in chains.

The rapper told Billboard that he has issues with the new president, including his election and proposed travel bans:

“The ban that this motherf–ker tried to put up; him winning the presidency; police being able to kill motherf–kers and get away with it; people being in jail for weed for 20, 30 years and motherf–kers that’s not black on the streets making money off of it — but if you got color or ethnicity connected to your name, you’ve been wrongfully accused or locked up for it, and then you watching people not of color position themselves to get millions and billions off of it. It’s a lot of clown sh-t going on that we could just sit and talk on the phone all day about, but it’s a few issues that we really wanted to lock into [for the video] like police, the president and just life in general.”

At least one member of Congress has taken issue with the satire video. Sen. Marc Rubio has compared the mock execution of Ron Klump to real presidents who’ve been assassinated.

“We’ve had presidents assassinated before in this country, so anything like that is something people should be really careful about,” Rubio said. “I think people can disagree on policy, but we’ve got to be careful about that kind of thing because the wrong person sees that and gets the wrong idea and you could have a real problem.”

The single is a remix of a track by BADBADNOTGOOD and Kaytranada.

In honor of the Academy Awards, GBK Productions, the luxury lifestyle and special events company, held its annual pre-Oscars gifting suite. This time they took it up a notch by hosting the lounge at an ultra-lavish $25 million estate perched high up in Beverly Hills.

The setting was a perfect fit to celebrate Viola Davis on her win for Best Supporting Actress for Fences, Barry Jenkins for Best Picture Director for Moonlight, La La Land composer Justin Hurwitz, as well as OJ: Made in America producer Ezra Edelman.

Other notable celebrity attendees included music producer Randy Jackson, actor Anthony Anderson, actor Miles Teller, and comedian Tommy Chong.

To match the lux atmosphere Burke Williams Spa was on-hand giving on the spot massages to guests, as well as gift certificates to visit their locations for a relaxing spa day and blow out. Pixels, a global marketplace for artists; photographers; and brands, gifted certificates to order cool items from their site, along with a stylish printed weekend bag.

Hallmark Signature, the classic premium lifestyle brand, gifted a sample of its trendy yet upscale cards that are guaranteed to leave a lasting impression.

One of the brands that really got our attention was Snarky Tea, which had a unique way of branding its tea products with eye-catching names. Guests took home a variety of tea cans with names like “Wake the F**k Up,” all the way to “Calm the F**k Down.” Not the norm, but I must say the teas smelled amazing!

Like always, GBK gave back by helping charities in need. The two causes they supported this year were the Sugar Ray Leonard Foundation, which is committed to funding research and creating awareness for children type 1 & 2 diabetes and to help children lead healthier lives through diet and exercise. Another incredible cause, Reach Up Reach Out, a non-profit that provides opportunities to partner in bringing Ugandan orphans and widows the help that they need for a better future.

Save the Bees!

“If the bee disappeared off the face of the Earth, man would only have four years left to live.” — Albert Einstein

As someone who has a fairly new respect for bees and all that they do for humankind, I feel that it is my duty to educate those who may be naive about the state of bees. Most people’s first thought about bees is not warm and fuzzy, but when you find out how vital these little creatures are, you might rethink your attitude towards them. Bees, along with other pollinators, are responsible for pollinating one-third of the world’s crops. Think about that: that’s one in every three bites of food. However, bees are dying at an alarming rate. In the “Honey Bee-Ware” episode of Inside Man, Morgan Spurlock looks into a frightening new trend: the declining bee population. Since the 1940s, honeybee colonies have decreased from 5 million to 2.5 million. Researchers say there could be many reasons for the decline: everything from parasites and bacteria to an overuse of unsafe pesticides. A particular type of insecticide known as neonics are particularly dangerous to bee health and are widely used still, both commercially and in people’s yards.

UPTOWN_brett_wright_lomar_farms

Brett Wright

But what besides becoming a beekeeper can one do to help the declining bee population? Well, according to SaveTheBees.org, here is a list of bee-friendly things you can do:

  • Say no to pesticides (insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides).
  • Plant native wildflowers and flowering shrubs and trees in your backyards, communities, and workplaces.
  • If you have room, trees such as apples, pears, plums, and cherries (and shrubs like blueberries) are excellent food sources for pollinators, as are many vegetables and herbs.
  • Even small balcony gardens and hanging baskets can help bees!
  • If you have a lawn, stop mowing a portion of it. You’d be surprised what flowers will grow in overtime!
  • Sow clover (white clover may even be mowed at highest setting).
  • Let dandelions live! They’re one of the first pollen-rich sources to spring up, and also one of the last to go. Their pollen and nectar are especially accessible to a great diversity of bee species throughout the year.
  • Grow some of your own food! Flowering vegetables, fruits, and herbs make for excellent variety in pollinator diets.
  • Support smaller, local, organic farms. Organic farms support higher-biodiversity and better bee health.
  • If you love honey, buy from local beekeepers. European honey bees are just one of around 25,000 species of bees worldwide.
  • Provide homes for native bees (bee blocks for mason, leaf cutter, and other wood-cavity nesting solitary bees, and bare sunny soil for mining, sweat, and other ground-dwelling solitary bees).
  • Provide a source of damp soil in early spring (needed by mason bees), and offer a shallow dish of water with pebbles in summer.
  • Support current bills and other pollinator initiatives, learn more about the issues facing pollinators, and spread the word to those around you!

“Life is not against me. Life is absolutely on my side.” — Michael Bernard Beckwith

Imagine that …

Everything that happens is for your good. Is it hard to wrap your mind around that? I must admit, some days this concept is completely foreign to me. I am lost in the world of mundane
to-do lists, stressing over the kids’ activities, cleaning house, and paying bills. Before long, though, my spirit calls. I am drawn to certain books, places, people, and they give me the message to return to love. To return to my passion. To remind me that life is absolutely on
my side.

UPTOWN_egypt16

Anita Kopacz and Rev. Michael Bernard Beckwith at Abu Simbel

I spent several days in the deserts of Egypt with my most profound spiritual teacher, Michael Bernard Beckwith. Every single day, I was gently pushed to remember who I really am. As I gazed upon the magnificent structures, the pyramids, temples, birthing chambers, and goddess sanctuaries, I was encouraged to look upon them as if I were a part of the energy that created them. The excellence, the precise execution of artistic genius, the devotion, the mastery. I was to look upon these wonders as if
they were my mirrors.

That little voice inside of me that usually barks, “You’re not good enough!” was silenced. My stories of lack, of unfairness, of being molested and mistreated, all burned away in the heat of this arid land, as I was constantly reminded by everyone around me that I am a queen. The desert fire initiated me into my greatness. It reminded me that regardless of how hot the fire, life is not against me. Life is absolutely on my side.

Rev. Beckwith, Akili Beckwith, Rev. Cheryl Ward, and Josephine Keita so graciously led our group through the land of Khemet. Each day a new adventure awaited us, from meditating in the Pyramid of Giza to flying a hot air balloon over the Nile River. Come with me as we travel through the ancient civilization of Egypt and remember who we truly are.

DAY 1

At dawn we travel to Cheop’s Pyramid, one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World, the Sphinx, and Valley Temple. Built over 35 centuries ago, the towering pyramid stands majestically on a desert plateau with two slightly smaller pyramids erected to preserve their bodies and treasures for the afterlife. East of the Great Pyramid is the Solar Boat Museum, housing the spectacular funerary boats placed at the disposal of the king for his journey of Day and Night in the afterlife with the Sun God Ra. Then we proceed to the Necropolis of Sakkara, city of the Dead, to see the famous Step Pyramid of King Zoser and the Wall of Cobras. Lodging: Nile Fairmont Hotel*

UPTOWN_egypt10

Boat on the river

We woke up at 3 a.m. in order to arrive at the pyramids before they opened. As the bus slowly made its way up the dirt road, the majestic structures revealed themselves on the
horizon. I could hardly contain my excitement as we drew near. Rev. Beckwith led us into the main pyramid like an exodus to the Promised Land. The stonewalls arched around us as we walked through the entrance. Up ahead, I saw a few people shaking their heads refusing to continue. The walls led to an underground tunnel with a steep incline to journey deep into the belly of the pyramid. We explored the ins and outs of this ancient structure, ending up in the King’s Chamber. There, Rev. Beckwith and Akili led us in meditation. It was an epic beginning to the trip that would eventually transform my life.

DAY 2

Morning transfer to Cairo for our flight to Abu Simbel, site of the magnificent Temples of Ramses II and Queen Nefertari. This is a breathtaking experience. An engineering marvel, the great temple was moved up the hillside to save it from flooding when Aswan’s High Dam was built. Fly to Aswan and transfer to the hotel. Lodging: Aswan Moevenpick Hotel

The Temple of Rameses and Queen Nefertari were indeed breathtaking. The massive statues towered over us in all their glory. The Nubian guides ushered me to secret nooks and crannies that had sacred symbols. They would demonstrate simple rituals to do with certain hieroglyphic characters. For example, when I came across a winged sun disk, I should touch the disk then place my fingers on my third eye in the middle of my forehead, then touch the disk again, and touch my heart. This ritual keeps you connected to your intuition and feelings.

DAY 3

Aswan Nile Cruise. Transfer to your cruise ship that will be your floating hotel for the next three nights. After lunch we sail around Elephantine Island and visit men, women and children in the Nubian village. Lodging: Moevenpick Royal Lilly Ship

Before we departed for our trip to Egypt, Josephine Keita had asked us to bring an extra suitcase full of items that the Nubian children could use. I stocked up on backpacks, shoes, clothes, notebooks, diapers — the list went on. As our boat neared the harbor, beautiful Nubian women in traditional garb walked back and forth on the deck. Some were holding handmade dolls, shawls, dresses, and small statues which they were eager to sell. When they saw our suitcases full of gifts, the women did a traditional call of excitement. We brought our gifts to a small school in the middle of the village. They served us tea, water, and hibiscus juice (yum!). We did not anticipate the mayhem that would follow. The women ran into the school frantically grabbing and claiming the gifts. Amidst the chaos, a musician began to play his drums. I walked up to him and started dancing. Three Nubian women surrounded me and started to show me their moves. I was better able to process my “Black Friday” experience with the beautiful sounds of the Nubian drum.

Temple of Philae

DAY 4

Morning sightseeing includes Aswan’s High Dam, the ancient Granite Quarries, and the Temple of Philae — the temple of love, music, and dance. We sail to Kom Ombo to visit the Greco-Roman-style Temple of Sobek, the Crocodile God. Standing serenely on a hilltop, the site offers an incredible view over the Nile. Tonight we will have a Nubian, Galabeya, and Pharonic Costume Party. Lodging: Moevenpick Royal Lilly Ship

The Temple of Philae is dedicated to the goddess Isis, the wife of Osiris and mother of Horus. As I stepped foot into the temple, I instantly felt at home. Although we were not “allowed” to pray, an armed guard took me to a side room to meditate. He told me that it was a birthing room for Isis. I gathered a small group and we spoke into existence the dreams that we wanted to birth.

UPTOWN_egypt8

DAY 5

Morning visit to Edfu, an exhilarating carriage ride takes you through town to the Temple of Horus, the Falcon God. Return to your ship and sail to Luxor and Karnak Temples, a holy city of pylons, hypostyle halls, colossal statues, and obelisks built over many centuries and dedicated to the God Amon-Ra, his consort Mut, and their son, Khonsu. Lodging: Moevenpick Royal Lilly Ship.

UPTOWN_egypt1

Luxor Temple

Luxor was particularly special for me. The sphinx-lined path, goddess chamber, massive obelisks, and magnificent statues kept me in awe. There was a hieroglyph on the wall of the goddess chamber that depicted a young woman and man being held up by four women. I was reminded of how my sisters and girlfriends have supported me throughout rough times. I sat at the foot of the picture in gratitude of my journey.

UPTOWN_egypt3

Anita Kopacz in front of the Giza Pyramid Complex

DAY 6

Early morning, we visit the complex of Karnak Temple, a vast open-air museum, and the second largest ancient religious site in the world, after the Angkor Wat Temple of Cambodia. We then cross the Nile to “Thebes” Luxor’s West Bank. Sightseeing includes the Valley of the Kings and Queens, where some 64 of Egypt’s Pharaohs had their palatial resting places hewed into the sheer rock. Lodging: Luxor Achti Hotel

The sun beat down on us as we took a tram down a dusty road to the Valley of the Kings and Queens. I covered my head with a white scarf to shield me from the sun as we walked up to the tombs. The management only opens four tombs at a time because the humidity from people walking in and out of the rooms significantly deteriorates the structures. I stopped in my tracks when I walked into the first building. All of the original paint remained on the numerous hieroglyphics decorating the walls, tombs, and statues. With this reference, I was better able to imagine how the other temples might have looked 2,000 years ago.

UPTOWN_egypt2

Anita Kopacz at the Karnak Temple

DAY 7

The morning begins with a hot air balloon ride over the Nile River. Later we will meander through the once thronged Temple of Hathor, Goddess of Love. Lodging: Luxor Achti Hotel

The Temple of Hathor was magnificently well kept. We visited secret rooms that were once filled with treasures and saw an ancient sundial on the roof. Many of the sites that we visited had statues and carvings that were defaced. The Temple of Hathor was decorated with so many faces of the goddess that the invaders must have tired from defacing each depiction of her and left several for us to admire.

DAY 8

After breakfast we transfer to Hurghada by bus. Upon arrival check-in at the resort. Remainder of the day at leisure. Lodging: Moevenpick Resort Hurghada

The Red Sea … magnificent. White sand beaches and turquoise water framed the Hurghada beach resort off the coast of the Red Sea. The next few days were packed with water sports, sailing, snorkeling, parasailing, jet-skiing, and lounging at the beach.

UPTOWN_egypt6

Hieroglyphs in Abydos

Before our departure back to the U.S., we paid another visit to the Pyramid of Cheops. Rev. Beckwith, Akili, and Rev. Ward led us in prayer and meditation throughout the trip. Our final meditation took place in the King’s Chamber. Rev. Beckwith urged us once more to remember who we really are. As we sat on the stone floor, many of us felt the power of remembering our true potential. Images of the many temples, pyramids, tombs, goddess chambers, and obelisks ran through my mind. At that moment I felt that life was absolutely on my side. I felt that this journey helped me remember that my ancestors built miracles … and I am here to do the same.

‘Undisclosed’ Re-Investigates the Killing of Freddie Gray

UPTOWN_undisclosed_freddie_gray

The Undisclosed podcast is known for investigating possible wrongful convictions, but for its latest season, Rabia Choudry and three new hosts/investigators have turned their focus to the killing of Freddie Gray.

Although there have been innumerable police-involved killings of Black men and women since Gray sustained a fatal neck fracture, while in Baltimore police custody, in April 2015, his particular ordeal hasn’t been forgotten. Unlike similar incidents, Gray’s death led to the indictment of six Baltimore Police Department officers by State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby. Yet, the trials failed to deliver prosecution. The killing of Gray sparked an uprising in the city, even before the indictments were levied, with protestors calling for a full, transparent investigation and subsequent punishment. They were left dissatisfied …

Undisclosed: The Killing of Freddie Gray has reopened the case, pouring through pages upon pages of data; police reports; video; audio; and media coverage in order to reexamine “the events of April 12, 2015, the subsequent investigation by the police department, the possibility of a cover-up, and the efforts made by the State’s Attorney’s Office to seek justice,” according to a press release.

Hosts/investigators Justine Barron, Dr. Marcia Chatelain, and Amelia McDonell-Parry have joined Choudry to bring more clarity to the incidents that claimed Gray’s life. In addition, Baltimore native and author D. Watkins also hosts Undisclosed Addendum, which provides his nuanced perspective on the case along with allowing the hosts to present their perspectives in more detail.

While it’s unlikely this season of Undisclosed will lead to any punishment for the six officers allegedly involved in Gray’s death because double jeopardy is unconstitutional, that’s not the point. The bigger picture is an examination of police policing themselves, our militarized law enforcement, and corruption and deep-seated racism within police departments and State’s Attorney’s Offices across the country. No one should suffer fatal injuries from “taking a ride” in a police wagon, and we owe it to Freddie Gray to learn as much about his death as possible.

Undisclosed: The Killing of Freddie Gray premiered on on March 6th, with new episodes released every Monday at 6 p.m. The Undisclosed Addendum premiered on March 9th at 6 p.m., with new episodes released every Thursday.

Towanda Braxton: No-Holds-Barred

By Daria Fennell

If you thought Towanda Braxton was the pushover Braxton sister, think again. During this season of WE tv’s Braxton Family Values, she’s demanding the support she often gives but doesn’t receive, seeing her sisters — especially Tamar Braxton — for who they really are, and taking the time to heal from wounds of the past. Towanda is now a tour de force, a display of strength and ingenuity as a loving mother, dream-seeker, and beloved sister and daughter. She recently shared her no-holds-barred take on the upcoming season of her hit reality show, her family, her impending divorce, and her struggle to shine among a family of stars.

UPTOWN: What can UPTOWN readers expect from the new season of Braxton Family Values, that premieres Thursday, March 16, 2017?
Towanda Braxton: Girl, it’s so much realness. It’s family things that families sweep under the rug. And I think now we’re like we gotta face it. In order for us to move forward, to heal, we have to handle it and deal with it. When my father remarried 30 days after my parents got a divorce, it was devastating. We never healed from it. This season we’re trying to heal and process it so that we are really able to have a relationship with our dad no holds barred.

U: Being a fan of both of you, are you and Tamar Braxton in a good sister space right now?
TB: Yeah, You know what it is. We have created this monster. The monster is spoiling her, allowing her to feel and think she can say and do whatever she wants to other people. And not have any repercussions. And now our point is: “Listen, we have created boundaries.” Since we have created boundaries, she was kicking and screaming like, “I don’t want any boundaries.” And now it’s like, she understands, realizes, and respects this fact. She’s turning 40, so she gets it and she has a kid. We are 100 years old, you can’t be acting that anymore.

U: Do you think actually filming the show has brought your family closer together or do you feel it has torn you further apart?
TB: Well, that’s quite interesting that you asked that because Trina [Braxton] and I just spoke about this the other day. “Sissy, do you think the show has brought our family together or has it torn us apart?” And I told her, “Well, Trina, I think it has allowed us to see us for who we really are.” Money and fame don’t necessarily change a person, it reveals who that person is. Like what Dr. Maya Angelou used to say, “When a person shows you who they are, believe them.” I got to the point, before a lot of my sisters, that I started really believing that person. You’re showing me, I don’t care what you’re saying out of your mouth. You’re consistent to who you really are. I think it just revealed certain things even though we grew up with each other. And now, we have to deal it.

U: I can’t wait until the new season!
TB: Girl, it’s so good. It’s so juicy.

U: How does it feel to always be referred to as “the responsible one”? You’re always the voice of reason, I don’t care what’s going on. Everyone’s flawed. You don’t talk a lot, but when you do talk, your words really have a lot of weight behind them.
TB: I was just talking to a good friend of mine, for over 20 years, the other day. He always checks in on me. And I told him, there are times that I don’t feel like being responsible. There are times I don’t feel like being responsible for everybody. And I’m in that space right now because I’m going through my divorce. I have to concentrate on my children. And my family because I’ve been like the Rock of Gibraltar and because I’ve always taken care of stuff, they ignore what I’m going through. Just because I don’t wear things on my sleeve, doesn’t mean I’m not in pain.

U: You and Andre Carter are going through a divorce. Are you at peace with your decision?
TB: I’m so at peace … I talk about it a lot. This season is all about healing. I know there are a lot of women who are in the same situation. You’ve been with the person for so long, you become complacent. It has nothing to do with that other person. It has everything to do with you and your happiness. And sometimes, we as women, we get stuck in a situation because we feel that we’re so used to this. I don’t want to change this. We also go through a fear of the unknown.

U: Now you know what didn’t work in your marriage, what qualities do you want your next mate to possess?
TB: Just complete transparency. I think we as women, we get kind of fearful of being ourselves and being honest about our feelings. When you know that person is there for you and is in your corner, you don’t have to worry or be fearful.

UPTOWN_towanda_braxton2

U: How are your kids and what are they working on?
TB: My kids are so wonderful. I love those babies so much. I feel like the most blessed mother on Earth because I couldn’t have asked for better children, my son and my daughter. I am the only girl in the family with a girl. My brother has girls, but I’m the only girl with a girl. To whom much is given, much is required. I don’t think anyone else in my family would have the patience to deal with a girl, I’m being honest.

U: I’m so glad that they are doing well. I heard recently they did something for New York Fashion Week. Can you expound on that?
TB: They walked in the Rookie USA fashion show for fashion week. They were so excited, especially my daughter because she’s a little shy. And when she walked on that stage, baby, she woke up. She owned the stage like that’s what she is supposed to be doing. She’s 10 years old but she’s 5’3”. Brooke’s tall. And my son owned the stage. They really liked both of them. Braxton was the first one out for Hurley. I was so excited. I was screaming their names.

U: What can you tell me about your upcoming film project?
TB: I was in a movie with Carl Payne, and I played a cop. It’s called Misguided Behavior. That was a lot of fun. He was the director. Me and Carl Payne are very good friends. For him to direct and to be able to watch him in his element was amazing. It comes out in April 2017 and it was filmed in Las Vegas.

U: Towanda, I really commend your grind. You are a loving mother who fights for her dreams. Has it always been a dream of yours to be an entrepreneur? And what impressed you about the Amara Beauty Co. that made you want to partner with them for your T. Braxton line?
TB: I’ve always wanted to do things on my own. It’s cool to do things with your family, but you also have to make a mark for yourself so that you can build a legacy for your children. I absolutely love getting my nails done! That’s my favorite thing in the whole world. I love it. I don’t answer my phone. I love for my nails to look pretty. When I met with Adam Tran, he was heaven sent. He kind of fell in my lap. We met through a mutual associate. He was like, “Look Towanda, not only can you do nails, you can do hair care, you can do this. You don’t have to stop here.” I was like, “That’s amazing!” He’s just leading me and guiding me to everything that I’ve ever wanted to do and not being fearful of doing it.

U: Towanda, that’s dope. Is it already being sold? Where can people get it?
TB: It’s actually being sold right now on the professional side. We just launched it in the professional warehouses and all that good stuff. We are doing the shampoo, conditioner, and the lotion, and that’s going to be on the consumer side. We’re also going to have the nail polish on the consumer side. The gel polish line that we are going to launch is a one-step gel polish with no lamp.

U: You have a very full plate. What ways do you pamper yourself? And who are the music artists you love to play while you are relaxing?
TB: I love getting my nails done and I like a good old massage. I love listening to George Michael and Michael Jackson. I love “Everything She Wants” and “Freedom.” Eighties music makes me happy.

U: Speaking of music, will you be recording with your sisters or solo in the near future?
TB: No. We did the Christmas album together and that was like pulling hen’s teeth. We all had differences because we’re all creative. We were able to pull it together for our parents, for Mommy and Daddy. I don’t want to do it. I can and I thank God for the blessing of giving me the gift. It’s just never been me. I’m not knocking anybody who wants to do it. I only went with the grain because that was our family’s business. Acting has always been my thing. And then you miss opportunities because you’re so fixated on making sure your family is pleased. I can’t do that anymore. Sorry, not sorry.

U: This interview has been everything. Is there any special message you would like to send to your fans? And is there anything else you would like to share?
TB: One thing I would tell everybody is don’t be afraid to live. So many people are walking around afraid, worried about what people are going to say and think. And it has nothing to do with your happiness.

Be sure to tune in to the premiere of the new season of WE TV’s Braxton Family Values on Thursday, March 16th, at 9/8C. Follow Towanda Braxton on Twitter and Instagram.

“He’s not. He’s a pig who’s trying to make sure that he galvanizes as much fear as possible, particularly against Black, brown immigrants, and Muslims …

There were more killings at the hands of police this February than January and February of last year. Two hundred and 11 murders at the hands of police this year so far.”

— Jesse Williams didn’t mince words about the 45th President of the United States when a TMZ cameraman asked the actor for his thoughts on how the POTUS is handling racial injustice. The social activist and Grey’s Anatomy star also hit back with some alarming statistics when asked if the orange-hued president would do anything about police brutality. However, there have actually been 252 police-involved killings this year, not 211, reports Huffington Post. Williams is correct that January and February of 2017 have seen more police-involved deaths than any month in 2016.

Would You Rock the Camel Toe Pantie?

UPTOWN_camel_toe_pantie

If you’re a viewer of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, then you’re likely aware that camel toe has become Phaedra Parks‘s obsession of the season, replacing the donkey booty. That’s hilarious since most women try to avoid the wardrobe malfunction at all cost … But it seems Ms. Parks was just trying to bring a popular trend in the East to the A.

Women in Japan are reportedly snatching up (pun intended) camel toe panties with a silicone pad in the front that enhances their lady bits. The look is a more pronounced and plump frontal wedgie, especially when worn under sweats or yoga pants.

While we’d never shame any woman for embracing her natural curves or lack thereof, the faux over-pronouncement of the camel toe pantie is a bit obscene and obviously fake. And just so you know, we’d think the same about moose knuckle boxer briefs. Somethings should just be left to the imagination …

The St. Charles County Police Department confirmed his death on its Facebook page. The department responded to a medical emergency at Berry’s home, which is about 45 miles from St. Louis. Lifesaving measures were unsuccessful.

He was born Charles Edward Anderson Berry on Oct. 18, 1926 in St. Louis. He grew up in a segregated, middle-class neighborhood in the city. Berry listened to gospel, blues, and R&B, and some country music, reports the New York Times.

Berry is credited with creating the music genre that became known as Rock ‘n’ Roll. He “dared to swagger, crafted the guitar riff, and emphasized storytelling,” according to NPR.

The upcoming album, titled CHUCK, will be released posthumously later this year. It’s his first album since releasing Rock It in 1979. CHUCK is dedicated to his wife of 68 years, Themetta “Toddy” Berry, and will feature mostly original music.

“My darlin’ I’m growing old! I’ve worked on this record for a long time. Now I can hang up my shoes,” Berry wrote in a statement about the news, which coincided with his 90th birthday.

Many celebrities and notable people, including former Pres. Barack Obama, took to Twitter to offer their condolences on the death Chuck Berry.

LeA Robinson first got your attention planning her lavish birthday extravaganza on MTV’s My Super Sweet Sixteen, as the granddaughter of Sylvia Robinson, the founder of the iconic Sugar Hill Records. Now, she and her family are showcasing the family business for the whole world on Bravo’s First Family of Hip Hop. UPTOWN spoke with the singer and dancer on the difficulties of opening up her life to the public, what makes the reality series unique, and her upcoming music project, a much-anticipated EP titled S.A.Y. (Songs About You).

UPTOWN: Tell me how the First Family of Hip Hop came about? Were you guys interested in doing the show for a while or did someone from the network approach you?
LeA Robinson: So it first started with Darnell [Robinson], my brother. He kicked it off with my Uncle Joey. They had been trying to develop the show for probably like a year. To be honest with you, we did the pilot, I didn’t even think the show was gonna happen, and then it did happen, and then it got real. The show was in development for about a year and it was a really great bidding war between two great networks, and Bravo was super interested. We just loved their family and their team so we went with them and it’s been really amazing.

U: There are a lot of other family oriented shows out there. What makes this show different?
LR: I think our family is just different. There’s so many different types of characters in the family. What you get on camera is what you get off camera. So there’s just so many different types of just interesting characters. The dope part of the show; I love that it shows the family dynamic and it also shows that we go through things, because we do. And that’s the real part of it. I love that.

U: Are you happy with how your family is being portrayed?
LR: Um … I don’t know. It’s interesting because it’s life. There’s certain things that you really like and there’s certain things that you’re not quite fond of, but it’s just life at the end of the day, and we chose to do television and that’s making the entire family vulnerable.

U: Was it hard putting yourself out there for the world to see? This is kind of a major introduction, not only for your family, but for what you want to do as an artist.
LR: For me I’m not even gonna lie, it was very difficult because I’m just naturally a private person. I like to handle things when I handle them and just go about my life super simple, but still just being an artist and creating. It was difficult for me, that was the probably the biggest challenge of the show was to just be vulnerable and to just be. The part that I do like about it is it brought my family together. Me and my brother have really great conversation and we’re just going through the whole process together, which I like as well. This whole thing was a learning experience for everybody.

U: Has it bonded you guys more?
LR: Absolutely. Me and Darnell talk every single day. I’m checking up with him on his diabetes, and he’s checking up on me asking for me to do a feature for something. We definitely became a lot closer throughout the show and afterwards.

U: Since the show has been on have you gotten more fans? What’s their feedback on things?
LR: They love it! I’ve always had the fans since My Super Sweet 16. It’s really cool to see because they are still dedicated fans and I’m like, “Thank you, guys, you still love me!” On the music tip, there’s just so many people who support the music, and support the project, and they wanna see what’s next. The fans have definitely increased and I love the love!

U: On the music side, what are you listening to right now?
LR: I am listening to so many different types of things. My music collection is so crazy. You’ll get soundtracks from Disney, then you’ll hear heavy metal, then you’ll hear Bach. It’s a collection of really interesting, really great music. I just like music that makes me feel good. It’s my therapy.

UPTOWN_lea_robinson2

U: Who are your musical influences?
LR: I love me some Michael Jackson! That will always be a musical influence for life. My grandmother [Sylvia Robinson] of course. I just adore her, just her voice. To me she sang like how she spoke to us. It was just beautiful to hear that. I like listening to my squad. The people that I keep around me, I always listen to them.

U: I know your family is really business savvy. What are three things that you learned from them in terms of the business side?
LR: I love that you’re asking me questions that nobody has ever asked me! Three things that I have learned: From my grandmother, she showed me that you can maintain family and that you can also maintain business. She showed me that which I really respected. You can be a businesswoman and come home and still be a wife and mom. Business is fair. It’s not always pretty and people are not going to like every decision you make, but as long as everything is fair, that’s good business to me. I learned the importance of that. Being completely honest and transparent. Not to leave any gaps so people are on the same page at the same time.

U: What can we expect from your upcoming music project?
LR: You can expect honesty. The project that I’m working on is so honest and transparent. It’s my heart. People will get to know the real LeA Robinson. And I got “Hey Young Boy” out right now as my new single. The video just dropped.

U: What’s your relationship with your cousin Shanell “Lady Luck” Jones? I know you two weren’t seeing eye to eye. Would you consider working with her again musically?
LR: No, no! I love her but as far as us doing music together that will probably never happen again. But I do adore her, and I appreciate her for everything that we did when we did it.

U: Where do you see yourself in the next five years? What do you want to have?
LR: In all honesty, I just want to be happy. God goes above and beyond everything that I even say that I want, so I don’t wanna even put a path on anything. I’m just gonna let him lead the way. Whatever he blesses me with is what I get blessed with and I’m gonna be happy with.

U: What do you think is the key takeaway from the show and what do you want the fans to leave with?
LR: Just be transparent with everyone. I think that’s where the issue came with me and my cousin [Lady Luck]. The communication on her part and on my part. For my fans and supporters just be yourself and be happy and do what makes you happy always.

Keep up with LeA Robinson on Twitter and Instagram.
