Ferguson Police Chief Apologizes to Michael Brown’s Parents [VIDEO]

uptown ferguson police chief apology

Ferguson, Missouri, Police Chief Thomas Jackson apologized on Thursday to the parents of unarmed teen Michael Brown, as well as to the peaceful protesters for whom he didn’t do “enough to protect their constitutional right to protest.”

Jackson, who was dressed casually in a red polo shirt, addressed the fact that Brown’s body laid uncovered in the street for four hours. After Officer Darren Wilson fatally shot Brown, it took investigating officers four hours to remove Brown’s body from the street. Thomas claims the workers were doing “important work,” including collecting evidence.

“For any mistakes I’ve made, I take full responsibility. It’s an honor to serve the city of Ferguson and the people who live there. I look forward to working with you in the future to solve our problems, and once again, I deeply apologize to the Brown family,” he said in a video statement.

The chief also apologized to the protestors, who he admitted were mostly peaceful, but acknowledged some “had a different agenda.”

“The right of the people to peacefully assemble is what the police are here to protect. If anyone who was peacefully exercising that right is upset and angry, I feel responsible and I’m sorry,” he said.

WIZ KHALIFA

BLACC HOLLYWOOD (Rostrum/Atlantic, September)

The pop-rap star hopes to keep his career burning with his third studio album in four years. The single “We Dem Boyz” dominated the urban charts and there are rumors that both Adele and Miley Cyrus will appear on Blacc, making it his most daring offering yet.

T.I.

PAPERWORK THE MOTION PICTURE (Grand Hustle/ Columbia, September)

Any time Trouble Man’s name appears in controversy, an album typically follows. His upcoming release is a magnum opus comprised of three albums, or chapters, and a movie to round it out. T.I. is said to have recorded 750 songs for the project.

Insider_Spotlight_SR.indd

LENNY KRAVITZ

STRUT (Roxie Records, October)

After the funk stylings of 2011’s Black And White America, Lenny returns with a stripped down rock sound for his 10th studio album. Minimalism may have been the best move for this set, which he recorded while filming The Butler and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Insider_Spotlight_SR.indd

JOEY BADA$$

B4.DA.$$ (Cinematic Music Group/Pro Era, Fall)

Heralded as being the keeper of that old New York sound, this 19-year-old rap artist’s debut album, B4.Da.$$, may spark debate. The talk is that it’s the last real chance at bringing back that classic “boom bap” sound.

Insider_Spotlight_SR.indd

CHRIS BROWN

X (RCA, Fall)

After releasing a string of singles and dropping cameos on multiple hits in 2013, plans for Breezy’s new album were derailed when he was sentenced to rehab and then jail. His single “Loyal” blew up while he was away, indicating that Brown will fall back from his recent pop sound and lean right into the R&B style he began with more than a decade ago.

SMOKIE NORFUL

FOREVER YOURS (Motown Gospel, August)

The emotional first single “No Greater Love,” from Norful’s first studio album in eight years, shows us that he hasn’t missed a step and may be back to his Grammy winning ways.

Insider_Spotlight_SR.indd

JHENÉ AIKO

SOULED OUT (Def Jam, Fall)

Her 2013 EP Sail Out scored thanks to the hit single “The Worst” (yes, the “I don’t need you” song) which is still going strong on urban airwaves. Aiko is considered by some as the millennial Sade, but her long-awaited debut has had a sliding release date since January. Her ever-evolving fanbase has their fingers crossed this time around.

KEYSHIA COLE

POINT OF NO RETURN (Interscope, August)

Keyshia Cole’s fans made it clear that they prefer her music when she isn’t in a happy relationship. Now that she’s announced her plans to divorce former NBA player Daniel Gibson, Cole’s album is expected to provide more of the angst that her fans adore.

MAROON 5

V (Interscope, September)

Thanks to lead singer Adam Levine’s profi leboosting role on NBC’s The Voice, Maroon 5 nearly became an afterthought. But their new album may return them to their soul-pop prominence with longtime keyboardist Jesse Carmichael rejoining the fold.

THE GAME

YEAR OF THE WOLF (eOne, September)

After rumors of signing with rap powerhouse Cash Money Records proved false, The Game decided to release his newest compilation independently. His gangster persona softened a bit after his VH1 reality show Marrying The Game, but if his fi rst single “Bigger Than Me” is any indication, he’s still up to his name-dropping, beef-baiting ways.

U.S. to Pay Navajo Tribe $554 Million in Landmark Settlement

The Obama Administration has agreed to pay the Navajo Tribe a record $554 million dollars in a landmark settlement.

Navajo, America’s largest Indian tribe, claimed the U.S. government had mishandled its funds and natural resources for decades. Due to the settlement, the tribe has agreed to waive all lawsuits for mismanaging resources on their tribal lands, including leasing purposes for energy development, logging and mining and farming.

The settlement, which dates back as far as 50 years, marks the largest U.S. legal settlement with a single tribe, will be formally signed at a ceremony on Friday in Window Rock, Arizona, the capital of the sprawling Navajo reservation.

The deal comes over two years after the administration dished similar settlements with 41 tribes, totaling $1 billion collectively. Since then, the government has resolved breach of trust claims by nearly 40 additional tribes for more than $1.5 billion, according to a U.S. Justice Department official said.

The Navajo Nation is the most populous American Indian tribe, with more than 300,000 members, and the largest by land mass, occupying 27,000 square miles across Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.

Video: South Carolina Trooper Shoots Unarmed Black Man

n-SEAN-GROUBERT-large

A trigger happy South Carolina state trooper has been released and arrested after shooting an unarmed man following a standard traffic stop. In the video, Sean Groubert pulled over Edward Jones for violating seat belt policy. Jones got out of his car after being told to do so and things took a turn.

Groubert asks Jones for his driver’s license and when Jones turned around to retrieve it, Groubert started firing and yelling, “Get out of the car!”

Three gunshots can be heard and luckily, Jones was only hit once in the hip. Jones instantly hit the ground screaming, “I was just getting my license.”

He’s heard apologizing repetitively when he asks the officer, “Sir, why was I shot? All I did was reach for my license. I’m coming from work.” Groubert, realizing he overestimated the situation, calls for the ambulance but gives an excuse for his actions and asking if Jones had been hit.

“Well, you dove head-first back into your car,” Groubert said. “Then you jumped back out, I’m telling you to get out of your car.” Charges were filed on Wednesday and the ex-cop could face up to 20 years in prison.

After watching the video, South Carolina Department of Public Safety Director Leroy Smith called the incident “disturbing” and immediately fired Goubert on September 19th. According to WIS-TV, he pleaded not guilty and has been released on $75,000 bail. He is due in court October 24th.

Woman Brutally Beaten by CA Highway Patrolman Settles for $1.5 Million

Marlene PinnockMarlene Pinnock, the woman who was assaulted by a California Highway Patrol officer, has settled with the department for $1.5 Million. The settlement was reached on Wednesday night following months of deliberation. CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow confirmed the settlement through email.

Back in July, a motorist recorded a patrolman brutally beating a woman on the side of the highway. Pinnock, a 51-year-old grandmother who suffers from bipolar disorder, was his victim. The officer, identified as Daniel Andrew, claimed that he had tried to pull Pinnock out of harm’s way of oncoming traffic, but she resisted by pushing him.

Pinnock had been off her medication for several months when the incident occurred.

During an interview with the Associated Press, Pinnock described her fear.” He grabbed me, he threw me down, he started beating me,” she said. “I felt like he was trying to kill me, beat me to death,” she said.

While straddling Pinnock, Andrew continued to punch her in the torso as she kicked and twisted her body. Multiple drivers had called 911 to report the woman walking barefoot along the highway, but Andrew clearly handled the situation wrongly.

The video quickly went viral on the internet and drove many into outrage, regarding Pinnock’s mental illness. Her attorney hoped for justice through the settlement. “One of the things we wanted to make sure of was that she was provided for in a manner that accommodated her unique situation in life,”Caree Harper said. “And that the officer was not going to be an officer anymore and we secured those things.”

The officer agreed to resign after all was resolved. The majority of the settlement will go into a special needs trust for Pinnock.

The Most Important Thing To Know About A Man’s Sex Drive

0
0

UPTOWN_troubled_coupleI don’t have a Vine account, but every now and then I stumble across a short, 6-second video clip that makes me laugh my behind off. Last week, I saw a Vine that depicted the difference in reactions when women turn men down for sex and when men turn women down for sex. In the clip, the woman said she had a headache and the dude just sighed, rolled over, and went to sleep frustrated. However, when the man turned the woman down for sex, she immediately began aggressively interrogating him on why he wasn’t horny and then accused him of cheating. The scenario is funny on one hand because it speaks to a larger truth that is actually a serious problem in some relationships: The fact that so many women are unfamiliar with being turned down for sex by their men, that they truly don’t know what to think when it occurs. Obviously I’m not saying that all women who get turned down by their man automatically believe he’s cheating, but there’s definitely  a large gap in how women understand a man’s sex drive.

Believe it or not ladies, even the horniest of men can almost completely lose their sex drives based on the stresses that are currently impacting their lives at the time. While things like being tired and feeling under the weather are very valid reasons as well, stress or depression is the reason most men start decreasing their sexual activity with their women. It’s just unfortunate that many of us don’t feel comfortable enough in dealing with those specific emotions to bring that truth to light. Obviously no one has a perfect life and problems will always persist, but when things get especially difficult to deal with mentally and emotionally, the desire to get it in with our girl can usually be the first thing that goes.

Ladies, when a man starts turning you down for sex or you notice there’s a rapid decline in his sexual desire, don’t jump to any conclusion about his loyalty to you or your sex appeal to him. That’s usually not what it’s all about. For many grown and mature men, our sex drives are intrinsically tied to our confidence and to our ability to provide for you. Once a man experiences something traumatic in his life that drastically shakes how he feels about himself, making love will lose some of its appeal because he feels broken. When proud men lose the ability to properly provide for their woman, sexual intimacy becomes an afterthought to solving their current crisis. So when you see your man lose his sexual attentiveness, it’s not time to start snooping through his iPhone 6 or buying him a bottle of Baba Roots. It’s time to sit down with him and have a difficult, but necessary conversation about his life.

Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo Call It Quits

Is it something in the water? Another celebrity couple has now called it quits. American Idol winner Jordin Sparks and pop singer boyfriend Jason Derulo have reportedly ended their three year relationship.

It’s unclear when the couple officially broke up- they walked the red carpet together at the VMA’s just over a month ago. Sparks, 24, was also spotted supporting Derulo as he sat as guest judge on “So You Think You Can Dance” this summer.

The couple, romantically linked since September 2011, reportedly had a mutual breakup, “but they still care very deeply for each other and will remain in each other’s lives as friends,” a source told E! News.

A source also reportedly confirmed the split to Us Weekly, saying, “They are both upset. It just wasn’t working out. It was a lot of travel and hard to work with their schedules.”

Derulo, 25, was tight lipped when asked about the split on a radio interview yesterday with Big D on KDWB-FM. He commented that everything was “cool” between him and his ex, answering “yeah” to the two remaining friends.

Jeff Taylor Arrested

A Charlotte Hornets baller has been arrested for domestic violence charges. Jeffrey Taylor was arrested on Thursday after officers responded to an incident at the East Lansing Marriott at University Place around 1:00am.

The police department said in a release Thursday that the 25-year-old forward was charged with one count of domestic assault, one count of assault and one count of malicious destruction of property. Few details on the incident were released.

His bond was set at $5,000. Taylor, who played for Vanderbilt, faces over a year in jail for the misdemeanor charges.

The arrest comes only days after the NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, vowed to take a fresh look at its domestic violence procedures in the wake of the NFL’s rash of incidents.

Silver said during a Staten Island community service event that the league has been discussing with the NBA Players Association ways to further educate players and provide programs to them and their families.

Vino Adventures: Napa Surprise

uptown vino adventures

Route 29 connects Napa County’s five incorporated regions: Calistoga, Yountville, American Canyon, the town of Napa and St. Helena. It is also the path to many unexpected delights because there’s much more to this strip than just wine tastings. Step outside the ordinary with these alternative Napa adventures and find out what local somm James Darden suggests for your bucket list.

Stop by: The Spa at Napa River Inn in Napa

Bring: Your Pet Yorkie

Dog spas and pet aromatherapy we’ve heard of. Animal communicators, not so much. At the Spa at Napa River Inn, staff Animal Intuitive Barbara Martin leads 45-minute therapy sessions with owners and dogs so Guapo can explain why The Bletchley Circle is a better DVR option than any episode of the Real Housewives franchise. After spa-ing together—the Aloha Flow treatment for you, the Pampered Paws massage for him—all will be right.

Bonding can continue at Sweetie Pies, just across the parking lot, where morning buns have been a local fave for over two decades. Truthfully, the morning bun—croissant dough rolled into a spiral and dusted with cinnamon sugar—is what a cronut might be if it were baked instead of fried.

Tip: Quaint boutique properties abound. At the Westin Verasa Napa, “I guess I’ll just eat at the hotel” isn’t foodie dread with Michelin-starred La Toque.

uptown napa tamber beyStop by: Tamber Bey in Calistoga

Bring: The friend dying to try equine therapy

Tamber Bey is the only winery to offer cookie and wine pairings. Sip, bite, sip. That a buttery cookie can so drastically improve the taste of an already good red wine is mind-boggling. Fave five-by-five tasting menu pairing is the crumbly herb biscuit with hibiscus sea salt and the 2011 Deux Chevaux Vineyard Merlot, with the cherry pepper popper and 2012 Sun Chase Vineyard Pinot Noir as a close second. Sipping reds any other way becomes impossible.

As for that friend: since there’s a fully functioning 22-acre ranch and equestrian training facility, why not fellowship with the vintner’s Arabian racers? Just do not feed the horses.

uptown maisonry napaStop by: Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley in Yountville

Bring: That art collector chum looking for a 1920’s Louis Vuitton Steamer Trunk

Ma(i)sonry gallery and wine tasting room offers a tasting menu filled by the wine collective of 22 boutique vintners this marvel (housed in a former brothel) represents. Sip and enjoy as the vintage junkie meanders through the bi-level gallery area ogling antique collectibles and pricey objects d’art.

Tip: Locals love the $50 magnums of Blackbird Vineyards rosé.

Stop by: Hestan Vineyards in Yountville

Bring: The bestie with a fetish for hammered copper bowls

Hestan Vineyards’ tasting salon isn’t just a minimalist tasting room with Usher in heavy rotation. It’s also a shopping mecca for artisanal cookware, like exclusive Ruffoni designs. Leisurely sample the library wines: mostly reds but one palate-pleaser in particular, a game-changing white that’s made appearances at Obama’s private dinners. Hestan’s 2010 Chardonnay—a crisp, barely oaky number—has converted many hardcore red drinkers like me into white devotees.

Tip: Stop at nearby Finesse —Thomas Keller’s only retail store—to stock up on the heirloom seeds, cookbooks and kitchen tools he uses.

uptown st helena martin showroomStop by: Main Street in St. Helena

Bring: The shopaholic tequila lover in your life

Main Street’s ample people watching can include a small girl intently munching an English muffin from Model Bakery or observing retail therapy at Footcandy, which is full of all the Jimmy Choos your closet doesn’t need. Head to the small room in the back where racks on racks on racks of dainty frocks, Scandal-esque coats and jeans are on sale.

Besides the vintage boutiques, practically every other shop is a source for outfitting walls, curio shelves and coffee tables. The hands-down standout is interior design haven Martin Showroom. Being there is like being inside the mind of someone with a slightly warped sense of humor prone to fits of creative genius and stories to tell for each one.

Under the weight of multiple shopping bags, a tequileria is a most welcomed sight. After all, tequila is an upper and at La Condesa more than 250 types of tequila and mezcal help weary spirits soar. One citrusy Dia de Los Muertos cocktail sparks life, only to be canceled out by the food coma-inducing signature guava-chipotle carnitas sandwich. Chase it with an ounce of blanco, then pull out a map and decide where the next surprise adventure awaits along Route 29.

James Darden, a 17 year resident of Yountville and the town’s first and only black sommelier, knows wine country the way he knows, well, vino.  Here, the wine director at Nickel & Nickel Winery offers five bucket list suggestions to Napa Valley first-timers:

(1) Hike to the top of Mount St. Helena.
  • From the freestanding picnic tables you have the best 360 views of the Napa Valley. Excellent place to pop the question.
 (2) Experience an “Auberge Sunset” cocktail
  • Auberge du Soliel’s terraced bar offers a million dollar view, the sunset at this location is epic, especially with their namesake Napa cocktail.
(3) Tomato tasting at Big Ranch Farms
  • Mark the farmer has farmed exclusively for all top local restaurants. Paul Robeson has a tomato named after him. Find it, then eat it.
 (4) Taste four single vineyards World Class Cabs in Oakville, Ca.
  • Nickel and Nickel gives you a wine experience that may advance you to the rankings of Cab Connoisseur. Tastings by appointment only.
(5) Savor “French Soul food” at Yountville’s Bistro Jeanty
  • French countryside atmosphere. Try “Pigs Feet” in a terrine presented with frisee haricot verts and Dijon or Pike Quenelle dumplings paired with local sparkling rose.

The logo for Sonoma County’s Santa Rosa, CA airport, named in honor of famed Peanuts creator and long-time resident, Charles M. Schulz, is the classic image of Snoopy and the Red Baron. Plus the hub welcomes visitors with a bronze sculpture of Charlie Brown and Linus, while Lucy serves as the airport’s concierge, charging five cents for information. Fly into Los Angeles and take a daily non-stop flight to Santa Rosa on Alaska Airlines. Or, fly one of the endless options into San Francisco International Airport, located just 50 miles south, and receive something extra special: a breathtaking drive across the legendary Golden Gate Bridge.

Cork It Over

Corkhopping, a Sonoma-specific term for multiple same-day winery visits, is the best way to experience this fascinating province nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Mayacamas Mountains. Sip an amazing glass of 2010 Rouge de Noirs Sparkling Pinot Noir in underground barrel caves at Schug Carneros Estate, a German styled halftimbered winery founded in 1980. Winemaker Walter Schug, who worked with two of California’s most renowned winemakers, Julio Gallo and Joseph Phelps, is notable for creating the state’s first proprietary Bordeux-style blend, Insignia. Schug’s Pinot Noir variety is also awesome. Move on to the “winemaker’s cave” at Flanagan Vineyard, a fascinating state-of-the-art facility replete with top quality French oak barrels and a garden rivaling Paris’s Le Jardin du Luxembourg. It serves as a gorgeous backdrop for delightfully satisfying four-course meals like the black olive crusted lamb loin, with a black truffle cracked wheat and a charred radicchio, paired elegantly with Flanagan’s 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, we enjoyed. Both of these hops are part of Grape Camp, taking place every year during the harvest season (September 22–24, 2014). Hosted by the Sonoma County Winegrape Commission, this adventure reveals the region’s secret weapon: its terroir. The conditions of the land and environment under which the wine is produced are ideal for cultivating grapes. And campers can breathe, feel and touch the terroir, giving way to a greater appreciation for a palatable glass of wine. Get another hands-on experience at the beautiful Ramekins Culinary School (ramekins.com), located just steps away from Sonoma’s historic town square. Its excellent wine tastings and expert cooking classes are perfect for culinary neophytes. Prepare a delicious apple-stuffed pork loin with port wine reduction sauce for dinner and pair it with a 2012 Ravenswood Sonoma County Old Vine Zinfandel. Make a night or weekend of it and stay at the Ramekins Inn, which has comfortable oversized beds, country French antique furniture and in-room spa treatments. Head over to La Follette Wines at The Barlow—led by Greg La Follette, one of the world’s leading authorities on Pinot Noir—for a wine blending competition. The goal: to yield a more well-rounded and complex wine by enhancing aroma, texture, body and finish. After a quick session on the art and science of blending, get three carafes of red wine and create your own blend.

Eat, Stay, Love

Retreat to the Hotel Les Mars and indulge in the “5 C’s”: charm, courtesy, character, cuisine and calm. Quaint, yet alluring, the luxurious 16-room property possesses the old world charm of a French estate and is loaded with amenities that include a housemade gourmet picnic basket for two with many of their packages. In spring and summer, bicycle tour through nearby Russian River Valley. Or, if visiting in fall, stop by a winery in the Dry Creek Valley and sample one of the area’s renowned Zinfandels. Eat at Chalkboard, the hotel’s recently renovated 62-seat restaurant, known for its farm-to-table approach to casual, yet classic, dining. Chef Shane McAnelly’s ever-changing small plates menu uses high quality ingredients direct from the resto’s own three-acre garden.

Tip: Try the savory artichoke and fava bean salad, the popular—and oh so tasty—buttermilk fried quail and one of the homemade pastas, such as the cocoa rigatoni (with coffee braised pork shoulder).

Beats, Vino & Parks

“Heartistic” is Sonoma-speak for exhibiting a passionate response to the arts, which, with a range from music and film to the visual arts, there is no shortage of in the area. In late September, check out the Russian River Jazz and Blues Festival. Last year’s acts included Ledisi, Gregory Porter and legend Jeffrey Osborne. Broadway Under the Stars (), features selections from classic and popular musicals and concerts in the open-air ruins of the historic winery in Jack London State Historic Park. In the mood for Zydeco music? The Cajun Zydeco Festival is rife with the culture and tastes of southwest Louisiana.

Oklahoma Man Decapitates Coworker After Being Fired

Losing a job in today’s economy can’t be easy and when paired with mental illness, the results are a disaster. The FBI is examining an incident in Moore, OK where a newly converted Islamic man beheaded a woman and stabbed another after being fired from his job.

Although there hasn’t been evidence to prove that the situation had something to do with his new found faith, many were reminded of the recent ISIS executions.

After being notified by Vaughan Foods human resources of his termination, 30 year-old Alton Nolen rushed into the Oklahoma food plant and injured the first people he saw—one with fatal results.

oklahoma-shooting

Colleen Hufford, 54 was his first victim. “With a knife, Nolen stabbed the poor woman in the neck so hard he severed her head,” Lewis said. But the rampage did not end there.

Nolen then went after Traci Johnson and stabbed her several times with the same knife. After hearing screams, Vaughan Foods’ chief operating officer Mark Vaughan, who is also an Oklahoma reserve deputy, took matters into his own hands by shooting Nolan. “He’s a hero in this situation,” Sgt. Jeremy Lewis of the Moore Police Department said. “It could have gotten a lot worse.”

Nolen didn’t know either of the women and is expected to survive. He’s had several run in’s with the law with a rap sheet which includes assault and battery of a police officer, possession of a controlled substance and escape from detention. He is recovering in a nearby hospital and has yet to be charged.

The food plant reopened today. “We are working with authorities on this active investigation and ask that you direct your questions to local law enforcement,” Vaughn Foods said in a statement.

Ford Recalls 850,000 Cars for Airbag Malfunction

Ford has recalled over 850,000 cars and SUV’s over short circuit problems that could malfunction airbag deployment in crashes.

The recalled models include the 2013-14 Ford C-Max compact, Fusion midsize, Escape SUV and the Lincoln MKZ luxury car, all sold in North America. All models were made in Michigan.

Ford says the restraints control module in the car could short circuit, causing the air-bag warning indicator to light up. If the short circuit occurs, restraint devices including the air bags, pretensioners, and side curtains may not work in a crash.

The short circuit could also affect the car’s stability control and other systems.

Ford Motor Co. says it is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to the recall. Dealerships will replace the restraints control module at no cost.

This is the second major recall this week. Chrysler announced earlier the recall of 350,000 vehicles with possible ignition switch issues, which could also affect airbag performance.

This most recent recall brings the year’s recall total to 46 million vehicles, well over the record of 30.8 million in 2004.

Leroy Da'Von Gabriel

An Indianapolis man was arrested earlier this month after police say he dialed the wrong number and unknowingly set up a drug deal with a cop.

It all started Sept. 9 when off-duty Indiana State Trooper Daniel Criswell answered an unfamiliar number and was greeted by 19-year-old Leroy Da’Von Gabriel (pictured above) who asked, “You looking?” Authorities say Gabriel thought he was speaking with someone else.

Gabriel then asked if Criswell wanted “boy” (a slang term for heroin) in which Criswell replied, “Always.” The pair agreed on the sale of 2 grams and decided to meet up at a local gas station.

According to a news release, Criswell arrived on the scene with another officer, both in state police uniforms and driving a marked state police car. As they approached Gabriel, they saw him stuff something into his car’s middle console.

Inside the console, police said they found a small plastic bag containing drugs.

Ferguson

A Ferguson police officer was shot in the arm Saturday night after encountering two men at a community center, authorities say.

At a briefing Sunday morning, St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said the officer approached the men just after 9 p.m. because the community center was closed. As the officer approached the suspects, they ran away. Belmar said when the officer gave chase, “one of the men turned and shot,” hitting the cop in the arm.

The officer returned fire but police have “no indication” that either suspect was shot. Belmar said the officer is expected to survive.

A search for the suspects was still underway Sunday morning in Ferguson.

In a separate incident later in the evening, the St. Louis County Police Department received a call about another shooting involving an off-duty officer on Interstate 70. Authorities say the officer was driving his personal vehicle when a car pulled alongside with three suspects and the assailants began shooting.

The vehicle was struck multiple times, but the officer was not hit. He sustained minor injuries from broken glass and was treated at a local hospital.

Authorities say there is no reason to believe the two shootings were related.

In Black and White: A Racial Breakdown of the NFL

This season the NFL has been the cynosure for controversy. Will there soon be another controversy to add to the never-ending list? In particular, is the NFL doing enough to hire and retain African-Americans on and off the field? The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES) recently released their annual NFL Racial and Gender Report Card, highlighting key statistics pertaining to race/culture, hiring practices and the league’s inclusion efforts. Key findings and areas where the NFL still needs improvement:

NFL Ownership:

Currently there are no African-American NFL franchise owners. The Jacksonville Jaguars are the only NFL franchise to have a majority owner of color. Shahid Khan, a Pakistani-born American businessman, joined NFL ownership in 2012.

NFL Coaches:

There are currently four African-American head coaches: Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh Steelers), Jim Caldwell (Detroit Lions), Lovie Smith (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and Marvin Lewis (Cincinnati Bengals). African-American coaches comprise 13% of all coaching positions in the NFL. Despite the consistently low number of African-American head coaches, 9 out of the last 15 Super Bowl teams had either an African-American head coach or General Manager.

NFL General Managers:

This season the number of African-American General Managers increased to 7 from 6 in 2013.The following teams have African-American General Managers: Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Oakland Raiders, Baltimore Ravens, New York Giants and Houston Texans. Although African-American General Managers only comprise 24% of all General Manager positions in the NFL, this is the highest number of African-American General Managers the NFL has ever seen.

NFL Players:

African-American players currently comprise 67.3% of the league’s players. It is the highest percentage of African-American players since the 2003 season. The remaining racial breakdown of NFL players is: 31% Caucasian, .7% Asian/Pacific Islander, .6% Latinos and 2% International and Other. The key positions dominated by African-American players are Cornerback (97% of NFL Cornerbacks are African-American) and Wide Receivers (84% of NFL Wide Receivers are African-American). On the other hand, the key positions dominated by Caucasian players are Quarterback (82%) and Center (84%). Special teams are also primarily comprised of Caucasian players (97% in 2013 and 98% in 2012.

Lastly, it is also worth mentioning that there are very few Black head trainers. The numbers have decreased incrementally over the past five years. In 2010 there were 10 African-American head trainers and as of today, there are only 4. Also, there are still very few Black Vice Presidents, Senior Administrators and Team Physicians within the league.

First US Ebola Case Found in Dallas

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the first case of Ebola diagnosed in the United States on Tuesday. Officials said that the unidentified patient has been in isolated care at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas since Sunday.

Although there have been patients diagnosed in Africa who have been flown to the U.S. for treatment, this is the first case that has been diagnosed on American soil. It is also believed that this is the first case of this strain of ebola being diagnosed outside of West Africa

CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden said the patient was recently traveling in Liberia before returning to the U.S. on September 20th. The patient visited family upon arrival before beginning to feel sick four or five days later. It was unclear how the person became infected.

Health officials have begun tracking down family and friends who might have come in contact with the virus. However, there are no other suspected cases in Texas at this time.

Frieden said there is no risk to anyone who was traveling on the airplane with the patient because the symptoms did not appear until a few days later. The virus can only be spread through direct contact with bodily fluids and is not airborne. It is not contagious until there are symptoms. Ebola symptoms include fever, vomiting, muscle aches, and bleeding and can appear up to 21 days after exposure to the virus.

“The bottom line here is that I have no doubt we will control this importation, or this case of Ebola, so that it does not spread widely in this country,” Frieden told a news conference. “It is certainly possible that someone who had contact with this individual, a family member or other individual, could develop Ebola in the coming weeks,” he added. “But there is no doubt in my mind that we will stop it here.”

People boarding planes in the ebola outbreak zone are checked for fever prior to boarding, but this is no guarantee that an infected person won’t get through considering how long it can take for symptoms to appear. Liberia is one of the three hardest hit countries along with Guinea and Sierra Leone. The epidemic has killed over 3,000 people and there have been at least 6,500 confirmed cases.

U.S. health officials have been preparing for the possibility of an unknowingly infected passenger arriving since the summer. Health authorities have instructed hospitals on how to prevent the spread of the virus within their facilities.

Experts consider this to be the deadliest outbreak of ebola in history. Global health experts have recently warned that the virus is becoming more aggressive and urged world leaders to step up their response. The head of Doctors Without Borders told the UN last week that ebola “is winning.” The CDC also predicted that between 550,000 and 1.4 million people could be infected with the ebola virus by January.
