Bernice King Turns Over Sacred Items To MLK Estate

Bernice King MLK Estate Battle

The daughter of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King said that she has “already won the moral high ground,” and will surrender his Bible and Noble Peace Prize to the King Estate, until a final decision can be made regarding the sale of the items.

Speaking Thursday at a press conference at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Rev. Bernice King said, “I have been led by the Holy Spirit to comply with the court order.” She urged the King Estate, which is run by his two sons Martin Luther King III and Dexter King, “to do what their conscience says is right.”

Last month, the estate asked a judge to order Bernice to return the medal and Bible, which was used to inaugurate President Barack Obama for his second term, to the estate so they could continue talks with entities that want to buy or lease the items. Bernice was outvoted two to one against her brothers to sell the items. Lawyers said Bernice signed a 1995 agreement to turn over the possessions to the estate.

The judge ordered Bernice to surrender the items for safekeeping in a deposit box until he makes a ruling. She refused to give up the items causing the estate’s lawyers to sue her because the potential deals to buy or lease the items were time sensitive.

Bernice appealed to both her brothers and anyone who might consider buying the Bible and Noble Peace Prize to “leave the sacred in its sacred state.” She hasn’t spoken to her brothers since the lawsuit, but says she would be open to settlement so the family can reconcile its differences.

“To my two brothers, whom I love and respect greatly, I implore you to consider the magnitude of this moment in history and how you want your individual legacies to be defined,” she said.

Lawyers for the King Estate declined to comment on the press conference.

A final hearing will take place in September.

Does The Surfboard Position Lead To A Happy Ending?

I’ll admit it. I wanted to learn how to surf.

Like everybody in America (or planet Earth for that matter), upon hearing Beyoncé proclaim that she likes to ride her “surfboard” on “Drunk in Love,” I wondered what she could possibly talking about. So like Nancy Drew, I decided to crack this mystery. I took to the internet to figure out if Beyoncé had indeed started learning how to surf or if she was up to something else.

Within a matter of seconds, I realized Bey was not talking about the joys of riding the waves but the joy of riding Jay-z in a bathtub. I love a good bubble bath so adding sex to it just seems like a plus. I immediately texted my guy, J.

“Want to learn how to surf?” I asked saucily.

Mom Attacking Her Daughter’s Supposed Bully [VIDEO]

UPTOWN_florida_mom_beats_bully

A cell phone video of a mom attacking her daughter’s supposed bully in a middle school parking lot has led to her arrest.

Irisdaly Rios, 35, was charged with battery for attacking 12-year-old Ashley Perez in the Hialeah Middle School parking lot, in Florida.

“This girl bullies my daughter every day,” Rios said about the attack in which she slapped and punched Perez leaving the middle school student with bruises.

An eighth grader, who recorded the fight, says the incident started as an argument between the two sixth grade girls after school. The argument escalated when Rios approached Perez, and he caught the fight between the mom and the girl on camera.

Witnesses told police, Rios got out of her car and started saying she was going to hit Perez. Rio then held on to the girl’s arm before swinging. The adult and the middle school student then traded punches until, as seen in the video, another parent intervened.

Perez admitted that she and Rios’ daughter had argued in the past, but never got physical. She approached Rios’ car because she believed the mother was going to assist in resolving the issues between the classmates.

“I’ve got scratches on my back, my teeth is broken, and my head started hurting a lot,” Perez said to NBC Miami.

Perez defended herself against the attack, leaving scratches on the mom’s arm and neck.

“Everyone has to know what’s happening in school,” said Marianne Blanco, mother of the eight grader who shot the video. “We have to project love and safety for the kids. We can’t project violence. They have enough violence in video games, TV shows. They don’t need that,” said Blanco.

Hialeah Police spokesman Carl Zogby said, “Everybody loses here. We’d rather people go to the proper authorities if there’s bullying going on. Go to your school. Call the police before it gets to this point.”

UPTOWN_walmartInstead of slashing tires or scorching clothes, a Middletown, Ohio woman took revenge in a different way.

Beverly Rolston, 45, made posters of her husband having sex with her former friend, and plastered them over the local Walmart. The friend, who had engaged in a year-long affair with Rolston’s husband, worked at the Walmart. The explicit photos were in sight of children and were accompanied with “vulgar phrases” police would not disclose and the caption, “Hide your husbands!”

The mistress admits to being friends with Rolston, and her husband admitted to the affair. It’s unsure how Rolston got a hold of the pictures.

The scorned wife, who was caught on Walmart’s security footage has been charged with one count of pandering obscenities. She plead not guilty, and the case is on-going.

Although the Boston Celtics were blown out by the Golden State Warriors in Wednesday night’s game, Boston fans at the TD Garden found something else to cheer for.

UPTOWN_tupac_look_alike2A Tupac look-alike was featured on the arena’s Jumbotron and the crowd went wild, cheering and chanting, “Let’s go Tupac!” The impersonator, who has been revealed as Josh Harraway, donned the late West Coast rapper’s signature tied bandana with a white blazer. Arena operators began to blast “California Love” as the man was shown on the screen. The Tupac look-alike has been spotted at NBA games before, but the audience has never broken out in a chant in his honor before.

Elderly Man Freezes To Death After Being Locked Out Of Senior Home

UPTOWN_homer_hallumHomer Hallum tragically died in polar temperatures after being locked out of his senior home in Detroit.

Hallum, 73, exited the facility’s back door of Morton Manor, which automatically locked behind him, with no means of re-entry. The door led to a gated parking lot. Hallum did not bring his key fob or building key, leaving him stranded in a temperature of three degrees with a negative 20 wind chill.

A security guard found the elder, describing him as “stiff as a board and cold as ice, heavy cold.” Ambulances were summoned, but Hallum passed away en route to the hospital.

“He had no other choice in blistering cold, below-zero weather – all he could do is lay down and, basically, die,” says his daughter Shelia Garrison. Garrison and sister Theresa Hallum questioned the senior facility Morton Manor on how this incident could’ve happened: Was their father ever warned about using the back door or used it before? Morton Manor has not issued a statement.

Hallum will be laid to rest today in Detroit.

Upskirt Photos Illegal in Massachusetts

UPTOWN_woman_in_skirtRest assured Massachusetts ladies, the governor passed a bill today that makes upskirt photos illegal and punishable with prison time.

“The law will make the secret photographing, videotaping, or electronically surveilling of another person’s sexual or other intimate parts, whether under or around a person’s clothing or when a reasonable person would believe that the person’s intimate parts would not be visible to the public, a crime,” says a statement from Gov. Deval Patrick’s office.

The crime will be punishable by up to two and a half years in jail or a fine of up to $5,000. Sharing the photos and/or videos could lead to felony charges and a prison sentence.

Lawmakers say the previous law, which was written before the invention of cell phones, did not foresee emerging technology. The new law passed takes into account technology like smart phones and digital cameras.

The bill was swiftly passed through Massachusetts legislature in response to a public outcry, after the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled that taking “upskirt” photos was legal. In that case, Michael Robertson, 32, was accused of taking photos and video up women’s skirts on the public transit system on two occasions in 2010. Robertson was acquitted of charges as the court cited that the two women were in a public place and did not “have an expectation of privacy.”

The law aims to change the public perception that people are unsafe from peeping toms that can take photos and videos of their private parts and circulate the images online.

“We can send a message out there, to the women especially, that this type of action will not be tolerated — now will be illegal under Massachusetts law,” said Speaker Robert A. DeLeo.

Yes Chelsea Handler, You Can Sleep With A Black Man AND Be Racist

UPTOWN_chelsea_handler_oscar_tweet

Although I love comedy and firmly believes in a comedian’s right to push the boundaries of acceptability in order to generate laughs on stage, social media has presented some unique challenges for me because what constitutes a stage is changing. For example, in the past a comedian would be allowed to say whatever they feel like on stage and that wouldn’t necessarily be considered representative of that person’s views on a particular topic. But, if that comedian said something in an opinion editorial they wrote or in a serious TV interview, then their “stage” allowance would be gone and they would be playing by the same rules as the rest of us. Yet when Chelsea Handler was granted access to Huffington Post’s official Twitter page so she could live-tweet throughout Sunday’s Oscars ceremony, her tweets were hard to swallow for most regardless of whether she was being tongue-in-cheek, because most people thought she was simply being racist.

To be honest, I just thought she was making corny jokes and kept it moving. I didn’t stress myself out believing that she has a secret agenda to hate Black folks because I know the nature of comedy is simply to get attention and laughs, and sometimes the former happens without the latter. But, it’s not her tweets that disturbed me – it’s the interview she delivered afterwards to explain them that really did it for me.

UPTOWN_chelsea_handler_50_cent_rick_rossTruth be told, I DON’T think Chelsea Handler is a racist who is ready to shave her head and become a skinhead or buy fancy white sheets and become a card-carrying member of the KKK. I truly think she is just a confused white woman who believes that her increased access into the Black community gives her carte blanche to talk and act towards us, in any way she deems (in)appropriate without any necessary tact or concern for the people she may be offending. Basically, she subscribes to the notion that smashing a Black dude on Saturday night gives her a pass to “act like a Black woman” on Monday morning. This is really disturbing because Handler’s thinking that a sexual attraction to some Black men equates to her not having to be careful with her rhetoric is just, well, wrong as fuck.

As a staunch advocate of free-speech, I believe people should be allowed to say whatever they want to, but what troubles me about Handler’s mentality is that she believes her “hood pass” gives her lily-white ass far-reaching privileges that no one outside of that culture should have. If I was lucky enough to ever date Lucy Liu, it doesn’t give me a pass to make rice-dinner and bad driving jokes to all Asians, as if they all share one collective sense of humor.

Yes Chelsea Handler, you can sleep with a Black man and be racist. You can sleep with any minority and be a bigot. Being down with the swirl does not preclude your involvement in an oppressive and prejudice system.

In Toledo Bend, Texas, a newspaper listing appeared in the classifieds that has been described by DailyMail as “passive aggressive.”

The wife of Patrick Brown, Timeshia, apparently created a listing in the local newspaper congratulating her husband and his mistress after finding out about their infidelity that resulted in a pregnancy. She even mentions the mistress’s name in the listing. It reads:

“I would like to say congratulations to Shara Cormier and Patrick Brown. They are expecting a baby. Hope you both are really in love and I hope it works out. Always, Patrick’s wife, Timeshia Brown.”

Relatives and coworkers of the mistress, Shara Cormier, refused to comment on the situation. Cormier’s Facebook page reveals that she is linked to Patrick Brown, but not to his wife.

When Gambling While Drunk Goes Wrong

Mark A. Johnston is suing the Downtown Grand Las Vegas Hotel and Casino in a case that can only be described as “When Gambling While Drunk Goes Wrong.”

Johnston, who is from Ventura, California, filed a civil suit citing the casino’s negligence in refusing to stop him as he spent upwards of $500,000 during a 44-hour February visit to the casino, including a 17-hour gambling binge, reports RawStory.

The civil suit claims that he was slurring his speech, dropping chips, and unable to differentiate colors or properly play his hand. Apparently the retired car dealership owner took out four lines of credit, one worth $250,000 and another worth $100,000, during the visit. To add insult to injury, the suit also claims that the Grand Las Vegas allegedly warned the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino not to do business with him.

“I am not a sore loser. I’ve lost half a million. I’ve lost $800,000. I’ve lost a lot of money,” he was quoted as saying. “This has nothing to do with that. Obviously I can afford what I lost.” He said that the suit is less about the money and more about the fact that he felt that he was wronged by the casino’s actions – or lack thereof.

Although there was no direct comment from the Grand Las Vegas, CNN reports that the casino is under investigation by the state gaming control board, due to allowing “visibly intoxicated” customers to not only participate in gaming activity but also for giving them access to complimentary alcoholic beverages.

All of this is yet another reason not to gamble while drunk.

Mirror, Mirror: The Weight Loss Lies We Tell Ourselves

Weight loss

Courtesy of The Frisky

I blinked a couple times in disbelief, jiggling the sliding weight marker on the old school scale in the corner of the YMCA. An inch to the right or left, and it would clank down, but the weight it was balanced on couldn’t be right, could it? If I was doing the math correctly, I’d lost 13 pounds since the last time I weighed myself, two months ago.

I hadn’t been trying to lose weight, exactly. I had tried more consciously to lose a few pounds last year, getting up at 5:30 every morning to work out for an hour, but I hadn’t changed my diet much, so, to my disappointment and frustration, the scale never budged. A few months ago I decided to ditch the goal of weight loss and just start eating intuitively. I still exercised because it made me feel good, but I didn’t go crazy about it.

And now here I was, staring at proof that I was shedding pounds, and I wasn’t sure how to feel about it. I was surprised, happy, but more confused than anything: how could I have lost more than 10 pounds without really noticing? And why didn’t it feel like a more momentous occasion?

Tamar Braxton is dismissing rumors that she has been acting cheap and short changing members of her team.

Vincent Herbert has said that Tamar’s a little on the cheap side, but FunkyDineva.com reports that the Love and War singer has been accused of not paying her stylist. This comes just days after she seemingly dismissed a member of her staff via Instagram. The post in question has since been scrubbed from her page.

Supposedly, Tamar’s former stylist told Funky Dineva that Tamar got upset when asked for a contract so that their business agreement would be outlined in writing. It wasn’t clear at the time who Tamar was talking about or what they had done to upset her, but this could explain some of the wording in Tamar’s scathing Tweetgram.

MadeaTyler Perry has been slapped with yet another lawsuit.

This time around, a woman by the name of Lisa Daniels has filed papers in Georgia superior courthouse accusing the director of theft of a literary piece and/or play. The plaintiff says the documents were handwritten because she couldn’t afford the costs of filing a civil case in the court of Fulton County.

“I was the sole creator of a literary piece ‘Madea Gets a Job,’ and this literary piece was featured in the form of a Tyler Perry play,” she stated. “This play had the same title that my play had, and this play had similar themes as my play.”

Daniels is seeking no less than 40 percent of the earnings from the play.

Perry previously faced lawsuits for his work on Good Deeds and Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor.

Some fans of “Real Housewives of Atlanta” have been asking themselves when Marlo Hampton and Kenya Moore became best friends.

Their relationship seems to be at least partly to blame for putting a wedge between Marlo and former friend NeNe Leakes, and Marlo explained to Sister 2 Sister how it all started.

According to Marlo, NeNe is the one who introduced the ladies when she invited Marlo along with the “RHOA” cast to a vineyard. Marlo said she and Kenya hit it off.

“It was just good energy,” Marlo said about Kenya. “That’s when we met and I invited her to the BCBG fashion show. NeNe was coming with me originally, but she wasn’t getting into New York until the next day. While we were there at the vineyard, I said, ‘Kenya, I invited NeNe to come with me to the BCBG fashion show in New York, but if she can’t make it, can you come and join me…?’ NeNe wasn’t able to make it. I texted Kenya, and she met me there.”

Well, the Louth, Lincolnshire England man Wayne Bryson, 19, was sentenced to four months in prison last Wednesday for defiling the dog in a disgusting 30-second video and has been banned for life from being alone with any animal, according to the New York Daily News.

Bryson’s ex-girlfriend Amber Hickling, 18, was disgusted when she found the footage on his phone while searching for pictures of their child. She was so sickened that she ended their relationship and had to give away the 4-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Rudi.

Bryson told the court during trial that he had no explanation for his actions. He has since been disowned by his family and is no longer with his girlfriend.

Lesbian Couple Found Murdered Next To A Dumpster

UPTOWN_cosby_jacksonPolice are investigating the death of a Houston lesbian couple found murdered next to a dumpster in Port Bolivar, Texas, according to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.

A beer delivery man discovered the bodies of Britney Cosby and Crystal Jackson, both 24, outside of the Fisherman’s Cove store while taking out some trash Friday morning.

Police officials believe the women were killed somewhere else and dumped at the store. Early examinations for the causes of death determined the women were killed in different ways. There is not enough evidence to determine the motive for the murder or if the murders were a hate crime. Authorities are not releasing any other details of the murders since the investigation is ongoing.

The couple traveled from Houston to Galveston for Mardi Gras, according to relatives of the family. Cosby and Jackson had been living together for two years and raising Jackson’s 5-year-old daughter. Relatives became alarmed when they did not hear from the couple after Mardi Gras.

The couple’s recently purchased Kia Sorrento that they drove to Galveston is missing and may provide clues to their murders. Police and the victims’ families are urging anyone with details to come forward and call the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office tip line at 866-248-8477.

“Just come forward, just to give us closure as a family,” McDade Cosby, Britney’s sister, told ABC affiliate KTRK.

Open Letter From Judge Mathis: Uplifting Our Young Brothers

$

uptown judge greg mathis 2
By Judge Greg Mathis

I, along with my three brothers, was raised by a single mother who worked multiple jobs and sacrificed a tremendous amount for us. Despite all of her love and hard work, in my youth, I did not escape the pitfalls that commonly plague young boys growing up in low-income and single parent households. I was arrested multiple times until a Michigan judge gave me an ultimatum to either turn my life around and get my education or serve a long term prison sentence. The goodwill sentencing of that judge allowed me to change for the better and overcome seemingly insurmountable odds that my friends and I faced growing up.

I was trapped in a cycle of self-destructive behavior. It’s the same cycle that far too many of our minority brothers are stuck in today. African American males, and more recently, Latino American males are falling behind their American colleagues. The statistics are shocking. In 2008, Latino and African Americans accounted for over 58 percent of our nation’s prisons population – despite only being 25 percent of the American population.

The important question we have to answer is: How can we break the cycle of negative outcomes for minority males? Underperforming schools, crime infested neighborhoods, and unprepared parents have combined to become a recipe for disaster in the lives of young men of color. There is a moral imperative to equal the playing field for minority males, but it also makes economic sense for the long-term health of our nation to uplift young boys of color. If we invest in educating our young men instead of locking them up, or allowing them to become trapped in counterproductive lifestyles, I guarantee we will see positive results.

Take my story as an example. If the judge that sentenced me had not given me a second chance, it’s highly likely I might still be locked up at an expense of $40,000 per year to the American taxpayer. On the contrary, I was able to benefit from federal investment in my future through affirmative action programs and federal student loans to get my college degree. Through taxes and other efforts, I believe I have more than paid back the government’s investment in me. I was able to break out of the cycle of negative outcomes for young boys like myself. We must prioritize our young boys and figure out why they are failing and what changes we can make to turn this trend around.

My Brother’s Keeper represents a crucial commitment to this turnaround effort. Private foundations and philanthropists have pledged at least $200 million, in addition to the $150 million they’ve already invested, to help young minority males close the gap between them and their colleagues. This initial money will be invested in research proven methods and programs in communities that need it most. In addition, President Obama has launched a broader federal interagency task force to examine federal policies and regulations affecting minority males – changing such policies when needed. These are important steps forward that include a number of grassroots activists, faith leaders, and philanthropists determined to push the well-being of America’s minority males to the forefront of our nation’s consciousness. I believe this initiative is just a start, but that with continued investment we will see a long overdue turnaround in outcomes for young boys of color. I welcome this new initiative and look forward to the positive change it will accomplish.
