Ohio Students Face Assault Charges in Hazing Incident

University of Akron

Six students at the University of Akron are facing charges of hazing and assault after a violent initiation incident earlier this year.

Suspects Steven Miles Pitts, Rinaldo Darius Allen Jr., Jlani D. Pryce, Chauncey St. Clair Gilliam, Clive Ennin and chapter President Traevon D. Leak– all members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.– have been issued warrants for their arrests and students and staff of the university have been notified.

According to an investigative report, an anonymous source tipped off police that the 21-year-old victim had been severely beaten with a paddle and admitted to a local hospital back in January. Over a three-week period, the pledging process reportedly got so intense that the chapter president was forced to step in.

Authorities say the victim was too afraid to come forward and detail the incident.

“We are deeply disturbed and saddened when any of our students suffer harm, and we will continue to support any victims in this pending case,” the university said in a statement to WKYC News.

The suspects are expected to be arraigned soon.

My Brother’s Keeper: Damned If Obama Does, Damned If He Doesn’t

my brothers keeper

In presenting his new My Brother’s Keeper initiative, President Obama takes no real political risk. There is no opportunity for a re-election bid, his second term up in two years.  Coast is clearing, so the black president can ease it up a bit without fearing any backlash or wrath from white voters.  It keeps his solidly loyal black base happy, whether their unemployment rate is still close to double the national average or not. There could be a slice of opportunity to leverage some Democratic outreach to Latino voters so they don’t feel left out (hence, the all-encompassing messaging of “men of color” rather than “black men” to make it safe – everyone’s lumping the two together these days).

Even with the $200 million pledged in private sector money, in addition to the $150 million deposit before the announcement, this is your standard obligatory nod to Black History Month in its last week.  Day before was Treasury Secretary Jack Lew kicking off the annual Morton Meetings in remembrance of Azie Taylor Morton, first black Treasury Secretary (who knew, right?).  Nothing exactly bad about this, but it’s always good to understand the public relations and photo op value of these events and to weigh or consider any eventual impact.  There are untold numbers of federal agencies and their bosses all doing the same thing, and of course they should since a quarter of the federal workforce that is black expects them to.

Both sides of the aisle are doing it, and perhaps it’s good to see them sweating for black voter eyeballs throughout the span of one month.  Depends on how you look at it. Even the quiet Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), who is normally reticent on such topics, recently hosted a gathering of African American Senators to celebrate their legacy in the august legislative body.  In 2014, Democrats are struggling to find a resonating sweet spot to lure black voters to the polls, Republicans hoping to keep them home.  Black History Month becomes a prominent, if not very short-lived, battleground in those efforts.

My Brother’s Keeper, however, gets the most attention because of its sponsor in the White House.  And there is really no perfect way of going about this. The president will get slammed from every side, relentlessly hunted down by ideologues and passions from both his left and right.  Conservatives are already blasting him for playing racial favoritism – “what about young white men?” cries Twitter.  Others will wrongly accuse him of blowing up the federal deficit with spending on undeserving black boys – when all he’s doing is soliciting corporate sponsors for some change (they get a tax break and maybe some leniency from federal regulators in return). Some progressive black intellectuals on the left will feel it’s too little, too late. It’s a peculiar pickle he finds himself in.

To his credit, this is the first time we have seen a president insert himself so personally into the topic, much less even mention young black men as the focus of an initiative (not even the “first black president” before this “first black president,” haha).  Presidents have talked about the plight of African Americans for years, but never so specifically and daringly about the plight of black men.  ”The worst part is we’ve become numb to these statistics,” said the president during remarks at the White House, arguably offering the most candid and biting assessment of the challenges faced by young black men by a sitting president.  “We’re not surprised by them. We take them as the norm. We just assume this is an inevitable part of American life, instead of the outrage that it is.” Hard to argue with that.

Predictably, the Republican National Committee immediately dispatched its Communications Director for Black Media Orlando Watson in response.  “Young men of color face a crisis – one which President Obama has talked about the past five years but seemed uninterested in truly correcting,” grilled Watson in an email statement. “We’re glad the President is addressing this issue, but with Black and Hispanic youth unemployment at 26.2 percent and 15.5 percent, respectively, why has it taken the President more than five years to act?”

That seemed a bit rich coming from Republicans, though.  Part of the GOP schtick or sell is the notion of “color blindness,” the bootstraps philosophy of success without the whiff of preferential treatment.  Suddenly, we’re not so color blind anymore. Watson’s statement seemed like a stunning reversal on that position.  That became confusing.  Because if Republicans are somehow outraged that black unemployment is as high as it is then where’s the policy muscle to help alleviate that?  Suddenly, there’s concern where there wasn’t.  This president has been the target of much fire from his Republican rivals for either being too focused on issues that emphasize black struggle or inviting too many black celebrities to the White House.  When messaging from individual Republican politicians can’t get outrageous enough about the president’s birthplace, subtle rhetorical bombs are dropped which either question his legitimacy or liken him to some unhinged African dictator (which is what Ted Nugent really wanted to say, but instead shrouded it with references to “Nazis”).

Certainly, the president has been a bit soft on the issue for the past six years. But, that’s not so much for lack of caring as it is the political realities he’s faced with.  If he stepped out on it four years ago, would he be sitting where he is now?  And so there’s this disingenuous argument posed by his opposition that politicians shouldn’t be politicians, yet knowing that’s what politicians do. There is no perfect timing for Brother’s Keeper, only perfect optics.

Truth Is, Nobody Puts Ledisi In A Box

uptown ledisi march 2014

By Michael A. Gonzales

Even though soul mama Ledisi has been singing since she was a gospel-wailing, Digital Underground–listening kid growing up in the Bay Area, there was a brief period early in her acclaimed career when she thought about giving it all up.

“Around the time I got signed to Verve in 2007, I was feeling that I didn’t fit in,” Ledisi recounts. “When I called my mother, who is also a singer, she said, ‘I don’t want to hear it. I know you’re going through something, but you’re going to be all right.’ I wrote a song called ‘Alright,’ and it became the debut single from my album Lost & Found.”

Six years and eight Grammy nods later, Ledisi sits chilling on the couch inside Jungle City studios in New York City. After an evening filled mostly by her newest set, The Truth, for a collection of approving music journos, the charming vocalist bubbles with enthusiasm about her latest project.

“It was hard to start The Truth, but it was easy to finish once I knew what I wanted,” she reveals. “I didn’t want a lot of ballads. I wanted rhythm; I wanted up tempo; I wanted a combination of old and new school mixed with my love for Michael Jackson, Lauryn Hill and Prince.”

The exciting new album features the first single “I Blame You,” an energetic track as dynamic as it is hypnotic, which she wrote with in-demand producer Claude Kelly.

Performing the song on Beverly Bond and BET’s Black Girls Rock! this past November, the once jazzy, classical music student, clad in a tight black catsuit, showed off her new, svelte frame and dance moves, prancing in stilettos. Surprised by her high-heeled moxie, some of Ledisi’s fans were taken aback.

“I love that people have boxes for me because that means they’re paying attention,” she explains. “But as I grow, I’m not going to please everyone; and I learned that.” Showing she hasn’t strayed too far, Ledisi tagged a scat to the end of the song that would make Ella Fitzgerald proud.

While the enchanting chanteuse was influenced by an eclectic list of artists that includes Dinah Washington, the Beatles and Thelonious Monk, her most vivid memories are of her mom blasting soul singles while dancing with her reflection. “My mom was the pop star I most wanted to emulate,” she beams. “Making The Truth was about looking in the mirror. And it all goes back to that image of her.”

Although constantly touring or in the studio (last year she recorded the duet “Ain’t Gonna Miss U When U’re Gone,” with Prince), the talented songstress enjoys watching old films on Turner Classic Movies or reading in her downtime. “Right now, I’m combining the two and reading Bette Davis’ autobiography,” she says. “I love discovering how people started, what they let go of and what they’ve gone through. Bette Davis was a strong woman, and she had a lot of heart.” Based on the aural dopeness of The Truth, one could easily say the same about Ledisi.

And The Oscar Goes To… 2014 Recap

uptown_lupita_oscarwinArguably one of the most diverse Academy Awards shows in its history, the 2014 Oscars featured an unparalleled number of African American winners, presenters, nominees and attendees. A look at the history of the show would reveal that more often than not, “we” are not represented in the fullest capacity. For the first time however, a film directed by a black filmmaker (Steve McQueen of “12 Years a Slave”) won best picture and a Latino (Alfonso Cuaron of “Gravity”) took home best director. Not to mention the academy is currently being presided by it first black president.

There is no doubt that Hollywood’s “it girl” Lupita Nyong’o was the big winner of the evening. “When I’m being true to myself, I can avail myself to extraordinary things such as this. You have to allow for the impossible to be possible,” said the “12 Years” actress.

“When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every child, no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid,” she said. Nyong’o is the sixth black actress to win in the supporting actress category, following Hattie McDaniel (“Gone with the Wind”), Whoopi Goldberg (“Ghost”), Jennifer Hudson (“Dreamgirls”), Mo’Nique (“Precious”) and Octavia Spencer (“The Help”).

Presenters included Will Smith, Jamie Fox, Gabourey Sidibe, and Michael B. Jordan. In addition Chiwetel Ejiofor and Barkhad Abdi were nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.

Does Watching Porn Together Help Your Relationship?

UPTOWN_couple_laptop_bed
There is something primal and raw about porn. It either brings out the carnal erotic/sexual needs, or makes you feel like all those super cool, amazing, highly-skilled moves you have perfected throughout the years … are not that amazing after all. Women are more likely to watch porn these days, as it has pretty much integrated itself in our everyday visuals. Whether it’s a movie on Lifetime or a music video on MTV, porn and its effects on our society are everywhere. Girls dress skimpier, singers emulate sexual acts in their performances, and you cannot go to a club or bar without experiencing those chicks that pretend to be gay and make out with each other for attention. And trust me in L.A. that happens everyday in a bar or club, hell it probably happens at the mall, library, market, shoe store, school … OK, I’ll stop. Back to the topic at hand … Here is the question of the hour: Does watching porn help or hinder your relationships?

Porn can have many effects on your relationship. It can be a teaching tool, it can be a mood enhancer, it can be an inhibition breaker, it can be fun, erotic, and sexy. But porn can also put you or your partner in a perpetual state of fantasy. You may began to compare your lover to the men and women in these movies. At times you may even form an attachment to an actor and think this is how your man/woman should behave when you are intimate. And at its worse porn can become an addiction. My ex hid a porn addiction that I thankfully discovered. He would spend hours on the computer with the door closed, and he actually chose porn over being intimate with me. Here is the thing, I was not upset with him for watching it, I was upset with the addiction he formed to it.

Women do watch porn. There is a specific niche market just for women called, erotica. Let’s just be real, most women do not want to watch that hardcore, super painful looking, never in a million years scenario that men want to watch. Most women prefer the “softer side” of porn (pun intended). I see nothing wrong with using porn to learn some new tricks, enhance your mood, or open yourself up to new experiences. I do take issue with men wanting, no expecting, us to perform like porn stars in the bedroom every, single, time we sleep together.

There is the dichotomy of the “proper lady” but “dirty girl”: You must be a sexual prowess, and love to do any and everything sexually with no questions asked. But, you must also be a proper lady in public and never show that “dirty girl” side to anyone else. Instead of pushing a fantasy why not enhance your reality? Talk with your partner honestly about what you want and need to be satisfied. Comparing him or her to a paid actor does not make them feel wanted. It makes them feel like what they want or need is not important. And, that they are not who you really want!

When you are in a relationship you enjoy, and are in love with someone, that emotion opens you up more intimately. You want to please them and want to indulge their fantasy scenarios. Some women have serious reservations when it comes to watching porn and may need to be eased into feeling comfortable with it. And then there are some women (and men) who absolutely refuse to go there. There is a stigma attached to watching porn even now. I have friends who feel their man is cheating on them by watching porn, and then there are the freaky weirdos that are alone in a dark room with it on repeat all day, and give the normal Joe a bad wrap. Learning to separate reality from fantasy is an issue for many couples and women. I think as long as you and your partner discuss boundaries, wants, needs, and experiences together and without judgement, then porn can be a helpful tool (when needed) in your relationship.

NFL Network Fires Darren Sharper After Eighth Rape Charge

NFL Network Fires Darren Sharper

The NFL network fires Darren Sharper, 38, days after he surrendered to Los Angeles police for aggravated rape charges and drugging multiple women in multiple states, a spokesman confirmed to the New York Daily News.

The former New Orleans Saint worked as an analyst for the network after his football career ended. The league had previously suspended Sharper indefinitely without pay on January 18 following an arrest for drug possession. Now 24 hours after he was detained in an L.A. jail, after an arrest warrant was issued in New Orleans, the NFL network has terminated its contract with Sharper.

Sharper pleaded not guilty last Thursday to charges by Los Angeles prosecutors that he “drugged two women with spiked drinks and raped one of them in a hotel room in October, then drugged two more women and raped one of them at the same hotel in January.” He posted a $200,000 bond while awaiting trial for those charges, but turned himself in to authorities after a an arrest warrant was issued in New Orleans in connection with sex crimes there.

New Orleans authorities stated before that Sharper was under investigation for one rape charge but new information received indicates Sharper and accomplice Eric Nunez raped two women at his apartment on the same night.

The Orleans Parish District Attorney also issued a warrant for 26-year-old Nunez. The district attorney’s office arrested Nunez in connection with the rapes that occurred the night of September 23, 2013 in New Orleans. No additional details were released about the charges.

If convicted, Sharper could face life in prison for the New Orleans charges. The same day he posted bail in Los Angeles, a woman filed a sexual battery complaint against him in Miami. At this time, Sharper has been accused in five states of raping nine women and drugging 11.

Insider: 12 Years A Slave Star Lupita Nyong’o Headed For Oscar Glory

lupita nyongoLupita Nyong’o’s performance in Steve McQueen’s epic period drama 12 Years A Slave is breathtaking.

Hailing from a prominent family (her father, a former politician, is a professor at the University of Nairobi), the Mexican-born, Kenyan-raised actress portrays Patsey, a wunderkind cotton picker who attends to the “predilections and peculiarities” of her psychotic master (played by Michael Fassbender) with a power that mesmerizes and horrifies. This may be her bigscreen debut, but the emerging starlet is no stranger to film or controversy: In 2009, the former star of Shuga, (a provocative series promoting responsible sexual behavior) on MTV Base in Africa, wrote directed and produced In My Genes, a documentary on the harsh realities of living as an albino in Kenya.

On the verge of stratospheric success, Nyong’o talks costars, love and invaluable lessons.

[Originally publishes Oct. 24, 2013]

twelve-years-a-slaveOpposition: Oprah

Her performance is a tour de force that has already garnered her the New Hollywood Award at this year’s 17th annual Hollywood Film Awards (previous winners include Gabourey Sidibe and her 12 Years costar Quvenzhané Wallis). And odds makers are pitting Nyong’o against Oprah Winfrey, star of Lee Daniels’ The Butler, for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar race next year. “It was phenomenal,” says the Hampshire College and Yale School of Drama grad of the role, which she beat out 1000 other women for. “This is the material that I have dreamed of working on. And to be able to do it so soon after my training at Yale was an incredible opportunity.”

Southern (Dis)Comfort

12 Years a Slave is based on the autobiography of Solomon Northup, a highly educated, financially successful free black man (played by Chiwetal Ejiofor) from Saratoga Springs, N.Y., who is kidnapped during a visit to Washington, D.C., and sold into slavery in Louisiana in pre–Civil War United States. While in captivity, he and Patsey forge a bond that is both beautiful and brutal (Patsey’s whipping makes Denzel’s scene in Glory look pedestrian). “Chiwetel is a very sturdy actor,” says the 30-year-old. “Solomon is a comfort to Patsey and, as an actor, Chiwetel was truly a comfort to me.”

A Deeper Love

“Solomon Northup’s love for freedom and his family is what keeps him going when things get really tough,” says Nyong’o, who landed on her first major movie set back in the mid-aughts after cleverly snagging a job as Ralph Fiennes’ runner during the shooting of 2005’s The Constant Gardener in Kenya. “The institution of slavery was built on fear,” she adds, “and fear is the absence of love.”

Elegant Explorer

Her fashion sense—an as-of-yet foolproof mix of glamour and minimalistic cool—has scores of fashion editors crushing. But Nyong’o, who next stars alongside Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore in Jaume Collet-Serra’s action thriller Non-Stop, has deeper issues on her mind, and is reveling in this moment and its significance. “There was so much darkness and light in Patsey at the same time. And that was something that I was looking forward to exploring. We need to reflect on that time, face that time and accept that time in order to move forward.”

BroApp Will Text Your Girlfriend When You’re Busy

BroApp Automatically Texts Your Girlfriend

If you’re too ashamed to text your girlfriend while throwing back brews at the bar with your boys, then BroApp is for you! This $2 app will text your girlfriend (or wife) when you’re busy, which will help you avoid ridicule from your “bros.”

Tom and James, both age 29 and from Brisbane, created BroApp as a “clever relationship wingman” that automatically sends pre-programmed text messages to girlfriends and wives. The duo say the inspiration came “after they both realized they weren’t spending enough time with their girlfriends because of a long work day.”

With BroApp you choose from a list of pre-programmed text messages, select the date and time, and the app will send those messages to your baby at the phone number you enter. Afraid she will notice that the message is canned? No worries. The app allows you to program in custom messages like “Can’t wait 2 C U Bae.”

Taking extra precautions, they placed safeguards within the app. If you two have recently exchanged text messages or just gotten off the phone, the app will cancel a scheduled message. The app will also recognize when you are at her house and connected to her wifi network. After all how awkward would it be for her to read “Hey baby. Tired from work but can’t wait to see you” while you two are snuggled up on the couch watching the latest episode of “Scandal.” And if she finds the app in your phone,  a “girlfriend safety lock down” mode redirects her to a list of gifts you were “planning on buying her.”

Not everyone is buying the theory that the app will improve relationships. Wired called the app sexist and it’s “sad” that men prefer the app “rather than engage in a genuinely loving, spontaneous or thoughtful manner.” I mean how hard could it be to type, swipe, or text-to-type a simple “I can’t wait to see you”?

The creators of the app don’t think the texts are inauthentic. Tom told “Today” he used the app on a three-month dating trial. “Personally, my partner was impressed that I would write her a message even though we were going to see each other that night,” he said. In fact, women have told them that the app has increased their communication with their husband.

For the future, Tom and James are developing a female counter app for those women always on the go or who don’t want to be the “girlfriend always texting her man” at the ladies-only brunch.

“I think when you look at these cases [like Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis], I think that they need to be more important to us [as black people]. I think that a lot of African Americans put themselves in a position where they are looking to assimilate, and I think we need to embrace our culture, and let the world know that we value our sons and our daughters. Another thing we can do is, when we’re voting we don’t just vote for president, we vote for state law on a local level, because the attorney general, state attorney, and prosecutors, make decisions [also] and we vote for them.”

– Nate Parker discusses the shooting deaths of Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis at the Non-Stop “In-Flight Experience” Screening on Feb. 25 at the Arclight Hollywood Theater. He also advises Black people to vote on the state and local levels, as well as for president. Parker plays Zack White in Non-Stop, which stars Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, and Lupita Nyong’o.

The Key To Finding Happiness

uptown happy black woman

By Wendy Credle

“Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth” – Pharrell Williams

Are you happy? If not, what are YOU going to do about it?

All of us, no matter how we define it for ourselves, want to be happy. Although many of us don’t take the time to acknowledge when we are happy, we do however usually know when we are not. There’s a heaviness that we feel. Our laugh doesn’t come as easily. We can’t find our smile.

Another thing that that we know about ourselves, whether we’re willing to admit it or not, is that we also know why we are unhappy. We may try to convince ourselves that we don’t, but I promise you, if an angel descended upon you and said, “My dear one, come to me, lay down your burden, tell me why are you so unhappy?” – my bet is that the flood gates would open. If you’re not convinced try it. Close your eyes for a minute and imagine yourself resting in the arms of the Divine. Feel the warmth, the love, the safety, and the non-judgment. Then ask yourself, ask your inner child – why you are unhappy?

My question to you, now that you have the answer, is what are YOU going to do about it? Are you going to creatively come up with ten excuses and clever justifications for why you can’t do anything about it – how it’s someone else’s fault, your parent’s fault, out of your control, society, the government? Or, are you going to use your glorious, creative spirit to come up with ten action steps you can take on your path to happiness? Happiness is a choice, and you have a choice.

Remember you are amazing!!! Take responsibility for your happiness. Stop blaming and finding excuses. Change your mind, change your perception and take action.

Black Beauty: The Intrinsic Loveliness of Lupita Nyong’o

lupita nyong'o

Social media was ablaze Sunday night when Lupita Nyong’o took home the Oscar for ‘Best Supporting Actress‘. These last few months have been a Lupita feeding frenzy, with everyone clamoring to see what she’ll wear next and proclaiming her beauty through every social media avenue available.

News outlets have also been bitten by the bug and have repeatedly remarked at how gorgeous she is. One commentary that has been markedly absent from the discourse within the media is her skin color. The various outlets will say that she’s a “goddess”  that she’s “perfect”, yet they seem to skirt around having to mention her skin. The closest they’ll come is saying that she is “radiant” or “glowing”.

On the one hand, it is refreshing to have the entire world seemingly go gaga over a black woman. It doesn’t happen nearly often enough. However, I want to challenge the mainstream media outlets to say it: her skin is flawless. And I don’t want them to say it in the context of her having no blemishes, but to acknowledge that her ebony complexion is one of the things that makes her beautiful. I want them to relish in that chocolatey goodness.

I know this seems like I’m seeking validation from mainstream media for something that we all (should) know is beautiful. But that’s far from the truth. I simply want them to stop being afraid to mention it. I’m asking that they proclaim that black is beautiful and let that sunshine sit on the shoulders of little brown children the world over. I don’t want them to pretend like they ‘don’t see color’, but rather state boldly that they see it and they marvel at its beauty.

For too long, black women have been pretty ‘in spite of’. She’s beautiful in spite of her wide nose, her full hips, her natural curls, her plump lips…her skin. Enough. We are remarkably gorgeous and our skin is a big part of that. It needs not only to be acknowledged as a part of our loveliness, but celebrated as such.

Florida State Attorney Seeks 60 Year Sentence for Marissa Alexander

uptown-marissaalexander

Marissa Alexander, whose Florida trial has gained mass media attention for the unaccepted defense of the Stand Your Ground law, has gained more publicity with news that Florida State Attorney Angela Corey is seeking three consecutive 20 year sentences as further punishment for Alexander.

Alexander, who was sentenced to 20 years already, in 2012 for entering the home of her estranged, abusive ex-husband to obtain her belongings and fired a warning shot into a wall of the home in 2010, will have another trial on July 28. Assistant State Attorney Richard Mantei, the lead prosecutor in the case, says that the office is simply following the sentencing laws of the state of Florida.

The 20 years Alexander first received was per Florida’s mandatory minimums. Last fall the conviction was thrown out because of inaccurate jury instructions.

The Free Marissa Now Mobilization Campaign  rallies support for the domestic abuse victim, resolving “to fight for Marissa Alexander’s freedom, and for the lives and freedom of all victims of domestic violence.”  The campaign wishes to have Florida legislature repeal the mandatory minimum laws and allow judge discretion over whether sentences may be served consecutively or concurrently.

A Maryland woman went into labor while being robbed at gunpoint, allegedly, by Devery Kelley (left), 24, and 44-year-old Cornell Robinson of Washington D.C. (right).

According to police, the incident occurred on Copeland Street in Annapolis at 4:30 a.m. Sunday. A man was walking the woman, who was having contractions, to her car. Then, the pair of men made the woman and her companion their target, attempting to rob them at gunpoint. A passerby saw what was happening and called police, which prompted the assailants to flee in a stolen vehicle.

Officers arrived on the scene as the suspects fled. When police caught the two, they attempted to escape on foot, throwing their weapon, a gun, to the side in the process. The gun was recovered and charges against the two men are pending, reports CBS Baltimore.

The woman was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center. Her current condition remains unknown.

This time, it’s across the globe: A Kenyan pastor has ordered all women who attend service at Lord’s Propeller Redemption Church to refrain from wearing undergarments while attending so that they can receive the spirit of Jesus Christ, according to NewsOne.

The pastor, identified as “Reverend Njohi” reportedly claimed that undergarments are not godly. Additionally, his position was that women who attend service at the church to be “free,” and that there would be “consequences” for those who do not comply.

A majority of the church’s women reportedly attended sans their unmentionables, in order to prepare for their spiritual taking.

Former electronics giant Radio Shack will be closing 1,100 of its stores after a disappointing holiday season.

Despite special sales incentives for customers, fourth quarter sales for the chain decreased 20 percent, with only $935.4 million in revenue compared to $1.2 billion last year. The chain tried to re-brand itself with a Superbowl commercial that poked fun at their outdated image, but humor did not save the day.

“Our fourth-quarter financial results were driven by a holiday season characterized by lower store traffic, intense promotional activity particularly in consumer electronics, a very soft mobility marketplace and a few operational issues,” RadioShack chief executive Joseph C. Magnacca said.

Specific stores have not been identified, but will be determined by location, financial performance, key demographic and lease duration. The number of jobs affected are still uncertain.

Despite the closings, at least 4,000 Radio Shack locations will remain open.

Obama vs. Putin on Ukraine: How Race Plays Into It

Obviously, we’d imagine that the last thing on anyone’s mind amid the high stakes geopolitical chess being played in Ukraine would be race.  Yet, one of the first things you can’t avoid arguing as Russian troops roll into the Crimean peninsula is the racial subtext.

That’s not something mainstream coverage of the event is going to waddle through, understandably.  For one, we’ve got bigger fish to fry and world wars to avoid.  The two largest players in this, the United States and Russia, each have a nearly equal amount of active nuclear weapons still pointing at each other, and no one wants any of that.  And both countries, each the most populated in their respective hemispheres, are slowly recovering from that bruising global recession while Europe – in the middle – can barely manage its own debt crisis.  At this stage, it’s questionable if the United States, as closely linked to Europe as it is, could even handle its own sanctions.

Yet, the thorny topic of race keeps injecting itself in the completely unnecessary and brazen way Russian President Vladimir Putin continues finding creative ways to poke his finger in President Barack Obama’s head.  Certainly, geopolitics “ain’t beanbag” (quoting embattled New Jersey governor Chris Christie) and the President signed on for what is arguably the bloodiest of contact sports. So, it’s a difficult proposition when raising race in this conversation; we don’t want to end up using it as a crutch to explain or excuse this particular president’s flaws or missteps since he’s not perfect – no president is.

But, it’s hard not to given the open spits of Republicans such as Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on CNN the other day who claim that “[e]very time the president goes on national television and threatens Putin or anyone like Putin, everybody’s eyes roll.”  There is quickness and relative ease in the way this is pointed out, as if the only viable option were for him to just press red buttons and blow shit up – but, if he did that, he’d be an angry apocalyptic black man.

vladimir-putin-barack-obama-creature

Every move Putin makes seems more calculated for maximum humiliating impact than it for a specific strategic outcome.  Short of war with Ukraine, it’s not like anything else he’s doing is placing him into any favorable diplomatic position: most of the countries on the old Soviet periphery either can’t stand him or are sickeningly afraid of him; he just offered NATO, the archaic treaty alliance of Western powers, an excuse to keep existing; and Obama – despite his critics – has actually made some strong symbolic shoves back by threatening to snatch Russia’s seat at the G-8 table and canceling all joint U.S. and Russian Federation military exercises.

Putin can’t resist the temptation to flashback to glory days of gold hammers and sickles on red flags.  That continues to drive and cloud his judgment in a number of ways, notwithstanding a Russian public that is both nostalgic and jittery after centuries of war and slaughter.  Some of it, like World War II, they didn’t ask for, thus much of modern Russian muscle-flexing is really a nervous knee-jerk anytime the country gets a whiff of its borders being threatened.  We don’t know how that feels because we’ve had two massive oceans protecting us from direct invasion, so we’ve never had a Napoleon or a Hitler to deal with on the same scale as the Russians.

But, that doesn’t diminish the racial subtext playing out in every Putin move.  Still living in the age of hard power and military spectacle as the dominant form of strategic conversation, Putin appears to liken himself to Ivan Drago in Rocky IV beating the life out of fictitious black boxer and reformed Rocky franchise hero Apollo Creed.  It’s as if every step by the Russian strongman, now in his third isolated term, is carefully choreographed to not only weaken his American counterpart, but to also punch below the racial belt: his pick of Russian politician Irina Rodnina to co-light the Sochi Olympic torch, after she had tweeted a bigoted meme of the Obamas, was one such recent jab.  The history of Putin’s open distaste for Obama is now long and strangely obsessive on the part of the neo-totalitarian since we don’t find him openly disrespecting Obama predecessor George Bush in the same way.  Yet, the way in which he toys with and tests the current White House raises compelling questions: from his finger-flipping amnesty for NSA leaker Edward Snowden to his active mooning of U.S. power by shifting 16,000 troops to Crimea in clear violation of international conventions.   One could make the argument that his 2008 invasion of Georgia during Bush’s presidency proves that, perhaps, Putin is color-blind (as well as his famous groping of then Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice at a G8 summit in 2006).  But, generally speaking, Putin and Bush always showed fairly good relations when in public as opposed to the obvious constipation between the Russian president and his current African American counterpart.

That Putin’s Russia bubbles with racism and anti-Semitcism, as it’s been reported quite extensively, adds fresh levels of intrigue to the argument.  Hate crimes and open insults against people of color in Russia – particularly African immigrants – have been resurgent  for some time, without intervention or comment from Putin’s Kremlin on the subject (save the efforts of local law enforcement in mitigating it).  African soccer players routinely suffer racist chants during Russian Football Union games and there have been frequent reports of xenophobic beatings since the early 2000s.  This is a far cry from the old Soviet Union which, in its Cold War moves against Western interests in Africa, offered a free Russian higher education to aspiring African Marxists (yes, excuse the bit of flagrant tea party irony in that statement).   And beyond a recent multi-billion dollar arms deal with Egypt, Russia isn’t showing any real appetite for involvement on the African continent like its Soviet self once was, appearing to leave that role to the Chinese.

There’s always been this tough-white-dude bravado about Putin – something that clearly irks Obama in his introverted, Chicago-chiseled black cosmopolitania.  And maybe that’s not so much commentary on the possibility of Putin’s racism as it is an examination of Obama’s interactions with cowboyish white dudes who like to flash their guns and whiskey … and, now, vodka.  We’ve seen this in his inability to master effective communication with Congressional Republicans.

That the latest White House budget calls for deep troop reductions and the cancellation of weapons systems doesn’t help Obama’s cause optically (even though the U.S. military is, by far, still better equipped than its Russian or Chineses counterparts).  Neither do the teasing insults of hawkish Republicans who are always on a war footing. Still, there are many diplomatic arrows at the Obama White House’s disposal regardless of Putin’s muscular disposition.  An assessment of race in the context of this tense episode in no way reduces Obama’s 21st century “soft-power” doctrine. It merely shows that it could be a major element as both leaders move their black and white pieces.  Clearly, Putin sees his Apollo and some Republicans are crying for their Rocky Balboa.  For now, everyone will just have to shut up and settle for Tom Beck.
