A married lesbian woman, identified only by her initials A.C., was denied by a Brooklyn judge from adopting her own son. The infant boy was delivered late last year by A.C.’s wife, M.M., and both parents are listed on the birth certificate. The boy is already her son under the New York law, but the judge’s decision to refuse adoption poses risks if the family travels to states that don’t recognize gay marriage.

Legal experts said the decision could create problems if such a family got into a car accident in a state that doesn’t have gay marriage, for example. “If the child and the biological parent were injured and could not make health care decisions, then the only person who could make [decisions] would be the biological parent,” attorney Joseph Milizio said, who specializes in gay and lesbian law.

The couple wed in Connecticut in April 2011, so the infant boy is already considered their legal child, a fact Brooklyn Surrogate court judge Margarita Lopez Torres noted in her January 6 decision.

The University Of Missouri will offer its students a pop culture-themed course, English 2169, in which music’s brightest superstars Jay Z and Kanye West are its primary focus. The course, taught by Andrew Hoberek, whose background includes 20th century literature, quickly filled to capacity in the fall 2013 semester, and he’s gearing up to teach the class again for fall 2014.

The course required materials include Jay Z’s book, Decoded, and “Histories of and critical works on rap music” by Jeff Chang. The course will detail the vast similarities between the rap stars and recognized poets, infused with the history of hip-hop, and how their fame and career success changed the American dream.

Hoberek said, ”I really do think that these guys are warming up to the level of major poets, and not many people think of it in those terms … They’re very much like painters and novelists in the 20th century, moving beyond the confines of the art form’s boundaries.”

I went natural 16 years ago when the Natural Hair Movement was in its infancy. In fact, the last time I relaxed my hair was for senior prom. Back then, budding naturalistas had to know somebody who knew somebody in order to get a big chop – and I lived in New York. The woman who shorn my straight, shoulder-length tresses was named Bastet, and to me she was a goddess just like her Egyptian namesake. She had beautiful waist-length locs and a comforting aura. But even with these attributes, Bastet had to work from her son’s barber shop because that was as close as there was to a natural hair salon. (Fortunately, black men were no longer getting perms and relaxers in the ’90s.) Even though I was clearly committed to making the big chop, Bastet repeatedly asked me if I was ready to cut off all the relaxed hair. I guess she didn’t want a raging young woman screaming for her head after becoming regretful. But I did it, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

I wore my hair in palm-rolled twists at first. And when it grew a bit, I wore two-strand twists followed by a kinky Afro you may now know as a twist out. Then, when I had a decent amount of hair, my mom gave me my first real ‘Fro. I remember walking down Fordham Road in the Bronx, feeling my gravity-defying hair bouncing with every step as onlookers stared in amazement. But it wasn’t long before I got bored and my hair became dry and stressed. You see, in 2000 there wasn’t the plethora of natural hair products that are now available on the market, (Heck, I don’t even remember there being flat-irons for Black hair, then.) so I decided to get locks, as my mom and a couple of cousins had already done.

Eighteen people are suspected for their involvement in a huge high-end sex ring right before they were set to see huge dividends during Superbowl week in New York City. They were known for their “party packs” which were a combination of prostitutes and cocaine, for which they would sometimes charge upwards of $10,000.

The bust came after a nearly year-long investigation, according to New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. They discovered that the ring allegedly laundered the proceeds through front businesses including a wig wholesaler, a clothing wholesaler, a beauty supply wholesaler and a limousine service. Last year alone, the group made $3 million in credit card sales.

The ring specifically targeted wealthy customers in New York for large events, so the Superbowl would have been a big boon. The group ran numerous ads on the internet and commercials on public access television (how dumb is that?). A text blast went out last week saying “new sexy & beautiful girls R in town waiting for u.”

The girls were mostly from Korea, brought into the United States by ring members.

“Every two months they would bring in a new wave of girls and they increased the importation… because of the increase in demand that accompanies the Super Bowl,” Schneiderman told CNN’s Deborah Feyerick.

Schneiderman said authorities were identifying the sex trafficking victims “to try to get them out of this cycle of captivity, poverty and abuse.”

“This is not viewed any longer as a victimless crime,” he said. “This is viewed as something where woman are seized in their own countries, they’re blackmailed and held in captivity. This is a crime with a lot of victims. We are approaching these cases now by identifying the woman as victims, not perpetrators.”

Schneiderman said that the ring involved thousands of clients and hundreds of prostitutes. The Organized Crime Task Force and the NYPD found that the enterprise spanned Manhattan, Brooklyn, Long Island, Queens and several states. Most of the eighteen suspects have been arrested.

At this point in the series, it seems like the show should be renamed “SWV: Estranged” because these ladies are more divided on what they each want to get out of their reunion and less concerned about actually collaborating as a group.

“Look, I’m a private person, I don’t like sharing my business. It’s just something I like to do. And, I don’t even trust them,” Coko admits frankly to her flabbergasted sisters.

Back in New York, the ladies are in town on business affairs—a far cry from their previous efforts. Their first stop: the iconic Ebony magazine, the trio’s first grand scale interview in fifteen years. Editorial Director Kierna Mayo, one of the prolific voices behind Honey magazine, sat down with the ladies to discuss life, love, and maturing from their household name heyday into the grown, buxom women they are today. But things get dicey when Mayo asks the trio about their roles as showbiz mothers, which shoved a skeleton out of the bone yard of a closet that is plaguing the threesome: Coko, a mother of two boys—Jazz, 17, and Jalen, 10, with husband-musician Mike Clemons—hasn’t seen or spoken to her eldest son in months, to the disbelief of her ‘sisters’ and Mayo. Lelee and Taj, Jazz’s Godmother, have no idea that he’s gone. Surprise?

“It’s hard to birth someone that hates you,” Coko says tearfully. But Mayo, like a cave miner, digs deeper. What happened to these women who were once best friends? Why can’t Coko trust the women who know her best?

“The industry happened,” Leelee accounts. “We were young at that time. We didn’t have guidance. We listened to people and we listened to a lot of people and we listened to the wrong people and we allowed it to destroy us.”

“So what is the tie that binds?” Mayo inquires. “The music. The stage is like a second home. We are better together than we are apart,” Taj answers. Are they? Not even a breath of air escapes either of the women before it’s revealed that Coko is planning a gospel album in conjunction with the album SWV intends to record. Concerns about lack of focus on Coko’s part drive the lead singer to walk off and bail, just moments before a major meeting with Sony Records. Coko finally shows up… fashionably late… and then shows off her gum-snapping diva ego to new manager Jeff Robinson. To make matters worse, after the meeting, the Grammy-nominated lead singer sneaks off to a gospel-recording studio to meet with up-and-coming producer-writer R’Celious in hopes of creating material for a solo project. But her philosophy is off: “I can do what I want, because I’m Coko!”

Later that day, Jeff hired a therapist Terrie Williams as a means of conflict resolution, to speak with the women about the negative energy that is affecting the group, and each has baggage: Lelee feels jammed in the midst of tension between Coko and Taj; Taj has lost her will to want to communicate with Coko; and Coko, who admits to having a wall up, feels betrayed because she was receiving secondhand gossip from management in ‘92 at the chagrin of her sisters and has held onto that. But, should this excuse other secrets like the fact that Coko once had cancer that, after surgery, left her sterile—when she knew both of Taj’s parents had passed because of the disease by the time she was 14? Or, that she left the group without much as a post-it note?

“I’m the only one that’s not married. This group was my marriage,” Lelee poured out. “All I remember is that I was staying at the Marriott hotel, I was up to my last $200, and when I got that invoice that means ‘this was your last night,’ I was going to end it.” (It’s okay, you can cry now.)

The meeting was a breakthrough for the ladies who are, at least for the moment, on their way to being the power trio they’ve always wanted. This left Coko with one more task, to smooth things over with Cory who was demoted to road manager, before Cory and the trio met with Jeff Robinson to discuss working as a team. After a shaky start, the meeting was a success and the women were off to Gig It to perform alongside rising stars Elle Varner, 2 Chainz, French Montana, and rap legend Nas with special guests Flo Rida, Jamie Foxx and Ne-Yo in attendance.

The show was explosive, and the ladies were giddy with excitement, Taj more so, because her husband Eddie came to town to spend time with his wife for her birthday, and even surprised her with an intimate party on a cruise ship. Cake was eaten, and the ladies danced the night away. But in typical after-show fashion, drama ensued: Eddie was offered a new position that may or may not uproot Taj’s family from her southern home to New York City.

“SWV: Reunited” airs Thursdays at 10PM ET/PT on We TV.

Amanda Knox said Friday that she would “never willingly go back” to Italy, after the Italian justice system reversed their decision of acquittal in her murder retrial and sentenced Knox to serve 28 ½ years for murder of her English roommate Meredith Kercher.

In an exclusive interview with Robin Roberts, Knox told Good Morning America, news of the verdict “really has hit me like a train.”

Knox, who returned to Seattle after her 2009 acquittal of the murder of Kercher, refused to return to Italy for the retrial. An appeals court found Knox and her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, guilty of murder in Knox’s absence.

Sollecito remained in Italy during the retrial. After the guilty verdict was announced, officials later found him in a hotel near the Italian border with Austria and Slovenia in a search to seize his travel documents. Sollecito says he was not attempting to leave the country.

“I am frightened and saddened by this unjust verdict. Having been found innocent before, I expected better from the Italian justice system,” an emotional Knox said.

The bizarre trial has even more twists that remain to be seen. Knox has up to 90 days after the judge’s official ruling to appeal the verdict to the Italian Supreme Court. Another key question –  Will Knox face extradition to Italy to serve her 28 1/2-year sentence?

“I will never go willingly back to the place where … I’m going to fight this to the very end. It’s not right and it’s not fair,” Knox said.

Her attorney, Ted Simon, says it was too early to talk about extradition since there is still an appeals process to go through, which will probably last another year.

Kercher’s family may have to wait until spring 2015 to see a resolution to the case.

“The best we can hope for is finally bringing this whole case to a conclusion, having a conviction, and everyone can move on with their lives,” Lyle Kercher, Meredith’s brother, said.

They stated they expect to see Italian authorities make an extradition request to the United States so that Knox serves her sentence in Italy.

What do you do when you loathe your first name? You change it, of course, to something more sensual and more- fitting. That’s exactly what Sheila Ranea Crabtree of Pataskala, Ohio is doing. To replace the name given to her by her parents, Sheila wants to be addressed legally as ‘Sexy’.

The inspiration for her new name stems from none other than lingerie and beauty leader Victoria Secret, not necessarily because of the stunning supermodels or visually appealing bedroom wear. ”I figured I’m sexy because I have a lot of Victoria’s Secret, so go for it. I picked it because I thought it sounded fun,” Crabtree told the Daily News. “I’m very confident and very happy and I’m not trying to make up for anything but an ugly name.”

Sheila has gone by her middle name, Ranea, since before high school. She’d even request doctor office employees to announce her by her middle name. ”Whenever you have to fill out documents with your legal name, it just killed me,” she said.

The married woman of 21 years and mother of two daughters is currently awaiting Licking County Judge Robert Hoover to make a decision in the case.

What happens when Shakira and Rihanna team up for a new video?

If you haven’t yet seen their very touchy, feely Thursday release, be warned, it’s rather forgettable.

Can’t Remember to Forget You is 3 minutes, 29 seconds of back arches, sultry gazes, whipping of the hair, slo-mo hip rolls, hints of girl-on-girl activity and everything else you’d expect from a Shakira x Rihanna collaboration. Which is actually what’s most disappointing.

It’s all so expected.  As always, they look good doing what they do.  The production value is high.  But it’s conceptually underwhelming.  Between these ladies and their creative teams, I’ve come to expect more.  I could be the outlier though, since only 15 hours after its debut, the video is approaching 6 millions views.  Clearly, many others appreciate it.

George Zimmerman has agreed to a celebrity boxing match after his career as an artist has failed to take off. Boxing promoter Damon Feldman is organizing the March 1 fight. He plans to donate any earnings from the boxing match to an unspecified charity.

“Boxing isn’t new to me. It’s something I had picked up well before the incident, and it’s something that I liked, I enjoyed,” Zimmerman said in an interview with Radar Online.

Zimmerman, 30, noted that boxing was a hobby he had “prior to the incident.” The incident he refers to is the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman was acquitted in July 2013 of all charges.

“I was actually going to the gym for weight loss and doing boxing-type training for weight loss and a mutual friend put me in contact with Damon and provided me with an opportunity and motivation to get back in shape and continue with my weight loss goals and also be able to help a charity out,” Zimmerman said.

Upon posting the news of becoming an amateur boxer on his Twitter, he instantly received an outpouring of volunteers to join him in the ring.

Rapper The Game stepped up as the first volunteer, telling TMZ “I’d beat the F**k out of him.”

The 6’4 and 205 pound rapper The Game is known for his street brawls just as much as his rap career. His brawl with rapper Spider Loc in 2012 made the rounds and he turned Lil’ Wayne’s birthday party in a scene out of fight club.

Game who has a tattoo of Trayvon says his motivation would be to box “for the legacy of Trayvon Martin and for his family.”

“I would definitely take pleasure in it.  It’s legal, and I want to show him you can solve your disputes without a weapon,” he added.

Zimmerman is in no rush to suit up against The Game and if he’s smart he will find another opponent. He hasn’t accepted the invitation but is accepting offers at fightgeorge@hotmail.com.

A Dallas police officer has been accused of sexual assault after he forced a women to perform oral sex and have intercourse with him in exchange for her freedom.

On September 9,2013 , La’Cori Johnson, 28, pulled over two women and ran background checks on them. When he returned to the car, he told one of the women that she had a warrant out for her arrest. Allegedly, he then told the friend to leave and said to the woman, “You don’t have to go to jail if you do what I told you to do.”

The unidentified woman claimed she obeyed his requests because she was scared of being arrested. She reported the incident on October 4, 2013. Johnson was immediately placed on administrative leave and the department’s Public Integrity Unit launched an investigation.

Detectives question Johnson this past Tuesday, which led to his resignation and arrest. He was booked in Dallas County jail the same day and released the next after his bond was paid.

An elementary school in Salt Lake City, Utah has come under fire after it threw out the lunches of up to 40 kids this week because there were negative balances in their school lunch accounts. ”This situation could have and should have been handled in a different manner,” the district said in a statement posted to its Facebook page. “We apologize.”

District spokesman Jason Olsen said that the cafeteria workers could not tell which students were in debt until the lunches had already been handed out because the computer for payment is at the end of the line. According to Olsen, the lunches were thrown out because they can’t be served to another student. The children were given fruit and milk in its place.

Naturally, the parents of these students are furious.

Mother Erica Lukes told KSL she was “blindsided” when her daughter, a fifth grader, described what a school district official told her: “You don’t have any money in your account, so you can’t get lunch.”

“There were a lot of tears,” Lukes said, “and it was pretty upsetting for them.”

Lukes went on to explain that she and other parents she had spoken to had no idea that there were problems with their children’s accounts. The school claims that they sent out warnings on Monday about low balances.

“We understand the feelings of upset parents and students who say this was an embarrassing and humiliating situation,” the district said. “We again apologize and commit to working with parents in rectifying this situation and to ensuring students are never treated in this manner again.”

I just don’t understand how an adult, regardless of protocol, can see fit to snatch food out of a child’s hands. What’s most upsetting is that the food was thrown out anyway, so why not just let the child eat? Milk and fruit cannot be constituted as a substantial replacement for lunch. Children are in school for upwards of six hours. Many times there will be physical activity involved in their days, especially in elementary school. How can they think that milk and fruit would be sufficient nourishment? And what of those kids who maybe didn’t get breakfast? Regardless of the rules, those adults should be ashamed of themselves.

A year after former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin was indicted on federal corruption charges of accepting bribes related to the Hurricane Katrina disaster, he returned to New Orleans this week to begin trial.

Nagin faces 21 criminal counts that include bribery, money laundering, conspiracy and filing false tax returns. He has been accused of using his public office to accept more than $160,000 in bribes and truckloads of free granite for his family-owned business.

Jury selection began this Monday but was delayed due to the winter storm that affected southern regions. The trial resumed Thursday with opening statements, The Times-Picayune reported.

The charges stem from a federal investigation that already has resulted in several convictions or guilty pleas by former Nagin associates. Some of those associates began taking the stand Thursday to admit their roles in the corruption.

Former associate Rodney Williams alleges Nagin took payoffs to secure city contracts. The former city contractor accepted a deal with prosecutors to plead guilty in December 2012 to a conspiracy charge. The deal presumably includes his testimony against Nagin.

He took the stand as the first witness to reveal he and his partners paid $60,000 in bribes sought by the mayor to receive work from the city that eventually totaled $2.6 million. He said he is awaiting sentencing for his charges and if convicted faces up to 37 months in prison.

Nagin served two years in office and held the post when Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. He later retired to a home in the Dallas suburbs where he published books about Katrina until being indicted over a year ago.

Each bribery count carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and each wire fraud count is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

When asked about the trial Nagin stayed silent, offering only “It’s fine” when asked about a recent injury.

The Super Bowl is consistently the most watched television event in America. Aside from the fact that football is awesomely entertaining, there’s the halftime show and the commercials. Ah, the wonderful commercials! Normally, people go out of their way to avoid them, but on that glorious Sunday each year, people look forward to seeing some of the best TV ads the year has to offer. We’ve got a little sneak peek for you of a few commercials to expect this Sunday while you’re munching on wings and nachos.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I used to love “Full House.” It was a staple in my TV lineup, and I’m often nostalgic for the TV shows from that era. Well, as many of you know, Dannon Oikos yogurt uses John Stamos (Uncle Jesse) as their spokesperson. So, in this cute ad, they decide to reunite him with former co-stars Bob Saget and Dave Coulier (Danny Tanner and Uncle Joey, respectively).

Remember all the hoopla about the Cheerios ad that featured an interracial couple and their daughter? Well, Cheerios decided to send a virtual “You Mad Bro?” with their new Super Bowl ad that features the same family … and they’re having another baby. Suck on that bigots!

Very few people can resist the cuteness of a puppy. Budweiser is banking on that logic with their newest Super Bowl ad. Budweiser has a history of being one of top contenders in the commercial game, so this one is sure to be another hit. I dare you to watch it and not say “Aww.”

This is actually one of my faves. It’s a bit on the long side, but very funny. Anna Kendrick proceeds to have a monologue about being “hot,” but not “beer girl hot,” railing on Newcastle for losing funding and generally being hilarious.

Terry Crews stars in a commercial for Toyota Highlander featuring The Muppets. When their bus breaks down and he offers to help, Terry gets caught up in a groovy Muppets tune.

I, for one, am a huge fan of “Ellen.” So I don’t need much convincing to watch her commercial. But in case you do, it’s a really cute ad featuring Ellen as Goldilocks and dancing intensely. Enjoy.

The impact could mean more damage than good. It’s always important to think about how your words will impact others before you say them. The workplace is usually made up of people from various cultures, religious backgrounds and geographic regions and it’s not good for business to offend a coworker with a comment that caters to your personal opinion and experiences.

It’s never a good look to have to keep apologizing. No one wants to be put on the spot about their wrongdoings, especially in a professional setting. So rather than making a comment that will cause you to have to apologize later, just think ahead whether that comment is even worth stating.

More than a decade later, Nick Cannon has confirmed he’s delivering a second installment of Drumline for a new generation.

While visiting MTV2′s “Charlamagne & Friends,” the 33-year-old star explained:
