First Look: OWN Beefs Up Programming With ‘Houston Beauty’ [VIDEO]

Houston Beauty

With the breakout success of Tyler Perry‘s The Haves and the Have Nots, the forthcoming reality series Crazy.Sexy.Life and the newly-added unscripted show Houston Beauty, it’s clear that Oprah Winfrey‘s OWN is now aiming for a certain kind of target audience. And it’s working.

Her newest effort documents the Franklin Beauty School in Houston, TX as aspiring stylists attempt to navigate their way through difficult lessons inside and outside of the classroom. The synopsis states:

“The Jemison Family has owned and operated Franklin Beauty School for over 98 years, making it one of the oldest beauty schools in the country. They run a tight ship, but they aren’t always prepared for what will walk through their doors.

For many of their students, the stakes are high as they have major barriers to overcome in their lives. A cosmetology license would mean a whole new life for them—but only if they can overcome their personal struggles along the way. With the help of Ms. J and her staff, Franklin students are set on a path for success in both cosmetology and life.”

Last month, new reports revealed that OWN’s viewership is up 22 percent among the target audience of adult women and 23 percent compared to last year. That’s a far cry from the dismal numbers the network was putting up during its rocky start.

“I no longer have such fear and anxiety about it. I really have more confidence in my decisions,” Winfrey said. “In the beginning, I was in a lot of meetings where people said, `You don’t understand cable.’ … I’d say, `But I do understand the audience. Aren’t people the same?’”

OWN will air a sneak peek of Houston Beauty on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 10/9c ahead of the series premiere on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 10/9c. Check out the trailer below.

Fashion Week: Black Celebrities Make A Big Splash As Insiders Question Its Relevance

Chanel ImanWhen Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week rolls around in New York City, you always know.

Stylists can be seen hauling bags of garments down streets, and confused visitors look extra-gussied up in chic shoes carrying fabulous clutches instead of wandering in sandals and shorts.

But the biggest sign that we are leading into one of the hottest style times of the year is the celebrities who descend upon New York, partaking of an endless stream of parties, and of course, to take their spots in the coveted front rows of shows.

Sports stars such as Victor Cruz and Ama’re Stoudemire hit the red carpet of the 2013 Style Awards and kick-off of New York Fashion Week held at Lincoln Center on Wednesday. More low-key members of fashion’s in crowd, such as supermodel-turned-beauty-business-woman Iman and her modern-day mini-me model Chanel Iman, were spotted discreetly entering and leaving Lincoln Center.

Yet, amid all this fun and upscale frivolity, serious questions have been posed about New York Fashion Week’s fairness and relevancy.

Ohio Man Confesses To Killing

An Ohio man has stepped forward to take blame for the death of another man in a fatal wrong-way car crash due to a night of heavy drinking. Yet, he’s done so in an unconventional way– via YouTube.

Matthew Cordle, 22, posted his 3 1/2-minute confession detailing the unfortunate incident that took the life of Vincent Canzani back on June 22. In the powerful clip, he says he is fully owning up to the accident and is willing to pay the price for his thoughtless actions.

“When I get charged I’ll plead guilty and take full responsibility for everything I’ve done to Vincent and his family,” Cordle explains. He goes on to turn others away from drinking and driving.

“I can’t bring Mr. Canzani back, and I can’t erase what I’ve done, but you can still be saved. Your victims can still be saved. So, please, make the promise to never drink and drive,” he urges.

Officials say Cordle was a suspect in the deadly crash, but has not been formally charged. He will likely be indicted for aggravated vehicular homicide with an alcohol specification, which carries a maximum of eight years in prison upon conviction.

Designer to Know: Stella Jean

$

stella jeanBy Joane Amay

Rome-based designer Stella Jean’s namesake clothing line creates styles that not only boast eclectic prints, but also clash cultures. Her collections exhibit a fusion of her Caribbean heritage married with the detailed craftsmanship of her Italian homeland. “I’m half-Italian and half-Haitian. And the need to conciliate my two opposite identities and roots motivated me to start,” says Jean.

Runway Reality

As for her creations: think East African prints that enliven 1950s silhouettes and offbeat details—such as denim shirts paired with bold turbans for women and pocket squares and pens for men—enriching tailored preppy classics. Her Fall 2013/2014 womenswear line was a critical and commercial success, which is in direct correlation to both Jean’s professional and personal motto: “The only insurmountable frontiers are those of the mind.” And she may be right: legendary designer Giorgio Armani has tapped Jean to present her Spring/Summer 2014 collection at the Armani Teatro in Milan, making her the first womenswear designer to do so.

 Language & Labor

As a model, Jean, 34, became bored and frustrated with the industry and permanently left the runway in 2010. She decided that she wanted to express her own unique fashion dialect. “I wanted to create through my personal story lens a new and unexpected cultural mixture,” says Jean, “while keeping the ability to balance content and shapes.” Thus, she embarked on a journey that led to her garnering a strong finish in Vogue Italia’s prestigious Who Is On Next fashion competition in 2011, and then to her presenting her debut collection in fall 2012 during Milan Fashion Week.

 A Few Friends

Jean’s seemingly meteoric rise was helped by her stellar designs catching the eye of some of the industry’s leading international fashion tastemakers, such as street style star Taylor Tomasi-Hill, socialite and Vogue contributor Lauren Santo Domingo and Parisian expat Laure Hériard Dubreuil, to name a wellheeled few. High-end retailers like The Webster in Miami and Matches in the U.K., as well as global e-commerce site modaoperandi.com (the sponsor of this year’s venerable Met Gala) followed suit and snapped up her inaugural collection.

New -Wave Mixing

For her sophomore Fall 2013 collection and follow-up Resort 2014 collection, the designer was inspired by the opportunity to mix customs and history. “I drew inspiration from the capacity to blend and juxtapose traditions that are distant, like pre-Columbian and Mongolian civilizations or Burkinabè, Italian, and Cuban cultures.”

The XY Factor

Always up for a challenge, Jean entered the men’s arena with her Spring 2014 men’s collection, resplendent in tribal patterns, magnificent floral and fauna combos, all the while complementing the collection’s dandyish well-cut blazers, Anglo-inspired trenches and narrow cropped trousers. Jean’s cultivated pattern mélanges provided the sartorial menswear classics with a young, cool edge.

Must Watch: Hilarious New Web Series ‘Ask A Slave’

So Russell Simmons’ release of the “Harriet Tubman Sex Tape” last month was a horribly egregious excuse for comedy, but alas there is someone who knows how to make comedy out of the American slave experience that is actually funny.

Lizzie Mae is the “personal housemaid” (a.k.a. slave) of George Washington.  She’s here to answer any and all of your questions about her life in 1795 with Ask A Slave. The premise comes from actress Azie Mira Dungey who plays Lizzie Mae.  She was a “living history character” on George Washington’s plantation in Virginia and the questions are some of the actual inquiries she received from visitors to the estate.

The comedy web series is directed by comedian Jordan Black. Web series are becoming more and more popular these days and can lead to further opportunities – Comedy Central’s new show Drunk History (which is hilarious if you haven’t watched it) actually started off as a web series.  I’d be interested to see if they could convert Ask A Slave into a longer format for TV.

Check out the introductory webisode here and the most recent episode below.

The Real Reason Men Hate Women Who Make More Money

$

UPTOWN_couple_paying_bills_main

A week ago I read an article that I found to be embarrassing, yet not that surprising, titled: “Study: Men secretly feel terrible when the women they love succeed.” Just as it sounds, the article went on to explain how, according to a new study, some men are taking it as a huge blow to their egos when their significant other makes more money, so much so that many men become uninterested in continuing the relationship with her. Learning something that seemingly ridiculous makes it easy for any man or woman to go in on a dude who thinks like that, but when you look deeper below the surface, the real reason many men resent women who make more money than them is actually kinda sad.

The truth is, far too many men were taught as boys to identify their self-worth with their income. In fact, far too many men have been raised under the ideology that providing more money than their significant other is a part of being a “real man.” Hell, this ideology really hasn’t slowed down much at all, and there are little boys growing up today who are encouraged to view their income as an extension of their manhood.

I don’t want to make it appear as if I’m ignoring the misogynistic, sexist, and supremely insecure men who also might have populated that study because I know they are out there. Men like Lou Dobbs and Erick Erickson probably have some deep issues with what they were taught as children, but it’s clear they are more deeply affected by their inherent desires to see women continually subjugated. I am not trying to defend those dudes, because there truly is no defending them, but we need to stop acting like all the men who have trouble with not being the breadwinner in their households are reflective of that mindset.

UPTOWN_couple_paying_billsIt’s so funny to hear some women talk about men who react negatively to other men making the least money in their relationships, because women will shred those dudes to pieces with comments on how they are weak, simple-minded, and pathetic – yet many of the same women use those same exact words to describe men who make less than their women. There is a deep-seeded contradiction happening in our homes that no one is willing to address.

I won’t place all the blame of how we socialize young boys on parents because it’s possible for men to overcome the rigid definition of manhood that are heaped upon them. I received “the talk” from many family members, explaining that I needed to go out and find a high-paying career to support my future wife and kids, but I was able to divorce myself from feeling that my woman’s success is somehow my failure, but we also need to address women who can’t seem to do the same. I am a writer who’s dated three lawyers back-to-back, and although we both busted our asses at our respective careers, the financial rewards of each industry are obviously very different – and the women I dated were very vocal about their displeasure in that regard.

So now you have two very complexes that men are facing in today’s society, where 42 percent of women are breadwinners in their relationships, women are outpacing men in post secondary-school enrollment, and men are facing a much higher unemployment rate than women, specifically in the Black community: His ideology of self-worth vs. his fear of not being seen as a real man (especially by the woman he’s dating)

The reality is, we need to start changing the context of how we define “real manhood” to young boys out there, because using rigid traditional standards is clearly warping the minds of our young men. We need to start teaching boys that their income and their jobs may be important, but don’t define their intrinsic self-worth as men. We need to start teaching young boys that providing for a household doesn’t necessarily mean financially-dominating their significant other. And we need to start teaching young boys to revel in the success of young girls as well because, fortunately, their achievements won’t be going anywhere, anytime soon.

Holograms Of Eazy-E & ODB “Perform” At Rock The Bells

Rappers ODB and Eazy-E

Just a year after Tupac Shakur ”took the stage” at Coachella, two more fallen rappers have performed via hologram. Eazy-E, who passed away in 1995, and Ol’ Dirty Bastard, who died in 2004, made appearances at the Rock The Bells Festival in Los Angeles over the weekend for the concert series’ 10th anniversary.

Saturday night, on what would have been his 50th birthday, Eazy E appeared during Bone Thugs-n-Harmony’s set to reprise his verses on “Straight Outta Compton,” “Boyz N Da Hood,” and “Foe The Love Of $.” The following evening, ODB emerged on stage alongside his former clique, Wu-Tang Clan, to perform “Shame On A N*gga” and “Shimmy Shimmy Ya.” His son, Young Dirty Bastard, also joined him.

A hologram of Aaliyah was used in Chris Brown’s latest video for “Don’t Think They Know,” which features the late singer. And Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas has mentioned possibly using holographic images of Lisa “Lefteye” Lopes during a TLC reunion tour. These recent showings suggest that more musicians could be making posthumous performances in the future.

VMA Performance Gets Miley Axed from Vogue Cover?

$

Uptown_MileyCyrus_VMAsA few outlets are reporting that legendary Vogue editor Anna Wintour was not impressed by Miley Cyrus‘ VMA performance and has decided to pull her from the December cover. You mean, you don’t enjoy foam finger grinds, excessive tongue and frantic “twerking” Anna??

According to a source, “Anna found the whole thing distasteful. She decided, based on Cyrus’ performance, to take the cover in a different direction.” “Distasteful” is such a kind word for that performance.

Do you know how many people would kill for a Vogue cover? I can only imagine what it feels like to get one and then have it snatched away. I wonder if this will be enough to curb Cyrus’ twerking habits for good? I hope so, because ever since that damn VMA performance there have been scientific breakdowns of dances that I’ve seen since elementary school, and I don’t know if I can take one more news anchor saying “twerk” and giggling.

However, Gossip Cop is reporting that the whole story is false and Cyrus never had a Vogue cover to begin with. Either way, this debacle hasn’t seemed to do anything positive for Cyrus.

By now, I’m sure most of you have seen the hilarious viral video “Worst Twerk Fail EVER- Girl Catches On Fire!” If not, you can take a look below.

Well come to find out, the joke is really on us! Jimmy Kimmel revealed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” last night that the whole thing was an elaborate hoax created by him and his team.

The woman in the video is actually a stunt-woman named Daphne Avalon. They actually filmed the video a few months ago, long before twerking became a nationwide frenzy following Miley Cyrus‘ VMA performance.

“We didn’t send it to any TV station, we didn’t tweet it,” Kimmel said. “We just put it on YouTube and let the magic happen.”

Let the magic happen indeed–the video got over 9 million hits in a week. Well played Kimmel, well played.

Diversity On The Runway Worse Than In The ’70s

$

Uptown_TheDiversityCoalitionIconic black models Bethann Hardison, Iman, and Naomi Campbell appeared on “Good Morning America” to bring awareness to the lack of diversity on the runways. They appeared on behalf of The Diversity Coalition, an organization formed by Hardison of which both Iman and Campbell are members.

This is a follow-up to the letter that the coalition sent out last week in advance of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York. It read, in part:

Eyes are on an industry that season after season watches design houses consistently use one or no models of color. No matter the intention, the result is racism. Not accepting another based on the color of their skin is clearly beyond ‘aesthetic’ when it is consistent with the designer’s brand. Whether it’s the decision of the designer, stylist or casting director, that decision to use basically all white models, reveals a trait that is unbecoming to modern society. It can no longer be accepted, nor confused by the use of the Asian model.

The letter went on to name specific fashion houses that were guilty of this crime, including Chanel, Donna Karan, Versace, Prada, BCBG, and Louis Vuitton. “This way there’s no hiding,” Hardison told The Huffington Post. “If you say who, then nobody can say, ‘This has nothing to do with me.’”

It is important to focus on Hardison’s breakdown of “the aesthetic” and “artistic vision” as problematic excuses. It is easy to hide behind the guise of art as an excuse for racist or exclusionary behavior. It simply reinforces the idea that whiteness is the standard for artistic vision and beauty.  With that premise, black people simply cannot be imagined into a fashionable aesthetic. That excuse can no longer be allowed to pass. Especially given that many of the fashion houses that were listed are profiting off of the same community that they can’t envision on the runways.

In the GMA interview, Iman said that she feels the scope of diversity is worse than in the 1970s. At first thought, it seems impossible, but statistics are on her side. Jezebel has an extensive breakdown of the devolution of diversity in fashion.

“There is a time where silence is not acceptable at all,” Iman told GMA. “And if the conversation cannot be had publicly in our industry — then inherently there is something wrong with the industry.”

UPTOWN_star_style_nyfw_2013This week in the New York fashion world, all the buzz is circling around one thing –Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Throughout the city, the top designers are showcasing their upcoming spring 2014 collections to style makers, insiders, editors, and, of course, celebrities. While starlets usually (hopefully) look chic at most events and appearances, this is absolutely the case during New York Fashion Week. It’s only fitting, right? So, in honor of the week’s festivities, this Star Style gallery highlights the style stunners at New York Fashion Week — you know, just a few well-dressed ladies making statements.

UPTOWN_star_style_ciara_mbfw

Make like Ciara and stop the presses with a cozy knit statement dress, by Bernhard Willhelm, this fall. And a sizzling leather boot never hurt anyone, so kick up your boot game this season too.

UPTOWN_star_style_Solange_Knowles2

Go for a look that is subtly-bold, as spotted on Solange Knowles. Autumn is no time to put away your favorite summer prints. Try layering them with knits of the same color or a complementary hue.

UPTOWN_star_style_Rashida_Jones3

Florals are budding for fall in brocades and dark colors. Have fun and mix prints, like Rashida Jones. If you want a look that’s simple, try mixing a jewel tone with your floral prints for day or night.

UPTOWN_star_style_Kerry_Washington_4

Kerry Washington proves that an A-line dress is versatile and fuss-free. For a classic dress silhouette as such, add a cashmere cardigan to this classic dress silhouette for a Hollywood glam look. Maybe even pin on a broach or slip on a belt too.

UPTOWN_star_style_Nicole_Richie5

Nicole Richie was spotted in one of the hottest pants styles of the season — the cropped straight-leg. For fall, try rocking this style with a bootie or a pump.

UPTOWN_star_style_Angela_Simmons6

What’s not to love about Angela Simmons‘ look? Chic meets sporty here, from the leather baseball cap to the snake-print jacket. Her look proves that making a look fun, doesn’t have to mean sacrificing glam.

UPTOWN_star_style_Amber_Riley7

Amber Riley proves that those of us with curvy shapes don’t have to shy away from lace. If you’re not comfortable with the idea of a completely lace garment, try one with lace details.

The Queen of Tennis Serena Williams…Bow Down

UPTOWN_serena_williamsSerena Williams just won her fifth U.S. Open title, bringing her total number of grand slam titles to 17.  She has been the reigning queen of tennis, and with winning her second French Open and fifth U.S. Open in the year of 2013, Williams is showing no signs of slowing down.

The New York Times reports that “she did not know if she would continue her heavier schedule, that it would depend on how she felt and if she kept enjoying it. Either way, she does not sound like someone winding down her career.”  Williams also told the newspaper, “I haven’t thought of a number or an age when I want to stop, I can tell you this: I don’t see myself retiring anytime soon.”

It also sounds like the queen enjoys her reign as the No. 1 player in the world.  “Honestly, I wanted to be No. 1. In order to get that, you have to play a lot of tournaments,” Williams says.

One thing is for certain, Williams seems like she still has a lot of tennis left in her, which means more history-making and ground-breaking moments for the sport of tennis.

UPTOWN_ariana_grandeDebuting No. 1 on the iTunes charts all around the world, Ariana Grande shines with her album Yours Truly.

With songs like “The Way” and “Baby I” making the Billboard Hot 100 chart, she is destined for a great start in pop music.  Some compare her to a young Mariah Carey with her amazing vocal power.  The Chicago Reader says, “She’s got Carey’s infectiously bubbly personality, breathy voice, and impressive range, and if it’s only a B+ Mariah impression that’s still more than enough to carry a single.”

And this future superstar has been doing this her whole life, performing on Broadway and having a hit show on Nickelodeon. “People got to know me first as an actress, but my mom said I’m a singer who acts on the side, but now they are gonna get to know Ariana the little brunette girl from Boca [Raton, Florida] who loves music more than anything,” said Grande to The Inquisitr.

Be on the lookout for other songs off Yours Truly, such as “Right There” with Big Sean, and other collaborations.

How To Begin A Healthy Lifestyle

$
0

UPTOWN_family_bikingFocusing on fitness just isn’t enough to stay healthy. An overall balance will keep the body feeling great, the mind refreshed, and the heart beating.

There isn’t a general plan for everyone to follow because everyone is different. Speaking with a personal trainer and nutritionist, as well as consulting with your physician should give you the perfect starting point for assessing your health and fitness  goals.

Here are the key players in your healthy lifestyle journey, and why they’re necessary:

Fitness Trainer

The trainer will assess you to plan an exercise routine that fits your goals. Like I said, everyone is different, so depending on whether you want to lose weight, gain weight, prepare for a marathon, or lower your blood pressure; the trainer will help you reach these targets. Keep in mind that once you get started on an exercise routine, the goals could change as a result of the progress you make.

UPTOWN_doctor_checkupNutritionist & Nutrition

Eating healthy is a hard task to accomplish. Knowing what to eat, the right time to eat, and how much to eat is very important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A nutritionist can be very useful in writing a food plan for you to follow with a balance of essential nutrients and calories. For example, if you require more vitamin D or calcium, the nutritionist should be able to recommend dairy products like yogurt and milk, along with the amount of servings the body needs. Maintaining a healthy diet must coincide with physical activity.

The Doc

The doctor is the head honcho in this well- balanced plan. S/he will assess how your health is improving, or if you need to change up and explore some other areas of fitness. For example, a checkup from a doctor could determine if you need to work on lowering cholesterol levels, decreasing high blood pressure, or rehabilitating a particular injury.

Love-and-Hip-Hop-LogoHave you been bored on Monday nights lately? Going through withdrawal because you haven’t seen any heated arguments over late night studio sessions, crazy mama drama, or makeup-to-breakups? Have you been disappointed with other reality TV because it just doesn’t have enough ratchery? Well, cheer up because Mona Scott-Young is here to save the day! She’s announced that the “Love & Hip Hop” franchise will be expanding into three new cities! God, save us all.

YBF exclusively reports:

“… while no final decisions have been made about any castings, TheYBF.com confirms the show is, in fact, headed to Hollywood.

And that’s not the only city that will get the must-see-ratchet-TV treatment.  New Orleans and Houston are also being cast.

We’re told by ‘LAHH’ production sources:

‘Yes we are casting in L.A. as well as Houston & New Orleans. We are talking to a lot of great prospects and are very excited about the potential cast in all 3 cities. No final decisions have been made on cast or next city.’ “

We can only imagine what shenanigans are in store. Any guesses as to who will be cast for the three new cities? If the Teairra Mari and Ray-J rumors (did anyone else not know that they were dating?) are true for the L.A. cast, this is set to be some entertaining television, ’cause you know Ray-J has no “get right” in him.
