A Houston-area high school student was rushed the hospital on Wednesday after shooting himself in the head while handcuffed in the back of a police car, reports NBC News.
Officers say the student was conscious and breathing while being transported to a nearby hospital. He was in the intensive care unit after undergoing surgery.
No one else was hurt.
The incident reportedly began when police were called to North Shore Senior High School to investigate a report of a student with a firearm. After being searched, handcuffed behind his back and seated in a patrol car, the student retrieved a hidden gun and shot himself. It is unclear if cops took another gun from the student before he was placed in the vehicle.
Paramedics quickly arrived on the scene and his family accompanied the student to the hospital.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office will investigate the shooting.
In July, 21-year-old Chavis Carter fatally shot himself while handcuffed in the back of a police car. After much controversy over the bizarre incident, an autopsy report issued in August ruled the death a suicide. Carter had been picked up by authorities during a traffic stop in Jonesboro, Ark.
