If you’ve got $7 dollars to dish out on coffee, Starbucks is the destination to perk up your day.
The billion-dollar megachain has started selling its premium Costa Rica Finca Palmilera brew that will run coffee connoisseurs a pretty penny for a 16-ounce “grande” cup. Customers can choose to scale back and order a $6 12-ounce “tall” cup or make a pot of their own at home with a $40 half-pound bag.
Its beans are made from rare, difficult-to-grow Geisha plants that don’t produce many cherries but are full of concentrated flavor. The new coffee is only available at 46 locations in the U.S. Northwest out of more than 20,000 stores worldwide.
But the question still stands, who’s buying? Starbucks spokeswoman Lisa Passe says their dedicated customers will fall in line.
“We have loyal reserve customers who are interested in any opportunity to try something as rare and exquisite as the Geisha varietal,” Passe told The Washington Post. “We are now offering more reserve coffees than ever before because of customer demand.”
Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel took his shot at the pricey brew with a hilarious bit (below) to find out if taste testers could actually tell the difference between “regular” coffee and the Palmilera.
“I feel like this is a test to find out just how stupid we are,” he joked. “Although, while it’s ridiculous to spend $7 on a cup of coffee, it’s actually not that much more ridiculous to spend $4 on a cup of coffee.”
