School pride will be at an all-time high this weekend as many notable historically black colleges and universities will be celebrating their homecoming. From Howard University to Grambling to Jackson State and more, students across the nations will be cheering on the home team and showing their school pride.
With many alumni making the trip back to their alma mater, we’ve highlighted a few celebrities with humble beginnings at several historically black colleges…
Phylicia Rashad, Howard University (1970)
Tidbit: Down at Howard, Rashad became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
Samuel L. Jackson, Morehouse College (1972)
Tidbit: Before graduating Morehouse, Jackson co-founded “Just Us Theatre.”
Erykah Badu, Grambling State University (She left early to pursue her music career.)
Tidbit: Badu studied theater at Grambling.
Wanda Sykes, Hampton University (1986)
Tidbit: Long before she was a Hollywood star, Sykes studied marketing at Hampton.
Terrence J, North Carolina A&T State University (2004)
Tidbit: Terrence crafted his hosting skills by working at several radio stations in the area.
Yolanda Adams, Texas Southern University (1984)
Tidbit: Adams received a degree in radio/television broadcasting, but took a job teaching after graduation.
Keshia Knight Pulliam, Spelman College (2001)
Tidbit: Pulliam studied sociology and became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
