Serena Williams doesn’t like playing tennis.
With several Grand Slam titles under her belt, two gold medals, Monday’s victory at the Brisbane International tournament and a total domination of the sport, she sure could have fooled us.
After an effortless 6-2 6-3 win against South Africa’s Chanelle Scheepers, the 30-year-old player revealed to reporters that tennis is just something she’s been doing all these years and not actively enjoying.
“I just want to be able to do other things that I’m doing and expand on that. I think that helps keep my motivation up,” Williams said.
She went on to say:
“I don’t love tennis today but I’m here. I can’t live without it — there’s a difference between not loving something and not being able to live without it. It’s not that I’ve fallen out of love with it. I’ve actually never liked sports and I never understood how I became an athlete. I don’t like working out, I don’t like anything physical. If it involves sitting down or shopping, I’m excellent at it.”
Should Williams ever take time off from the sport, she has plenty of off-court activities to keep her busy.
Aneres– Serena spelled backwards– is her signature line of handbags and jewelry. Her and sister Venus Williams are part owners of the Miami Dolphins along with Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and others. And if that’s not enough, Williams has also flexed her acting chops on shows such as My Wife and Kids, Law & Order: SVU, The Game and other series/movies.
