The Colossus roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain, in Valencia, Calif., caught fire and partially collapsed on Monday. Pieces of the wooden track could be seen falling away from one of the high points of the ride as firefighters struggled to reach the blaze with the stream from their water hoses.
The park was closed at the time and no injuries were reported. The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the fire at 1:30 p.m. and the fire was extinguished by 2 p.m. Local TV news stations aired aerial views of the blaze. There’s no word yet on what caused the fire.
The ride opened in 1978 and was closed just last month. It was due to be replaced by a new combined wooden and steel structure called Twisted Colossus.
