Kendrick Johnson‘s parents will not stop fighting for justice, even though the teen’s bizarre and untimely death is technically considered an accident. The 17-year-old student athlete’s corpse was found inside a gym mat in early 2013. Johnson’s parents insist their son was murdered.
The parents, Kenneth and Jacquelyn Johnson, filed a wrongful death suit against the school board on Monday, claiming the Lowndes County Board of Education allowed their son to die “at the hands of one or more students” on school property, while school was in session. The lawsuit alleges the school board didn’t stop another student from repeatedly harassing Johnson.
The mysterious case has not had any leads despite Johnson’s schoolmates being served subpoenas to testify. Local investigators insist that Johnson’s death was an accident, stemming from the teen falling into the mat and dying of asphyxiation.
The boy’s body was crushed in such a way that many, his parents included, believe foul play was involved.
