Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated opens its arms to the entertainment industry this year with two new honorary members.
R&B singer and actress Brandy was inducted into the sorority as an honorary member this week at the 66th AKA Boule in Charlotte, North Carolina. She joins her mother Sonja Norwood, who is already a member of the sorority. “The Game” star shared her excitement of becoming an honorary Alpha Kappa Alpha soror on Instagram by posting the below photo with the caption: “Today was a very special day. My mom’s legacy as an #AKA continues.”
Earlier this month, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s International President Carolyn House Stewart formally inducted filmmaker Ava DuVernay into the sorority as an honorary member. DuVernay is an award-winning writer, producer, director, and distributor of independent films. She has earned the highest industry awards, including the Best Director Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.
Among some of the best of DuVernay’s films are Middle of Nowhere and This is the Life. She also directed an episode of ABC’s top-rated drama series, “Scandal.” Her upcoming film, SELMA, will debut December 25.
“We are honored and proud to have Ava DuVernay join our illustrious sisterhood,” said Stewart. “Her devotion to directing award-winning films, which portray positive images and convey uplifting messages, embodies the qualities of the Alpha Kappa Alpha woman. She will make a great addition to our Sorority and we look forward to supporting and embracing her.”
Congratulations to both ladies!
