Lifetime’s “BAPS” docu-series

Lifetime, known for its original and dramatic made-for-TV movies, is carving out new programming geared towards the African-American woman. With four new unscripted series on the horizon, three of these prime time shows will have you asking, “Huh?”

Let’s start with the makeover show in which Black women give white women a complete makeover. The show, titled “Girlfriend Intervention,” will upgrade a different white woman each week, making over her mind, wardrobe, beauty routine, and home. According to the press release, the series will star “four wise, poised and stylish African American women, who, in each episode, help a white sister seeking a complete makeover to restore her confidence and inner glow.” And no, we have no idea what Lifetime means by “white sister.”

The show will be hosted by four experts, including beauty expert Tracy Balan, sanctuary guru Nikki Chu, style fashionista Tiffiny Dixon, and life coach Tanisha Thomas, who help these women “break it down and tell it like it is.” Stereotype much?

The second is the swirl-tastic reality show, “Kosher Soul.” Following the daily life of comedian O’Neal McKnight and his fiancée celebrity stylist Miriam Sternoff, the series will poke fun at the couple’s different cultures. With the help of their L.A. circle of friends, the pair will try to merge their Black and Jewish cultures into one, as McKnight proves he’s the “perfect man” for Sternoff to her reluctant family.

Lifetime’s new docu-series, “BAPS,” is not to be confused with Halle Berry‘s 1997 ghetto-fabulous flick with Natalie Desselle,  of the same name. You won’t see any curved, acrylic nails with obnoxious designs, teeth covered in gold, or towering, colorful weaves on this program. Instead, “BAPS” will feature elitism at its worst. The show will document a group of lifelong friends in St. Louis, who are self-proclaimed Black American Princesses and Princes. The series will follow the silver spoon-fed group, who believes being a BAP is nothing short of a birth right.

Will you watch “Girlfriend Intervention,” “Kosher Soul,” or “BAPS”?
