The Department of Education has released the list of 55 universities facing a Title IX investigation over their handling of sexual abuse complaints. Massachusetts is the state with the highest number of investigations pending, six total.
Of the 55 universities listed, included are Ivy league institutions Harvard , Princeton and Dartmouth College. Public universities such as Ohio State, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and the University of Arizona, as well as smaller institutions like Emory University and Knox College in Illinois are also being investigated.
Title IX prohibits gender discrimination at schools that receive federal funds. The law is also in place to guarantee women equal access to sports, in addition to appropriately handling sexual violence cases. According to White House research, 1 in 5 female students are assaulted.
This release came just two days after a government initiative to become more transparent on higher education sexual assaults. The special task force provides resources for victims and information about past enforcement actions on campuses. They also conduct surveys to better combat sexual violence on campuses.
The department has the power to withhold federal funding from a college that fails to comply with the law. It has yet to use that power, but has opted to negotiate resolutions for violators.
