Writer and comedian Michael Che has landed a new gig as news correspondent for The Daily Show.
As Comedy Central loses high profile talent, including John Oliver and Stephen Colbert, the addition of Saturday Night Live’s writer heats up the late night show competition. Oliver will headline his own late night show, HBO Sunday, as Colbert announced his departure in hopes of filling David Letterman’s throne in 2015.
In June, Che will join the ranks of Samantha Bee, Aasif Mandvi and Jason Jones in Jon Stewart’s political and entertainment round table.
This new venture adds to Che’s résumé as a highly sought after comedian. In 2013, Che was one of Rolling Stone’s “50 Funniest People.” He was also crowned “New York’s Funniest Standup” at the New York Comedy Festival.
His first Comedy Central stand up special airs in June.
Although Che’s gig with Saturday Night Live will soon conclude, SNL has consistently been a launching pad for up and coming comedians and actors, who have gone off to enjoy illustrious Hollywood careers. Eddie Murphy and Jimmy Fallon has greatly benefited from their pivotal roles on SNL.
