UPTOWN_twitter_logoTwitter, Inc. revealed its new mobile app advertising will reach over 1 billion users, a number that rivals Facebook.

In a blog post today, the network described how the ads will encourage users to download software applications. This new strategy marks the first time marketers can purchase advertisements on the growing social network. With the new ads, Twitter will now be able to attract consumers in various industries, including e-commerce and gaming.

When a user selects an app-installed ad, they’ll be redirected to the advertiser’s page in a mobile-app store to download the program.

With the collaboration with MoPub, a mobile-advertising exchange that Twitter bought in October, advertisers can now reach 1 billion customers, including Twitter’s 241 million users.

“This is the first connection between Twitter and MoPub and we are eager for other opportunities in the future,” said Kevin Weil, vice president of revenue products at Twitter. “MoPub has some serious scale.”

Facebook, which currently has 1.2 billion users, launched ad placement in October 2012, driving 245 million app downloads just last year.
