Three R&B belles don bright ensembles on three different covers for the Essence beauty issue. In the magazine, which hits stands next week, Essence holds its fourth annual “Black Beauty Awards,” and cover girls Solange, Erykah Badu, and Ledisi discuss how they identify themselves in their music, as well as with their beauty and style.
When asked about being a style icon, Solange says, “A lot of times I don’t feel very deserving of that title, because it is such a rotation of inspiration that I get from … so many people.”
Ledisi discusses her red locs, which have become the vocalist’s signature ‘do. She tells Essence, “Although I’m known for my long, colorful locs, I still don’t take my hair too seriously.” She continues, “I experiment a lot, dyeing it and constantly switching styles to grab attention. My hair is one of my best accessories and changing it helps express who I am.”
Badu addresses her bold fashion, saying “I view my hair and clothes as functional art,” the mother of three goes on to say, “I’m my own stylist and I love it, but I am not trying to make a statement.”
