Barbershop, the popular 2002 film franchise will welcome a third installment, Barbershop 3, in the near future.
MGM Studios has green lit the film, offering hardcore rapper turned actor Ice Cube a mid-seven figure deal to reprise his role of Calvin, the Southside Chicago barbershop owner. Barbershop 3 is currently soliciting writers and pitching to Queen Latifah and series staple, Cedric The Entertainer.
The movie series has been highly successful, as the 2002 film grossed $75 million off a $12 million dollar budget. The budget of the 2004 sequel totaled $30 million, grossing $65 million domestic.
Ice Cube is fresh off the massively popular comedy, Ride Along, alongside comedian Kevin Hart. The cop flick grossed over $146 million off a $25 million dollar budget, exceeding expectations. The studio even green lit a sequel to the box office hit, with production scheduled for late June. Hart and Cube will return.
Aside from acting, Cube is dabbling in movie production. He’s co-producer of Straight Outta Compton, a music to film project depicting the formation of N.W.A., the hip hop pioneering group who helped launch the careers of Dr. Dre, Eazy E, and Ice Cube.
