If you’re too ashamed to text your girlfriend while throwing back brews at the bar with your boys, then BroApp is for you! This $2 app will text your girlfriend (or wife) when you’re busy, which will help you avoid ridicule from your “bros.”
Tom and James, both age 29 and from Brisbane, created BroApp as a “clever relationship wingman” that automatically sends pre-programmed text messages to girlfriends and wives. The duo say the inspiration came “after they both realized they weren’t spending enough time with their girlfriends because of a long work day.”
With BroApp you choose from a list of pre-programmed text messages, select the date and time, and the app will send those messages to your baby at the phone number you enter. Afraid she will notice that the message is canned? No worries. The app allows you to program in custom messages like “Can’t wait 2 C U Bae.”
Taking extra precautions, they placed safeguards within the app. If you two have recently exchanged text messages or just gotten off the phone, the app will cancel a scheduled message. The app will also recognize when you are at her house and connected to her wifi network. After all how awkward would it be for her to read “Hey baby. Tired from work but can’t wait to see you” while you two are snuggled up on the couch watching the latest episode of “Scandal.” And if she finds the app in your phone, a “girlfriend safety lock down” mode redirects her to a list of gifts you were “planning on buying her.”
Not everyone is buying the theory that the app will improve relationships. Wired called the app sexist and it’s “sad” that men prefer the app “rather than engage in a genuinely loving, spontaneous or thoughtful manner.” I mean how hard could it be to type, swipe, or text-to-type a simple “I can’t wait to see you”?
The creators of the app don’t think the texts are inauthentic. Tom told “Today” he used the app on a three-month dating trial. “Personally, my partner was impressed that I would write her a message even though we were going to see each other that night,” he said. In fact, women have told them that the app has increased their communication with their husband.
For the future, Tom and James are developing a female counter app for those women always on the go or who don’t want to be the “girlfriend always texting her man” at the ladies-only brunch.
