In a surprise move for many fans of Kendrick Lamar’s album good kid, m.A.A.d city was nominated for seven nomination and he walked away with zero, recalling the India Arie “worst Grammy snub in history.”

While Kendrick sat on the sidelines, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Album for The Heist. In fact, the Seattle duo swept all the rap categories before winning the Best New Artist award on the live show.

Interestingly enough after Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won the award for Best Rap Album, Macklemore sent Kendrick a personal text for taking home the golden gramophone. He later posted the conversation on his Instagram.

“You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird and sucks that I robbed you,” he apologized through text. “I was gonna say that during the speech. Then the music started playing during my speech and I froze. Anyway, you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music. Appreciate you as an artist and as a friend. Much love.”

The Grammy award winner continued to explain his thoughts in the caption below the photo:

“My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album… I’m honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that’s taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it’s proper respect…”

Kendrick showed no signs of disappointment though as he hit the stage in all white for his performance with Imagine Dragons‘ Radioactive in a surprise collaborationHe’s sure to put the Grammy snub behind him as he continues working on his sophomore album.
