Looks like there might be something to Ice Cube’s penchant for opening his movies on MLK holiday weekend.
His latest project – Ride Along – the cop comedy he stars in alongside Kevin Hart drew in $41.2 million opening weekend. Studio estimates put the take at $47.8 million once the Monday holiday box office receipts are counted, making it the highest January gross to date.
Ice Cube started the tradition with Next Friday. In an interview from UPTOWN’s Dec/Jan 2014 issue, he confessed “It was just only right. We had a black movie, we had a holiday for a black man and it worked,” he deduces. “Ride Along is coming out on that date. It’s perfect.”
Artful forshadowing perhaps?
