Don Cornelius, creator of the iconic “Soul Train,” was found dead Wednesday morning  in his Sherman Oaks, CA home. Law enforcement are reporting the death as a suicide.

Cops found Cornelius’ body around 4 a.m. PT suffering from what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds. He was immediately taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He was 75.

Cornelius began his career at Chicago’s WCIU-TV when he brilliantly came up with the idea to create the African-American version of American Bandstand, a live dance and music show airing five days a week.

Soul Train premiered on August 17, 1970 and became one of the longest-running shows of its kind upon ending in 2006. Cornelius stepped down as host of the nationally syndicated show in 1993. He remained as the executive producer until the end and branded the Soul Train Awards.

In 2008, Cornelius was arrested and charged with spousal battery and several other offences which got him a sentencing of three years probation.

Cornelius had several health issues over the years which included a stroke and a condition that required brain surgery.

He is survived by two sons, Anthony and Raymond.

Information on Cornelius’ death is still developing…

**UPDATE**

TMZ reports that one of Cornelius’ sons made the 911 call at 4 a.m. There is no word on if he was there when Cornelius allegedly shot himself.
