Does this cereal commercial make you irrationally angry? Then you’re probably well-adjusted, with an above average IQ.
On May 28, General Mills released a Cheerios commercial called “Just Checking” and subsequently had to disable the hateful comments posted to its YouTube page. Of course that didn’t stop commenters from resuming the vitriol on mind-numbingly racist message boards. (Google “cheerios coal burner commercial” if you are so inclined.)
In a statement on Gawker, Camille Gibson, vice president of marketing for Cheerios responded “Consumers have responded positively to our new Cheerios ad. At Cheerios, we know there are many kinds of families and we celebrate them all.”
Many fans have thanked the brand for casting a commercial with characters that look like their families, even going so far as to start the hashtag #istandwithcheerios .
