New information has emerged about the surprising death of Malcolm Shabazz’, the grandson of civil rights icon Malcolm X.
According to the Associated Press, the 28-year-old was killed during a bar fight at a Mexico City restaurant. Witnesess report the owner demanded Shabazs to pay a $1,200 bill and a brawl broke out when he refused to take the bill.
After the dispute, the young activist was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead of blunt-force trauma injuries.
Here’s how labor activist Miguel Suarez, a friend traveling with Shabazz, explained the incident:
“We were dancing with the girls and drinking,” said Suarez. Then the owner of the bar wanted them to pay a $1,200 bar tab, alleging that they should pay for music, drinks and the girls’ companionship.
“We pretty much got hassled,” he said. “A short dude came with a gun.”
