The family of Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly, a member of the 90s rap group Kriss Kross, has released a statement on the death of the 34-year-old rapper.
The statement reads:
“It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved Chris Kelly has passed away on May 1. To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris — the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party. Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him. His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him. — Donna Kelly Pratte (mother) & The So So Def Family”
Kelly was pronounced dead at approximately 5 p.m. on Wednesday (May 1) at the south campus of the Atlanta Medical Center. The cause of death is still unknown, but an autopsy is planned for Thursday.
The late star performed alongside Chris “Daddy Mac” Smith during the height of their success in the early and mid-90s. Kriss Kross is best known for their 1992 smash hit “Jump” from their debut album, Totally Krossed Out, as well as their signature fashions.
In February, the duo performed at So So Def’s 20th anniversary concert in Atlanta.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Kelly’s friends and family during this difficult time.
