The family of Trayvon Martin has settled the wrongful death claim filed against the homeowners association of the sub-division where Martin was shot and killed in February 2012.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, portions of the settlement–made available to the public on Friday–do not provide details on the amount of the settlement. However, the figure is believed to be more than 1 million dollars.
George Zimmerman is not part of the agreement. Benjamin Crump, attorney for Martin’s family, has stated they still plan to move forward with filing a civil suit against Zimmerman at a later date.
Seventeen year-old Martin was fatally shot near his father’s Sanford, Florida home on Feb. 26, 2012, by volunteer neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman. The case sparked heated debates as the Sanford Police Department wavered on whether to file charges against Zimmerman. Meanwhile, Zimmerman maintained that he shot Martin because he was attacked.
After extensive public outcry, in April 2011 Zimmerman was charged with second degree murder. He is awaiting trial.
