Scandal star Kerry Washington will briefly depart from her role as Olivia Pope to serve as this year’s commencement speaker at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
The school announced Monday that the GWU magna cum laude graduate and Phi Beta Kappa member will address students during the special ceremony on May 19. The actress will also receive an honorary degree.

“I am delighted that Ms. Washington has agreed to give the Commencement address,” said GWU President Steven Knapp. “She has captured the imagination of our students, and they will benefit greatly, as they head out into the world, from hearing her perspective both as an alumna and as a highly successful actor on stage, in film and on television.”
Past GWU speakers include First Lady Michelle Obama, Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel, NBC news anchor Brian Williams and others.
