Police were called to the home of Chris Brown on Monday night for an alleged domestic violence dispute, which turned out to be nothing more than a hoax and the latest incident in a series of “swatting” pranks.
A caller contacted police shortly before 5 p.m. to report the disruption, telling officers he wasn’t sure if his mother had been shot. When authorities arrived on the scene, members of Brown’s staff were at the residence but Brown was not. The home was searched, but nothing was found.
According to the L.A. Times, the “fast-growing phenomenon” was started by a group of anonymous callers who report false crimes in hopes to bring out responding officers.
Brown is the newest celebrity to join a growing list of stars who have been duped in the swatting scheme. Justin Bieber, Tom Cruise, Ashton Kutcher and Miley Cyrus have also been involved in the recent string of incidents.
