Ladies, A Year Is Too Long To Wait To Have Sex

$
0
0

UPTOWN_2014For quite some time now I’ve been noticing a popular trend of famous women gleefully admitting that they waited a specific amount of time before getting it in with their boyfriends, fiancés, and husbands. I started noticing this around 2006 when Alicia Keys was dating Kerry “Krucial” Brothers, and she revealed her body was “too beautiful” to be violated by someone who didn’t deserve it. Other celebs started to announce how chaste they were, and before long Steve Harvey released a book instructing women to treat their vaginas like a benefits package, thus introducing the infamous “three-month rule” into every day urban vernacular. So it wasn’t that surprising to hear Tia Mowry state that she waited a year to kiss her then-boyfriend-now-husband Cory Hardict.

*Disclaimer: To my knowledge, Mowry has never stated that she believes all women should wait one year before being intimate with their man, so this article is mainly addressing the comments I’ve heard many people make in regards to her revelation that she also waited a year before making love to her Hardict.*

What I’ve really found interesting is the reactions people have to finding out Mowry refused to be physical with him for one year. She has received a lot of praise for her decision, which I don’t necessarily have a problem with. But when those same folks start throwing major shade at everyone else, as if we’re having frivolous and disgusting sex, and we must adopt their way of doing things in order to find long-term relationship success. There has to be some middle ground. As a man, I always cringe when I hear people give sex and relationship advice that starts with: “You need to make a man wait [insert time period here] before having sex with him, so your relationship will work out!” Here’s why I hate that statement:

No one knows what’s best for you or your relationship.

I cannot stand the assumption that there is one “right” way to make a relationship work and there’s only one way to engage in a loving, happy relationship. People hop up on their soapboxes and say stupid shit like, “Well, I’m married and this worked for me, so you have to listen to what I’m saying,” and that’s complete crap. How you got to the altar and how your relationship works won’t necessarily work for me or anyone else. Mowry and Hardict built a long-term relationship without kissing for 365+ days, and I know, damn well, that is not going to work for me, which leads me to my next point:

The existence of a sexual appetite doesn’t make you a bad person.

UPTOWN_couple_watching_TV_in_bedThere are dudes out there that love sex and are in relationships with women who love sex. And they didn’t wait a year to smash, but they are very happy together. But when you start getting into the habit of telling people there are acceptable time-frames for engaging in physical contact, you are also establishing what constitutes unacceptable behavior, and often times that leads to demonizing people who want to do anything more than just waiting.

For example, I love intimacy (I really wish more people knew the difference between sex and intimacy) and it is a critical part of how I establish a connection with a woman. I could not seriously date a woman for 12 months without being intimate because we would fall into a platonic friendship way before that. See, a man can get sex from anyone, but getting true intimacy is hard as hell. Busting a nut, washing off, and going home is one thing, but lying on a couch with your arms wrapped around the woman you love while watching “Martin” DVDs is an entirely different thing. So explain to me why I should be viewed as less of a “real grown-ass man” than Hardict because we place importance on different things?

Oh, and quick newsflash: Everyone does not subscribe to the same heterosexual, Judeo-Christian value-system, so please do not go around pushing the Bible in people’s faces and instructing them on what “God” says they should do, unless you are sure you are speaking to someone of your same faith.

UPTOWN_swinging_pocket_watchThe part of the waiting debate that makes me laugh my ass off the most is the assertion that women need to create time-frames on when she gives a man some sex but nothing else, because he will judge the entirety of her worth based on that. That is the most insulting, anti-intellectual, and ignorant comment any person can make because it’s predicated on the belief that men are all horny troglodytes who don’t posses the ability to view a woman’s worth through any other lens than what she does with her body. It debases us all down to cavemen who think women we sleep with inside of one month are all Superheads, and women who we wait 12 months are all Michelle Obamas.

Contrary to many ridiculous beliefs, men take many things into account when deciding how we feel about a woman, and what we think about our shared connection. If I meet a woman who carries herself with dignity and class, and we click on all levels, have an immediate and intense attraction to one another, and end up having sex, why would I instantly degrade her to ho status? I love when people reference that STUPID-ASS rhetorical question: “Why would a man buy the cow if the milk is for free?” Well my counter-question to that is: “Why the HELL is sex analogous to the milk in that scenario?” Although a farmer’s main use for a cow may be dairy-farming, a woman’s vagina does not encompass my main and sole focus for having her in my life. If you think a man should put a ring on your finger to justify him getting the milk as the main component in your relationship, chances are you’re selling your worth very short.

But here’s the main reason women shouldn’t wait one year to have sex with their men: Arbitrary time-frames are stupid and they only hamper your connection more than help it. There is no right time to have sex. Some couples might want to kiss right after the first date, while others may wait a full year like Mowry. Some couples might want to have sex within the first three weeks, and other couples might want to wait three years. Some couples might wait until they are in a monogamous relationship, and others wait until they are married. And here’s the reality of all those scenarios: There is no “right” amount of time to wait to do anything. One year might be too long for some people, and one year may be too short for others, but it’s up to them to find that out.

To hell with a three-month rule, a one-year rule, a ’til-the-Eagles-finally-win-a-Super-Bowl rule, or any other amount of time that is not based solely on your connection with your significant other. Communicate with them, wrap it up, and then do what’s best for both of you.

True Story: My Husband Is Bisexual

UPTOWN_bisexualityCourtesy of The Frisky

In private, my husband, Paul*, has started referring to his sexual orientation as “Results-Oriented.” As in, he doesn’t care what gender his sexual partners are if they can get the job done, so to speak. He’s being glib when he says that — no, he wouldn’t go to bed with just anyone — but there’s also some truth behind it. For a person who isn’t ready to socially, culturally, or politically identify as bisexual, Results-Oriented is his way of saying that he’s not quite as straight as most straight-identified men.

Paul started calling himself Results-Oriented around the time we had our first foursome with a straight-presenting, queer-identified couple. For the most part, we engaged in heterosexual and lesbian activities, but at one point, I let it slip that watching two men together has always been one of my top turn-ons. Our male partner looked up with excitement and climbed on top of Paul. Once he obtained consent, he gave Paul a long and thorough blowjob that finished in climax. I couldn’t decide whether to observe our partner’s clearly experienced technique or Paul’s facial expressions of utterly baffled pleasure. When it was over, all my husband could say was, “Wow … that wasn’t as different as I imagined it would be.”

72 Hours In Rome

rome cavalieriThe Colosseum. The Vatican. The Sistine Chapel. The Pantheon. Trevi Fountain. Rome is home to some of the world’s most recognizable landmarks. As a first-time visitor, it was tempting to see them all, but I came armed with my own idea of an ambitious to-do list: Relax. Eat. Repeat. And here’s how I did it:

13:30 Sleep in Beauty

The best views of Rome can be had from the Monte Mario hilltop, so staying at the Rome Cavalieri guarantees #breathtakingvacation photos for Instagram. The five-star property is Italy’s only Waldorf Astoria, but that’s not why it was near impossible to leave my room: When a six-hour time difference, made-to-order aromatherapy pillows, double soundproofed doors and a king-size bed are involved, a disco nap has to happen.

Happy 50th: Currently, the property is celebrating its silver anniversary with themed guest packages, including Click & Go: It’s the Dolce Vita! and Roman Shopping Holiday.

16:00 Pamper Palace

Much like the hotel itself, the Cavalieri Grand Spa Club is a frequent playground for boldface names and well-polished locals. The amethyst Turkish bath and fitness center draws cliques in the early evening. La Prairie products (cell-energizing masks, platinum-infused creams) are the basis for anti-aging facials. The 80-minute Pepper Treatment, designed to combat cellulite, sounded like a smart ounce of prevention against the pounds of food I planned to gorge on later.

Life’s a Beach: Try the newest addition to the Grand Spa Club treatment menu, the St. Barth “Chill Out,” an intensely relaxing 80-minute body indulgence that uses clam shells with self-heating properties to de-stress and rejuvenate.
la pergola's kitchen chrystal parker heinz beck20:00 Star Power

A kitchen tour ended with an impromptu cooking demonstration by Heinz Beck, who helms the hotel’s triple-Michelin-starred La Pergola. This award-winning chef engineers dishes that are as delicious as they are deceptively light; he conducts controlled experiments on diners to make sure what tastes great going down doesn’t cause fatigue or crazy spikes in sugar levels. Menus change frequently, but lucky repeat diners never pass up Beck’s signature Fagottelli “La Pergola,” fluffy pasta pillows filled with a creamy cheese center.

12:30 Park Place

Locals retreat to the lush public park known as Villa Borghese for relaxing strolls around the fountains, and power trips through the bike trails and running paths. It’s also home to several museums. Just outside the National Museum of Contemporary Art is Caffè delle Arti, a popular weekend spot for lunch al fresco. The waiter suggested a three-ingredient Roman classic—spaghetti con cacio e pepe (spaghetti with cheese and pepper)—which demands consumption while warm so that the noodles twirl effortlessly around the fork tines.

More La Vita Local: The bar at Hotel de Russie is popular for drinking and eating under the stars.
21:05 Downtown Saturday Night

Hanging in a large party, I dropped into a packed legend known amongst pizza devotees as Da Francesco. After being seated, we wasted no time ordering every bruschetta on the menu. Everyone in our slightly carb-conscious group claimed to want “just a little bite,” but it quickly became clear it was more of a “no crumb left behind” mission. Classic Roman food makes magic with just a few basic, stellar ingredients. In a “more is more” moment, I ordered a disappointing onion, mushroom and cheese pizza. I should have listened: Margherita style is best. It only took one bite of my neighbor’s pie to confirm that cheese and tomato sauce are all one ever needs.

uptown rome campomarzio7010:15 Street Walker

With no pictures of ancient Roman things on my iPhone, I decided upon one final mission: souvenir shopping and one photo of a landmark. The first stop, Trevi Fountain, was a five-minute affair, and the area bustled with so much distraction I completely forgot to make a wish. Then it was on to shopping. Many stores are closed on Sundays, but with some determination, there are great finds on the smaller, less-traveled streets. Campomarzio70 celebrates Italy’s perfume-making history, offering a sleek gallery of rare scents and only found- in-Italy luxury brands like XerJoff’s XJ Casamorati 1888 collection. Wandering along the winding streets, I stumbled upon Piazza di San Lorenzo in Lucina (also Piazza San Lorenzo), a triangular piazza lined with a handful of luxury shops (the usual suspects: Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton) plus pharmacies and outdoor cafes.

Drive By: From here, the Pantheon is only a few minutes by cab, so hail a taxi and tell the driver to swing by.

15:25 Coffee Culture

Certain lessons about cultural differences were put to great use at the recharging station known as Gran Caffè La Caffettiera. Starbucks habits are poo-poo’ed here; it’s best to order an afternoon pick-me-up the Italian way. Forget lattes—those are for children. And cappuccino is for breakfast only; never the P.M. Either order un caffè (a basic espresso) or un caffè corretto (espresso corrected with a shot of liquor.)
Native Gluttony: Roman eating according to Expat Katie Parla

Tonda – It’s worth a trip outside the city center for stellar starters, including supplì (assorted fried rice balls), trapizzini (fluffy pockets of triangular dough filled with sauces of the Roman tradition) and thick-rimmed Neapolitan style pizzas with creative toppings.

Pipero al Rex – Owner Alessandro Pipero and chef Luciano Monosilio earned a Michelin star for their elegant modern dishes, but it is a pasta dish inspired by tradition—spaghetti alla carbonara— that draws crowds.

Vice Gelateria – This growing gelato chain serves creamy, intense flavors made with all-natural ingredients. The vanilla made with Madagascar beans is particularly addictive.

Birra + – Located on Pigneto’s main drag, this is my favorite place for super hoppy craft beers.

Katie Parla is a Rome-based food and beverage expert. She is the creator of two dining apps and the blog Parla Food.

Homophobia, ‘The Haves and the Have Nots’

UPTOWN_homophobia_the_haves_and_the_have_notsCourtesy of Ebony.com

Tyler Perry is riding high off of the success of his latest hit TV series, “The Haves And The Have Nots.” The soap opera has been a home-run with Perry’s core audience, netting a total of 2 million viewers to become OWN’s highest-rated show to date.

Sticking to his usual formula of mass stereotyping, Perry covers all of his bases. Bourgie Black folk? Check. Hardworking, southern church woman? Check. Privileged Whites? You got it. (There’s even an Hispanic maid.) But this time, there’s one group Perry threw into the mix that I never thought he’d give the time of day to: gay men. Aside from longstanding rumors about Perry’s own sexual preference, it’s surprising that he would address homosexuality at all, considering his fan base is predominantly Black Christian women.

In “The Haves And The Have Nots,” Perry doesn’t just address it, he goes there. His character, Jeffery, is a gay Black man who comes from a very wealthy family and is also trapped in the closet, R. Kelly-style. While being in the closet is a very real experience for many same-gender-loving people, particularly Black men, it didn’t quite sit well with me upon first watching the show, because I suspected Perry would more than likely take the opportunity to do what he does best: drench his character in so many stereotypes that it would turn into a television hate-fest. And that it did.

Fox & Friends, Daily Caller Falsely Report ’3 Black Teens’ Arrested in Chris Lane Murder

The senseless, infuriating murder of Australian Chris Lane has drawn comparisons, by some media outlets, to the killing of Trayvon Martin. Fox and Friends and The Daily Caller, for example, have each posited the Lane killing as illustrating some sort of “double standard” by black leaders like Rev. Al Sharpton, Rev. Jesse Jackson, and President Barack Obama, but in the process, each of them falsely reported that Lane was shot by “three black teens,” when one of the suspects is clearly a white male. A Duncan, Oklahoma police source confirms, to Mediaite, that 17 year-old suspect Michael Jones is, indeed, a white male.

 new york kniggas

By Colby Carrington

File this – along w/ Russell Simmons’ Harriet Tubman sex parody – under “Really should have reconsidered that one.”

A New York clothing store was selling a Knicks t-shirt with the logo reworked to read “Real New York Kniggas” before customer complaints – and the threat of a lawsuit by the basketball team – shut it down.

In an official statement, the Knicks said “We absolutely do not condone this t-shirt, which violates our trademark rights and now that it has been brought to our attention, the Knicks are working with the NBA to have the store cease and desist from selling them.”

The store manager, Eddie Nunez shrugged off the brouhaha about the $45 shirt.

“Everybody’s different,” he told NBC New York. “Some people are offended, some people laugh, some people buy it.”

Nunez initially intended to keep selling the top despite the backlash but later changed his mind.

Trademark infringement aside, I wonder if Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz would otherwise have gotten a pass to sell similarly designed shirts.

Do you think the shirt was funny or in poor taste?

‘Law & Order’ To Combine Trayvon Martin, Stop-And-Frisk & Paula Deen

trayvon martin svu (NYDailyNews)“Law & Order: SVU” often aims to tackle high-profile issues through their plot-lines, such as the Chris Brown and Rihanna-themed episode that aired last February. In the show’s 15th season, which begins airing in September, the writers will attempt to address three headlining issues affecting the Black community.

According to Executive Producer Warren Leight, the Trayvon Martin case and the Paula Deen scandal will be played against a New York backdrop.

Cybill Shepherd will play a celebrity chef, who feels like a rapist is pursuing her. The character will turn around and find a teenager, and will shoot him. Jeffrey Tambor will play the defense attorney representing her.

“There’s a lot of stop and frisk elements to that as well,” Leight said to Entertainment Weekly.

“Is racial profiling justifiable? Can self-defense involve racial profiling? We’re diving right into that,” he continued.

This episode will divide the detectives of the Special Victims Unit. And many members of the show’s staff also had different views about the episode’s content.

Audience members will vary in their responses, as well. The issues that inspired this episode were only recently front-page news. Sentiments about Paula Deen, George Zimmerman and stop-and-frisk are still fresh.

“It was interesting to see people read that script and have different interpretations about who did what and whether or not they deserved prison for it. It was fascinating,” Leight said.

The “Law & Order: SVU” season begins September 25 at 9 p.m. on NBC.

UPTOWN_couple_watching_TVBenevidz, an adult entertainment site, has debuted a platform in which you can watch porn for charity.

The adult industry generates $5 billion in U.S. revenue per year, and Benevidz’s founder Michael Wondercub wants a slice of those dollars to be used to enhance society.

Anyone 18 or over can join the Benevidz community and purchase helping “helping-handz credits.” With these credits, viewers have the ability to watch live shows from the site’s performers and lend helping hands, er, donations to a charity of the performer’s choosing. And if you’re a bit voyeuristic yourself, viewers can become performers, as well.

Benevidz will match 50 percent of the earnings and donate that amount to a charitable organization. Benevidz states that it currently has seven reputable charities that support causes benefiting U.S. troops, battered women, human trafficking prevention, cancer research, people with cognitive and physical disabilities, abused/neglected animals, and gay rights.

Wondercub aims to donate $1 million  a year to each charitable cause.

Benevidz is currently crowd-funding on RocketHub to get off the ground and has garnered more than $1,000 towards its $15,000 goal.

Locked & Loaded: Stacey Dash’s Most Ridiculous Tweets

$
0
0

UPTOWN_stacey_dash_american_flagStacey Dash has long been hailed by the Black community as an ageless beauty with classic love-interest potential. She played Dionne Davenport in the ‘90s cult classic movie and subsequent television series Clueless. She was also the lead role on VH1’s “Single Ladies” for a short-lived season, before unexpectedly walking away from the show. But aside from appearing in a few rap videos, failing to launch a singing career, and starring in a particularly explicit webisode, Dash’s career has been relatively lackluster.

That’s why the 46-year-old actress has recently taken to Twitter to express her sentiments on everything from President Obama to Trayvon Martin. Ironically, her tweets have been a bit more conservative than fans expected, which has been cause for controversy. But her latest rants make us wonder whether she’s just another African-American Republican or anti-Black altogether.

Take a look at some of Stacey Dash’s most ridiculous tweets over the past year.

 stacey dash shot 1

Shots Fired: Dash tweeted, “Vote For Romney. The only choice for your future. @MittRomney @TeamRomney #mittromney #VOTE #voteromney,” plus a photo of herself wearing a red bikini in front of the American flag last October.

Target: The Obama 2012 Campaign.

Why: Because of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. Dash appeared on Piers Morgan Tonight to discuss the backlash that followed her tweet and said, of her support for Romney, “I chose him not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character.”

stacey dash shot 2

Shots Fired: “God does everything for a reason @Paula_Deen Only God can judge your heart BTW my daughter loves your show (only way she can get me to cook),” Dash tweeted in June.

Target: Deen’s former staff members, who filed a lawsuit against the butter-obsessed chef and restaurateur for harassment, racism, and discriminatory behavior, which resulted in the end of their employment. And those who opposed the cook’s use of the N-word and her idea of the “perfect plantation wedding,” which would feature Black waiters dressed as slaves.

Why: The Food Network and many other endorsers dropped Paula Deen after news of her racist antics surfaced, which prompted Dash to extend hers and her daughter’s support.

stacey dash shot 3

Shots Fired: Dash tweeted a link to a Fox News article deriding Oprah for comparing Trayvon Martin to Emmett Till and suggesting that the President “should not be on Fox News every day.” She added her own two cents, adding, “Shame on you @oprah.”

Target: The world’s most powerful celebrity, according to the 2013 Forbes List, as evidenced by her multi-billion dollar empire, headlining philanthropy, and impressive support network.

Why: Once again, she attributed the inspiration for her tweet to a prominent figure in Black history. “If you aren’t careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing,” Dash continued, quoting Malcolm X.

stacey dash shot 4

Shots Fired: “Of course. VOTER ID. Common Sense,” Dash told her followers in July.

Target: The 318,000 registered voters in North Carolina who lack a government-issued driver’s license or ID card, many of whom are African American, low income, or elderly.

Why: We’re unsure what caused the Clueless actress to share her idea of “common sense,” last month, but the ACLU and the NAACP are both filing suits to challenge North Carolina’s newest law, citing that the law infringes upon the protections of the Constitution and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and attempts to weaken the political effectiveness of minority voters.

Other gems on Stacey Dash’s timeline include comparisons of the White House to the island from Lord Of The Flies; accusations that the Obama Administration is “a bunch of low-level henchman” with threats of McCarthyism; and a particularly comical, “Thank God for the GOP.”

The ex-”Single Ladies” star must be pining for a radical, conservative Fox News show or some sort of spicy, self-hating book deal. She’s probably a better candidate for “Iyanla: Fix My Life,” though. Dash is about 140 characters away from Maia Campbell.

Living up to the shiftless negro stereotype, I surrendered all prospects of being productive with an ‘Orange Is The New Black’ two day marathon last weekend. It’s the best decision I have made in months.

“In Jenji Kohan’s magnificent and thoroughly engrossing new series, ‘Orange Is the New Black’, prison is still the pits. But it is also filled with the entire range of human emotion and stories, all of which are brought vividly to life in a world where a stick of gum could ignite either a romance or a death threat,” writes Washington Post television critic Hank Steuver.

Jay Z Foundation Helps Student Study Abroad

Laquisha SpringerLaquisha Springer, a 21-year-old behavioral neuroscience major at Connecticut College, praised Jay Z’s foundation for the opportunity to study abroad due to a little-known partnership between the U.S. State Department and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation.

“I do not believe that there was a moment that I did not learn something new from studying abroad,” Springer said.

Jay Z has been criticized recently for his remark that “my presence is charity” in response to longtime civil rights activist and entertainer Harry Belafonte’s criticism that Jay Z and Beyonce were not doing enough in the realm of social responsibility.

Springer was one of four students to receive one of the Shawn Carter Foundation-Gilman International Scholarships through the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

“It makes me proud, you know, to know that someone who is relatively close to my age and someone I can relate to who’s had to struggle to get to where he is, that he’s investing in my future,” Springer, told Diverse Education. “That shows me that he believes in my future.”

The Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation has awarded $1.3 million in scholarships to 188 students in addition to the four study abroad scholarships through the Gilman scholars program.

Well I guess if you want your talk show ratings to tickle Heaven, and happen to be  MawMaw to 2013′s most talked about baby then you can figure out a way to make that happen.

All the hinting that granny Kris Jenner did about baby North West debuting on her talk show has finally come to pass.  During the finale, baby daddy Kanye West revealed this photo of his daughter.

I have no problem calling a baby ugly.  But this baby girl is adorable.  I spy Kanye’s cheeks; Kim K’s eyes and mouth and cheekbones – recognizable despite North’s lack of contouring. All around Cutie. Pa. Tootie.
