Michelle Obama Crowned Fashion Royalty By Britain’s Sunday Times

Michelle ObamaAcross the pond (much like here at home), Michelle Obama is considered fashion royalty.

Fresh off her April Vogue cover, our First Lady has claimed the top spot as “best dressed” on Britain’s Sunday Times Style Magazine.

To promote the latest issue, the glossy released an ad featuring a profile of Michelle wearing a crown on a first-class postage stamp– a spot traditionally reserved for the Queen of England.

“I always say that women should wear whatever makes them feel good about themselves. That’s what I always try to do,” she said during the January interview with Vogue. “I also believe that if you’re comfortable in your clothes it’s easy to connect with people and make them feel comfortable as well. In every interaction that I have with people, I always want to show them my most authentic self.”

Are Black Americans Ignoring Congo Crisis?

A poll conducted just before the 2012 presidential election found that issues related to foreign affairs rank among the lowest priorities for Americans. For this reason it is not entirely surprising that media outlets rarely cover international stories, particularly conflicts and tragedies, with the enthusiasm and intensity increasingly reserved for stories about Kate Middleton‘s and Kim Kardashian‘s pregnancies.

Those international stories that do generate high-profile attention usually do so only briefly, and often because of the involvement of a Hollywood celebrity, such as when George Clooney shamed the media into covering the crisis in Sudan. Now another actor is trying to bring media attention, and the attention of Americans, to the crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Isaiah Washington, famous for his role in the TV series “Grey’s Anatomy” and a host of films, is taking time out from promoting current projects, like the critically acclaimed Blue Caprice, to try to draw some of the media spotlight back onto the Congo crisis. On Saturday he will join others in Atlanta for the Million Woman Walk for Congo, sponsored by Dunia magazine, which has dubbed the walk an effort to remind Americans of “Africa’s Forgotten War.”

Roland Martin Speaks On CNN Departure: ‘My Voice Is Not Going To Be Silenced By Anybody’

Roland MartinEarlier this week, CNN news contributor Roland Martin announced his departure from the network, with his final day scheduled for April 6. The 44-year-old journalist is the latest media personality to be dropped under the Jeff Zucker era, which began in January.

Martin recently sat down with EBONY.com to discuss the reasons behind his exit, his opinion on the network’s highly criticized “White-out” and why his voice will not be silenced.

On his contract not being renewed…

“Well, I was actually told in December by Ken Jautz, the executive vice president [of CNN], that the contract wasn’t going to be renewed. Jeff Zucker has a vision for the network and wants to see different faces and I get that. I enjoyed working there, I have a lot of colleagues that I have grown to like and respect at CNN and so the bottom line is you work in places and then you move on.

One of the things I always focus on is building my brand beyond one thing and so we’ve been doing great with [my show on] TVOne, Washington Watch and we’ve got some things coming up that are exciting that I can’t announce yet that I‘m really looking forward to. And, of course, every day I’m on the Tom Joyner Morning Show and I’ve got my nationally syndicated column. So, I’m not going anywhere. My voice is not going to be silenced by anybody. We’ve got great things ahead.”

On Jeff Zucker’s lack of minority hires/reporters…

“Look, I don’t know. We haven’t seen the full vision [of Zucker yet]. That determination will have to be made later; it’s very early in the game. That’s pretty much all I can say to that. One of the things I always talk about is having multiple opportunities, multiple platforms and revenue streams to be able to layout your message. At CNN, I just come in when they call but I have had the advantage of having other platforms where I was able to talk to cabinet secretaries and the First Lady and the Vice President, the President and Senators. And I think that what’s most important is, I’ve always kept a foot in Black media. I’m absolutely committed to building up Black media and I think that is absolutely important in 2013 that we have strong Black cable networks, strong Black websites, magazines, and newspapers where we’re able to focus on our issues and our stories and highlight our people and not necessarily wait for somebody else to do it.”

Check out Martin’s advice to fellow journalist Don Lemon, his ideas on engaging the Black community and the entire interview over at EBONY.com.

*UPDATE: Regina King took to Twitter on Friday to deny reports of a split from longtime boyfriend, Malcolm-Jamal Warner.

She stated, “Hey everybody PLEASE don’t believe everything you read. Me & @MalcolmJamalWar are good. Life happens. Forward motion. Godspeed.”

Unfortunately, another Hollywood couple bites the dust. Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Regina King have reportedly called it quits after more than two years of dating.

Us Weekly reports:

“After over two years of dating, Malcolm-Jamal Warner has split with girlfriend Regina King, a source confirms to Us Weekly — and it wasn’t the most amicable of partings. ‘He said he wasn’t feeling it anymore,’ the source adds, explaining that Warner, 42, asked King and her young son (with ex-husband Ian Alexander Sr.) to move out of the house they shared. ‘She’s still very brokenhearted,’ says the insider of the Southland actress, 42.”

As child stars, Warner and King have been friends since the 1980s and began quietly dating following her marriage to ex-husband Ian Alexander Sr.

Margaret E. SmithFive teenagers were arrested earlier this week after allegedly carjacking and kidnapping an elderly Delaware woman, according to CBS News.

A family member reported Margaret E. Smith, 89, missing around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, claiming they hadn’t seen her since she got into her car around 11 a.m. A gold alert was issued for Smith when relatives began to worry about her whereabouts due to her medical conditions.

She was later located wandering around a local cemetery, confused and suffering from exposure. Smith was treated at a nearby hospital and released.

While being interviewed by authorities, officers tracked down Smith’s car and arrested the five minors inside: Junia McDonald (14), Jackeline H. Perez (15), Rondaiges A. Harper (17), Phillip L. Brewer (17) and Deniaya E. Smith (15).

Smith said she agreed to give McDonald and Perez a ride when they asked to be taken to a nearby residence, but the pair reportedly stole her keys and forced their victim into the car’s trunk upon arriving at the house. $500 was also taken from Smith’s coat pocket.

The young girls allegedly picked up the other teens before dropping the distraught woman off in the cemetery.

McDonald and Perez have been charged with conspiracy, kidnapping, carjacking and robbery. Harper and Brewer have been charged with conspiracy, kidnapping and receiving stolen property. Deniaya Smith has been charged with conspiracy and receiving stolen property.

Deandrea Devon Davis-Williams21-year-old Deandrea Devon Davis-Williams was arrested late Tuesday night and charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child, according to The Associated Press. The Houston, Texas resident is accused of repeatedly raping an 11-year-old neighbor who became pregnant and gave birth to a healthy child on Thursday.

Court documents state the abuse occurred almost daily for more than seven months beginning last June. The girl’s mother was made aware of the attacks when she received a call from school officials who believed her daughter was pregnant. The woman then bought a pregnancy test for the child, prompting the victim to confess about the assaults.

A doctor later confirmed the pregnancy.

A criminal complaint shows the attacks began last summer and occurred “almost every day when no one was home.” They reportedly continued throughout the school year when the girl’s mother was working two jobs.

While Davis-Williams has denied any involvement, police have obtained copies of text messages in which he asked the girl “why she told on him and told her that he was going to kill himself.

Davis-Williams appeared in court Thursday where a judge tripled his original $50,000 bond and set arraignment for April 23.

Ahmad "Real" Givens

We all remember the over-the-top family duo, Ahmad “Real” Givens and Kamal “Chance” Givens of VH1 reality TV fame.  The two gave viewers laughs, but now they are in need of prayers as 33-year old Ahmad announced, on Thursday, he is battling stage-4 colon cancer.

The brothers first hit our TV-screens in VH1’s 2007 reality series “I Love New York” and later in their own spin-off, “Real Chance of Love.”

Musician and fellow VH1 star Ray J tweeted about a somber exchange shared with “Chance” (Kamal Givens) on his brother:

“Just talked to ‘Chance’ [Kamal Givens, Real's brother] he told me to tell the world to pray for his bro ‘Real’ he has stage 4 colon cancer! Pls send out a prayer for him!”

As is the case with many cancer sufferers, medical costs are a burden. With a goal of $200,000, Ahmad’s family has set up a fund to help pay for expenses. They’ve explained that his insurance company only covers 40 percent of his growing medical costs.

On the fundraising page, they also assure Real hasn’t given up the fight:

“Anybody that knows Real knows that he is a tough, strong, spiritual individual, and will fight this off. The Givens family currently has Real being treated at Cedars Sinai. Real is trying to stay positive and make a full recovery. He appreciates all his friends, family, and fans for helping him get through in this time of need.”

Exchanges between Evelyn Lozada and Chad Johnson continue to heat up. Lozada recently issued a cease and desist letter to her ex-husband and former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson. In the letter, she reportedly warns Johnson to “stop harassing her online… or else,” according to TMZ.

Sources close to the “Basketball Wives” reality-TV star say the letter was sent on Thursday after Johnson launched a verbal assault against Lozada on Twitter. At the height of his rant, Johnson accused Lozada of sending late night texts and cheating.

Those in Lozada’s corner say Johnson’s claims are untrue. According to TMZ, Lozada is considering a restraining order if Johnson refuses to stop all contact.

Johnson is also due in court on Monday for a hearing on ending his probation early.

De’Marquis Elkins Arrested: Teens Allegedly Kill Baby In Front Of Mother

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — The mother of a baby shot dead in his stroller took one look at a teenage suspect’s jailhouse mugshot Saturday and said he was definitely the killer. Yet an aunt of the teen said he was eating breakfast with her when the slaying took place.

Despite the conflicting stories, police have charged 17-year-old De’Marquise Elkins with murder, along with a 14-year-old suspect whose name has been withheld because he’s a juvenile.

Brunswick police spokesman Todd Rhodes said even though Elkins’ aunt provided an alibi, authorities have good reason to bring the charges.

“That’s what she’s saying, but the evidence we’re looking at says something else,” Rhodes said, though he would not elaborate.

Also Saturday, police in this coastal port city released 911 recordings from neighbors who sobbed and pleaded for help right after 13-month-old Antonio Santiago was shot in the head a few blocks from his mother’s apartment.

Sherry West said she was pushing her baby in his stroller as she walked home from the post office Thursday morning. She said a teenager, with a younger boy behind him, approached and asked her for money. West said when she told him she had no money, the teen drew a gun and said: “Do you want me to kill your baby?”

The gunman opened fire and West was shot in the leg, while another bullet grazed her left ear, she said. She watched helplessly as the gunman shot her son in the face, she said.

With gun violence–particularly in the black community–saturating news headlines, the finger of blame has turned toward hip-hop culture, yet again. Rapper and mogul Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson will appear on CBS News “Sunday Morning” to field a few questions on the topic, in addition to his upcoming 5th album Street King Immortal.

When asked by CBS’s Tracy Smith about a link between the two worlds, 50 Cent coolly argued there is no connection between rap music and gun violence. He explained, his music reflects his personal experience rather than placing gunplay on a pedestal.

“If you were doing that and you weren’t actually experiencing it, I would say you were glorifying it,” he said. “If you’re drawing from something from your actual experience, isn’t it art imitating life?”

Art imitating life, indeed, but at whose expense?

Watch the full interview on “Sunday Morning” today at 9 a.m. EST on CBS.

Art: Twin Passions

Twin Passions

Swizz Beatz has influenced the zeitgeist for over a decade, from crafting hit records since the ‘90s to now serving as Creative Director for Rebook Classics, a move that saved the brand from extinction. Yet for all his endeavors, Swizz’s passion for painting and mixed media may be the most intriguing. With whispers circulating of his first solo exhibition and possibly his own gallery, Swizz is forging an art movement that builds on his desire of becoming the premier steward of the culture he loves.

His artistic expression was born out of pragmatism. Though 1980s “graffiti train bombing” in his native South Bronx first sparked Swizz’s interest in visual art, it wasn’t until 1999—when he decorated his first home with Basquiat and Ernie Barnes paintings—that the musician had a life-changing epiphany. “I realized I just spent $500,000 on something for my wall. I could take 10 percent of that and invest in myself and just see what it does,” he explains. Thus began the adventures of Swizz Beatz “Le Artiste.” His pieces can be as large as five feet tall in various styles, including ia referential blend of postmodern and pop art. Periodically, Swizz donates his paintings to various charities, such as the Children’s Cancer and Blood Foundation, where he gifted for auction a piece entitled The Victory Suite (which has an estimated value of $15,000).

Swizz knows that his one-man art movement has much wider implications. It serves as a cultural bridge where the hip-hop generation gets a peek into the often-exclusionary world of contemporary art, and the art world gets exposure to one of the most powerful entities driving popular culture today. “If all artists accepted the entire meaning of the word ‘art,’ they would be better artists all around the board,” Swizz says. “If you can make a hit song, that is the hardest thing to do in the world. You probably could take a great photo as well. You probably could paint something amazing. They all have similar threads.”

Like Hip Hop, Black Talking Heads Are Not Dead

Roland MartinBy Charles D. Ellison

The sudden fall of talking head Roland Martin from CNN grace was really never all that sudden.  Speculation had been mounting for months about the fate of the cable network’s Black Pack of folks like Martin, Soledad O’Brien and Donna Brazille.  Jeff Zucker, balded rage, was raising the expectations game and looking to a hard-charging game change for the ratings-starved media Malcolm in the Middle.

Those in the know knew what was on the next.  One beleaguered colleague lamented in a text about the lack of Black casting, soberly ending the tappy analysis with a curious question about “who else” could CNN get.

Like so many conversations centered on Black pop, politics and culture, the ongoing debate over Blacks in media can become annoyingly star struck.  We’re still stuck in the mindset that there are too few of “us” gracing the plastic sets of cable news channels, similar to the now debunked myth that more Black men are in prison than in college.  When a Hennessy brand like Martin is cracked and shattered, many quickly assume racial annihilation is at work with dissed personalities like the celebrity in question flirting with race card play for casual measure – hence, Martin’s tweeted reference to Zucker’s “peeps” and recent comments about “being silenced.”

Don’t believe the hype. Try telling that to the folks who are really silenced day-to-day, like the bullied nine-to-fives who stare institutional harassment in the face and can barely get a 30-minute lunch.  Or, the impoverished activists who want to make an impact, but can never get a break from paycheck-to-paycheck and end up giving up for lack of food on the table.  Black talking heads are not rare or endangered novelty species.  Snoozing talk show bookers who just don’t bother digging the crates any deeper than they have to want you to believe that.

But, Black pundits are very much like hip hop: not dead.  Self-appointed social critics and bloggers frequently write hip hop obituaries, as if the art form choked an ugly death at the passing of Billboard icons like Tupac and Biggie.  Yet, that’s as far as it gets because the “experts” really don’t know jack shit about hip hop.  It’s actually very much alive, global and well, easily found at any hole-in-the-wall Philly, Chi-town, New York or D.C. tabletop lounge or online stream near you.  I mean, damn, all you have to do is stream a Fat Jon, Madlib, Nujabes or MF Doom Pandora channel.  The search for quality performances beyond a commercial radio fix is made difficult by station-changing laziness.

It’s the same issue with African American pundits and political analysts.  Martin is out; but, sources already had former Obama green jobs guy Van Jones picked out as a replacement.  Is it about racism rearing its ass this time?  Or, is it changing the label on bottle?  Who knows?  But, CNN still gives plenty of color on a normal day, from Brazile to strategist Jamal Simmons to pollster Cornell Belcher to political scientist Jason Johnson.  Some days, it’s like a fleshed out suit-and-tie bite off BET’s 106 and Park, minus quirky, corny urban swag and smirk.

The problem, however, is not the lack of contributors.  We miss the point.  Neither is it regarding a lack of standard news anchors.  At issue is who represents the face of a network.  Who is the flagship?  Martin’s ouster happened just as Jake Tapper came in as the network’s new shiny white knight. A channel over, MSNBC gave male Rachel Maddow stunt-double nerd Chris Hayes a prime daily slot, pushing out cranky union goon Ed Schultz.  While folks were salting over the demise of one Black contributor, the networks kept serving up the same steady and stale diet of mostly White male hosts reserved for the big shows.

For the most part, snarky stripe-tie White dudes are still the Kings of Politics, save Rev. Al Sharpton’s lone attempt at crashing through the brick ceiling. But, even questions linger about whether or not Politics Nation’s geriatric picket line rant can keep up.  Clearly, the Tappers, the Hayes, the Scarboroughs, Maddows, Matthews and others are the universal standard as long as the eye can see. It’s their game. Like that scene out of Morning Glory where an irritated producer played by Rachel McAdam’s crashes in on a bar party of old White guy broadcast icons who don’t seem as surprised or perturbed about it as she is.  Mainstream media gets a kick out of making fun of diversity-deficient Republicans who ignore obvious demographic changes, yet the executives, producers, editors and bookers are just as blind about it as Mitt Romney was in 2012.

Black media could be the antidote. But, that’s just as stuck, just as far behind and just as not-really-all-that-much-of-an-alternative.  Stung by perennially “low budgets” and a penchant for picking safe rather than being creative, Black cable won’t be headed anywhere anytime soon towards a viable spot where the community’s many talking heads could comfortably land.  And, just like mainstream cable, Black networks can’t view politics without polarizing it into a moldy cookie dough of the usual “left versus right” format. Independents need not apply.  In reality, we find the “alternatives” plagued by an inability to take risks and shake out of trendy info-tainment tricks and gimmicks with the same-o’, same-o’.  There’s little chance that will change. No wonder, as the late Reginald Lewis opined, White guys get to have all the real fun.

Kimani Gray

While Mayor Michael Bloomberg has promised to conduct a “full and fair investigation” into the death of Kimani Gray, the 16-year-old shot and killed by NYPD officers in Brooklyn earlier this month, his plans to offer condolences to Gray’s parents have proved unsuccessful.

The New York Times reports Bloomberg has attempted to reach out to the mother, Carol Gray, on numerous occasions but she remains uninterested in speaking with the mayor.

“I give eulogies at cops’ funerals,” Bloomberg said. “I call parents when their kids are killed. You know, sometimes I don’t get to them. There’s this 16-year-old. I’ve tried, and the woman, the mother, is not taking any calls, changed her phone number so I can’t, but I did reach out.”

Bobby BrownBobby Brown and his wife Alicia Etheredge-Brown have filed a $1 million defamation lawsuit against The National Enquirer‘s parent company American Media and author Derrick Handspike, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The lawsuit was filed on Monday in New York federal court, claiming that a March 2012 article suggested an “inappropriate affair” between Bobby and ex-wife Whitney Houston that would shock the world and result in the reunion of the notoriously troubled couple.

The story, sourced back to “close friend” Handspike, stated, “Whitney Houston was set to stun the world by walking down the aisle once again with her badboy ex-hubby Bobby Brown.”

The story continued:

“They were planning a small wedding, probably in Las Vegas with just the two of them and their daughter Krissi.

“Bobby told me, ‘The world may have thought we were history, but the reality is we were never really apart. We’ve never stopped loving each other.’”

The article was published little more than a month after Houston’s untimely death, as well as during Bobby’s engagement to Alicia. The pair married in Hawaii last June.

American Media has yet to release a statement.

High Court Skeptical Of Federal Marriage Law

Courtesy of The Associated Press

Kevin CoyneIn a major gay rights case, the Supreme Court indicated Wednesday it could strike down the law that prevents legally married gay couples from receiving a range of federal benefits that go to other married people.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, often the decisive vote in close cases, joined the four more liberal justices in raising questions about a provision of the federal Defense of Marriage Act that is being challenged at the court.

Kennedy said the law appears to intrude on the power of states that have chosen to recognize same-sex marriages. Other justices said the law creates what Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg called two classes of marriage, full and “skim-milk marriage.”

The federal law affects a range of benefits available to married couples, including tax breaks, survivor benefits and health insurance for spouses of federal employees.

It still is possible the court could dismiss the case for procedural reasons, though that prospect seemed less likely than it did in Tuesday’s argument over gay marriage in California.

The motivation behind the 1996 federal law, passed by large majorities in Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton, was questioned repeatedly by Justice Elena Kagan.

She read from a House of Representatives report explaining that the reason for the law was “to express moral disapproval of homosexuality.” The quote produced an audible reaction in the courtroom.
