Lil Wayne Released From Hospital Following Health Scare

Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne is reportedly resting comfortably at home after spending six days in the hospital following a serious health scare that landed him in the intensive care unit.

On Monday, Young Money Entertainment president and fellow rapper Jermaine “Mack Maine” Preyan sent out announcement via Twitter, stating the multiplatinum artist had been released from Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles where he was admitted last Tuesday.

“Thanks to Cedar Sinai for everything!!! @LilTunechi has been officially been released and is headed home….God is great,” Mack Maine said.

Bryan “Birdman” Williams, co-founder of Cash Money Records, called into The Angie Martinez Show to confirm that Wayne had only one seizure and was never discharged last week, as reported. Williams acknowledged Wayne’s previous seizures as well.

He also cleared up any and all rumors.

“It didn’t have nothing to do with drugs,” Williams said in the radio interview. “No such thing like that. It’s how hard he works. How much dedication he gives to his music and his fans. It had nothing to do with drugs. No such thing like that, to me. It was nothing about no drugs. Just needs to get some rest and relax. He’ll be back, normal like everyone else.”

Why Beyoncé Needs to Learn a Lesson on Greatness

It’s fair to say folks are pretty split on the recent track released by King Bey titled, “Bow Down/I Been On.” And what I mean by split is, people either love it (die-hard fans) or hate it (that would be me.) Now by no means do I want this to become a Beyoncé bashing piece. I’m not necessarily her biggest fan, but I do admire the woman’s work ethic, and I’ll admit when I’m going hard at the gym, it’s not rare to find me listening to her records. She’s talented, there’s no denying that and it’s safe to say she’s the best at what she does – but that’s exactly why I’m mad about her latest musical attempt.

If no one can really deny that she’s currently the best in the biz, is it really necessary for her to proclaim that she’s the best? And if she’s supposedly referring to her select “haters” who are beneath her, is it even worth Mrs. Carter’s time to spell it out for them by singing lines like: “Respect that/Bow down, bitches”? I always thought greatness was shown by being great rather than having to convince people that you’re great. Does Usain Bolt walk around saying he’s the fastest man in the world? No, his Olympic records and gold medals do the talking for him. Does Oprah walk around proclaiming she’s the richest black woman in the world? No, but landing on Forbes‘ top earners list, year after year, is evidence enough. So why isn’t being a multi-talented artist who’s admired by millions enough evidence that Beyoncé’s winning?

Michael Jordan’s Alleged Baby Mama Drops Paternity Suit, Releases Statement

Michael JordanAfter all the fuss of filing a paternity suit against former basketball star Michael Jordan, his alleged baby mama has dismissed the case that claimed he fathered her 16-year-old son. The development comes after the Hall of Famer’s request to drop the suit was denied.

According to TMZ, Pamela Smith filed court documents asking a judge to dismiss her case and was granted without prejudice, meaning she has to option to file again.

In a statement released Tuesday, Smith’s lawyer Randy Kessler said:

“Ex-Girlfriend of Michael Jordan, Ms. Pamela Smith authorized a dismissal of the current suit against Mr. Jordan. She began this case without an attorney, did her best to file what she believed to be a legally appropriate case. She then hired our firm. Our firm reviewed the legal posture of the case, the history of the case, the filed pleadings and the relevant law. Ms. Smith has relied on our advice, has carefully considered the pro’s and cons of continuing the case and has determined that dismissal at this time, without prejudice, is what is in her son’s best interests.”

In February, Smith filed the paternity suit in Fulton County, GA that claimed she became pregnant after having sex with Jordan while he was still married to his ex-wife Juanita Vanoy. In June 1996, Smith gave birth to Grant Pierce Jay Jordan Reynolds.

While she demanded DNA testing, Jordan stood by his statement that the claim was a “shameless, bad faith attempt to abuse the legal system.”

Don’t Count Out The Crazies: In Politics, Anger Makes Things Happen

rand paul
By Charles Ellison

President Obama’s long game approach wants the good-guy-always-wins ending once the film credits start rolling.  But, “charm offensive” or none, it doesn’t quite work out that way.  Just like he won his historic 2008 election on anger and frustration with nearly a full decade of Bush status-quo, he managed to pull off a 2012 upset based on the assumption of his authenticity versus that other guy’s lack thereof.  Notions of authenticity are also based on anger, drawn from a hint of fear.  The world has been such an uncertain place to live in since the recession that the public chooses what it knows over what it can’t touch.

Between November and last week, the president appears to have either forgotten that or made a choice to opt for runway swagger.  Either way, the miscalculation is clear.  When the sequester hit, the assignment of blame didn’t matter because it was still a product of Washington.  And, everything and everyone in Washington is as radioactive as a dirty bomb set off in a crowded mall.  It wasn’t so much the sequester as it was the dysfunction it arose from; buck stops with the brother at the top, the microscope of constantly looping media micromanagement hanging over his graying head.

Maybe the onus of getting little done should fall on Republicans, by simple virtue of legislative process.  That’s how it works. But, there were two instances in consecutive months where the president blew his own spot up and acknowledged executive complicity.  There was what one expert claimed was the “defeatist” State of the Union beg for a gun control vote that, in reality, is an admission that none will pass anytime soon.   The other moment was a few days of cool pose stroll through Capitol Hill hallways, including the countless stops and profile pics while waving at cameras.  Each moment corresponds with noticeable dips in polling currency for the president, from a of 54 percent approval after Christmas to a low of 48 percent post-“charm offensive.”

As patronizing and that’s-all-you-got insulting as that might seem, it speaks to the tendency of this president to sometimes underestimate or dismiss the extent of general dissatisfaction.  True: he can afford that luxury given that governance is more important than constantly poking for public acceptance.  But, this White House will have to do more than hope its overtures of bi-partisanship will crowd out the noisy media cycle of conservative wolf packs snapping for a future electoral kill all last week.   Cute is out.  The public hungers for a little grunge and candor in their politics, as much as we gasp at the latest gaffe.

Closer attention should be paid to the anger boiling every time a tight wallet drives by $4/gallon gas prices.  Debates in Washington seem happily preoccupied with questions on the debt and the deficit.  Wonks talk till their red and blue in the face about how much government spends and how much we should be making.  Yet, no one wants to talk about how high shit really is – over 30 percent of Americans, according to a recent YouGov poll, worry about paying their mortgage.  From the rent to the grocery bill to five-minute parking and the $100 movie night, we seem to pay a fee for everything except air.  But, keep it up and we’ll see that coming to a plastic bottle near you.

The bottom line is that angry is still in.  The end of the political equation is which candidate learns how to best harness that angry energy.  Republicans continue besting Democrats with this, and they are already considering new tactical shifts in that direction. A recent poll commissioned by the conservative YG Network urged the GOP to talk less about the debt, deficit and spending cuts and dwell more on kitchen table issues like gas prices and education.

The White House, therefore, shouldn’t count out the crazies and will have to, perhaps, take on a little crazy face to counter any assault. For months, country club Republicans and Ivy League Democrats ridiculed the rise of Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) as a brief visceral blip on the crazy screen.  But, Paul’s persistence – while uncomfortably reminiscent of a clumsy comic book villain – paid off when the White House had no choice but to formally respond to his 13-hour long filibuster outburst on the Senate floor.

While Paul could very well end up just as much a flavor of the next month as his curmudgeon Hobbit of a father Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), we can’t discount the fact that he’s a step ahead of the elder.  There’s an unscripted and unpredictable nature that will appeal to the angry and cynical masses, the appearance of a politician unafraid of having nothing to lose.  Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) gives off that scent, as well, and 2016 could see the rise of insurgent voters and rebel candidates who piss on manicured candidates who look good in straw polls, get six figure book deals or are smooth when they reach for bottled water during a televised fast-talk. Republicans should keep an eye on it as their party threatens to fracture into a third way spin-off; Democrats may want to keep track of younger idealists who want strong, no-nuance positions on domestic drones and legalized marijuana.  People of color will want to watch it all cautiously so they don’t end up getting trapped in the middle.

The Spinners Singer Bobbie Smith Dead At 76

The Spinners

Bobbie Smith, lead singer of the R&B/soul group The Spinners, has died due to health complications. He was 76.

A statement released Monday by the manager of the popular singing group said Smith passed away Saturday morning in Orlando due to complications from pneumonia and influenza. Back in November, he was diagnosed with lung cancer.

“Bobby was a regular, down-to-earth, good-natured person, the kind of guy who’d give you his shirt. And ever since I’ve known him, he was just a natural showman,” Henry Fambrough said in a statement. He is the only surviving member of the group’s original members.

Smith helped form The Spinners (also know as Detroit Spinners) in 1960 with fellow members Bill Henderson, Pervis Jackson and Fambrough, later signing with Motown. He is noted for his lead vocals on the group’s 1961 record “That’s What Girls Are Made For.”

The group reached the height of their success after signing with Atlantic Records in 1972 and garnered hits such as “I’ll Be Around,” “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love,” “One of a Kind (Love Affair),” “Games People Play,” and more.

Smith reportedly gave his last performance this past February on the Soul Train Cruise.

Funeral services for Smith are scheduled for next Monday in Detroit.

Does Jada Want a White Woman On Essence Cover

Last week, Jada Pinkett Smith used her Facebook page to take on Americans’ treatment of young celebrities. On Monday, taking pains to make it clear that she’s “thinking outside the box” and that “these possibilities may be realistic or unrealistic,” the actress wonders this: If black women expect white women to include us in the spaces that they control (mainstream magazine covers, for example), at what point must we do the same for them?

Here’s how she put it:

“I also want to make it clear that there is no finger pointing here. I pose this question with the hope that it opens a discussion about how we can build a community for women based upon us all taking a deeper interest in one another. An interest where skin color, culture, and social class does not create barriers in sharing the commonality of being … women.”

Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Floyd Mayweather signed a blockbuster six-fight deal with Showtime Networks in February that is expected to be worth more than $200 million if Mayweather fights all six bouts. The agreement sent shock waves through the boxing world, as Mayweather became boxing’s pound-for-pound king and highest-paid athlete in the world fighting for 14 years exclusively on HBO and HBO PPV. His nine pay-per-view fights on HBO PPV events generated 9.6 million buys and $543 million in television revenue, according to the network.

The fallout from the decision was felt yesterday when HBO announced that it would no longer buy fights from Golden Boy Promotions, which is the largest promoter in the U.S. Golden Boy has promoted Mayweather’s recent fights in conjunction with Mayweather Promotions.

Roland Martin Exits CNN

Roland MartinRoland Martin is waving goodbye to CNN as the latest news contributor to leave the network.

The journalist/media personality confirmed the news with a Twitter follower Tuesday morning, stating his last day will be April 6. The reason behind his departure seems to be CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker, who began his assignment in January to help the sinking network.

“New boss wants his own peeps,” he wrote. CNN spokesperson Edie Emery confirmed that Martin’s contract will end in the first week of April.

During his time with the network, Martin contributed to several shows that included The Situation Room and AC360, among others. He also hosts TV One’s Washington Watch with Roland Martin, which covers the important issues affecting the Black community.

Martin has yet to make an official statement.

In late February, fellow reporter Soledad O’Brien parted ways with CNN’s morning show but will continue to work on documentaries (Black in America, Latino in America) with the network on a nonexclusive basis.

CNN has also let go long-time contributors James Carville, Mary Matalin and Bill Bennett.

Let Beyoncé Be Human … Damn

UPTOWN_beyonce_bow_downBy Tracy Clayton

Beyoncé leaked some new music Sunday night. The Internet whipped itself into an instant frenzy and has been there ever since. The track is a snippet of two songs, entitled “Bow Down” and “I Been On”; it gives us an even fiercer Sasha Fierce — bold, arrogant, cocky, and gasp — cursing!

It’s a side of Beyoncé that we aren’t used to seeing, and some of us aren’t dealing with it very well. It’s kind of like when we discovered that Judy from “Family Matters” was up in her room making porn this whole time — it’s kind of a shock. “Bow Down” features Bey with the haughty bravado of your favorite rapper, shouting out her native Houston before the lyrics come in. In it, she addresses her haters, growling “Bow down, bitches … this my shit.” The homage, and cursing, continues on “I Been On,” a bass-heavy chopped and screwed cut that is so Houston, you just might get up and get yourself some gold teeth afterward. Some note that she sounds a bit like Kanye, spitting about “gold ass rangs” and “gold ass chains” and poppin’ bottles in the club.

I will admit that it took me some getting used to.  While I’m not a rabid fan, I definitely love Beyoncé’s music. It was odd to hear her demand for herself the adoration that is already given so freely — and I didn’t like it. It was too much. It demolished the line between confidence and conceit, and while it didn’t keep me from dancing (those are some cold ass beats, after all), it turned me off.

UPTOWN_beyonce_snarl_rockets_capAnd I wasn’t the only one.  Though most of my twitter feed kowtowed and offered their wigs willingly, there was a fraction that chose to stay standing, thank you very much. This eventually led to a discussion on whether or not someone can use the word “bitch” and still be a feminist.

And at the core of all this, in my humble opinion, is the Madonna/whore dichotomy — the idea that all women can only fall into one of two categories: sweet, virginal, and saintly, OR brazen, sexual, and wanton. This mode of thinking represses women by limiting their space and ability to be their full selves. The idea that we must be either this or that puts pressure on us to ignore the other parts of ourselves to become what we’re expected to be. Suggesting that Beyoncé isn’t allowed to be brash or have a temper or be less than perfect is insane and unfair.  Humans are terribly complex creatures, and Beyoncé is human, no matter how easily we may forget that. I mean, who among us hasn’t had that moment of “Damn I look good!” before a night on the town? Let her be who she is.

With “Bow Down/I Been On,” Beyoncé is claiming some space to be her full self, staking out her identity (“Don’t think I’m just his little wife”), and celebrating her hometown roots in a homegrown style (chopped and screwed music originated in Houston). Swimming in her unchecked accent and reciting UGK lyrics, I personally think that this is Beyoncé at her most human, relaxed, and relatable. She doesn’t seem as polished, manufactured, and animatronic as she usually does to me, maybe because that manufactured version strips her of her natural grit and realness. Sure I was thrown off by it in the beginning, but I got used to it and dealt with it. And that is our job; when women define themselves, we have to deal with it.

In conclusion, Beyoncé don’t give a fuck. And good for her.

I don’t have to tell you that Steubenville is all over the news.

I don’t have to tell you that the fact that Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond, the two teenagers convicted of raping a sixteen year old girl, were only sentenced to a combined three years in juvenile prison, is a fucking joke. Each will serve a year for the rape itself; Mays will serve an additional year for “illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material.”

I probably don’t even have to tell you that the media treatment of this trial has been a perfect, if utterly sickening, example of rape culture, with its focus on how difficult and painful this event has been for the rapists who raped a 16-year-old girl then bragged about it on social media.

Rapper Attempts To Sacrifice Friend In Hopes Of Joining The Illuminati, Becoming A Star

Wafeeq-Sabir-El-AminA two-day trial slated to begin in June was scheduled by a Henrico County judge last Thursday for an aspiring Virginia rapper by the name of Wafeeq Sabir El-Amin,27, who is accused of shooting his friend, reports the Richmond Times Dispatch. What really perplexed investigators was the alleged motive behind the violent act. According to prosecutors, El-Amin believed that murdering his friend would grant him membership into the Illuminati and ultimately hip hop stardom.

“You are my sacrifice,” are the words that El-Amin is alleged to have said to his friend before firing a shot towards his head. The search warrant revealed that the victim woke up to see El-Amin standing over him with the gun. Things didn’t exactly go as the defendant may have hoped, though. According to reports, the bullet struck El-Amin’s friend in his hand, but he was able wrangle the gun from his attacker, shooting him in the stomach before fleeing.

Jennifer Hudson, Octavia Spencer

Following Lifetime’s 2011 critically-acclaimed original movie Five, the women’s network has called on Academy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning actresses Jennifer Hudson and Octavia Spencer for their latest film Call Me Crazy: A Five Film.

The celebrity-heavy project will tell the interwoven stories of five women who support and build powerful relationships while dealing with a loved one who struggles with mental illness. Each of the five short stories are named after the title character– Lucy, Grace, Allison, Eddie and Maggie.

Related: Star Clique

Lucy follows a law student who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and fights through with the help of her new friend, medication and her psychotherapist (Spencer). Grace will center on a teenage daughter whose mother battles with bipolar disorder. Allison will bring in a few laughs with a short about “Lucy” returning home from inpatient treatment and spoiling her sister’s plan to introduce her new boyfriend to their parents. Eddie will tell the story of a wife dealing with the depression of her comedic husband. Finally, Maggie will go inside the world of a female veteran (Hudson) who returns home from war to her son and father with PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder).

“When we started researching this topic, we were all surprised to learn that one in four adults lives with some sort of mental illness,” said actress and the film’s executive producer Jennifer Aniston. “With so many people dealing with this in their private lives, there is still so much stigma and shame. It’s time we bring it out of the closet and into the light of day.”

Along with Aniston, Marta Kauffman, Kristin Hahn, Kevin Chinoy and Francesca Silvestri will serve as executive producers. The special project will be directed by Laura Dern, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bonnie Hunt, Ashley Judd and Sharon Maguire.

Melissa Leo, Brittany Snow, Sarah Hyland, Sofia Vassilieva, Ernie Hudson, Jason Ritter, Jean Smart, Lea Thompson, Melanie Griffith and Chelsea Handler will also star in the film.

Call Me Crazy will premiere Saturday, April 20, at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime.

Tiger Dating: Should Black Women Care?

UPTOWN_tiger_woods_girlfriendCourtesy of The Root

A couple of years ago, I turned down an interview opportunity with a major network for the first, but not last, time. The reason was the topic. The producer wanted to know if I, as a black woman, was willing to weigh in on the fact that the Tiger Woods scandal that was then unfolding, in which the golf great was revealed to have strayed from his marriage with multiple women, seemed to confirm that he had a preference for women who are not black.

To which I replied, “I’m sorry. Are you expecting black women to be offended he didn’t choose to cheat with us?”

Of course that wasn’t the producer’s point, and of course I knew that. But I wasn’t interested in being part of such a discussion nonetheless. The discussion to which I am referring is the one about how I as a black woman am supposed to feel about yet another high-profile athlete, musician, actor or businessman not only dating or marrying someone of a different race, but appearing to do so exclusively.

While many retired athletes go on to enjoy careers in sports broadcasting, take on professional coaching positions or simply sit on their millions, former NBA star Adrian Dantley has chosen a different path.

The hall of famer and Olympic gold medalist is spending these days as a crossing guard at Eastern Middle School and New Hampshire Estates Elementary School in Silver Spring, MD. Dantley, who is reportedly still worth millions, says he started working in September to pass the time, reap the health care benefits and help children.

“It’s not beneath me. I’m a regular guy.” said the former Utah Jazz star. “[...] It definitely has meaning and I feel like I’m helping the community and it’s all about the kids.”
