On the Move: 2017 Nissan Rogue SV And Rogue One

2017 Nissan Rogue in Miami [Image: Ronda Racha Penrice]

By Ronda Racha Penrice

Prior to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, it’s quite possible that “rogue” conjured thoughts of Nissan. Its own origin story dates back to the 2008 model released in late 2007. Since then, it’s undergone an evolution of its own. And this year it was re-introduced.

uptown_nissan_rogue4

2017 Nissan Rogue SV AWD

I first glimpsed the  2017 Nissan Rogue at the Miami International Auto Show back in September when Nissan hosted the auto show’s kick-off party atop 1111 Lincoln Road for its big reveal. I didn’t experience the magic of the upgrade, however, until the Rogue One opening weekend.

Recognizing how innovative they both are, Nissan smartly partnered with Rogue One, which breaks away from the male-centered action mold to embrace girl power. And, behind the scenes, Lucasfilm creative executive Rayne Roberts helped bring it to the screen. A few days before my Rogue arrived, I caught Roberts as she spoke to a group of teenage boys post-film on how she went from working photo shoots at VIBE to joining Star Wars.

My 2017 Nissan Rogue SV AWD was impressive with its midnight jade exterior and almond interior. A little long in the front but snatched in the back, and just the right size, I couldn’t wait to jump in. Keeping with the girl power theme, I popped into She Who Dares.

uptown_she_who_dares

Kelli Coleman, Dr. Karmetria Burton, Tai Beauchamp, Valeisha Butterfield Jones & Elayne Fluker

She Who Dares, which targets women entrepreneurs, is the brainstorm of its founders Kelli Coleman, the ad exec who helped expand her family’s multicultural ad firm, and TV personality/lifestyle expert Tai Beauchamp. For the Atlanta installment, they cooled their heels at Bloomingdale’s at Lenox with fellow boss chicas Dr. Karmetria Burton, director of supplier diversity for Delta Airlines, CEO/Founder of WEEN (Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network) Valeisha Butterfield Jones, and moderator Elayne Fluker, a serial entrepreneur who hosts a daily podcast for her Support Is Sexy network tailored to women entrepreneurs.

uptown_nissan_rogue3

Studio Movie Grill (SMG) Duluth, Georgia

The real she-bang of course was the motion picture event itself: a VIP, invite-only Rogue One: A Star Wars Story courtesy of Nissan!! Not surprisingly, Rogue One was a hard ticket to get opening weekend so Nissan bought out an entire theater at Studio Movie Grill in Duluth (just north of Atlanta) for their peeps! And they so had receipts: a Rogue One photo op with Stormtroopers, signage welcoming their “private screening event” guests.

uptown_nissan_rogue2

Movie screen at SMG Duluth

Nissan played no games and kicked off the festivities with their own Nissan Rogue One commercial with the 2017 Rogue doing battle. Then they welcomed guests with a thoughtful message and an invitation to join The Rogue Toy Drive before Rogue One took full force.

On the real road, the Rogue handled wonderfully, driving so much smoother than I remembered. Maybe it was the intuitive all-wheel drive feature which knows the difference between the car cruising and cornering. A touch of a button changes the modes of driving from say Eco to Sport. And the button to open the trunk and more can now be found at the bottom left of the steering wheel. Other winning features include ample trunk space, room for five, and a crystal-clear sound system.

uptown_nissan_rogue5

2017 Nissan Rogue SV AWD

Push button start is standard but I worried that I hadn’t turned off the car because it took a minute for lights out. Starting the Rogue remotely rocked. Plus it was safe: braking was easy, the blind-spot warning is one of the most effective and least intrusive I’ve witnessed thus far.

How much for a Rogue with an average of 27 mpg you ask? Would you believe just under $30,000 with a MSRP starting at a little over $25,000?

Like Rogue One, the Nissan Rogue has lots of holiday cheer. But better than its film companion, this Rogue has plans to spread joy all throughout 2017 and beyond!

5 Questions With Producer Harvey Mason Jr. Of ‘SING’

uptown_sing_posterBy Chinwe Ugoezi

UPTOWN had the pleasure of chatting with Grammy Award-winning songwriter, record
producer, and movie producer Harvey Mason Jr. He discussed his work as executive producer of SING, working with longtime friend Jennifer Hudson, and the important message behind the film. Mason Jr. is the mastermind behind records for renowned artists like Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Justin Timberlake, and Chris Brown, as well as production for films such as Dreamgirls, Straight Outta Compton, and Pitch Perfect.

uptown_sing_jennifer_hudson_harvey_mason_jr

UPTOWN: How did you get involved in SING?
Harvey Mason Jr.: I had just finished working on music for Straight Outta Compton and the James Brown movie (Get on Up) for Universal Pictures. They asked if I would consider being a part of the project. I got the rundown on the movie and the important music played in it, which made me excited to come on board.

U: The soundtrack is so diverse. Was it tough putting it together? How was the process of recording the “Golden Slumbers” remake with Jennifer Hudson?
HMJ: I loved it, that’s one of the challenges and why I was so excited about it. It was a lot of music. I wanted all the music to sound similar like it came from the same movie, but I wanted each character to have their own sound. We recorded about 80 something songs and 65 are on the soundtrack. I worked with the producers of the film first to get the demo just right, then I worked with Jennifer on the vocal. The team then went back and reanimated to match Jennifer’s voice to the scene. It was a really cool process.

U: How was it working with the actors, did anyone surprise you vocally?
HMJ: All the actors surprised me, you walk into it thinking the worst. There’s no way that Scarlett Johansson and Reese Witherspoon can act, be glamorous, cool, and also sing! There’s just too much talent. The actors are so professional, I think it’s because they’re used to dealing with a director. It was surprising but you expect greatness from a cast like this.

U: I know you’ve worked on a lot of movies so far. Which one do you like to work on more, movies or with artists?
HMJ: There are different challenges. I like the diversity of doing both. It’s fun being creative and not having to worry about anything, which is the songwriting process. It’s also fun to work with a director, producer, and a cast of actors. I can draw from the times I’ve worked with all the legends like Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and Elton John. I also draw from my time working with actors like Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, and Matthew McConaughey. That’s what is unique about the job, I get to do a little bit of both.

U: What can we expect from SING?
HMJ: You can expect great music, great vocal performances, and a lot of fun. It’s an emotional roller coaster. You’re excited, somewhat sad at some points, then you’re lifted back up. A lot of it is done through music and that’s why I wanted to be involved in this project. The audience can definitely expect to leave with the feeling of “I can accomplish anything, I can chase my dreams, I can be who I want to be.” Even though it’s an animated movie, it tells an important message, especially in a time in our society where people are trying to figure out who they are and what they should be doing. That’s why I think the movie will resonate with people.

SING hits theaters December 21st.

Why You Should Visit Jamaica Now

0
0

Most travelers and tourists have heard wonders of Jamaica’s all inclusive resorts but there is a Jamaica beyond the beach waiting to be discovered.

Goblin Hill Villas Port Antonio, Jamaica

I have been wishing to visit Jamaica since I was a child and my mother returned from a vacation in the Home Of All Right conch shell in hand with pictures and stories of the vivid land. Each time I heard the sounds of the island country from One Love to Three Little Birds or saw the majestic beauty of the Caribbean jewel in films like The Blue Lagoon that desire would ripen.

I thought my longing was fulfilled in an unforgettable trip filled with adventures, exquisite foods and breathtaking views but I realized that one trip to Jamaica will simply keep you wanting more.

Travel Blogger Angela B. Logan Frenchman's Cove Beach Jamaica

Here’s Why You Should Visit Jamaica Now.

As my plane circled Norman Manley International Airport amid a sunset of deep oranges and yellows I was able to see the vibrant green that stood out on the lush Blue Mountains that was apparent even at dusk.  When you lay eyes on Jamaica and when your feet hit the ground your senses will immediately tell you that the third largest island in the Caribbean is alive.

My jaunt in Jamaica was filled with pop culture delights and would take me off the beaten path but was guided by what I view as the unofficial ambassador of Jamaica Lyndon Taylor of Finn Partners and was complimented by a must have while in Jamaica; transportation, excursions and guided tours from Paradise Travels in Jamaica. With guides like Wilford Burgess a.k.a. “Willie” they don’t just take you to the sights they go the extra mile to help you experience them.

Caribbean Cuisine

My experience kicked off in Jamaica with a tasting of the culture at Sweetwood Jerk Joint. Jamaica is definitely the place to discover authentic jerk. You will immediately smell mouth watering jerk meat being cooked that ranges from pork, chicken, sausage, lamb and fish. I tasted my first festival at the Emancipation Park eatery and more delectable sides of breadfruit and bammy.

Sweetwood Jerk Joint

There is something that will tempt every taste bud in Jamaica from national dishes like ackee and saltfish to baked and boiled plantain. There is simply an astounding array of tropical fruits that grow all over Jamaica and perfectly compliment the spice rubbed meats and Red Stripe beer.

By the time that we hit the path to make our way to Port Antonio, Portland after our luscious meal nightfall had taken over and I couldn’t see the landscape as much as I could feel it. I soon learned that is part of the spirit of the what some call the Jamaican riviera. It is all the feels.

The mountainous journey was both bumpy and smooth will endless curves and vegetation that frequently spilled over onto the road and the fragrant smell of an array of fruits lingers in the air.

Villa Vacation

My stay in Jamaica started off at Goblin Hills Villas. Sitting on 12 acres of breathtaking lawns and gardens Goblin Hills Villas is located in one of the unspoiled corners of Jamaica in San San Port Antonio, Jamaica. You step outside your villa into unparalleled beauty and are able to see where the Blue Mountains meet the Caribbean sea.

Goblin Hills Port Antonio, Jamaica

It juxtaposes being the perfect place for both lovers and lovely families. Each villa is staffed with a housekeeper to prepare and serve meals, do your shopping and carry out all housekeeping duties. After a delightful night where you are lulled to sleep by the sounds of the sea and crickets nestled into the lush vegetation you will awaken to a breakfast buffet served on your own patio. The energy you need to begin a day of play.

Angela B. Logan Goblin Hill Villas Jamaica

Adventure Playground

Port Antonio, Jamaica is not for the sightseer. It is for the doer! There is plenty to see but in Port Antonio you are invited to experience Jamaica’s playground.

Reach Falls

Living just a 15 minute drive from one of the top waterfalls in the world Niagara Falls, I am definitely a fan of the moving works of mother nature’s art. But, living so close to one of the best in order to impress me there has to be a wow factor. Jamaica’s Reach Falls has it.

Reach Falls Jamaica

Bring your climbing shoes and swim suit because you can actually climb to the upper pools, access the top of the cascades and feel the water tumbling over the limestone with your hands. Nestled into the rainforest, simply taking the walk to get to Reach Falls is stunningly beautiful.

Travel Blogger Angela B. Logan Reach Falls, Jamaica

The beauty of the region has attracted Hollywood for years. Films including Tom Cruise’s Cocktails and the remake of Lord of the Flies featured Reach Falls. Visiting Reach Falls is both a rush and relaxing at the same time.

The Blue Lagoon

Bucket list! The Blue Lagoon has been one of the spots that I have always wanted to visit after watching the film named after one of the most beautiful spots in Jamaica once known as “The Blue Hole”.  Nature has changed the way the landscape looks from the film a bit but the waters that launched Brooke Shields’ movie career are still breathtaking. The turquoise blue water changes color a bit from every shade of emerald to a royal blue as freshwater springs meet the seawater. After passing by the shops featuring conch shells, fresh made foods and island apparel you can take a boat ride to tour the lagoon or simply dive into the water swim until you hit the sapphire colored waters.

The Blue Lagoon

Frenchman’s Cove Beach

Frolic in paradise at Frenchman’s Cove Beach. Located in the lush parish of Portland, Jamaica Frenchman’s Cove Beach is a small piece of heaven. It is one of the island’s best white sand beaches. Walk the glistening white sand that runs into a small blue lagoon and is flanked by two small cliffs and dense vegetation. You have to take a swing in the lagoon before having a relaxing lunch at Anna Banana. The tropical beauty of Frenchman’s Cove is what attracted Hollywood for another Tom Cruise film ‘Knight and Day’ which also starred Cameron Diaz.

Angela B. Logan Frenchman's Cove

Luxury Living

Jamaica’s lushest parish of Portland is an insider’s dream with luxury villas that rival the beauty of the surroundings.

The Trident Hotel and Trident Castle

The Trident Hotel in Port Antonio, Jamaica is one of the best luxury villa experiences in all of Jamaica. The Trident Hotel is literally set on the edge of the Caribbean Sea and is a mix in the ultimate in contemporary luxury and retro elegance.

The Trident Hotel

You will live like a celebrity in The Trident’s spacious villas each come equipped with oceanfront porticos and private soaking pools. The hotel features a helicopter landing pad for those who don’t wish to take the drive up the mountain and has amenities including a media lounge, gym, spa and a gorgeous private beach. You can dine at the eclectic Mike’s Supper Club which features music and exquisite cuisine. Celebrities like Jay-Z and Beyonce routinely vacation there.

The Trident Castle is simply majestic. The properties have been featured in the film The Mighty Quinn  starring Denzel Washington. The band Arcade Fire recorded their Album Reflektor there and Snoop Lion aka Snoop Dogg filmed his video ‘Here Comes the King’ there.

Angela B. Logan Trident Castle Jamaica

GeeJam Hotel and Studios

Music is a much a part of Jamaica as the lush vegetation is. Record producer Jon Baker was attracted to the island and found it a great escape to create but what he created was a place for the sound and for the sightseer to live. He founded both the GeeJam Recording Studio and the luxury GeeJam Hotel.

GeeJam Hotel

GeeJam Studios is the leading residential recording complex in the Caribbean. Artists can come and record an album, rent out the space or the entire property for a colossal  jam or to simply retreat into a creative space.

Angela B. Logan GeeJam Recording Studio

GeeJam Hotel and particularly the BushBar has been nominated by the Jamaican press as one of the “top ten most fascinating places to hang out.” And I could see why after spending the most amazing evening watching The Jolly Boys perform while enjoying the best meal of my trip when I was served curried shrimp over a bed of rice.

The Jolly Boys

Musicians like Katy Perry, John Legend, Florence and the Machine, Diplo, Alicia Keys, Drake, The Gorillaz, Snopp Dogg and Gwen Stefani have all recorded record albums on site at the resort’s state-of-the-art recording studio. Stars like Amy Winehouse and spent extended time at GeeJam Hotel while recording. Geejam is nestled in the heart of the bush but is surrounded by modern technology and chic living.

GeeJam BushBar

Kingston, Jamaica

When visiting Jamaica, many have not viewed Kingston as one of the top destinations. However, the historic buildings, museums, culture and food from having Sunday Brunch at Terra Nova a beloved Kingston tradition, to having lunch at M10 in a chill open air setting and more it all tells a different story and should be part of every travelers plans while in Jamaica.

Courtleigh Hotel and Suites in Kingston, Jamaica

I loved staying in the modern Courtleigh Hotel & Suites which is conveniently located from not only the Norman Manley International Airport but is also the perfect jump off point for visits to the old pirate city of Port Royal , the famous Devon House (where you have to go for the most delicious ice cream ever and shopping), the Bob Marley Museum (former home of the Reggae King), Lime Cay for swimming and the magnificent Blue Mountains (over 7000 feet above sea level) for hiking, birding or sight seeing tour.

Bob Marley Museum

You can’t go to Kingston without going to the Bob Marley Museum! The museum is located on the legendary site of the musician’s home and is an essential site to visit while in Jamaica. The house features 19th century architecture and you will immediately be greeted by the colors and art that have influenced the region.

Bob Marley Museum

Peter Tosh Museum

The Peter Tosh Museum honors the life and work of Peter Tosh, Jamaica’s global music legend and founding member of the critically acclaimed reggae group, the Wailers. The recently opened museum, located at the newly re–named Peter Tosh Square at The Pulse Centre on Trafalgar Road was opened with the 40th anniversary of the commercial release of the classic and prophetic hit single “Legalize It”.

Peter Tosh Museum

Jampro, Jafta and Propella.

Being a filmmaker, while visiting Jamaica not only the lush locales but the people and their vivid stories make it easy to see why this is a storytelling paradise. Having had the chance to visit the locations of historic films was definitely a highlight of my trip along with joining in on a Filmmakers Roundtable. The Jamaican investment and promotions agency Jampro is doing more to build the film industry in Jamaica. Jampro has has created unique opportunities to showcase filmmakers from Jamaica with their Propella program that was initiated with the Jamaican Film and Television Association (Jafta). I was able to screen the first short films from the Propella Project including Shoot The Girl, Silent Hearts, Shock Value, Sugar and Origins. Jafta believes as I do that the best way to promote Jamaica is through rich stories that the world is fascinated by.

Jampro Jamaica

Nightlife

Jamaica is a land of endless hills, coves and unique places to discover. This is something that holds true in every facet including the vibrant nightlife that you will find in Kingston. In the foothills of Kingston’s is one of it’s most unique and draw dropping clubs Kingston’s Dub Club. As you wind through, exclusive homes you will find the outdoor Dub Club that features with expansive views over the capital city.

Experience Club Kingston VIP Lounge

Before leaving Kingston you have to experience Club Kingston at the Norman Manley International Airport. Club Kingston offers fast track privileges through security and immigration, complimentary beverages, WiFi, Galaxy tablets, spa, and refreshments.

Pharrell, Questlove & More Respond To Kim Burrell’s Anti-LGBT Sermon

uptown_pharrell_williams_kim_burrell

On Dec. 30th, video surfaced of gospel singer Kim Burrell giving a hateful, anti-LGBT sermon. In the Facebook Live footage, Burrell said, “I came to tell you about sin. That sin nature … That perverted homosexual spirit, and the spirit of delusion and confusion, it has deceived many men and women … You as a man, you open your mouth and take a man’s penis in your face, you are perverted. You are a woman and will shake your face in another woman’s breast, you are perverted.”

As was to be expected, people were outraged by Burrell’s statements and brought the hate speech to Pharrell Williams‘s attention. Burrell is featured on Pharrell’s Hidden Figures song I See Victory. The pair are set to perform the song on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Jan. 5th.

Pharrell released the following statement after learning of Burrell’s sermon:

Both Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae, who star in Hidden Figures, re-posted Pharrell’s message.

Mega-producer Pharrell wasn’t the only celebrity to address Burrell’s statements. In a message shared on Instagram, Yolanda Adams condemned the sermon while defending her friend Bishop Eddie Long, who Burrell targeted in her attack. “As a Person who has Gay Relatives and Friends, I had to put these Words in the Atmosphere to combat the unwarranted and unproven attack on My Friend #BishopLong,” wrote Adams on Instagram. “Hateful Words are never profitable to the Cause of Christ in the World. Jesus said ‘They will know you by your Love.’ LOVE YALL.”

Chaka Khan took to Twitter to voice her frustration with ministries that promote hate and judgement over love and acceptance.

Questlove, in response to Burrell, called out Christians for being hypocritically unchristlike in a Twitter rant. Read his tweets on the next page …

CENTRIC ANNOUNCES QUEEN BOSS
THE FIRST BUSINESS COMPETITION REALITY SERIES FOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS

HOSTED BY TRACEY EDMONDS; CELEBRITY JUDGES PANEL INCLUDE VANESSA SIMMONS, LAUREN LAKE AND GUEST JUDGES KANDI BURRUSS, ANGELA BENTON, CARLA HALL, LISA PRICE, RAKIA REYNOLDS, MIKKI TAYLOR, ROBIN WILSON
————
QUEEN BOSS PREMIERES SATURDAY, JANUARY 14TH AT 10 P.M. ET ON CENTRIC
————

uptown_queen_boss1

NEW YORK, NY – DECEMBER 20, 2016 – Over 500,000 new businesses start up each month in the United States, and African-American women represent the fasting-growing group of entrepreneurs. But how do these women know if they have a great concept for a business, and if they have the skills to be a C.E.O.? CENTRIC answers this question on Saturday, January14 at 10 p.m. ET, in its first business competition-reality series Queen Boss.

Hosted by television personality and business woman Tracey Edmonds, Queen Boss is a new 8-episode series that strives to find the best and brightest African-American female entrepreneurs and have them compete for the business opportunity of a lifetime. Each week, 3 new female entrepreneurs will step into the “Queen Boss Conference Room” where they’ll pitch their products to a panel of esteemed celebrity judges including Vanessa Simmons, Lauren Lake, Kandi Burruss, Carla Hall, Mikki Taylor, Lisa Price, Rakia Reynolds, Angela Benton and Robin Wilson. The entrepreneurs are all impressive women, but the judges put them to the test to see who has the Product, Passion, and Potential to win the competition.

Here’s how it works. Each episode of Queen Boss features two distinct rounds of competition. In the first round, three of the competing entrepreneurs pitch their individual products to the judges who then deliberate with the host and eliminate one of the three entrepreneurs from the competition. In round two, the remaining two entrepreneurs are put to the ultimate test by competing against each other in a business challenge. The business challenges – which range from executing the perfect elevator pitch, out-trading the local professionals in the SoHo flea market scene, and creating a viral marketing on social media, — take the ladies out of the boardroom and into the streets of New York City to see if they can show the judges they have the passion, creativity, and brains to win. The 6 winners return for a semi-final and final round episodes, as the judges narrow the field and ultimately select one woman to win the grand prize $25,000 “Queen Boss Start-Up Fund” to get her business off the ground and the title of “Queen Boss!”

Queen Boss is produced by Ora TV, with Jon Housman the Executive Producer and Blake Levin the Showrunner and Executive Producer of the series. SWSI Media co-produced, with Heidi Lehmann, Marci Weisler, and Suzette Cabildo serving as Co-Executive Producers. Leonard Burnett, Jamie Schutz, and Lindsay Roth also produced.

On The Move: My Mazda Rendezvous

Mazda at the Montage Palmetto Bluff

Mazda at the Montage Palmetto Bluff

By Ronda Racha Penrice

Mazda has always seemed content to do its own thing. But even when rocking to the rhythm of one’s own drum, evolution is natural. That was evident when I got an invitation to join Mazda at the posh Montage Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, South Carolina between Savannah and Hilton Head a few months back.

I may have been flying to Savannah, in the same state I live by the way, but I had to travel through Charlotte to get there and the weather was so not cooperating. So due to the storm, my connecting flight goes poof when I land, greatly threatening my first-ever Mazda rendezvous. Thankfully my night was salvaged and I was able to get on an earlier flight than initially re-booked.

Arriving at the airport in Savannah put everything all the way back on track. A Mazda driver was there to greet me and another writer and off we went in the CX-9. A relaxing 45 minutes later we were at the expansive Montage Palmetto Bluff.

Montage Palmetto Bluff

Montage Palmetto Bluff

Check-in was a breeze. My room was so lovely I didn’t want to leave, but I had to freshen up quickly to get to the dinner-in-progress on the May River Lawn, which is located on the other side of the property. Ever so thoughtful, Mazda had asked for my dinner selection when it looked like I would be late and I was super glad I opted for the grilled vegetable strudel because it was absolutely delish. After dinner, we closed things out a bit at the Octagon Bar and Gathering Place, where I had to have a mule, my cocktail of choice for a couple of years now. Couldn’t imbibe too much or stay too late though.

Delightfully back in my room, I took advantage of the shower, caught up on some news, and scanned many of the great magazines. I got to bed quickly though because the Mazda Presentation was bright and early at 8:45 a.m. Now I can’t lie and say that was the time I arrived at the Somerset Chapel, but I am happy to report that I did not miss a word of presentation. Mazda had already piqued my interest with all the vehicles lined up outside. My biggest takeaways? Mazda is for people who actually like to drive and pride themselves on individualism. Consequently, the Mazda driver tends to be a college graduate just shy of a six-figure income.

2016 CX-9

2016 CX-9

When it was time to ride, I ended up paired with super-cool blogger Jo-Lynne Shane. We were charged with driving the 2016 CX-9 from the Montage Palmetto Bluff to the Harbour Town Lighthouse. Of course we had printed directions and still got off track because our conversation was so easy and fun, plus the drive was uber-smooth. We did, however, get back on track with both of us getting to ride and drive. Since Mazda is all about an active lifestyle experience, just that awaited us atThe Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island in Harbour Town.

Me on a bike at Sea Pines

Me on a bike at Sea Pines

Kayaking was the plan for some, but I went with bike riding. Weaving in and out of the pedestrians got interesting, and then there were the beautiful picturesque stops. For lunch, we rode right up to the Salty Dog Café where the kayakers joined us some time later.

After lunch, where Jake’s Hush Puppies were my fave, we were asked if we wanted to bike or ride back. Let’s just say I’m a rider! Switching it up, I traveled back to the Montage Palmetto Bluff in the 2017 CX-3 with Nitish S. Rele, who has a publication for Florida’s Indian American population, as well as a motoring one for Tampa Bay where he and his family are based. Since he had a flight to catch, I experienced how fast (within reason of course) it could roll, which was not bad at all, especially for a vehicle starting at under $20,000.

The Chapel Dock

The Chapel Dock

Rele didn’t miss that shuttle to the airport, but the wind-down shindig would have been well worth it. At the Chapel Dock, I enjoyed a few cocktails with the crew before settling in for a brief cocktail cruise, complete with dolphins popping out of the water, to Moreland’s for the Oyster Roast & Pig Pullin’. When we docked, champagne and delicious hors d’oeuvres welcomed us, as did a handsome set of Mazdas and the next wave of Mazda guests. The spread was an incredible experience, with a little something for everyone.

The next morning I had an early flight so breakfast was on-the-go. Of course the weather was so nice that I was back in Atlanta in no time. It’s 2017 and I can’t wait to get some alone time with the Mazda family! So stay tuned!!!

Who Is Serena Williams’s Fiancé, Alexis Ohanian?

By Khalil Waldron

Last week, after a relatively inconspicuous dating period, Serena Williams announced her engagement to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. The 33-year-old tech mogul has been thrust onto a new plateau of fame after becoming engaged to the 35-year-old tennis superstar. We know Serena’s story, the tennis prodigy who rose from the streets of Compton to become arguably the greatest and most prominent player of all time. However, we didn’t know much about her better half until now. Get to know Serena Williams’s fiancé, Alexis Ohanian …

Instagram Photo

The Tech Mogul
When he’s not charming megastars and creating popular websites, Ohanian is heavily involved with investing in tech start-ups. After he sold the social news platform Reddit, which he founded with his fellow University of Virginia alum Steve Huffman, Ohanian moved onto investment firms. Obviously a bright thinker both creatively and financially, Ohanian co–founded Initialized Capital, a venture capital fund based out of California that has raised millions in funds for next level tech companies.

Instagram Photo

The Best Selling Author
In 2013, Ohanian released his critically acclaimed book Without Their Permission: How the 21st Century Will Be Made, Not Managed. The Huffington Post described the work as “part call-to-action to a generation that is in desperate need to hear them” for his insightful ideas and inspiring speech. His was beloved by the masses for writing conversationally but still heavily informative, a manifesto for conquering the tools of the 21st century.

uptown_sabriya_stukes_alexis_ohanian

His Old Flame
Not much is known about Ohanian’s dating history prior to Serena, other than his long-term relationship with microbiologist Sabriya Stukes. Their relationship, which reportedly started in 2011, ended surprisingly close to the start of his relationship with Serena, which has some gossiping that he might have ditched his long-term girlfriend for a chance with the sports icon. Stukes, who Ohanian met by chance during his college days after she interrupted him playing video games, doesn’t seem bothered by the attention his new relationship is getting. But if she were, you couldn’t blame her because Serena and Ohanian are definitely the couple to watch in 2017.

Award-Worthy Recipes For Your Golden Globes Watch Party

0

The best of film and television will converge on The Beverly Hilton for the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, Jan. 8th. Since the awards ceremony is more relaxed than other awards shows, like the Oscars, it gives some of the most buttoned-up and reserved actors a chance to go off-script. And this year, you have the opportunity to join them … Well, sort of.

uptown_olivia_culpo

Lifestyle expert Olivia Culpo has shared her easy-to-make, award-worthy recipes, including one for the official Golden Globes cocktail, so you can join in the revelry by throwing your own Golden Globes watch party. Here’s what you should be sipping and nibbling as you’re rooting for Moonlight (Best Motion Picture – Drama), Ruth Negga (Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama: Loving), Denzel Washington (Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama: Fences), Naomie Harris (Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture: Moonlight), Octavia Spencer (Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture: Hidden Figures), Viola Davis (Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture: Fences), Mahershala Ali (Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture: Moonlight), Atlanta (Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy), Courtney B. Vance (Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television: The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story), Kerry Washington (Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television: Confirmation), and more.

Culpo was inspired by the classic champagne cocktail, which traditionally contains ingredients like champagne, bitters, sugar cube, and sometimes cognac, when creating The Moët Diamond. However, she put a twist on the ingredients in order to pay homage to the elegance and style of the Golden Globes. “Culpo selected cherry bitters, to give a hint of fruit; rock candy sticks as a garnish, to add a touch of sweetness; and orange liqueur to balance the sweetness and round out the elegant flavor profile,” according to a press release.

Mini Fried Chicken Biscuit Sliders
Ingredients: Biscuits

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 6 tbsp salted butter, salted margarine OR buttery flavored shortening, frozen (use margarine or shortening for kosher)
  • 1 cup milk OR unsweetened non-dairy milk (use non-dairy milk for kosher – almond, cashew and soy milk work well)
  • 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp additional salted butter OR margarine (use margarine for kosher)

Preparation: Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar and salt in a large bowl. Chill dry ingredients in the refrigerator for 20 minutes before proceeding and freeze butter. Add frozen butter, margarine or shortening to the bowl cut into small pieces. Use a pastry cutter or fork to combine the dry ingredients with the fat until only small pieces remain and it looks like sand. In a separate bowl whisk together milk with lemon juice. Make a well in the dry ingredients. Stir gently while pouring in the milk mixture 1/3 cup at a time. You may not need all of the liquid. Stir until just slightly combined, the mixture will be sticky.

Turn onto a lightly floured surface, dust the top with a bit of flour and then fold the dough over on itself 4-5 times. Take care not to knead the dough. Form into a 1-inch thick disc, handling as little as possible. Use a 2-inch biscuit or cookie cutter and push straight down through the dough, then slightly twist to cut out as many biscuits as possible.

Place biscuits on a greased baking sheet in two rows, making sure they just touch along the edges. This will help them rise uniformly. Gently reform the remaining dough and cut out one or two more biscuits. You should end up with 8 biscuits total. Gently press a small divot in the center of each biscuit with your thumb. Brush biscuits with the 2 T. melted butter or margarine. Bake for 20 minutes or until fluffy and golden, rotating the pan halfway through baking.

Ingredients: Fried Chicken

  • 1 lb. boneless skinless chicken thighs (4 thighs)
  • 1 cup self rising flour
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup hot sauce
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 3 pints peanut oil
  • Pickle slices and honey, for topping

Preparation: In a medium bowl, beat the eggs, water, and hot sauce together. Reserve. In another medium bowl, combine the self-rising flour and black pepper. Trim excess fat from thighs and split in half. Sprinkle chicken pieces generously with salt, then lightly sprinkle with garlic powder.

Dip seasoned chicken in hot sauce mixture, then coat with seasoned flour. Pour oil in a large sauce pot and heat to 350 using a candy thermometer. Carefully submerge the chicken pieces into the hot oil. Fry the chicken until crispy (4-5 minutes), it should begin to float in the oil.

Serve hot fried chicken thighs on fresh split biscuits. Top with pickle slices and drizzle with honey.

New 1960s-Inspired ‘Hidden Figures’ Character Posters

In celebration of the wide release of Hidden Figures this Friday, Jan. 5th, 20th Century Fox has released new character posters.

The 1960s-inspired posters feature Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe as Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson. These brilliant Black women made history (even if they were forgotten until recently) as the brains behind one of NASA’s greatest missions: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit.

Along with being inspired by the ’60s, the character posters are also reminiscent of campaign posters from the decade. They even feature slogans.
