We have a month to get in shape before the official start of summer, but working out can be so boooooring. Well, that’s if you haven’t stepped into a Brukwine fitness class. Founders Tavia Bailey (right) and Tamara Marrow (left) have created this Caribbean-inspired dance workout that allows women to shed their inhibitions, let their sexy flow, and tone their entire body, all to the rhythmic beats of the hottest dancehall music. (Some classes even feature a live DJ.)
Both Bailey and Marrow began dancing at an early age, but took different paths towards their passion. Bailey pursued a professional career for a time, but she studied several styles of dance after moving to New York and began going on auditions. She has danced for powerhouses Beyoncé, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Eve, Missy Elliot, and many others. Bailey has appeared in music videos and national commercials, and has toured with some of the best in the music business. Marrow knew she wanted to be a dancer at the age of 4 when her mom enrolled her in classes. She began her career as a Knicks City Dancer and choreographer, and has performed in front of thousands of New York Knicks fans at Madison Square Garden. She then went on to appear in music videos and feature films, and went on tour with some of the hottest entertainers. She also has danced for Missy Elliott, and has gotten down with Sean “Diddy” Combs, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Tweet, Ludacris, Pharrell, and Gwen Stefani to name a few.
Now the ladies of Brukwine are focused on helping women gain confidence to take on their day and their health one wind and hip isolation at a time.
UPTOWN: Why “brukwine” and not “twerk”? What’s the difference for people who don’t know?
Tavia & Tamara: Brukwine is a Jamaican term that means to break out and wine (your waist that is). Winding is not a fad; it’s been around for centuries, and we like to think that what we do is sexier and more refined.
U: How many calories do you think are burned during a Brukwine class?
Tavia & Tamara: We have a lot of people who wear calorie counters in class, and we’ve had people who burn anywhere from 700 to 1,200 calories in one class. It’s a fun and intense workout; you definitely get out of it what you put into it.
U: During the class, I noticed a camaraderie and lack of competition and cattiness amongst the women. How do you foster that environment?
Tavia & Tamara: It’s a positive, uplifting vibe and it happens naturally. Everyone comes to Brukwine to have fun and work out. No one really has the time for cattiness; it’s not that type of vibe in our class. We are really fun and approachable, and we have the best time in our classes. Lots of women who come to a Brukwine class have made long-lasting friendships with one another. It’s just women coming together with a common goal -– to #sweatsexy!
U: Why are the classes so popular? There were more than 40 women in the class I attended.
Tavia & Tamara: Our classes are so much fun, but they are also effective. You are sweating and burning tons of calories, but we have such a good time it doesn’t feel like an average workout.
U: What is the main reason, in your opinion, many women hate to work out and how are your classes changing their attitude about fitness?
Tavia & Tamara: Working out in the traditional sense is just not for everyone. We have a lot of women who have never worked out before in their lives. So for them to choose Brukwine to be the one and only thing to get them up and moving is testament to us that we have something different and exciting. It never gets boring; we are always coming up with new moves and dancing to new music.
U: What’s next for you ladies?
Tavia & Tamara: We want Brukwine to be everywhere. We want people to have access to our workouts all over the world so we are definitely working on expanding.
We have several hours until the weekend, so why not start a dance party in your office (with the door shut, of course) as a distraction? Especially since Idris Elba is here to help. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis tapped the actor to appear in the music video for their “Dance Off” single. The Luther star not only busts a move towards the end of the video, he also provides the hook, saying, “I challenge you to a dance off. Hands off, no trash talk, no back walk,” reminiscent of Vincent Price‘s spoken word performance on Michael Jackson‘s “Thriller.” Here’s three minutes and 31 seconds of distraction …
Mark your calendars for June 21st and 22nd because you’ll want to park yourself in front of a TV for the two-night premiere of OWN‘s family megachurch drama, GREENLEAF.
The Craig Wright-series stars Keith David as Bishop James Greenleaf, the head of a megachurch in Memphis; and Lynn Whitfield takes on the role of Lady Mae Greenleaf, the family matriarch and first lady of the church. Merle Dandridge stars as their “prodigal daughter” Grace, who is determined to investigate and reveal the dark secrets and lies of the Greenleaf family. Oprah Winfrey, Lamman Rucker, Kim Hawthorne, and Deborah Joy Winans round out the rest of the Greenleaf family.
Having watched the premiere episode, this writer knows you won’t want to miss GREENLEAF even if you tend to sleep-in Sunday mornings or have beliefs that don’t align with Christianity. It’s just that good …
“Are you serious?! Where do you buy that shirt? How do you sell a picture of Snoop Dogg on a T-shirt for $924?
“I wouldn’t even pay 900-something dollars for a Snoop Dogg shirt and I know the muthaf***a. Hell nah, hell nah! Nah, but that’s a good thing man, continued success to whoever sellin’ it man, hopefully one day soon y’all give me something. Break bread or fake dead, y’all know what it is!”
— Snoop Dogg reacts to a $924 Vetements T-shirt with his face on it, in an interview with Hypebeast. He didn’t know anything about the “hijack fashion” shirt that looks like a replica of the ones sold during his 1993 “Beware of Dogg” tour. Snoop also discussed this Adidas collaboration, and revealed that his is “fully on the creative side.” He added:
“They don’t bring me ideas and say, ‘How do you like this Snoop?’ We sit down and we collaborate. They basically go into the vault of who I am and what my style is based on and they present ideas and I present ideas and we make it work. We make it match.”
Singer Songwriter Avehre caught the attention of living legend Gladys Knight who coined him her protégé. You will see why when you get to know and hear rising star Avehre.
With the rise of social media it may have seemed like the days of turning in an audition tape were over. But Avehre, a singer songwriter with both singing chops and bravado did just that, managing to get an audition tape to living legend and the Empress of Soul herself Gladys Knight.
Recognizing his talent immediately, the legendary singer invited him to become a background singer and featured artist on her worldwide tour. Embarking on a worldwide tour with Gladys was enough for her to realize that Avehre was special. Avehre co-wrote the track “Just A Little” that Gladys Knight performed on “Black Girls Rock” where she was honored for her lifetime achievements in music.
Gladys has mentored him and coined him her protégé and is excited for the world to hear and see Avehre as a standalone artist. It hasn’t taken long for that to happen. Avehre has not only caught the ear of Gladys Knight his musical sensibilities have garnered attention from the likes of Brandy and Kelly Rowland to name a few.
Once you get to know Avehre’s music you will see why so many of music’s best love this rising star. His new single titled, “Say It Ain’t So” is a soulful sensory experience that will give you a sense of what to expect from his upcoming EP release.
Celebrities like Ciara, Ludacris, and Keke Palmer brought it on the 2016 Billboard Music Awards red carpet, which was the hottest ticket in Las Vegas last night. Others, like Priyanka Chopra and Serayah, fell flat (not literally, fortunately). Let’s take a look …
Kelly Rowland wore a silver embellished illusion Labourjoisie gown.
Zendaya wore a custom Calvin Klein ensemble, and finished the look with hair by Kim Kimble.
Co-host Ciara poured on a Philipp Plein gown that resembled liquid metal, to walk the red carpet.
Ludacris, who co-hosted with Ciara, wore a Giorgio Armani suit for the red carpet.
Laverne Cox donned awards show-staple Michael Costello.
Serayah wore two Baja East bandeau and boxing pants looks for the Billboard Awards.
Keke Palmer proved she’s a grown-ass woman in a latex House of Harlot dress.
Ariana Grande brought a youthful vibe to a bondage-inspired Atelier Versace gown.
Priyanka Chopra also tapped Atelier Versace for her Billboard Awards look.
Singing group Fifth Harmony proved there’s still a place in fashion for the LBD.
“I love u all but I have been stabbed in the back by someone I stupidly trusted ( not my man or my sisters) I am not about to be tried and tested to snitch and it’s not in good taste to tell you who…… but as #tamartians you are very smart and can figure things out on your own. But know that every one who smiles in your face is NOT your friend and is NOT cheering for you and will LIE and try and tear u down to TRY and dim your light. Thank GOD HE HOLDS MY FUTURE AND MY HAND! (Remember who u are)….I am Tamar Braxton. And if you thought for 1 sec u played me…..In the late great prince and the amazing Beyoncé voice you PLAYED yourself to God be the Glory and I will be taking a short break from ALL social media…until then❤️ yourself and WATCH YOUR BACK ( I put this picture up cause this is the embrace I got from my sister and best friend that she ALWAYS gives when she knows I’ve been had)“
— Tamar Braxton confirms the news that she has left The Real, the daytime talk show she co-hosted with Tamera Mowry-Housley, Adrienne Bailon, Loni Love, and Jeannie Mai, in a Facebook post. Reports initially claimed Braxton was fired because she didn’t read too well with the audience or advertisers, and she was difficult to deal with. After posting the above message on Facebook and Instagram, Braxton and The Real released a joint statement:
“THE REAL and Tamar Braxton have mutually decided that Tamar will not be continuing with the show for its upcoming third season. She will be leaving in order to concentrate on her solo career. Everyone associated with THE REAL appreciates Tamar’s efforts and the contributions she has made to the show’s success, and we wish her all the best for the future.”
It’s unclear who betrayed Braxton, but she has since unfollowed The Real and all her former co-hosts, with the exception of Mowry-Housley.
Celebrating the 46th birthday isn’t usually an epic affair for most people, but for Naomi Campbell every birthday is a time of revelry. The surprise birthday dinner her friends organized Sunday was definitely a night of elegance.
The dinner was held at PHD Rooftop Lounge, a nightspot in the Dream Downtown Hotel in New York featuring skyline views, chandeliers, and a terrace.
The flowers, the “Red Naomi” roses to be specific, nearly stole the show. Campbell’s pals dropped a remarkable $15,000 on the flowers. The arrangements included 1,000 roses imported from Holland actually bearing the name of the supermodel.
Angelica Flowers and Events handled the blooms, and the “Red Naomi” roses are reportedly known for their long stems, “smooth, velvety shade and the best petal count,” reports TMZ.
The birthday cake resembled Campbell’s coffee table book.
The dinner was attended by 90 guests, including Sean “Diddy” Combs, Q-Tip, Jussie Smollett, Usher, model Maria Borges, French Montana, and Fabolous.
Keep clicking for more images from Naomi Campbell’s 46th birthday fête.
Diddy took to Instagram to wish Campbell a happy birthday.
Smollett shared well-wishes with the birthday girl also.
Usher gave us a glimpse into the party.
Fabolous also enjoyed Campbell’s birthday celebration.
And Campbell thanked her friends for a lovely surprise birthday party and dinner.
“Being on television sets from age 3 to age 30, I’m more comfortable there. You create a family with these people that’s sometimes are closer to you than your own family. It’s not very healthy later in life … My likeness — however you see it at that time — had 15 people dictating what I should and should not look like. If I did whatever I want, it’s not gonna sell. It doesn’t go with the brand. I was branded at such a young age.
“I kinda pushed myself to look for boys. I look back now like, ‘Woah, you like girls.’ I didn’t want to tell my parents. I had the number one show on Disney. I had multiple albums, I’d been on tour with NSYNC. I didn’t wanna deal with that.
“I never thought I would come out because my personal life didn’t matter. It was only what was supposed to be sold as the Raven-Symone brand.”
— Raven-Symone opened up about her sexuality and what initially prevented her from coming out, in an “It Got Better” video testimonial from the It Gets Better project. The View co-host and former child star also explained that concealing her sexuality ate at her soul, but she experienced relief when she left Hollywood to attend college.
“I didn’t have to have a ‘beard.’ I didn’t have to have a man standing by me. I felt lighter, I felt like I could go out and not have to put on 17 different hats to be myself.”
The opulent afternoon will include: A photographer, delectable hors d’oeuvres, mini-massages provided by Exhale Spa, test drives of the latest Mercedes-Benz models, and fabulous giveaways. Most importantly, Maisha S. Wynn, Lifestyle Specialist, will be signing autographs of her powerful book, The Wynning Way, and sharing wynning tips from her book. For more information about Wynn, visit LiveToWynn.com.
Paris Jackson, 18, recently honored her father, the late Michael Jackson, by getting a tattoo of his Dangerous album cover art. The eldest of Michael’s three children showed off her ink on Instagram one day ago. The photo caption reads:
“‘The meaning of life is contained in every single expression of life. It is present in the infinity of forms and phenomena that exist in all of creation.’ Never forget your roots, and always be proud of where you came from.”
The tattoo artist eerily captured Michael’s eyes and the intensity behind them.
This isn’t Paris’s first body modification. She has a tongue piercing and a few ear piercings. Since she turned 18 on April 3, 2016, Paris no longer needs a guardian’s permission to get tattoos or piercings.
President Barack Obama, who is on a historic tour of Asia, let a Vietnamese woman show off her rapping talent during a town hall meeting in Ho Chi Minh today.
When 26-year-old Hàng Lâm Trang Anh, who goes by the name Suboi, told Obama she is a rapper, he asked her to spit some bars.
“Do you need a little beat?” Obama asked her before delivering a truly pitiful beatbox. “Go ahead, c’mon.”
“Vietnamese or English?” Suboi asked.
“In Vietnamese, of course, but I won’t know what it means,” the president responded.
Even though Obama can’t really beatbox, the message of Suboi’s verse was on point.
Check it out …
Obama also took a serious tone during the town hall meeting, advising the young people in attendance to “Decide what it is that you care about deeply, and then put everything you have into doing that.”
“You know you made it when the fact … your marriage made it is worth millions … Lemonade is a popular drink and it still is … Survival of the littest.”
— Jay Z raps on the remix of Fat Joe and Remy Ma‘s “All the Way Up.” Clearly, Jay was in on Beyoncé‘s allusions to his alleged cheating on Lemonade. Why would a notoriously private woman and couple allude to there being trouble in paradise? Mo’ money, mo’ money, mo’ money! The “All the Way Up” remix was released on Tidal, of course. And everyone has been wracking their brains trying to figure out who “Becky with the good hair is.” Here’s a hint: She is no one. Bey and Jay have duped you once again …
[May 18, 2016 – New York City, NY] Today, well-known entertainment executive, Shanti Das launched her Silence the Shame initiative. Silence the Shame wants to stop the stigmatization that comes with mental health issues by encouraging people to seek treatment and support.
This initiative is important to the music industry veteran, Das, because she has personally suffered with depression over the years and dealt with her father’s suicide. Shanti hopes to spark a national conversation that will lead to increased awareness and funding to support those living with mental health conditions. Shanti is enlisting the help of some of her celebrity friends and colleagues to jump-start the conversation. One of the initiative’s first ambassadors is media mogul, Nick Cannon with many more to follow.
Shanti Das has an extensive 25-year music industry career. Starting as an intern and working her way to Executive Vice President, Das’ has held positions at Capital Records, Sony Music, LaFace Records, Columbia Records, and Universal Motown, where she worked directly with some of music’s top talent such as: Outkast, Usher, Prince, TLC, Toni Braxton, Erykah Badu, and more. Currently, Shanti is the Founder/CEO of Press Reset Entertainment, an Atlanta-based entertainment firm that provides independent marketing and strategy for musicians, talent booking, celebrity procurement, brand marketing, and event assistance. The self-proclaimed, Hip-Hop Professional® is not new to philanthropic initiatives and events, Das has been apart of innovating the No Reservations Needed (food drive for the homeless), Samples That Serve (collection of toiletries), Backpack Blessings (collection of back to school supplies), Day of Pampering (beauty pampering for moms), Toys of Joy (hospital toy drive), and Turn The Page (book drive and reading program). Silence the Shame may be Das’ most personal venture yet.
Silence The Shame could not have come at a better time being that May is Mental Health Awareness Month. While mental health awareness is a national concern, Das and Cannon’s participation in the initiative is critical to bringing attention to this topic within the entertainment industry. Often the worlds of music, movies, television, and fashion have suffered from the lost and destruction of the most talented individuals. Today, entertainers often fear discussing their struggles with mental wellness because of the foreseen cyber bullying, damaging celebrity gossip, and the loss of work. Silence the Shame aims to liberate anyone who feels suppressed discussing their mental wellness. Shanti Das will be doing a speaking tour this summer and fall discussing Silence the Shame and will enlist the help of doctors, mental health professionals, people living with mental health issues, and the parents of children affected. You can learn more about Silence The Shame below.

It hasn’t been a year since Glory Johnson, 25, and ex-wife Brittney Griner, 25, split up, but Johnson has a new love on her arm — a man this time.
Johnson reportedly has been dating Christopher Fry, 30, who lives in Seymour, TN which is a short distance to her family’s home in Knoxville. He’s also been spending time with her in Dallas, where she’s playing basketball.
In October, Johnson gave birth 15 weeks early to twin girls Ava Simone and Solei Diem. They were conceived with her eggs and donor sperm while she was married to Griner. In fact, the WNBA couple broke up one day after Johnson announced she was pregnant with twins.
They later battled over child support in court, but agreed to split childcare costs in April 2016. Since Griner makes significantly more than Johnson — $1.16 million compared to approximately $125,000 — she is responsible for 90 percent of twins’ care. A judge ruled that Griner would pay $2,835 per month in child support, partly because the twins require constant care following their premature birth.
Despite confirmation from Fry’s family, Johnson’s agent, DJ Fisher, said there’s no romance between Fry and his client. The above Valentine’s Day image says otherwise, however.

Cynthia Bailey has confirmed that she and husband Peter Thomas have separated.
Season eight of The Real Housewives of Atlanta was a tense one for Bailey and Thomas, whose relationship and marriage has been under the reality TV lens since they joined the series in season three. Miscommunication and rumors that Thomas is a cheater have plagued the couple. During 2015, a video showing Thomas engaging in an intimate conversation with another woman surfaced.
“Peter and I are separated. He lives in Charlotte, and I live in Atlanta,” Bailey revealed to The Daily Dish.
She also seems cautiously optimistic this might not be the end for them. “I am definitely taking some time to myself to figure out how I want to move forward. I don’t want to rush into anything, so I think this time apart is good for us,” Bailey added. “And I think the space apart, I think he can appreciate it as well. I think it gives people time to think and process and just move forward in a way that really is healthy for everyone involved.”
During season eight, Bailey and Thomas seemed to mend their relationship after the video came to light, but by the time the reunion aired, it was clear they were still swimming through troubled waters. Host Andy Cohen even commented that they seemed separated already, after learning that Thomas was spending most of his time in Charlotte while Bailey was in Atlanta.
So is this the definitive end for Bailey and Thomas?
“Regardless of where I am with Peter, he is my husband. I will always love him, and I will always support him. And I believe he feels the same about me,” Bailey recently told The Daily Dish. “Whether or not we decide to stay married or not, that’s something that we have to decide soon. But right now, I’m enjoying the time apart, taking time for myself.”
